In today's episode, I addressed a common question about managing menopause symptoms, particularly sleep issues, without using hormones. This is especially relevant for women with a history of breast cancer where hormone treatments are not advisable. Key Points Discussed: Lifestyle and Behavioral Strategies Sleep Hygiene: Maintain a consistent sleep schedule to align with your circadian rhythm. Develop a relaxing bedtime routine to increase melatonin production and reduce cortisol levels. Optimize your sleep environment to be cool, dark, and quiet. Diet and Hydration: Follow a whole food plant-based diet to reduce inflammation and improve overall health. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake as they can disrupt sleep. Stay hydrated but reduce fluid intake before bed to avoid nighttime awakenings. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can improve mood and regulate circadian rhythms. Avoid intense exercise close to bedtime; opt for relaxing activities like evening walks. Non-Hormonal Treatments Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I): Helps change negative thoughts and behaviors related to sleep. Promotes good sleep hygiene and relaxation techniques. Medications: Melatonin: Useful in small doses to help fall asleep. Gabapentin: Reduces nerve pain and hot flashes. Trazodone: Increases serotonin to help regulate mood and sleep. Other Medications: Clonidine and SSRIs for short-term use to manage hot flashes and sleep issues. Herbal and Dietary Supplements Phytoestrogens: Found in soy products, flaxseed, and red clover, these can provide mild estrogenic effects without the risks of hormone therapy. Black Cohosh, Valerian Root, and Magnesium: These supplements can help alleviate menopausal symptoms and improve sleep quality. Stress Management Emphasized the importance of mindfulness and meditation to manage stress, which can significantly impact sleep quality. I hope you found these insights helpful. On this week's episode of the Balancing Chaos Podcast, Kelley sits down with the sleep coach she has used with both of her own kids, who has truly changed her life for the better, Chrissy Lawler. Chrissy is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, lover of sleep, and baby sleep consultant. Like Kelley, she lives in Las Vegas with her husband and four daughters, who are, thanks to her, amazing sleepers. She will tell you they weren't born that way but with what Chrissy teaches, your babies can be amazing sleepers, too!Chrissy founded The Peaceful Sleeper for two main reasons: she recognized how critically important sleep is in all aspects of life (mentally, physically and emotionally), and she believes that many parents are under-informed or feel unnecessary guilt when it comes to sleep learning and sleep coaching their babies. Chrissy has been practicing therapy for 13 years now, and she slowly started to realize that sleep issues were a common thread among all of her clients. So she got some additional training in advanced sleep medicine  and learned that many of the mental health challenges we (and our children) face today stem from inadequate sleep.Together, Kelley and Chrissy discuss sleep patterns for adults and children, emphasizing the importance of age-appropriate sleep durations for optimal health physically and mentally. Throughout the episode Chrissy shares valuable insights on myths about sleep learning, how to initiate an independent sleep process with your child no matter what their age, how to address sleep regressions, what to do about adult insomnia and how to truly disconnect from our screens for better quality sleep. So listen in and learn about how to get yourself and your kids to bed and why its so important for all of us! To connect with Kelley click HERETo book a lab review click HERETo connect with Chrissy click HERE

As we embarked on our parenting journey in 2015, we knew our lives would be forever changed. Throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I often heard comments regarding sleep and how we would apparently never get to experience it again once the baby arrived. “Sleep now because you'll never sleep again” was a crowd favorite. Being an elementary school teacher, I know that children thrive on routine and structure. There had to be a way to provide my child with the sleep he needed; so my research began. My sister had previously worked with The Cradle Coach, a sleep consultancy firm based out of South Florida. They helped guide her daughter towards a healthy sleep foundation and I witnessed it happening. I saw how structured her days were and how much sleep she was getting at night. I saw how energized and peaceful she was while awake. I saw the amazing benefits it brought to her entire family! The day I put my 9-week-old on a regular sleep schedule was when our lives truly changed for the better. Our days now had consistency. He was following predictable nap and feeding schedules. Everything fell into place. By 3 months old, he was sleeping through the night (12 hours straight) and happier than ever during the day! Fast forward 2 years to our daughter being born; I was able to implement a healthy sleep foundation from the beginning and her schedule has always been amazing. I understand the struggle of being a tired mom and constantly trying to guess what your child needs or wants. As a new mother, you feel like the world is watching and pressuring you to do everything perfectly; that in itself can be exhausting. By implementing a consistent daily schedule and routine, I have created a positive sleep foundation for our family. Our lives are significantly easier and more stable. Becoming a sleep consultant was one of the best decisions I have made. I love helping frustrated parents succeed while overcoming sleep deprivation and helping their children! IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™… former rocket scientist and former law professor Ozan Varol—an expert in creativity, innovation, and critical thinking—says that unlocking your full potential involves reimagining the status quo rather than simply resisting it. “The word resist for me gets in the way because often resistance becomes a different way of conformity, as in you're resisting something but you're not really offering a new path forward,” he says. “So, resistance becomes its own end in and of itself. The goal should be re-imagination.”In this discussion about Ozan's newest book, “AWAKEN YOUR GENIUS: Escape Conformity, Ignite Creativity, and Become Extraordinary,” you'll learn to access the best parts of your brain and create your own path as a leader and creator by acting instead of reacting. While people consider those who blaze their own trail as geniuses, Ozan contends that genius is not limited to a select few. Rather, it can be discovered by anyone. He loaded this book with smart tips, examples, things to think about, and things to do. For example, you'll learn why you should ignore email until noon and spend the most valuable time of your day thinking in creativity. You'll also learn how spending more time on the “why” than the “what” moves you toward the life you really want to be living. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™... a look into the story of the human mind wonders if you're just a machine made of meat. Guest Paul Bloom, a researcher, teacher and author, studies adult and child development in terms of how people make sense of the world. It turns out that there are all kinds of automated systems in your body that are making sense of the world for you and after they do that, they give you a picture of the world. The interesting part is that picture may be more or less accurate based on a lot of things that are part of your programming.Paul is a professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and professor emeritus of Psychology at Yale University. He teaches a popular “Intro to Psychology” class that he turned into his seventh book, called: “Psych: The Story of the Human Mind.”Because he studies psychology at so many different levels, he brings new knowledge and new synthesis of ideas to the discussion of the human mind. Topics range from consciousness to ChatGPT and BDSM, from whether you have a soul or if you can attain happiness. Paul's writing and lectures show how psychology can give us practical insights into important issues.
