We are told not to quench or grieve the Spirit and are warned about those who resisted the Spirit, these are the ones who killed the prophets. Church history is full of people proudly clinging to doctrines that ensure the Holy Spirit is quenched, grieved, and resisted. But our lives are to look like the book of Acts. On the pages of the book of Acts, we read the prescription for the normal Christian life: The Holy Spirit moving upon people to revive and empower them for ministry. The gospel is a gospel of power. It needs to be shared in Holy Spirit power, not with our human efforts. We need the full power of the Holy Spirit working in and through our lives.

What should you do when life's battles get intense. Instead of calming down, the battle seems to get even more fierce. Instead of coming to an end, the battle seems to be extending with no end in sight. In this sermon we consider the spiritual dimension of the battles we face. We consider the insights and instructions presented in Ephesians 6:10-18. a) We are in spiritual conflict – we know we are in spiritual conflict. b) The enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy – we know what the enemy seeks to achieve. c) The schemes, the evil day and all the fiery darts – we know that the devil comes with his schemes and fiery darts and there will be the evil days when things get intense. When the battle gets intense: a) Be strong in the lord – we strengthen ourselves in god and rely on his hell defeating, death destroying, all surpassing resurrection power working through us. b) Use your full armor – we use all the weapons that god has given to us. c) Keep standing – we keep standing and refuse to quit. d) Wrestle – we engage with the enemy knowing that god will bring us out victorious. e) Quench fiery darts – we stand unshaken in our faith, and this negates all of satan's fiery darts. f) Attack – we get on the offensive and inflict damage on the enemy when he comes against us. PRESUMING ON CHRIST'S MERCY And the best of us all might offend Christ's merciful disposition if we do not carefully watch that liberty which our fleshly nature is ready to make use of. Thus we reason, "If Christ will not quench the smoking flax, why should we fear that any neglect on our part will bring us into a comfortless condition? If Christ will not do it, what can?" You know the apostle's prohibition, "Do not quench the Spirit" (1 Thess. 5:19). Such cautions of not quenching are used by the Spirit as a means of not quenching him.

It is not wrong to conceal their defects, to excuse some failings, to commend their performances, to encourage their progress, to remove all difficulties out of their way, to help them in every way to bear the yoke of religion with greater ease, to bring them to love God and his service, lest they acquire a distaste for it before they know it.

Where are you going to satisfy your soul thirst?My prayer for this Christmas is that we will discover that Jesus can and only Jesus can quench our soul-thirst!

I discovered that Jesus could offer me something that nothing or no one else could offer.  He could quench my spiritual thirst.  He offered me a relationship.  He offered me purpose for my life.  As I began to sincerely follow him, my life was filled with contentment.  I realized that Jesus could satisfy the thirst and the longing that I had inside.Main Points:1. You and I have experienced physical thirst. But we have another kind of thirst. It's spiritual thirst, and yes everyone experiences it, sometimes without realizing it. Inside all of us there is a thirst that nothing in this world can satisfy.  There is a thirst within us that only God can fill.  2. All of us have tried to satisfy our thirst. If a person is thirsty, they are going to search for water.  It's the same way with our spiritual thirst.  We are all looking for a way to quench our thirst.  We search for meaning and purpose through a person, through possessions, or by pursuing pleasure…only to find that our souls are still parched. 3. We experience this living water when we put our faith in Jesus as our Savior and Lord. It's only then that we can experience the satisfaction of our thirst being quenched.Today's Scripture Verses:John 6:35 - Jesus says, “He who believes in me will never thirst.” John 7:37-38 - : “‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. God's spirit—His power and influence—is a power we can't even begin to comprehend. His spirit was introduced to us as the mighty power of His will in Genesis 1:1-3 as His creative process began with “Let there be light." This same power and influence is described as taking root in us in Ephesians 1:13 where it says we were sealed with God's spirit through the salvation of Jesus. With all of the marvel of this mighty power of God working in us, how is it that we can "quench" it? Why would we ever even think of doing such a thing and most importantly, what do the Scriptures tell us about handling this awesome privilege with reverence and humility? The biblical warning from 1 Thessalonians 5:19 to “not quench the spirit” has important meaning in regard to Christian conduct in our day. Quenching the powerful and transformative force of God's spirit means stifling or extinguishing that divine influence through neglect, disobedience or self-deception. Critical elements for avoiding this spiritually destructive behavior were laid out by the Apostle Paul in his previous teachings about rejoicing, prayer and gratitude, as these behaviors “fuel” the spirit. Conversely, bitterness, distraction and indifference can suppress it. The Bible provides vivid metaphors—like hiding a lamp under a basket or forgetting one's reflection in a mirror—to illustrate how spiritual neglect can lead to eventual quenching of the spirit. While there is a difference between grieving the spirit (through harmful attitudes or behaviors) and quenching it (cutting off its influence entirely) we as disciples are urged to remain attentive and disciplined, feeding the spirit through active faith and humility.
