Another day in the mid-50's as we get ready for colder temps this weekend. It's Hypothetical Thursday, so we once again asked each other hypothetical questions. Jean's question for Brian was: "Who was the most influential person in your life?". Brian's question for Jean was: "Would you rather fly First-Class every time you fly & stay in a 1-star hotel...or stay in a 5-star hotel whenever you go somewhere & have the middle seat in economy?" Office Cora joined us just after 8am to let us know what she's up to this weekend in the 715. Her hypothetical question for us was: "If you could only have one condiment for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?" We also let you know what's on TV today/tonight, talked about season 2 of KPop Demon Hunters, and Miss Piggy's stand-alone movie. In sports, Week 10 in the NFL kicks off tonight with Thursday Night Football, the Bucks are off until Friday, Giannis got a black eye and it's origins are….interesting, and a look at the Badger men's basketball schedule and the Badger football schedule. Great story about a heroic teen in Florida who recently helped save a bunch of people who were stuck in their vehicles during a flash flood. And an absolutely heart-warming story about a 93 year-old man who used his smelly socks to help track down & find his lost dog. In case you missed it, Kraft recently released a new flavor of it's Mac-n-Cheese, and people have strong reactions to it. Elsewhere in sports, Alexander Ovechkin scored his 900th career goal, Kyler Murray is going on the IL, and CJ Strout is going to sit this weekend for the Texans. October just recently wrapped up, and many of you probably went to a wedding. October is the most popular month for nuptials, and we looked a list of ways you might have been rude at a wedding. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a guy who REALLY needed to use a bathroom stall at a grocery store, a hospital in Maine is apologizing for sending letters to a bunch of LIVING patients…telling them that they are actually DEAD, a council meeting in Scotland that had to edit the recording of a recent meeting after someone went to the bathroom without turning off their camera, the benefits of having sex in the morning, and a drunk substitute teacher in WI.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hop in the comments and tell us what you notice: C-SPAN on Instagram: "Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Tuesday gathered the nation's top military leaders to give a speech on restoring a “warrior ethos” in the armed forces, calling it a “moment of urgency.” “The military has been forced by foolish and reckless politicians to focus on the wrong things,” he said at a Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. “In many ways, this speech is about fixing decades of decay, some of it obvious, some of it hidden.” The Pentagon leader declared that the only mission of the “newly restored Department of War” will be “warfighting.” “Preparing for war and preparing to win. Unrelenting and uncompromising in that pursuit. Not because we want war. No one here wants war. But it's because we love peace,” he said. The secretary called for high fitness standards, merit-based promotions and a focus on lethality, casting aside what he considers “woke” initiatives. “No more identity months, DEI offices, dudes in dresses. No more climate change worship. No more division, distraction or gender delusions. No more debris,” he said. “As I've said before and will say again, we are done with that shit.” He said every member of the military, from the bottom to the top, must adhere to strict fitness and grooming standards — and that every combat job must return to the “highest male standard.” “It's completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon leading commands around the country, in the world. It's a bad look,” he said. Watch more by tapping the link in our bio. #petehegseth #usmilitary #cspan"

Tucked away in the historic apple-growing region of Oak Glen, California, lies Riley's Farm – a 760-acre colonial living history experience that's become a beloved family tradition for thousands of Southern California families. Join Coach Mikki and farm owner Jim Riley as they explore how this remarkable destination evolved from a family vacation property into an immersive historical experience hosting 80,000 schoolchildren annually.Riley shares the serendipitous journey that led to creating a place where history comes alive through Revolutionary War reenactments, colonial dinners, and seasonal harvests. What make extraordinary isn't just its apple orchards or homemade pies – it's the opportunity for families to actively participate in American heritage rather than passively consume entertainment. From pressing apple cider in traditional presses to dancing in converted barns after farm-to-table meals, visitors create memories that digital experiences simply can't replicate. The conversation reveals something deeper happening at Riley's Farm – what Jim describes as a "mystical connection" many feel to agricultural rhythms. "Most of us are only three or four generations removed from the soil," he explains, suggesting that farm experiences tap into cultural memories embedded in our collective consciousness. As families disconnect from technology and reconnect with tactile experiences, they often discover joy in simple pleasures and gain appreciation for the sacrifices made by earlier Americans who built our nation through tremendous hardship and heroism.Whether you're looking for a unique family outing, seeking to understand American history beyond textbooks, or simply craving the taste of freshly pressed cider and homemade caramel apple pie, Riley's Farm offers an authentic escape from modern life. As Coach Mikki attests from years of visits, "It leaves a memory that you'll cherish." This week, hosts Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter venture down a sweeter path on The Bourbon Road podcast for a truly decadent and educational experience. They are joined by a very special guest, Nicole Patel, the founder and master chocolatier of the Austin-based Delysia Chocolatier. In a fascinating twist, Nicole reveals that her journey to becoming a chocolatier began after earning a master's degree in engineering. She discusses how her engineering mindset and a challenge to conquer the particular science of chocolate making—from tempering to managing temperature and humidity—led her to create her business. Throughout the episode, Nicole guides Jim and Todd through a blind tasting, pairing a variety of spirits with selections from her "History of Chocolate" tasting set without any advance knowledge of the whiskeys. She provides expert instruction on the proper way to experience the pairings: first tasting the bourbon, then letting a piece of chocolate melt on the tongue to appreciate its individual flavors, and finally, combining the two to see how they interact and transform one another. The result is an exploration of complementary and contrasting flavors that will inspire listeners to host their own tasting parties. The pairings on this episode include: Round 1: Jim's Blanton's Single Barrel, with its traditional caramel and baking spice notes, is paired with Delysia's Spiced Ganache truffle. Todd's seven-year Old Fitzgerald wheated bourbon, featuring cherry and honey notes, is matched with a Chipotle Orange truffle made with unique ruby chocolate. Round 2: Jim brings out a Weller 12 Year, noted for its cherry and oak profile, which he and Todd both pair with the complex Mexican Mole truffle, containing a blend of eight peppers and six spices. Todd also tastes his Old Grand-Dad Bottled-in-Bond, with its characteristic peanut note, against the spicy chocolate. Round 3: The hosts throw some curveballs. Jim pours a Michter's Barrel Strength Bourbon, featuring dark fruit and caramel notes, which Nicole pairs with the Apple Pie truffle. Todd selects a Laird's Apple Brandy, which is also expertly paired with the Apple Pie truffle, with its notes of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and tart green apple. Round 4: For the final tasting, Jim enjoys an Angel's Envy Cask Strength finished in tawny port barrels, bringing savory, dark grape notes. This is paired with the White Peach Balsamic white chocolate truffle. Todd concludes with a peaty Ardbeg Corryvreckan scotch, which Nicole matches with a simple yet elegant Smoked Cacao truffle, made with 85% bittersweet chocolate and salt smoked in a Texas barbecue pit. Join the roadies for an episode that proves there are no wrong answers in pairing, only delicious experiments. An apple pie, plain and simple, with no sugar added – these are a real favourite served with ice cream, cream, and cinnamon. Makes 6 individual pies Ingredients 1 kg apples, granny smith 1 cup water 2 x 400g blocks sweet short pastry Ice cream to serve Cream to serve Cinnamon to serve Method Set the oven at 200 C fan bake with an oven tray already in the oven to heat up. Grease large-sized (Texan) muffin tin. Prepare the apples by peeling, coring, and slicing, and placing with 1 cup of water into a saucepan with the lid on and gently cook for about 15 minutes. They should retain their shape without turning into pulp. Drain in a colander, reserving the juice which can be reduced to a syrup by simmering it for 5-8 minutes. Cool the apples completely before you start filling the pies. Please note apples do not need added sugar, as they are sweet enough. Now roll your pastry out and cut into circles about the size of a small saucer. Gently line the muffin tin holes with pastry. Patch up any tears or holes. Fill to 3/4 with the apples and then cover with another smaller round of pastry and pinch top to bottom to seal. Use a sharp knife to make a small cross on the top (this lets the steam out). Place on hot tray and bake for approx. 25 minutes near the bottom of the oven, as this makes sure the bottoms cooks. The pastry should be a lovely golden colour. Keep checking to making sure the edges of the pies aren't burning.  Cool in tins then gently remove from their tins. Serve with ice cream and clouds of whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon with a small jug of the reserved apple syrup. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The phrase “as American as mom and apple pie” once described something wholesome and unquestioned. It evoked family, community, and tradition. Today, critics recast those same images as coded language for oppression. The cultural consensus of the 1980s and 1990s is no longer neutral. Under the modern lens, it is marked as racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, and even fascist. When normal life is reframed as oppressive, nearly everyone outside a narrow ideology is implicated. There is no neutral ground. This new moral order assumes that redefining words and policing behavior can control hearts and minds. But humans resist control. They push back when cornered, often out of spite. This explains why cultural campaigns produce backlash. Boycotts of brands like Bud Light or Target were not about products. They were expressions of rebellion against being told nostalgia for one's own culture is immoral. Ironically, by declaring traditional symbols dangerous, activists turn them into emblems of resistance. The harder the effort to erase them, the more stubbornly they endure. The Sydney Sweeney controversy makes this clear. American Eagle ran an ad with the slogan “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.” A simple pun was read as promoting eugenics because the actress is blonde and blue-eyed. Some labeled it fascist-coded. Others mocked the outrage. Sales rose. Even harmless ads are now treated as ideological tests. Extreme marketing thrives in this environment. Outrage spreads faster than approval, and controversy drives profit. Every purchase feels like a political vote. The same dynamic plays out in policy. When police are framed as fascists, enforcement is weakened. Sanctuary cities, meant to protect, often signal weakness. Game theory predicts predators will exploit these gaps. Crime rises where enforcement falls. Meanwhile, suburban and rural residents watch calmly from a distance. They are armed, skeptical, and detached, expecting failure. The paradox deepens. Sanctuaries meant to shield undocumented immigrants often concentrate them where they are easiest to target. Federal agencies treat these cities as stocked ponds. Publicly, city leaders condemn enforcement. Privately, they cooperate to maintain order. Businesses notice instability and leave, hollowing out local economies. These policies resemble United Nations mandates: bold in language, weak in power. They depend on the very systems they oppose to keep functioning. They are more about virtue signaling than effective governance. The result is a cycle. Redefining normality breeds resentment. Resentment fuels backlash. Backlash drives polarization. Ideological policies create chaos, forcing quiet compromises that expose their limits. This conflict plays out like an old film gag. The cigar burns, everyone smiles, and the explosion is inevitable. Attempts to control culture through moral pressure do not end as expected. The backlash is already here, seen in quiet decisions, empty storefronts, and eroding trust. The old symbols of America persist—not because they are flawless, but because they are human and resistant to erasure.Mom and apple pie remain. Not as propaganda, but as things people hold onto when everything else is called into question.

There's something about pie that just says home. Not the store-bought kind with the perfect crimped edges and the glossy labels—but the kind your mama or your granny used to make. The kind with a little flour on the countertop, maybe a thumbprint in the crust where someone pressed too hard, and the aroma that floats out of the oven and wraps around your soul like a quilt on a chilly morning. Listen in and find out why the Pie Bird sings, and how baking a pie is like sending a little love note to those we love!Apple Pie with Cheese CrustSend us a textSupport the showThe Farm Wife (website)Let's Visit! 817: A Course in Sustainability Leadership: 4: The Political Opportunities

Leadership and the Environment

Sustainability has become a polarized partisan political issue, despite everyone wanting clean air, land, water, and food. In the US, neither the Democrats nor Republicans have a vision of or plan to sustainability. Both rely on purported solutions that exacerbate and accelerate our current results. Since we reach the general through the specific, I focus on US political opportunities. I believe those outside the US will see clearly how to apply the spirit of this video to their homes. They're like two tired boxers who get stuck toward the end of a fight in an embrace, holding each other up, acting like they're punching but not. On the contrary, they've evolved into a mutually supportive dance, pandering to their bases, pointing at each other, not taking responsibility.Yet there are political paths toward sustainability, which is why I work in sustainability leadership, as opposed to sustainability itself. We need leadership, not performances designed to look like leadership but are the opposite. This video shows conservative, libertarian, and liberal approaches to sustainability from each tradition's principles, including limited government, free market approaches and anti-racist, anti-imperialist, anti-colonial approaches. All are based in the opposite of coercion, convincing, cajoling, or manipulation. They lead to what appears the only solution that works, an APPLE PIE amendment. While it will work, it's as hard for people as dependent on pollution and depletion as we are to envision as the Thirteenth Amendment must have looked to plantation owners. Yet the Thirteenth passed, replacing the most divisive issue in America's history with a source of unity.Passing the APPLE PIE amendment will unify us. Future generations will wonder why we took so long.To follow up:The videos of this courseMy book, Sustainability SimplifiedThe Workshop and community Hosted on Acast. Donald Trump, just sworn in as the 47th president, was reelected to be a wrecking ball, a middle finger, the people's punch to the Beltway's mouth. And while this populist moment feels “unprecedented,” it's not. The rebuke of the ruling class is encoded in our nation's DNA.  We have seen populist leaders like Donald Trump before. He stands on the shoulders of Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot, Alabama governor George Wallace, and Louisiana legend Huey Long. There have been populist senators, governors, newspaper editors, and radio broadcasters. But only rarely has a populist climbed as high as President Trump. In fact, it has happened only once before.  The last populist to win the presidency was born before the American Revolution. He rose from nothing to become a great general. His adoring troops called him Old Hickory, and his enemies derided him as a bigamist and a tyrant in waiting. His name was Andrew Jackson, and he's the guy who's still on the 20 dollar bill.  On today's debut episode of Breaking History, Eli Lake explains how Andrew Jackson's presidency is the best guide to what Trump's second term could look like.  Go to groundnews.com/Honestly to get 40% off the unlimited access Vantage plan and unlock world-wide perspectives on today's biggest news stories.
