On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about knitwear design with my guest Andrea Mowry. Andrea is was lucky enough to learn how to knit as a child from her Grandma Ginny. By her late teens, guided by the wisdom of the great Elizabeth Zimmerman and her many books, she began trying to work out her own patterns. After leaving her life as a pastry chef to start a family with her husband, her hands found the necessary freedom to begin creating with fiber instead of flour. Andrea focuses on designing knits to fit the modern wardrobe – fun to knit and easy to wear, with clear directions for every level of knitter. She believes in enjoying every stitch and wearing at least one hand knit every day! Andrea has a great love for indulging in new techniques and skills and then sharing them with other knitters thru her patterns and workshops. Her goal is to leave knitters feeling empowered and inspired, and wrapped up in their own beautiful knits! If she is not knitting, you can probably find her spinning, sewing, weaving or cooking up something yummy for her family! +++++ Today's episode is sponsored by Schacht Spindle Company. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast we're talking about building a weaving loom and spindle company with my guests Jane Patrick and Barry Schacht of Schacht Spindle Company. Jane Patrick has been in the weaving and the textile arts field for over 40 years. Between 1981 and 1992 she was an editor at Interweave Press where she edited HANDWOVEN magazine, books, and Design Collections. Jane is an ardent enthusiast of both the art and craft of the textile arts, with interests in both contemporary and traditional work. Jane is the Creative Director for Schacht Spindle Company. Her current project is developing a textile school at Schacht in Boulder, Colorado. Barry Schacht, CEO of Schacht Spindle Company, came into the weaving and spinning world by chance, in 1969, when his brother's girlfriend wanted to learn to spin. From a first commission to make a drop spindle, to creating a loom with little knowledge, Barry has been the guiding light of Schacht Spindle Company, now housed in a 33,000 square foot building and employing 50 employees. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Wunderlabel, your one-stop-shop for professional custom clothing labels and personalized branding products. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about building a business in ceramics with my guest Emily Reinhardt. Emily Reinhardt created The Object Enthusiast in 2011 right after graduating from Kansas State University. The greatest gift of all was the mentorship and guidance of professors and teachers in the ceramics department at Kansas State, and without these mentors, The Object Enthusiast would not have been born. Emily focuses primarily on creating functional objects that elevate the everyday while also branching off into some sculptural and conceptual pieces. Over the last year, the focus has shifted from mass production to a slower pace of creation - making sure each piece is brought to life with love and intention. +++++ This episode is sponsored by Schacht Spindle Company. After going through my finished objects (FOs) and works in progress (WIPs), I get back into the details of my spinning from the last two weeks, including a brief and not particularly helpful discussion about Schacht wooden bobbins vs travel bobbins vs Akerworks bobbins. Now, if you have been following my blog posts from late this past summer, you might have noticed that I have recently been bitten by the weaving bug again. My mind has been churning with so many ideas about things I want to put on the loom and weave. I just want to weave all the things. So when I was thinking of guests for the show, I knew I wanted to connect with Denise Renee Grace. If you are a knitter who is thinking about dipping your toe into the world of weaving, Denise has some great suggestions on how to get started. And if you are already a weaver and considering doing some more production-type weaving, Denise also has time-saving techniques that she will share with us. If you are at all interested in weaving and weaving with knitting yarn, I encourage you to join us for this conversation today. If you have ever needed to call or email the Schacht Spindle Company about your spinning wheel or weaving loom, Denise is the friendly voice you hear at the other end of the line. She has been working with Schacht for 7 years as product specialist (mechanical maven). But when she's not helping people with their spinning and weaving equipment, she has been on a path to becoming a production weaver under the name Filament Fiber Art.
