The Texas Senate on Tuesday gave initial approval to a much-anticipated bill aiming to tamp down on the mailing of abortion pills into the state. The bill, if signed into law, would create a new pathway for enforcing Texas' strict abortion ban. It would allow regular citizens to file civil lawsuits against anyone who distributes abortion pills within Texas or anyone who mails abortion pills to Texas. In other news, Texas' business-friendly climate has helped make it the “headquarters of headquarters.” With Dallas becoming what Christopher Kleinert, chief executive officer of Hunt Realty Investments, recently called an “epicenter for financial activity,” many Fortune 500 companies are planting down roots in the region, or adding to their Texas operations; the sale of lab-grown meat has been banned in Texas for two years as part of Senate Bill 261. The law states that “a person may not manufacture, process, possess, distribute, offer for sale, or sell cell-cultured protein.” Although its production and use were not widespread in the state, some believe its ban violates people's constitutional rights, impacting what consumers can and can't purchase; and cases of COVID-19 are spiking in Texas as a new variant spreads across much of the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID variant XFG, nicknamed Stratus, accounts for three-fourths of COVID cases in the U.S. Learn more about your ad choices. Max talks with Tom Turner, Executive Director of the American Bonanza Society's Air Safety Foundation, about an extraordinary initiative to preserve the operational future of the iconic V-tail Bonanza aircraft. When Textron Aviation quietly stopped producing the magnesium ruddervator skins—a unique flight control surface used only on V-tail Bonanzas—it left over 5,000 aircraft potentially grounded due to a lack of repair parts. Even minor damage could make these aircraft unrepairable. To solve this crisis, the ABS Air Safety Foundation awarded the $500,000 Maciel Ruddervator Prize to SRS Aviation of Minnesota. Tom explains the history and challenges behind the ruddervator issue: the original parts were made from a now-obsolete thickness of magnesium, which is no longer commonly produced. Even worse, the chemical process used to harden the magnesium is so caustic and environmentally hazardous that almost no facility could perform it anymore. SRS Aviation, already experienced in building replacement aluminum control surfaces, initially declined to compete. But after realizing no one else was pursuing a solution, they took on the challenge, developing their own safe and FAA-acceptable hardening process. They eventually met the prize's requirements, which included certifying replacement skins for all three ruddervator design variants and producing at least 100 completed kits to prove production viability. Tom also discusses the origin of the prize money: a generous bequest from Manny Maciel, a quiet aircraft fueler in Santa Rosa, California, who left $5 million to aviation safety research. The ABS Air Safety Foundation received $1 million of this funding, which it used to underwrite the prize. Tom emphasizes that the Foundation structured the award not just to incentivize a solution, but to ensure long-term support for V-tail Bonanza owners. The story also touches on how the ruddervator issue impacted aircraft valuations and even insurance policies—some insurers were unwilling to total aircraft with ruddervator damage, knowing repairs were impossible. Tom notes that after the prize was announced, Textron resumed limited production of the original ruddervator skins, showing how serious ABS was about finding a solution. Max wraps up by asking what other challenges might face Bonanza owners. Tom replies that while issues will always arise, most are solvable. We visited a lot of wine regions in the world for the meetings, both fun and a necessity, and one of them was Mendoza and loved the climate - a really interesting climate from the point of view of creating flavors and grapes, and really liked the lifestyle as well. We essentially decided it'd be interesting to do something small there that also gives us a second harvest during New Year's. So we can practice twice as often. That was the driver, the potential quality there. They've been talking about this for probably the 40 years that they've been making wine and and they want to figure out how to have lasting consumer engagement. They have a lot of devoted buyers, but they also know kind of the monopoly culture is that, well, if the wine you were looking for today isn't on the shelf, you can buy something else. Promoting the message of buying directly from the wineries, and if you want to try that wine that's made in Nova Scotia or BC, that you actually can order it and have it shipped to your home province. Those interprovincial trade barriers aren't real. There's lots of wine shipping that's taking place already. Prior to that, that meant there were a few really large wineries, not really making estate or single vineyards. Vineyards were a source of bulk wine for the most part. The hunt for the vineyard became a very important one. We looked at over 230 vineyards before we found one. I think everyone there was on the verge of giving up on this, thinking “Well, they're not really going to buy anything.” Because we'd get it to a certain stage, then we do soil analysis, and we weren't quite happy, or we talked to people who had made wine from the vineyard or something would come up, and we just wouldn't quite be where we wanted to be with the quality of the vineyard. I often work on the basis of paradigms, where I'll take a look at a wine sold throughout the world and say, you know, I think this could be done really well in this area. You know what it is you might be able to accomplish within the parameters that you have - the obvious things, the terroir, the exposures to soils, the temperatures in general.   About Ann Sperling & Peter Gamble Often referred to as the “power couple” of the Canadian wine industry, Peter Gamble and Ann Sperling have long pursued the pinnacles of wine quality in Canadian vineyards and wineries. Following her upbringing on her family's Okanagan Valley vineyard, Ann turned to the soil for the character and complexity of her wines. Acknowledged as a Canadian pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, ‘terroir' was at the centre of her philosophy and she is renowned for her head winemaking roles at Malivoire, Southbrook, and Sperling Vineyards. Peter, a lifetime wine industry professional, has worked alongside Canada's most passionate winemakers to achieve greater heights with our finest appellation wines. Since 2000, Peter has provided expertise in ultra-premium winemaking operations, including: Stratus, Ravine, Benjamin Bridge and Lightfoot & Wolfville.
