It's the holiday season, and in this bonus episode, we're going back to our SweaterFest celebration. In early December we threw a party for Muni fans and the community at large in honor of our “Icons of San Francisco” holiday sweater. We sipped hot chocolate, enjoyed music and comedy, wrote haikus about Muni, and embraced the joy of San Francisco and its transportation system. So, grab some nog and join us for a dose of good cheer!

Keeping Warm: Countering the Cold with Warming Herbs

There's something about winter that makes us want to bundle up and get warm. And while many of us do this with sweaters, a beanie, and thick wool socks, there's another critical way we stay warm: Through the herbs and food we eat. In many herbal traditions, plants are often split into warming or cooling. A cooling herb might be great in summer, but it can leave you feeling off-balance during the cold winter months. That's why it's important to turn to warming herbs and spices that heat us up from the inside out. By doing this, we not only stay warmer, but we also come a little bit closer to living in harmony with nature's cycles. In today's episode, you'll learn: How living in harmony with the seasons connects us with nature  Why using warming herbs keeps us balanced, vital, and healthy during winter The main actions, energetics, and affinities of warming herbs How to use simple warming spices you already have at home My favorite recipes for warming teas, herbal lattes, and even a few cocktails   ———————————— CONNECT WITH SAJAH AND WHITNEY ———————————— To get free in depth mini-courses and videos, visit our blog at:  http://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com   Get daily inspiration and plant wisdom on our Facebook and Instagram channels: http://www.facebook.com/EvolutionaryHerbalism https://www.instagram.com/evolutionary_herbalism/   Be sure to subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyP63opAmcpIAQg1M9ShNSQ   Get a free 5-week course when you buy a copy of the book, Evolutionary Herbalism: https://www.evolutionaryherbalism.com/evolutionary-herbalism-book/   ———————————— ABOUT THE PLANT PATH ———————————— The Plant Path is a window into the world of herbal medicine. With perspectives gleaned from traditional Western herbalism, Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine, Alchemy, Medical Astrology, and traditional cultures from around the world, The Plant Path provides unique insights, skills and strategies for the practice of true holistic herbalism. From clinical to spiritual perspectives, we don't just focus on what herbs are "good for," but rather who they are as intelligent beings, and how we can work with them to heal us physically and consciously evolve.   ———————————— ABOUT SAJAH ———————————— Sajah Popham is the author of Evolutionary Herbalism and the founder of the School of Evolutionary Herbalism, where he trains herbalists in a holistic system of plant medicine that encompasses clinical Western herbalism, medical astrology, Ayurveda, and spagyric alchemy. His mission is to develop a comprehensive approach that balances the science and spirituality of plant medicine, focusing on using plants to heal and rejuvenate the body, clarify the mind, open the heart, and support the development of the soul. This is only achieved through understanding and working with the chemical, energetic, and spiritual properties of the plants. His teachings embody a heartfelt respect, honor and reverence for the vast intelligence of plants in a way that empowers us to look deeper into the nature of our medicines and ourselves. He lives on a homestead in the foothills of Mt. Baker Washington with his wife Whitney where he teaches, consults clients, and prepares spagyric herbal medicines.    ———————————— WANT TO FEATURE US ON YOUR PODCAST? ———————————— If you'd like to interview Sajah or Whitney to be on your podcast, click here to fill out an interview request form.

Date: 07.12.2022 Join Aneeq ur Rehman and Tariq Bajwa for Wednesday's show from 4-6pm where we will be discussing Keeping Warm in Winter and Shariah Law. Keeping Warm in Winter; With current global affairs such as the Ukrainian War, Brexit, and the post pandemic world affecting the UK's economy, the cost of living crisis has hit households hard. Wintertime can make such issues worse, as temperatures continue to drop. This year, it is even more important to focus on keeping warm and looking after ourselves, as well as the people around us. Shariah Law; The mutation of the concept of Shariah in various schools of jurisprudence began as early as the third century of Islam and continues today. Science and the Sea podcast

It's hard to imagine that land around the top of the northern Pacific Ocean would have been more hospitable during the last ice age than it is today. But there's evidence of just that. The conditions might have allowed people to begin the migration from Asia to the Americas. And a recent study suggested a possible reason for the milder weather: stronger currents in the North Pacific. At the peak of the ice age, more than 20,000 years ago, much more water was frozen in glaciers. As a result, sea level in that region was hundreds of feet lower than it is today. That exposed the bottom of the Bering Sea, creating a “bridge” of land between Asia and North America.Scientists have found evidence that the climate there was livable -- perhaps even warmer than the region is today. People from Asia may have lived there for thousands of years. They were cut off from the rest of the world by ice, so they settled in.The new study looked at samples from the sediments at the bottom of the Pacific. The samples record conditions during the ice age. Researchers compared those conditions to models of ocean circulation. They concluded that the region was warmed by the Pacific. A current in the ocean brought warm, salty water from the tropics. It acted much like present-day currents in the North Atlantic, which warm parts of Europe. That kept conditions fairly comfortable until the glaciers melted -- making it possible for the inhabitants to begin spreading across the Americas.

What is it like to be on a narrowboat in the grip of a winter’s cold spell? How do you keep warm on a boat?  Living and working on the canal systems in winter has been notoriously difficult and hard. In this episode we reflect on what it entails to live on the canals in winter today. We also hear a piece of Victorian reportage by a journalist travelling on the Grand Union Junction flyboat, Stourport, in the late 1850s. We also find out why liveaboard boaters could be viewed as ‘floating hobbits.’Journal entry:“3rd January Sunday.I went out into the soundless sphere of night as the New Year was dawning and said “This is me and I am here. You seem so big and dark and unknown.” But I have known your brothers and sisters and have learnt to revel in the days of their sunshine and find their special beauties under skies of steel and water.Today is filled with clinging fog that chills the marrow and makes the bones ache, but your suns will soon come, and larks will sweep the skies again.Welcome.” Episode InformationIn the welcome section I mention the work of Andrew Plummer and his magnificent photographs. You can find inexpensive winter coats at thrift stores such as Value Village, Double Take, Johns Thrift Store, or Vintage Depot Our second segment will be from a show we had done before on Youth and Homelessness. We interviewed Jesse Sudirgo who worked at Yonge Street Mission. The Yonge Street Mission is an organization in the downtown sector that aims to help support Toronto's most susceptible population. At A Verb for Keeping Warm we work with many textile makers, teachers and artists. We hope to share with you some of those people and their work to inspire your own work. Youngmin Lee is a Korean born textile artist living in the SF Bay Area who teaches at A Verb for Keeping Warm. Her work features the beautiful and intricate Korean textile art of patchwork known as jogakbo. This patchwork is mostly seen on traditional wrapping cloths called bojagi. These wrapping cloths impart the maker’s wish for happiness among other good fortune for the receiver of the gift. Each piece Youngmin makes is hand stitched with intention and delicate skill. She teaches these techniques and Korean culture around the world to share this eloquent textile heritage. Kristine and Adrienne interviewed Youngmin Lee in person about her work, how she got started making, and the history and cultural significance of these textiles in Korea. The Soccer Sidelines
#50 – Keeping Warm on Cold Days

The Soccer Sidelines

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 15, 2018 15:43

Being Cold is No Fun It's amazing to me how many parents I see every year on the sidelines who are unprepared for the weather. I expect this from my teenaged kids, but when I see full grown adults shivering on the sidelines, I think I need to do an episode on this subject. There is no good reason for you to be cold on the sidelines of a soccer field. The weather will adjust the way you dress for it, but warmth is your right. Teeth chattering is probably not encouraged by the American Dental Association. And blue finger tips are not attractive. Weather is Relative There is a big difference between running around in 50 degree temperatures vs sitting on a cloth chair in 50 degrees. Your activity level make a huge difference in how you feel at a game. If you're sitting still in 50 degree weather, be prepared to be cold. If you're running around in 50 degree weather, you're probably grateful to have things a little cooler. A wet 50 degree day is much colder that a dry 50 degree day thanks to the added evaporative effect of wet clothing against the skin. Windy days can penetrate layers. Hill tops or large flat surfaces like a soccer field with no wind break can amplify the wind effect. Take this stuff seriously. People can and have suffered hypothermia in 50 degree temperatures - especially when they're wet from sweat or other bad weather like rain or snow. Taking Care of Players Players have special needs. Here are a few thoughts on players: Benched players will be colder than players who are actively running. Wet (sweaty) players will lose any heat they have quickly and can suffer shivering cold easily if not cared for on the bench Goalkeepers will likely be colder than field players - especially if they are not seeing much action. Injuries are more likely when players are not warmed up and their muscles, ligaments, and tendons are not activated before strenuous play Wet balls slap and hurt! Slippery wet fields make players prone to injury. Players are wearing light weight wicking clothing in most cases - regardless of the weather Dehydrated players don't have as much fluid in their bodies to circulate and keep them warm as hydrated players Here are some things that make cold days a little more manageable for players: Proper warm ups are important. It's not good to take human bodies form cold and stiff to full on game-like activities levels too quickly. I suggest having players show up a little earlier on cold days. Get the soccer cleats on. Get some activation exercises like lunges, opening-the-gate, closing-the-gate, high kicks, etc. going. Next, move players into some activities that encourages touches on the ball: rondos, passing exercises, etc. Don't forget about your goalkeepers! Keepers need to be loose and limber, gloves warmed up, bodies warmed up, etc. Hydrate well the day before a game. This is true for every game, but it's even more important when players are going to be exposed to extremes in weather. Water helps the blood to circulate - which helps to keep the muscles well fueled and the body thermostat in good working order. Have a blanket for the bench. Benches can be pretty cold and they will suck the heat right out of players if they're allowed to sit on a cold bench for a prolonged period. Keep players who are getting ready to go in warmed up. Make them do jogs or high knees down to the corner flags and back. It's never a good idea to let people sit and get cold. Better to warm up through moving, than by huddling up under a blanket and getting stiff. Though a blanket is better than not having one. When players come off, have them sip some water. We need to keep replenishing the body with fluids to keep the kids hydrated and moving. Keep an eye on your goalkeepers during games. Any player that's not working hard will cool down quickly and start getting stiff. This is when injuries happen. Keep everyone loose and limber.

On October 7th he posted on Facebook that he was just two weeks away from completing his trip. When ARR host, Jim, spoke to Spencer, he was stuck at the border in Venezuela, unable to cross in to Colombia. His alternative? A 7000 km detour which will add two months to the trip. http://www.spencer-conway.com/ Brrrrr….Keeping the Chill Out and the Heat In On Your Bike In the Northern Hemisphere, we’re starting to experience some chilly weather, and dedicated motorcyclists like to push the season, riding until the snow flies. Weather can be unpredictable, starting off chilly, warming up and then cooling down again, all in one day. So, being prepared for cold weather this time of year is important. Some of you might be lucky and live in year round warm climates, or maybe it’s spring for you right now and you’re aching to get out and ride, cold or not. Either way, we’ve got some great tips from author and retired instructor, David Hough, Aerostich’s founder, Andy Goldfine and we also talked to Bryan Miller and John Sullivan, the owner’s of Hippo Hands. David L Hough - Author & Instructor David is a world traveller, a certified motorcycle safety instructor and the author of several books. He’s become a regular on Adventure Rider Radio, a valued source of information when it comes to riding motorcycles, including sidecars and trikes. When it comes to riding in the cold, after 36 years of commuting to work by motorcycle in Port Angeles, Washington, who better to give some tips on keeping warm? Andy Goldfine - Aerostich Founder Aerostich are manufacturers of rider gear in the United States, and they’ve been designing and manufacturing clothing for about 34 years. Andy Goldfine has some great tips on what to wear to keep warm. www.aerostich.com Bryan Miller & John Sullivan - Hippo Hands There are gloves and then there are Hippo Hands, motorcycle hand covers designed to keep your hands warm and dry. www.hippohands.com Show Sponsors: Max BMW BestRest Products Green Chile Adventure Gear Motobriiz IMS ProductsPSSOR Music by Jason Shaw at www.audionautix.com

Afterwards, we took a brief detour to get some AMAZING frozen yogurt, then went to the show-and-tell at Purlescence. Sunday: Jasmin and Gigi took the "Design Your Own Sock Architecture" class with Cat Bordhi, who we chatted with in September. Combined with the Lucy Neatby class, our minds were blown. Jasmin went to the show floor to pick up some Oak Grove yarn (to darn a pair socks) for Andrew.
