YoutubeFacebookXInstagramBioNORTHERN KENTUCKY – Orchid in the Ivy, the hard-hitting alternative rock triofronted by Brett Scharf, is turning heads with the re-release of their fiery, pop-punkrendition of “Beds Are Burning.” Originally recorded some time ago, the band recentlyremixed and relaunched the track to pave the way for their upcoming five-songEP—proving that rock is far from dead and Scharf's creative fire is still blazing.“We did a new mix,” says Scharf of the Midnight Oil classic. “We kinda did it a whileago, and we basically did a whole remix... people will maybe recognize it a little bit andthen kinda get your feet wet again with it—and then go with the five song EP after that.”The result? A faster, sharper, and more aggressive version of the politically chargedanthem—reborn through Orchid in the Ivy's melodic punk-rock lens. “I always thought ithad a great groove to it,” Scharf explains. “I was messing around with it one day andjust thought, ‘God, if we sped this up, this would be more like almost a punk rock tune.' Idon't think they realized how kind of heavy and punk rock that song could actually be.”For Scharf, who once toured alongside now-household names like Fall Out Boy andMotion City Soundtrack in his early band Spindle, Orchid in the Ivy represents a rebirth.After years of navigating the ups and downs of multiple projects, including RosemaryDevice, Scharf stepped into the role of lead singer “more out of necessity than anythingelse.” That unplanned shift uncovered a sound—and voice—that finally felt right.“I put some vocals down on a couple songs and asked my drummer what he thought.He liked it, and we just kept going forward that way,” says Scharf.Since forming in 2013, Orchid in the Ivy has remained fiercely self-sufficient. The bandrecords everything at Scharf's own studio, allowing them the space to experiment andevolve. “We were trying to really find out our sound,” Scharf says. “I think in the last fiveor six years, we really found our voice.”That voice blends the emotional punch of Brand New's The Devil and God Are RagingInside Me with the melodic grit of Alkaline Trio's Crimson and the urgency of RiseAgainst. The upcoming EP, while not including “Beds Are Burning,” follows hot on itsheels, with singles set to roll out every six to eight weeks.“There's a little more emotion involved in this one,” Scharf notes of the new material.“The stuff I've been writing for this EP—and even the next one—is just a little morepersonal. With everything going on in the world, it just seems like a chaotic time.”Though Scharf's journey has spanned decades and many stages, his passion hasnever faded. “The older I got, the better the writing got,” he says. “There's always beenthat inspiration of finding new music, being creative. In this episode we explore spindle neurons, also known as von Economo neurons (VENs), discovered by Constantine von Economo in the 1920s. These large, cylinder-shaped cells, found in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), anterior (or called frontoinsula) insula, and rarely the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), are crucial for rapid communication in social behaviors. Three key points stand out: first, spindle neurons are located exclusively in the ACC and insula, the core hubs of the salience network, which is disrupted in autism as early as six weeks of age, as shown in a UCLA study. Second, these neurons are primarily involved in social behaviors, underpinning complex interactions in humans and other social species. Third, they are rare, found only in highly social animals like great apes, cetaceans, and possibly elephants, highlighting their evolutionary significance. In autism, increased spindle neuron density in the insula of children aged 4–14 is linked to early brain overgrowth, though this normalizes in adulthood due to pruning.The salience network, driven by the ACC and anterior insula, relies on spindle neurons to process relevant stimuli, integrate sensory data, and guide social-emotional responses. In autism, hyper-connectivity between the insula and sensory regions causes sensory hypersensitivity, while hypo-connectivity with prefrontal areas, including the DLPFC, impairs social cognition and adaptive behaviors. This disrupts the network's ability to switch between the default mode network and executive functions, often trapping autistic individuals in an internal world. BUFFALO, NY- August 14, 2024 – A new #casereport was #published in Oncotarget's Volume 15 on July 17, 2024, entitled, “Rapid but nondurable response of a BRAF exon 15 double-mutated spindle cell sarcoma to a combination of BRAF and MEK inhibitors.” As noted in the introduction of the Abstract, the BRAF V600E substitution predicts a cancer's sensitivity to BRAF inhibitor therapy, though the mutation is rarely found in soft-tissue sarcomas. Researchers Kseniya Sinichenkova, Iliya Sidorov, Nataliya Kriventsova, Dmitriy Konovalov, Ruslan Abasov, Nataliya Usman, Alexander Karachunskiy, Galina Novichkova, Dmitriy Litvinov, and Alexander Druy from the Dmitriy Rogachev National Medical Research Center of Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, Immunology (Ministry of Healthcare of Russian Federation) and the Research Institute of Medical Cell Technologies in Yekaterinburg, Russia, describe a case of undifferentiated spindle cell sarcoma that exhibited primary insensitivity to standard chemotherapy and a pronounced but non-sustained response to BRAF/MEK inhibitors at recurrence.
