Fiber is one of the most universally recommended nutrients for gut health, and in most cases that recommendation comes from a good place with good intentions. But there are specific scenarios where more fiber adds insult to injury, and most of the standard advice doesn't account for them. Inside today's episode, I walk through three situations where increasing fiber can actually make symptoms worse. I cover the motility and serotonin physiology behind that finding, the supporting interventions that pair with a short-term fiber reduction, and why this episode is about finding the right dose and the right types of fiber for the right people rather than demonizing fiber across the board.Topics Discussed: - When Fiber Backfires- Stacked Fibers from Processed Foods- Soluble Corn Fiber and Resistant Wheat Starch- Therapeutic Supplemental Fibers- FODMAPs and Gut Symptoms- SIBO and Diarrhea-Dominant IBS- Food and Symptom Tracking- The Zero Fiber Constipation Study- Motility, Serotonin, and the Gut- Right Dose, Right Type, Right Person---------- My Live Program for Coaches: The Functional Nutrition and Metabolism Specialization www.metabolismschool.com---------- [Free] Metabolism School 101: The Video Serieshttp://www.metabolismschool.com/metabolism-101----------Subscribe to My Youtube Channel: https://youtube.com/@sammillerscience?si=s1jcR6Im4GDHbw_1----------Grab a Copy of My New Book - Metabolism Made Simple---------- Stay Connected: Instagram: @sammillerscienceYoutube: SamMillerScience Facebook: The Nutrition Coaching Collaborative CommunityTikTok: @sammillerscience----------“This Podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute the practice of medicine, nursing or other professional health care services, including the giving of medical advice, and no doctor/patient relationship is formed. Why was 2026 the specific moment you decided to use the world's loudest stage to talk about the "Fiber Gap"?Fiber has historically been marketed as a functional necessity for the "older" demographic. How are you using this campaign to pivot the narrative from a "health trend" to a "tasty daily routine" for everyone from Gen Z to Boomers? You partnered with Gary Vaynerchuk's team to bring humor and high-profile talent to a topic as "unsexy" as gut health. How do you, as a 25-year CPG veteran, balance the "legacy brand guardrails" of Kellogg's with the fast-paced, "attention-first" creative style of VaynerMedia? You chose a regional and streaming-first buy for the Big Game rather than a traditional national spot. As Chief Growth Officer, how did you justify the "reach vs. precision" trade-off to your board?Gut health can be clinical and boring. Talk to me about the decision-making process behind using humor. Does "funny" actually move units of Raisin Bran and Mini-Wheats, or is it just about winning the "Ad Meter" rankings? With a streaming-first approach, you have more data than a traditional TV buy. How is WK Kellogg using real-time signals from this campaign to adjust shelf-level execution in the weeks following the game? You've been in this game for over 25 years. What is the one "old school" CPG rule you had to break to make this 2026 Super Bowl campaign a reality? When you go big on a Super Bowl scale, the pressure on the supply chain is immense. How did the $500M modernization of your plants allow you to "lean in" to this demand spike in a way you couldn't have three years ago? Before the campaign went live, did you use AI-driven "attention analytics" or "predictive creative" tools to ensure the humor would land across different demographics, or was this a "gut-feel" (pun intended) decision? If this "Fiber Gap" campaign succeeds, you aren't just selling boxes of cereal—you're changing a category's trajectory. This week on the Hemp Show, Larry Smart returns to talk about Ursa Alta, the new low-THC hemp variety that Cornell AgriTech has released for commercial production. The variety has been seven years in the making. "We had come up with a new cultivar that was distinct, uniform and stable. That's our definition of a cultivar," Smart said. Ursa Alta, which means tall bear and is named for the Cornell mascot, is a fiber variety with low THC and a high hurd ratio. While bred for conditions in New York state, Smart said the variety excels in southern latitudes as well. "This variety does grow very well in Texas," Smart said. "My collaborator, Calvin Trostel, is based in Lubbock, at about the same latitude as where they're growing for Panda Biotech. So we think it will grow quite well in that area and yield quite well for them." Panda Biotech, owner of the second largest hemp processing facility in the world, is based in Wichita Falls, TX. Cornell has licensed seed multiplication to Condor Seed Production in Yuma, Arizona. Condor has a deep history of vegetable seed production — onions, artichokes, brassicas — and brings more than 40 years of experience to the work. Smart provided Condor with 110 pounds of breeder seed to start the multiplication process, with an ambitious target ahead: "to scale up the seed from 110 pounds of breeder seed to hopefully by next year, somewhere between three and 400,000 pounds of seed. And then they can start really selling it," Smart said. Listen to show to learn more. The conversation covers the cultivar development process, AOSCA seed certification, Plant Variety Protection, and the URSA trademark, offering growers and industry professionals a detailed look at what it means to release a new hemp variety in today's regulatory environment. Larry Smart explains the seed multiplication process that took Ursa Alta from 110 pounds of breeder seed to a projected 300,000 to 400,000 pounds of certified planting seed, with Condor Seed Production in Yuma, Arizona playing a central role. The episode details the agronomic challenges of desert hemp seed production, including heat-related pollen failure, photoperiod complications, and extreme weather events, and explains why the September-to-January growing window in Arizona emerged as the viable solution for large-scale seed multiplication. The episode also addresses hemp cultivar intellectual property, seed licensing, and the contrast between open-source wheat breeding culture and the more restricted IP environment in hemp. Larry Smart discusses end markets for Ursa Alta fiber including hempcrete construction, textile applications, and industrial fiber processing, with growers in Montana, Texas, and South Dakota identified as early adoption targets. Additional topics include the Farm Bill's certified seed provisions, zero-cannabinoid hemp variety development, and the role of AOSCA-certified seed in navigating hemp's evolving federal regulatory landscape. The episode opens with a tribute to Dr. Bob Pierce of the University of Kentucky, a pioneer in American hemp agronomy, and closes with a seven-year callback to Larry Smart's first appearance on the show in 2019, when the vision for what would become Ursa Alta was first discussed publicly. This episode is essential listening for hemp farmers, seed producers, plant breeders, fiber processors, and anyone tracking the development of industrial hemp as a certified, scalable agricultural commodity in the United States.

The episode opens with introductions to the panel, including Kurt Cotanch, Gianni Raffrenato, Steve Martin, and Jacob Copeland, establishing a diverse mix of academic, applied, and field-based expertise in dairy nutrition and forage systems. (00:00 – 07:39)  The conversation begins with a deep dive into forage quality, emphasizing the importance of harvest timing, speed, and efficiency. The panel discusses how mold and yeast contamination can compromise digestibility—both in the lab and in the rumen—and how improving harvest practices can significantly impact overall feed value. (07:39 – 12:35)  From there, the discussion broadens to regional feeding strategies, comparing dairy systems across environments such as the Northeast and Western U.S. The panel highlights how forage availability, climate, and production goals influence diet formulation, and how nutritionists adapt fiber strategies to maintain performance under very different conditions. (12:36 – 17:31)  Attention then turns to practical, on-farm evaluation tools, particularly the use of shaker boxes. While sometimes considered outdated, the panel reinforces their value in assessing particle size distribution, identifying ration inconsistencies, and helping bridge the gap between theoretical models and real-world feeding outcomes. (17:32 – 23:04)  A significant portion of the episode focuses on troubleshooting fiber digestibility in nutrition models, particularly within NDS and CNCPS systems. The panel explores how to interpret digestibility values, adjust degradation rates, and calibrate models based on observed animal performance—while also emphasizing the importance of accurate inputs, including feed descriptions and animal data. (25:27 – 32:10)  The conversation also highlights the complexity of fiber as a nutrient, discussing concepts such as undigested NDF pools, passage rate, and the interaction between physical and chemical fiber characteristics. The panel reinforces that while models provide structure, effective nutrition still requires experience, observation, and critical thinking. Finally, the episode looks ahead to the future of dairy nutrition, examining the growing role of artificial intelligence in ration formulation. While AI and large language models show promise, the panel raises important concerns about their ability to capture biological nuance, emphasizing that human expertise, on-farm observation, and scientific judgment will remain essential. (39:25 – 44:38)  The episode concludes with key takeaways from each speaker, reinforcing the importance of responsible model use, accurate data inputs, and maintaining a strong connection between computer-generated rations and real-world cow performance.  Please subscribe and share with your industry friends. Your gut is running more of your life than you think.I sit down with Dr. Karan Rajan, NHS surgeon, gut health researcher, and one of the clearest science communicators working today, to talk about why fiber is one of the most powerful levers you have for long-term health, how the gut shapes your mood and brain function, and what most people are getting dangerously wrong about protein, GLP-1s, and extreme elimination diets. This isn't a conversation about cleanses or cutting food groups. It's about understanding your gut as a living system that responds directly to what you feed it, within 48 hours. What we explore:- How the gut microbiome directly shapes mood, mental health, and brain function and why diet is often the missing variable in depression treatment.- Why high-protein, low-fiber eating is silently damaging your colon and what the data says about finding the right balance.- What prebiotics, probiotics, and polyphenols actually do inside your body and how to combine them for maximum impact without buying a single supplement.- How GLP-1 medications affect the gut microbiome and why you have to plan proactively for fiber and nutrient deficiencies if you're on one.- Why fasting, spices, and something as simple as eating with your hands can meaningfully shift your gut health and the four lifestyle levers that matter more than any test or supplement.Chapters:00:00 Introduction02:24 Why High Performers Are the Last to Take Care of Themselves07:07 From Gut Surgeon to Microbiome Advocate: Dr. Karan Rajan's Origin Story10:09 The Gut Bacteria Linked to Depression That Antidepressants Ignore14:00 Prebiotics vs Probiotics vs Polyphenols: What Each One Actually Does17:31 How to Add Fiber Without Destroying Your Social Life20:36 The Protein Mistake Even Healthy People Make29:21 How to Optimize the Pregnant Microbiome Before and During Pregnancy33:12 What Your Poop Tells You That Your Oura Ring Never Will43:36 Fasting Windows, Saunas, and What Science Says About Gut Health47:23 GLP-1s Are Changing Your Microbiome: What You Need to Add Back57:06 Why Treating One Organ at a Time Is Failing Patients01:07:27 10 More Grams of Fiber Cuts Colon Cancer Risk by 10%About Dr. Karan Rajan:Dr. Karan Rajan is an NHS surgeon and clinical lecturer who trained in general and colorectal surgery before becoming one of the most trusted voices in online health education. The average American gets only about 10 to 15 grams of fiber a day, which is less than half the recommended 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men. Most of us don't realize we're falling short until digestion starts to feel off: bloating, constipation, sluggishness, and that uncomfortable “never quite right” feeling. If you're on a GLP-1 medication, low fiber intake can matter even more, since constipation is one of the most common and frustrating side effects. So how do we close the gap without overhauling everything we eat?In this episode, I walk you through simple, realistic ways to build more fiber into your day. Claim your complimentary gift of my exclusive mini weight care guide today!Link: Weight Care Guide — Dr. Francavilla Show (thedrfrancavillashow.com)Have you ever wondered if counting calories is actually worth your time — or if it's just another diet trap dressed up in a tracking app? In this week's episode, we talk about just that, and the answer is more nuanced than a simple yes or no. Calories are real, they matter, and paying attention to them can be genuinely useful — but the way many people approach calorie counting is often where things go sideways. Here's the thing though — calories are calculated using a  lab device. Which means it doesn't take into account how the body actually processes those calories. You digest food, respond to it hormonally, and process it completely differently depending on what you're actually eating, not just how much. Protein burns some of its own calories just through digestion. Fiber doesn't get absorbed at all. And the same 100 calories from apple juice versus a whole apple with peanut butter will hit your body in completely different ways — one spikes your blood sugar and leaves you hungry again fast, the other keeps you full and satisfied for hours. Same number on paper, totally different story inside your body. That's why the old "calories in, calories out" model, while not entirely wrong, is a pretty significant oversimplification. Your metabolism adapts, your hunger hormones shift, and the quality of what you eat plays just as important a role as the quantity. Calories are one important piece of the puzzle — but they're far from the whole picture. In this episode, we cover:Why Not All Calories Are Created EqualMacros, Metabolism, and Why Your Body Isn't a MachineLog Like a Scientist, Not a JudgeWhen You've Already Done the WorkDitch the "I Blew It" MentalityThere's a lot more where this came from — tune into the full episode and you might just walk away thinking about food completely differently.Connect with me:Instagram: doctorfrancavillaFacebook: Help Your Patients Lose Weight with Dr. FrancavillaWebsite: Dr. Francavilla ShowYoutube: The Doctor Francavilla ShowGLP Strong: glpstrong.com

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend!   I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks…   Bernice: Hi Doc, First, thank you so much for your podcast. I absolutely love it! My favorite day is Friday. I always enjoy hearing about the research and new products. I learned about psyllium husk on your podcast and I have been taking it every day. I wanted to ask you about Zen Basil. Is this something that we should also consider taking as well as a fiber source? It looks like there are 15 grams per serving! Thanks so much!! Bernice       Genel: Hi Dr. Cabral, thank you for your work. About 5 years ago I had tuberculosis and long-term treatment. Since then I've had ongoing issues: persistent joint pain and unstable weight. I struggle to gain weight and often lose it without clear reason. Recent labs showed elevated rheumatoid factor (147.6 IU/mL), high ESR (38), and slightly low hemoglobin, suggesting inflammation or rheumatoid arthritis. I currently take DNS, Omega-3, and D3. What additional supplements could help lower inflammation and support recovery? I live outside the US and can order supplements, but EquiLife support said lab results cannot be processed from my country. I don't want to make the detox cause I don't want to lose the little weight I have. What protocol can I follow? Thank you again for your guidance.      Katherine: Hi Doc. Thank you for all you do in helping all of us. I was looking into get a vibration plate and was wondering which one you would recommend. To date, I didn't find one on your resource page or previous podcast. Would you consider recommending one in the future? Thank you!      Eli: Hi, Dr. Cabral, I feel like I can't get ahold of my appetite, both behaviorally and physiologically. I also deal with a huge amount of food noise. I notice when I eat a large breakfast, say from a restaurant, I can go basically the entire day without eating. Is it OK to flip meals - dinner for breakfast, regular lunch, and breakfast for dinner? Are there any studies or positive impacts of doing so? Why don't more health professionals talk about this type of practice? It seems as if it would be good for people. I'm desperate to try anything for my appetite and food noise problem. Thank you so much for answering my question!       Sheena: Hi Dr. C! hope you and your team are well. I'm a 46 year old female experiencing peri-menopause symptoms. My endocrinologist prescribed me birth control pills to help alleviate some of the symptoms which helped for about 8 mths only but now I'm considering HRT. I purchased the Big 5 and want to know if I need to come off BCP for accurate results? If so, how long should I be off before testing? If not, will I need to notify labs in advance? If I'm on HRT, will my results be accurate for Stress Mood test? And my last question, when doing the Detox, am I allowed to take herbal tinctures? (I take tintures daily to support my adrenals and liver). Will that cancel out the effectiveness of the FM and AYU pills? Thx in advance! You are the BEST!     Thank you for tuning into this weekend's Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right!   - - - Show Notes and Resources: StephenCabral.com/3768 - - - Get a FREE Copy of Dr. Cabral's Book: The Rain Barrel Effect - - - Join the Community & Get Your Questions Answered: CabralSupportGroup.com - - - Dr. Cabral's Most Popular At-Home Lab Tests: > Complete Minerals & Metals Test (Test for mineral imbalances & heavy metal toxicity) - - - > Complete Candida, Metabolic & Vitamins Test (Test for 75 biomarkers including yeast & bacterial gut overgrowth, as well as vitamin levels) - - - > Complete Stress, Mood & Metabolism Test (Discover your complete thyroid, adrenal, hormone, vitamin D & insulin levels) - - - > Complete Food Sensitivity Test (Find out your hidden food sensitivities) - - - > Complete Omega-3 & Inflammation Test (Discover your levels of inflammation related to your omega-6 to omega-3 levels) - - - Get Your Question Answered On An Upcoming HouseCall: StephenCabral.com/askcabral - - - Would You Take 30 Seconds To Rate & Review The Cabral Concept? Tim Conway Jr Show Hour 4 (5.29) Conway kicks off the hour with a look at two promising new cholesterol treatments, enlicitide and VERVE-102, both aiming to help lower LDL “bad” cholesterol — but in completely different ways. One sounds like the future of medicine, and the other sounds like Conway is ready to gamble on it like a casino bet. Then the crew dives into the viral Trader Joe’s Sweet & Sour Gummy Worms story. These innocent-looking candies are loaded with fiber, and because the bag doesn’t exactly scream “high fiber warning,” some shoppers are eating way too many and ending up with stomach rumbling, gas, and a surprise bathroom emergency. The ultimate buzzkill candy. Later, Conway tells his Egg McMuffin story after going 35 years without one, explains how he managed to annoy a pharmacist at CVS, and breaks down the chaos of picking up everyone’s Starbucks drinks. The hour wraps with one of the strangest side hustle stories yet: a 23-year-old creator making serious money selling videos of herself farting. Forget Etsy, rideshare, and vintage clothes — this is the new economy, and Conway has questions. cholesterol treatment, LDL cholesterol, VERVE-102, enlicitide, Trader Joe’s gummies, Sweet & Sour Gummy Worms, high fiber candy, bathroom emergency, Egg McMuffin, CVS pharmacy, Starbucks order, weird side hustle, fart videos, viral story, funny podcast, Conway Show See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if there was literally a plastic spoon's worth of microplastics sitting inside your brain right now? In this jaw-dropping and deeply urgent solo episode, Darin Olien breaks down the newest science on microplastics, nanoplastics, brain accumulation, neuroinflammation, endocrine disruption, and the rapidly escalating contamination of the human body. Referencing groundbreaking new research published in Nature Medicine and newly launched U.S. government initiatives, Darin exposes how plastics are no longer just an environmental issue—they are now a human biology issue. From nanoplastics crossing the blood-brain barrier to endocrine-disrupting chemicals like BPA, PFAS, and phthalates accumulating in tissues, placentas, and testes, this episode explores the shocking implications of modern plastic exposure—and, more importantly, what practical steps you can take immediately to reduce your risk.     What You'll Learn The shocking new study finding microplastics in Inside our brains. Inside our blood vessels. Inside unborn children. But while the scale of the problem is staggering, the solution begins with everyday choices. What you drink from. Gut health has become a major focus in nutrition, medicine, and consumer wellness, but the term is often used loosely. Claims about microbiome testing, probiotics, fermented foods, fibre, and "boosting" the gut microbiome are now common, yet the evidence behind these claims varies substantially. In this episode, Dr. Emily Leeming examines what gut health actually refers to, why it cannot be reduced to the microbiome alone, and where current microbiome science is being applied before it is ready. The discussion covers the limits of commercial stool testing, the difficulty of defining a healthy microbiome, and the practical strategies most strongly supported by current evidence. What if everything you've been told about fitness, hormones, dieting, and “healthy habits” was built for the WRONG body? In this episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown, Dr. Stacy Sims (exercise physiologist and leading expert in female nutrition & performance) exposes the shocking truth about why women are STILL misunderstood in science, and how it's silently wrecking health, metabolism, and longevity. Dr. Sims breaks down: – Why women are drastically underrepresented in research (and why it's more complicated than just sexism) – Hidden biological & hormonal differences that make “one-size-fits-all” health advice completely ineffective for women – Dark side of GLP-1 weight loss drugs, diet culture, and over-exercising, and how they're quietly destroying quality of life – Strength training: Why lifting heavy is the key to fat loss, brain health, longevity, & hormonal balance – Alarming link between contraceptives, brain development, anxiety, & bone density in young women – Why fasting doesn't work the same for women & how it can backfire hard – Why women NEED higher body fat & why chasing “lean” can be harmful – Overlooked connection between muscle, glucose control, brain function, & osteoporosis prevention – How poor nutrition is ruining your sleep (and the surprising food that can fix it fast) – Dangers hiding in peptides – Why most multivitamins are failing you (and how too much of ONE nutrient can actually harm you) – Nutrient deficiencies almost everyone is dealing with (especially if you're busy, stressed, & overworked) – Why diet & exercise feel impossible for so many women & the systemic reasons behind it – Science behind saunas, cold plunges, & whether they're actually worth it – Creatine explained like never before: brain fog, stress resilience, ADHD, sleep cycles, muscle performance - who needs it & how much – Why you might be drinking water WRONG (and how overhydration is making you bloated) – Shocking differences in lifespan vs. healthspan between men and women, especially for Alzheimer's & dementia – How strength training can literally protect your brain as you age – 5 NON-NEGOTIABLE habits every woman needs during perimenopause & menopause – Fiber intake mistakes that are wrecking gut health and hormones (especially after 40) – Why Hormone Replacement Therapy isn't the answer for everyone, and what to do instead – How AI & social media are spreading dangerous health misinformation (why women are the biggest targets!) This isn't just another health episode, this is a wake-up call. If you've ever felt like your body isn't responding the way it “should”…you're not broken. The system is. Because it was never just about how much you eat. It's about where that fiber is actually fermenting in your colon. Dr. Karan Rajan is a surgeon, gut health expert, and one of the most followed doctors on the internet. He spent years operating on colon cancers and bowel disease before realizing the most powerful thing he could do was hand people the information they were never given. In this conversation he breaks down the gut in a way that will make you want to reorganize your entire kitchen by the time it's over. In this episode, you'll discover:  • Why the old soluble vs insoluble fiber model is outdated and what fermentation geography actually means — and how eating only one type of fiber can cause gas and bloating even when you're hitting your daily target  • Why the protein obsession sweeping wellness culture may be quietly turning your gut bacteria into gremlins, and what happens when your microbes run out of fiber to eat  • How your microbiome can begin to change within 48 hours of increasing fiber intake, and the exact ramp up strategy Dr. Karan uses to avoid the gas and bloating that makes most people quit If you have a gut, this episode is for you. Should you be fibermaxxing? Here's what the science says

The average person eats 10-15 grams of fiber per day, according to the USDA. The problem? That's WAY under the recommended daily amount. Fiber – a type of carb that our bodies are unable to digest – is prevalent in foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains, and beans. And it's key for everything from feelings of fullness, to gut health, to good poop. That's why a lot of people online are “fibermaxxing”: trying to meet or exceed the daily recommendation of fiber, in hopes it'll improve their health. But how should YOU add fiber to your diet… and are the fibermaxxers overdoing it? Gastroenterologist Berkeley Limketkai is here to help parse the science on how little fiber is too little, how much fiber is too much – and, like Goldilocks, how we can figure out the amount that's just right.Interested in more food and dietary science?
