Our Summer Spin-In is underway so get out your wheels and join us for our annual summer event. We also announce the winners of our Colorwork-A-Long and give more information about our May pattern survey. Take the June Survey about sourcing yarn, fiber, and tools. Full notes with photos and links can be found in the podcast section of our shop website: TwoEwesFiberAdventures.com Join the community on Ravelry or become a patron and support the show on our Patreon Page. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts or Subscribe on Android. Here's a summary of the survey comments on how knitters use patterns and track their progress: People have a preference for paper but lots use digital tools. A recurring theme was the desire to keep knitting as an analog, screen-free hobby. There are lots of creative tools for counting rows. People use highlighter tape, rulers, sticky notes, hand-drawn grid boxes, safety pin chains, a 10-sided die, and even moving a stitch marker along keyboard number keys. We also seem to realize that our systems are imperfect. We don't keep enough or the right kind of notes. We have unsorted stacks of printed patterns, notes we struggle to decode later, or no real system at all. Ravelry is a partial solution to this but doesn't work for everyone. Color Work Along Prizes Listen to the episode to see if you are a winner! Marsha's Projects Trillium Lake by Kay Hopkins: Using Queensland Collection Coastal Cotton Fine. Knit about 8" of the body and completed the increases. Wabi Sabi Tee by Katia: Using Concept by Katia Wabi Sabi. Knit about 12" of the body. Another ½ inch and I'll start ribbing. Patio Furniture Pads: I have finished four round cushions for metal chairs. I think the mis-matched fabric looks good. Next is to sew the cover for the chaise lounge. I have two wooden folding chairs that belonged to my parents. I plan to paint in the same dark green as the table and chairs and recover in the large yellow and white striped fabric. Also have materials to make cushions for chairs. Sewing Class: Attended part two. Garden Redesign: I've created a project page. Kelly's Projects Continuing on my second Boxy with spirit yarn (Shibui Pebble). I have the fronts redone and connected. I'm just knitting stockinette for several inches before I join the front and back under the arms. Tablet (card) weaving for Pride Month: This band will become a dog collar and two key chains for my sisters-in-law. Continuing with spinning the naturally dyed wool from last fall: Dyed the last batches of the CA Red fleece with fig leaves and with ceanothus leaves trying to get a green. The fig gave a slightly green tinted yellow. I had used this before on a skein of polwarth but even quadrupling the grams of fig leaves didn't make the color more saturated. The ceanothus ended up giving another tan color. Natural dyeing can be disappointing. Fleece washing: About 2 lbs of Corriedale came out of the suint bath and is ready for a hot wash. About 3.5 lbs of light silver Romney went into the suint bath and has been there for about a week. I also spent a day washing about 3 lbs of Jazzman that had come out of the suint bath. There was a white section, a light gray section, and a darker gray section. The darker gray is still a little greasy so I may end up soaking it one more time to get more of the lanolin out. Five new Binky Patrol chapters have launched — St. Marys, Georgia; Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania; Janesville, Wisconsin; Sharon, Wisconsin; and a drop-off location near Oregon State University in Corvallis. Pennsylvania's newest chapter made 86 blankets at their very first Binkathon, with a football team and student volunteers showing up to help. June 20th marks Binky Patrol's official 30th anniversary — the date a shout-out on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1996 turned a 30-day-old Laguna Beach group into a national organization, triggering 800+ calls in 48 hours. Some of those original chapters are still active. Oregon volunteers: storage cleanout is this Saturday. Fleece, flannel, cotton, batting, and soft washable yarn only. No stretchy fabric, no sheer curtains, no burlap. The October Binkathon is open to all chapters. Find yours — or start one — at binkypatrol.org. Book Club Podcast: Fiber art veterans Susan Bateman and Melissa Parsons compare notes with host Anne Merrow about the books every weaver, spinner, knitter, and crocheter should have on the bookshelf—plus big news about a classic weaving directory. They're the first books you reach for, the ones you'll never part with, and the first thing you recommend to every new crafter. If you have only one book on weaving, spinning, knitting, and crochet, make it one of these. In this episode of the Long Thread Podcast, three book lovers talk about what reading material we'd never be without. Multishaft Weavers Technique Books Learning to Weave by Deborah Chandler The classic book on four-harness weaving, this updated edition includes clear and approachable explanations, illustrations, and instructions for warping both from front to back and back to front. Weaving for Beginners, Revised and Updated by Peggy Osterkamp Another look at weaving fundamentals, Osterkamp's thorough book is especially strong in back-to-front warping. Pattern Directories Big news for “The Green Book”—A Handweaver's Pattern Book by Marguerite Porter Davison The first version of Davison's four-harness pattern directory was published in 1944, and weavers have been hunting for used copies since it went out of print decades later. A group of weavers has been quietly working on a major new edition, with new samples woven in color and contemporary drafts, which Schiffer Publishing will release in 2027! Handwoven and Yarn Barn of Kansas join the crowd of weavers eager to add the new book to our shelves. A Weaver's Book of 8-Shaft Patterns from the Friends of Handwoven, edited by Carol Strickler Organized by structure and endlessly browsable, this is the book 8-shaft weavers keep within reach when dreaming up a new project. Rigid-Heddle Weavers Ashford Book of Rigid Heddle Weaving by Rowena Hart A thorough guide to the fundamentals, this is unbeatable for its step-by-step warping and threading photography. Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom by Syne Mitchell This creative and ambitious book shows you ways of weaving that you never thought possible on a rigid-heddle loom. The useful "tech support" section offers troubleshooting suggestions for common mistakes. Knitters Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book Clear, well organized, and full of photos and illustrations, this book has taken more knitters from scarves to sweaters than any other, with basics on everything from individual stitches to garment design. Principles of Knitting by June Hemmons Hiatt For the knitter who wants to understand the mechanics behind every technique, this reference book dives deeply into the hows and whys of every knitting topic. Crocheters How to Crochet by Sara Delaney Small, affordable, and exactly right for getting started. The Crocheter's Skill-Building Workshop by Dora Ohrenstein Once you're past the basic stitches, this book teaches you construction, shaping, texture, and other intermediate and advanced topics. Spinners The Spinner's Book of Yarn Designs by Sarah Anderson Friendly, comprehensive instructions for yarns from simple plied yarns to complex layers of twist and grist. Don't be fooled by the textured yarns on the cover—this is not just for art-yarn spinners; Anderson's studies on durability and suggestions for use make this a must-have for any spinner. The Fleece & Fiber Sourcebook by Deborah Robson and Carol Ekarius The Field Guide to Fleece by Deborah Robson and Carol Ekarius Not just for spinners, these fiber resources—the one always on your bookshelf and the smaller version you take to a festival—include details about the sources, traits, and uses of more animal fibers than you ever knew existed. Listen to our chat and tell us: Do you agree? What craft books make your must-have list? This episode is sponsored by: Learning how to weave but need the right shuttle? Hooked on knitting and in search of a lofty yarn? Yarn Barn of Kansas has been your partner in fiber since 1971. 1. Scope of Fraud The testimony describes large‑scale, systemic fraud within Minnesota’s Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP). Individual childcare centers allegedly billed hundreds of thousands to over $1 million annually, often with no real children present. 2. Organized and Long‑Running Scheme Fraud was not isolated or accidental; it showed characteristics of a loosely organized criminal enterprise operating for years (at least 2014–2019). Some perpetrators reportedly learned about the scheme before arriving in the U.S., indicating cross‑border knowledge of vulnerabilities in the system. 3. Common Fraud Methods Billing for nonexistent children and extended hours (e.g., multiple shifts, 7 days a week). Operating “paper” childcare centers that closed immediately once payments were stopped. Kickback arrangements involving parents, co‑owners, or employees. Reusing addresses and reopening under new business names after enforcement actions. 4. Evidence Gathered by Investigators Physical surveillance showed centers operating without children or staff. Electronic evidence (texts, phones, computers) revealed admissions of fraud and intent to profit. Investigations led to multiple felony convictions, including at least one federal case with prison time and restitution exceeding $1 million. 5. Overwhelming Volume of Fraud Investigators received so many credible tips that they had to prioritize only the highest‑dollar cases. Centers billing less than ~$700,000 often could not be addressed due to limited resources. 6. Internal Resistance and Obstruction According to the whistleblower, senior DHS officials discouraged, undermined, or obstructed investigations once fraud became large and visible. Actions alleged include: Attempts to alter or suppress information sent to the Legislative Auditor Harassment and intimidation of investigators Organizational changes that reduced investigators’ authority Procedural delays that significantly reduced investigative capacity 7. Retaliation Against Whistleblowers Investigators who pushed fraud cases reportedly faced: Threats and bullying Negative performance actions Loss of decision‑making power The whistleblower ultimately resigned, stating he would not be complicit. 8. Failure of Oversight The testimony suggests institutional tolerance of fraud, contrasting sharply with standards enforced in law enforcement agencies. The whistleblower emphasizes that minor theft would not have been tolerated in his prior roles, while millions in losses were allowed to continue at DHS. 9. Federal Intervention Federal agencies (FBI, IRS‑CI, HHS‑OIG) eventually became involved due to the scale and nature of suspected crimes. Raids, indictments, and convictions occurred after years of state‑level warnings. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. In this episode of the Women in Wool series, I visited Laxtons Yarns in Baildon, Yorkshire, a fourth generation family spinning mill that is now employee-owned.I was given a full tour of the mill floor by commercial director Carly Smith and national accounts manager Rochelle Tracey, before sitting down with them to talk about British wool, the future of the business and the exciting relaunch of their hand knitting range.Laxtons spin worsted and fancy yarns for hand knitting, machine knitting and weaving. Their Sheepsoft yarn is a blend of Blue Faced Leicester and Masham British wool and travels less than 50 miles from fleece to finished yarn.Almost the entire workforce is women. In this episode we cover:Behind the scenes of how the fibre is spun into yarn. How Laxtons became employee owned in 2024 and what that means for the future of the business in Yorkshire. Why 52% of everything Laxtons spins is now British wool, and how that has grown. The relaunch of their hand knitting range as Bramble & Fleece. The shift happening across Yorkshire mills, with more women now leading businesses in what has traditionally been a male dominated industry.About LaxtonsLaxtons Yarns is a fourth generation family spinning mill based in Baildon, Yorkshire. When God gives us clear instructions, how should we respond? This week, we continue our series on Judges with a look at how God called Gideon. God provided him with everything he needed in order to obey, but Gideon kept asking for evidence his eyes could see. Pastor Connor encourages us to respond differently. We shouldn't wait to obey until we feel “ready,” we must tear down any false idols in our lives, and we ought to desire discernment, not delay. This week, our hosts continue their discussion on the book of Judges, some of the talking points were, the other names Gideon used for God, the angel of the Lord, and if it's wise to test God like Gideon did. It is the question everyone is asking: Is it finally going to snow in the Carolinas? On this week's edition of the Carolina Weather Group, James Brierson and Meteorologist Frank Strait break down the complicated signal for potential winter weather this weekend. We start with the bitter cold arriving Thursday and Friday, bringing dangerous wind chills and school delays to Western North Carolina. Then, we dive deep into the computer models to see if a developing system on Sunday will bring snow to the Piedmont or just cold rain. Frank explains why the GFS is bullish on snow while the European and Canadian models disagree, and teaches us how to use "ensembles" to cut through social media hype.Plus, we cover breaking space news regarding the first-ever medical evacuation from the International Space Station and track the Buddhist monks' "Walk for Peace" moving through Charlotte.Support the Show: Get your Carolina Weather Group Beanie or Fleece to stay warm during this cold snap! https://carolinaweathergroup.qbstores.com/#weather #northcarolina #southcarolina #ncwx #scwx #podcast

Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2, episode 6 discussion (00:14:52) Let's kick off the episode 6 discussion with Tyson in the water. Daniel Diemer does such a good job of getting Tyson's thoughts and feelings across while underwater. RAINBOW TO THE RESCUE. Percy has a pretty awful dream about Camp. It looks like Kronos is dropping by, but when the hood is pulled back it's someone else. Why do you think they showed Thalia in this scene? How does Percy know what she looks like? Percy wants to get a head start on their plan, but Annabeth remains calm and tells him that's not a good idea. Back on the island, Polyphemus regales Clarisse and Grover with tales of his solitary life. Shoutout to Nobody. They made Polyphemus SO MUCH SCARIER than he was in the books. We keep hearing Pan's name. Percy keeps watch while Annabeth grabs some pelts. Luke interrupts with some rainbow wiggles. Annabeth admits Luke might be right about Thalia's feelings about Zeus, but he was also wrong to think she'd be on Kronos' side. This part wasn't in the book, but it's such a great addition. Percy has a dramatic entrance. Was he worried that Annabeth might be betraying him? Was the call about recon or about checking in on Annabeth? “Think wooly thoughts.” Those sheep sounds were pretty legit. Plot twist! Polyphemus set a trap for the demigods. We get a classic Clarisse and Percy moment. Annabeth uses that big brain of hers to distract Polyphemus. Luke uses a portal to travel to the island, and Karen has some questions about the science of the magic. Shoutout to the makeup department because Annabeth's wounds looked BRUTAL. All seems lost…until Tyson returns! Did Percy understand what they said in Ancient Greek? How did Tyson get one up on Polyphemus? Luke arrives at the worst or possibly even the best time. Percy really did try to come up with a different solution than just handing over the fleece. Were we surprised Luke healed Annabeth? How do we feel about the changes from the book here? Tyson saves the day AGAIN, and Percy is so glad he's alive. And like the wish-granting fairy that he is, Tyson has a solution to their problem of no transportation. Percy gets yet another epic line to end the episode. Next time: Young Annabeth, a recovering sarcophagus, Clarisse liking her odds, and BLACKJACK!! Percy Jackson and the Olympians Official Podcast highlights (01:25:15) Aryan and Aleks are in divorce arbitration, and Andrew makes his big debut on the podcast. But first we need to talk about what is was like to play Polyphemus. This is not the first time Aleks has been a cyclops in a Percy Jackson production. Did you realize they did mostly practical effects for Polyphemus? What character inspired the “simple” version of Polyphemus? Did you know what forced perspective was? Which did you like better, the proposal or the prom pictures? The second guest on the podcast was Albert Kim, one of the series' writers. They wanted to surprise even the most diehard fans of the books. We talk about Percy's fatal flaw, and his reaction to giving up the fleece. It's no surprise the sheep were afraid of Polyphemus. Aryan finally gets his ring! Andrew McIlroy returns to talk about his experience on the show so far. It was interesting hearing how they “found” Tyson and Teen!Luke. Kronos is totally a cult leader. We get some insight into how the kids prepare for each scene, including an example of the exercise with the ball that they do to get into character. Why doesn't Andrew go to any of the functions? Where did his commitment to the craft come from? Everyone has such respect for Glynn Turman. The gang is all here on Polyphemus's island (and it's not a tropical, relaxing island vacation). This week, we're discussing Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 6 of Season 2, "Nobody Gets The Fleece." Percy's fatal flaw is out and about this episode, and we aren't complaining. We say the word "interesting" like 37 times and work on our pronunciation of Thalia. Percy and Annabeth's plan to save Grover and Clarisse doesn't go super well. Tyson reappears and steals all our hearts. Have you ever found yourself laying out a fleece like Gideon, hoping God will make the way clear? Brian Delamont returns to the podcast for a thoughtful conversation about how God speaks to us and how we can posture ourselves to listen. Judges 6 "The problem isn't with God, it's that we're not listening to what He has already told us, and we're asking Him the wrong questions because of that." Psalm 89:46-51 Prayer by Tim Keller Isaiah 30:21 "I think everyone longs for this – for God to just tell us." "My heart has to want to listen to God. There is a waiting posture. And then, my heart also has to have the courage to respond to what I hear, even if what I hear is not what I wanted to hear." Divine Direction by Craig Groeschel Luke 22:42 "One of the most powerful ways that God speaks to us is when we listen together." Acts 13:1-3 "Sometimes there are seasons where He is silent." "The challenge is not that we miss His direction or miss His voice or miss His guidance, but oftentimes the challenge is that I'm not ready for what He wants to say to me as the answer or as the challenge to that prayer or question." "God loves us too much to leave us the way that we are right now. He wants to change us to be more and more like Him." Psalm 23 "The desert has a purpose." "When I come to God, I come to the One who knows me better than anybody else." December Reflection: What am I genuinely anticipating when I engage in conversation with God? In this episode of The First Day from The Fund Raising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., sits down with Nicholas Kristock, Executive Director of Fleece & Thank You, to talk about how storytelling isn't just an art, it's a survival skill for nonprofits in the age of distraction. Nicholas shares how his blanket-making nonprofit went from a heartfelt request by his twin sister into a statewide movement that delivers 30,000 personalized blankets each year to pediatric patients in Michigan. But these aren't your grandma's quilts; each one includes a video message from the blanket maker to the child, creating a full-circle moment of warmth, gratitude, and healing. Nicholas dives deep into the neuroscience of donor engagement and explains why breaking the script is essential if you want your message to actually make it past someone's mental gatekeeper. Forget “Your donation helped buy 2,847 books,” we're talking vivid, goosebump-inducing stories like a child giggling through Charlotte's Web for the very first time. The key, he says, is connecting the gift not just to impact, but to outcomes. It's not just about giving Miguel spaghetti, it's about how that meal helped his mother overcome her pride and feed her family. Now that's how you make a donor feel like a superhero. At Fleece & Thank You, personalization is baked into the DNA, not just for recipients, but for donors too. With only four full-time staff, they've built a tech-savvy storytelling engine that responds to donor behavior with laser precision. Whether through text, email, or an old-fashioned phone call, Nicholas emphasizes knocking on every door until you find the one your donor opens. Enter: the “Donor SWAT Outreach Team,” a genius low-cost, high-impact engagement strategy that enlists board members and volunteers to deliver heartfelt thank-you calls and share fresh weekly stories. It's board engagement, donor retention, and warm fuzzies, all rolled into one. So what's the result of this storytelling symphony? Fleece & Thank You has more than tripled its revenue since 2020 without significantly expanding its staff. The secret sauce: a donor journey mapped like a Plinko board, where every click, gift, and volunteer hour triggers a personalized path. Nicholas leaves us with two takeaways: build your donor SWAT team and dig deep for your true outcomes. Because sometimes, it's not just about a blanket, it's about giving hope to a child on the starting line of a race they never signed up for. And that, friends, is a story worth telling.

Listen to this episode and you will never look at handspun yarn in quite the same way. A bold claim, we know, but that's just one of the many things that Natasha Darius taught us in this interview. We met Natasha at Woolworks, Ltd., in Putnam, Connecticut, where she manages the volunteer-run store, teaches spinning, knits and does 10,000 other things. Growing up Haitian in Scotland, Connecticut, she did not come from a knitting family, but being a self-described old soul with an insatiable curiosity to “know all the things,” she was fascinated by the Afghans made by her friends' mothers and grandmothers. So she went to the local library (imagine!) and checked out every book on the fiber arts. Thus began her odyssey that would lead to learning to knit and then spin at Yarns with a Twist, a local yarn store in Chaplin, CT. Eventually, she would join “Fleece to Shawl” competitions at local fairs and help others with their knitting projects at Woolworks. But it was her philosophy of spinning that most captivated us, as she explained that every fiber has a personality, an idea of what it wants to be, and each of her 28 spinning wheels has a personality and a story waiting to unfold too. Mix in Natasha's own personality, and, well, that's a lot of personality spinning around: "If you are going to pick up spinning, you have to realize that there are moments where your will will not be done. If you want to enjoy the process sometimes you just have to listen to the fiber and let the fiber tell you what it wants to be . . . you can't control everything. You are not meant to control everything. You do not get the final say of what is a good instinct. You are not the final decision maker on what's considered beautiful or perfect. Let it do what it wants to do."We can see that philosophy at work in how she approaches teaching spinning too, as she explained that every student has their own language for learning. The teacher's job is to figure out what that language is by listening and observing. Her favorite part of teaching? Seeing the flicker of understanding that happens right behind her students' eyes when they get it and all the complexity of spinning falls into place for them.Perhaps most of all, spinning brings Natasha joy—the joy of interacting with the unique personality of each fiber and spinning wheel, and the pride and satisfaction that comes from making something from start to finish: “If you can spin it, you can make something beautiful out of anything . . . I surprise myself all the time.” And then there's the joy of sharing it with the magical community at Woolworks. As we enter the holiday season, we think sharing Natasha's story about the joys of learning, making and teaching “all the things” with her local community is what we all need.
