The Food and Fibre sector claims the education system is letting it down. Leaders from farming, forestry, horticulture, and seafood have joined forces to launch a Food and Fibre Workforce Capability Strategy. They're pushing for tertiary education reform —with an employer-led, work-based learning model— to match real industry demands. Horticulture NZ Chief Executive Kate Scott told Mike Hosking the current model isn't working. She says it tends to favour the volume of learners rather than the value. A push for more work-based learning, to give food and fibre employers greater input on training. Key players like Beef + Lamb New Zealand and Federated Farmers have teamed up to demand an overhaul from the government. The sectors have released the Food and Fibre Workforce Capability Strategy. Forestry Owners' Association Chief Executive Elizabeth Heeg told Francesca Rudkin the strategy sets out a pathway to train the next generation of skilled workers. She says they want to work with the government to ensure the system prioritises capabilities and not just credentials. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode of Heal Yourself with Sarah Dawkins, Jonathan shares his story as a powerful testament to the body's ability to heal itself when given the right nutrition. He recounts a lifetime of struggling with both physical and mental ailments, including hallucinations, sleep paralysis and Raynaud's disease. He tried many conventional approaches, but none offered a lasting solution. It wasn't until he intuitively began eliminating fruits and vegetables and focusing on animal-based foods, without even knowing what a carnivore diet was, that he started to see a dramatic turnaround.Jonathan's journey is particularly resonant with young people who are silently struggling with similar conditions. He emphasizes the importance of going back to a more natural way of living and listening to the body's signals. He also highlights the contrast between his experience and the common advice of using medications to mask symptoms, noting how a simple blood test showed his perfect health after adopting his new diet, much to his doctor's surprise. This episode isn't just about a diet; it's about a holistic approach to health and a return to foundational principles. Jonathan's story challenges the modern dietary narrative and offers hope to those who feel they've exhausted all options. His passion is to spread this message, particularly to a younger generation misguided by trends and quick fixes.Time stamps 00:00 Introduction 07:03 The standard low-fat diet, how it initially improved his health but ultimately made his symptoms worse, leading him to his lowest point.09:07 Discover the wide range of physical and mental health struggles; depression, anxiety, IBS, Raynaud's disease, hallucinations and sleep paralysis.14:12 Rock bottom with a severe IBS attack was the catalyst that drove him to take radical action. 29:03 Perfect blood test results on a carnivore diet but the doctor's skeptical and ultimately dismissive, reaction.37:17 Fibre-free diet helped alleviate constipation and other gut issues, challenging the common belief that fibre is essential for health.42:07 A tip for those struggling with their health is to eliminate processed foods and focus on eating simple, single-ingredient foods.Jonathan's BioJonathan is a 24-year-old Norwegian who struggled with a long list of health issues, including IBS, anxiety, weight issues, addictions, hallucinations, sleep paralysis, Raynaud's and depression. In 2023 Jonathan hit rock bottom. After a major IBS attack, he started experimenting with food and eventually found his way to the carnivore lifestyle without even knowing it existed. SIRO, the wholesale broadband network operator delivering 100% fibre-to-the-building broadband across Ireland, has announced that its network is now live in Tipperary Town. To date, 1,432 homes and businesses in the town have access to the SIRO network, with a further 580 premises expected to go live in 2026. SIRO's rollout in Tipperary Town was delivered in two phases, with approximately 330 premises passed in June and a further 1,102 premises passed in August. The third phase of the rollout will be completed in Q1 2026 with 580 more premises joining the SIRO network. Areas of the town now passed by the SIRO network include Springfield Grove, Saint Michael's Avenue, Rosanna Close, Springfield Crescent, Lacey Villas, Davitt Street, An Dúiche, O'Connell Road, Saint Patrick's Avenue, and Blackthorn Grove. With this latest rollout, SIRO has now passed more than 19,000 premises across County Tipperary. The company's fibre broadband network is already live in towns such as Cashel, Clonmel, Nenagh, Roscrea, Thurles and Tipperary, bringing reliable gigabit connectivity to homes and businesses throughout the county. Earlier this month, SIRO and Vodafone also announced their role as connectivity partners for Roscrea's new REACH Digital Enterprise Hub, which officially opened at the start of September. As the 25th hub to join the SIRO-Vodafone Gigabit Hub Initiative, REACH is supporting growth opportunities for local businesses in Tipperary. The expansion comes at a crucial time, as Ireland prepares for the national copper switch-off, which will see the outdated copper broadband network switched off over the years ahead. SIRO's 100% fibre broadband provides a future-proofed solution, ensuring reliable connectivity for households and businesses ensuring they have high quality connectivity required for decades to come. SIRO's full fibre broadband offers speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second, allowing households and businesses to enjoy seamless online experiences. Customers in Tipperary Town can now order services from SIRO's retail partners, with more premises to follow in 2026. Speaking on the announcement, John Keaney, SIRO Chief Executive Officer, said: "We are delighted to bring SIRO's 100% fibre broadband to Tipperary Town, enabling more than 2,000 premises to access reliable gigabit connectivity. For businesses, world-class broadband is critical, supporting growth, digitalisation, and competitiveness. For households, it underpins everything from remote working and online learning to streaming and gaming. With copper switch-off now on the horizon, SIRO's full fibre network ensures that Tipperary Town is ready for the future."
In this episode of the Food Talk Show, host Ollie Lloyd talks to Clara Latham about creating category-smashing start-ups and her new venture, Deeply. Clara Latham has built her career in some quite radical startups, including Bounce protein balls and Seedlip non-alcoholic spirits. Today, she is focused on what she sees as the most significant consumer health gap: fibre. Like protein 15–20 years ago, fibre is a fundamental but neglected macronutrient: over 90% of people don't hit the ~30g daily target, and one in three struggle with gut issues at any given time. Clara argues that fixing fibre intake is a problem worth addressing. She argues that boosting the intake of prebiotic fibres will ultimately support digestion, immunity, mood, energy, and long-term disease risk. Deeply is her answer: a simple, delicious, routine-friendly way to “close the fibre gap.” The product is a ready-to-drink, smoothie-like prebiotic fibre shot made from whole fruits and vegetables (no concentrates, preservatives or added junk) delivering 7.5g fibre per serving—about 25% of a day's need. It comes in approachable flavours (e.g., carrot-ginger-turmeric; kiwi-spinach-seaweed) as single grab-and-go shots for retail and a seven-measure aluminium bottle for subscriptions. The big idea is changing habits: the bottle is designed to live in the fridge door, so you take your dose at the start of the day. If a health product isn't effortless and enjoyable, people won't take it daily. Deeply is built to be both. Strategically, Clara applies the “halo, then scale” playbook she honed at Seedlip. In early years, you win with narrow-and-deep distribution and high-influence advocates (e.g., Whole Foods, members' clubs, premium cafés, best-in-class retailers) to build credibility, trial, and education. Clara believes that expanding too soon leads to low awareness, a poor rate of sales, and delistings that are hard to reverse. Category creation requires patience, education, and roots before shoots—think bamboo that grows underground for years, then suddenly rises. Looking forward, Clara expects “fibre-called-out” claims to proliferate across foods, just as protein did. But this isn't perceived to be a problem as Deeply is clear on what it can offer. A simple way to hit your fibre goal and that is a win, because when fibre goes up, the gut thrives, and when the gut thrives, everything else tends to follow.
In this week's Talking Health, Etholle is joined by Gastroenterologist, Dr Alan Desmond, to discuss the nation's gut health. Are you really getting enough fibre?

Speed Fibre Group CEO Peter McCarthy talked with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's acquisition of BT Communications Ireland and what it means for its position in the market. McCarthy explained that BT Ireland had been split into three parts, with Speed Fibre acquiring BT Communications Ireland Limited. This included national ducts, fibre assets, wholesale customers, and staff. He highlighted that “we have acquired the original company, BT Communications Ireland Limited, which has all of their wholesale assets,” noting that this added around 350 to 400 enterprise customers and 270 employees to the group. The deal establishes Speed Fibre as the number two wholesale operator in Ireland outside of last-mile access connections. The group now serves about 105 to 110 wholesale customers, including major international telecoms such as Vodafone, Verizon, and AT&T. Its infrastructure footprint totals 10,000km of fiber and duct, with 6,000 connected premises and more than 100 co-location facilities. McCarthy said the acquisition aligns with Cordiant Digital Infrastructure Ltd (LSE:CORD)'s “buy, build, and grow” strategy, providing opportunities for network expansion and synergies across the combined businesses. He also emphasised continuity of service, saying that Speed Fibre is “absolutely focused on customer service and being out there with the customer and partnering with them.” For more interviews like this, visit Proactive's YouTube channel. Speed Fibre Group, Ireland's leading telecoms infrastructure provider and the parent company of Enet and Magnet+, has announced the completion of its acquisition of BT Communications Ireland Limited (BTCIL), a business unit of BT and a leading provider of wholesale and enterprise connectivity solutions in Ireland. Integration of the two businesses begins today. The acquisition includes BTCIL's domestic network infrastructure, co-location facilities, wholesale and enterprise customer base, and the internal teams supporting them. These operations will now be integrated into Speed Fibre Group's two brands: Enet, serving wholesale customers, and Magnet+, serving enterprise businesses. By uniting two complementary businesses, Speed Fibre Group is creating one platform with greater scale, deeper reach, and enhanced capability delivering increased choice, better value, and more innovation to customers nationwide. This platform will support the data centre sector, next generation computing and AI requirements. Following the transaction, Speed Fibre Group's network now extends to nearly 10,000 km of fibre, connecting 94 towns and cities, and over 6,000 buildings including more than 2,500 in Dublin and key urban centres. This strengthened footprint positions Enet as Ireland's second-largest wholesale telecoms operator, enabling faster service delivery and providing real competition in the marketplace. The transaction also includes a long-term agreement for BT and Speed Fibre Group to source connectivity from each other, ensuring continuity of service for both organisations and their customers. Peter McCarthy, CEO of Speed Fibre Group, said: "We are delighted to announce that BT Communications Ireland Limited is now officially part of Speed Fibre Group, marking an exciting transformational milestone for our business. Uniting BTCIL and Speed Fibre Group combines market heritage, knowledge and scale, and also restores badly needed competition in the telecommunications space at a national level. By bringing together two leaders in the market, we will unlock greater scale, deeper building connectivity, and the ability to offer customers nationwide increased choice, better value, expanded reach and service excellence. "Importantly, this acquisition also aligns with our long-term plans to future proof Ireland's telecommunications landscape and support Ireland's growing digital economy. Our next-generation infrastructure is designed to support high volume and decentralised data flows essential for sectors like AI, pharma, and cloud services who require fast, reliable, and scalable connectivity." We will continue to focus on delivering robust and innovative connectivity solutions for businesses and communities across the country to meet Ireland's growing digital demands." Speed Fibre Group is owned by Cordiant Digital Infrastructure Limited, a specialist global infrastructure investor with a focus on digital infrastructure. Steven Marshall, Chairman of Cordiant Digital Infrastructure Limited, said: "This acquisition is a fantastic synergy between two of the top three market players in Ireland. It will make Speed Fibre Group more efficient, more competitive and in a better position to roll out even more innovative and better value solutions for customers. "With a proven management team in place, this is a transformational transaction for the Irish telecoms market. We're very much looking forward to working with Speed Fibre Group to continue this investment trajectory so we can support customers, grow the digital industries in Ireland, and, by extension, support GDP and economic growth in Ireland." National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that over 400,000 homes, farms and businesses in the State's Intervention Area can now connect to high-speed broadband.?This follows a decision earlier this year to accelerate delivery to an additional 65,000 homes, farms and businesses, bringing forward access to high-speed broadband for communities across rural Ireland. NBI has achieved the milestone ahead of schedule, meaning the company is now on course to surpass its 2025 target of 420,000 premises passed. When a premises is passed, an order can be placed to connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI Network. People living and working in rural Ireland can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to see if their home or business is included in the rollout and how to get connected. With more than 50 broadband providers actively selling on NBI's open-access network, rural communities now have access to the same level of competition and choice as those in urban areas. Customers can select from a wide range of internet providers, with competitive pricing and bundled packages available nationwide. The rollout is already delivering meaningful impact with over 140,000 premises already connected. Take-up rates average 35% and continue to climb, approaching 60% in areas where the network has been live the longest, such as the rural areas near Athlone, Castlebar and Emyvale. Fibre broadband is also available to order on 19 islands, including Achill Islan,d where the first homes and businesses began connecting in June. Independent research continues to highlight the real-world impact of the National Broadband Plan such as improved quality of life and better access to essential services as well as stronger digital capacity for rural businesses. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D. said: "The advent of rural broadband has been truly transformative, not only bridging the digital divide, but also breathing new life into once isolated communities. Even the most remote parts of our country now have the opportunity to sustain local businesses, educate their children, and preserve a way of life in a modern, connected world." "National Broadband Ireland is playing an instrumental role in delivering one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the history of the State. Great credit is due to NBI, its leadership, contractors, and the men and women on the ground who are making this happen. They are ensuring that every home, farm and business, no matter how remote, has access to the kind of connectivity that levels the playing field and unlocks opportunity for all." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "Passing 400,000 premises marks another major step forward in the delivery of the National Broadband Plan. Every week, thousands more premises are being made ready for service, and the level of interest and demand we're seeing is remarkable. As the rollout progresses, the full potential of a connected rural Ireland is becoming increasingly clear. "This progress reflects the tireless work of our build partners, engineering teams and broadband providers across the country. It also wouldn't be possible without the support and leadership of the Government, which has made a long-term commitment to connecting every part of Ireland and ensuring no one is left behind in the digital age." There are currently 564,000 premises included in the NBP Intervention Area, up from 537,000 premises at the time of contract award. Progress update as of 20.08.2025: The number of premises passed, and which can connect to NBI's fibre network, is 400,147. 140,592 premises are already connected. The average take-rate is 35%. Take-up is approaching 60% where services have been available for longer. 100% of surveying works are complete, and all remaining premises are now in the construction phase. 95...

Did environmental campaigners really contribute to a decline in cotton's global share of fibre production? Well, according to a rather punchy opinion piece in Cotton Grower a couple of months ago, the answer is a resounding, yes. The article claims that environmentalists have been intellectually dishonest and fed a binary narrative of cotton bad, synthetic fibers good….which created pressure from watchdogs and investor ESG mandates…which then led to brands moving away from conventional cotton to synthetics…and as a result we are now awash with cheap synthetics clothing. Now, this is a lot to leave at the door of environmentalists, and this polemic seemed a bit lop-sided, so to balance things out we thought it would be good to talk to Ecotextile News' dedicated Cotton Correspondent Simon Ferrigno, who has also done his fair share of environmental campaigner over the years. Do people like Simon have a case to answer for? In the podcast, we also turn the article's claim on its head - and ask whether the cotton industry should pay more attention to the many environmentalists' trying to make cotton production more sustainable and efficient. The benefits of fibre have been up for debate for a number years now because some people feel much worse and others feel much better when they eat it. This puts some tension between the plant and animal based communities, so I thought we'd settle it here and now. So the question we need to ask isn't “is fibre good?”; but instead we should be asking “is fibre good for YOU right now. And "why or why not?” TOPICS DISCUSSED: Is fibre an essential nutrient? what does fibre do in your gut? why would fibre make your gut better or worse? how much should you eat and how do you introduce it properly? do you need fibre to poop? who should or should not be eating fibre, and why? Fibre broadband network operator, SIRO, and Kerry and Munster broadband retailer, Ivertec, have announced the rollout of a 10 Gigabit broadband service in Killarney. SIRO's first 10 Gigabit connection in the region. The service is designed to enhance Ivertec's existing fibre broadband offering to its significant business customer base. The 10 Gigabit service allows Ivertec to offer Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) services and improved capacity to local businesses, particularly those in the hospitality and retail sectors, where the need for fast and reliable connectivity is essential. Critically, the circuit also serves as a resilient backup route for Ivertec's national network. This means that if an issue occurs on the network, there is a backup connection in place to ensure that end-user businesses do not experience disruption. The foundation underpinning Ivertec's expanded offering to Kerry and Munster businesses is SIRO's 100% fibre network, delivering symmetrical speeds. The latter means that businesses can enjoy the same level of upload and download speeds, which can be essential for business-critical operations such as video conferencing or uploading data to the Cloud. 10 Gigabit fibre broadband will not only allow Ivertec to meet the needs of its customers today but will also ensure that they can seamlessly continue to provide greater bandwidth and speeds to local businesses, as the latter's data demands grow into the future. Aoife O'Reilly, SIRO's Head of Enterprise, commented: SIRO is pleased to partner with Ivertec on 10 Gigabit fibre broadband for its Kerry and Munster customers. The partnership supports growing demand from businesses for dependable, high-speed and future-proofed connectivity. It reflects our shared focus on strengthening digital infrastructure in regional areas." Gerard O'Sullivan, Ivertec CEO, said: "We're delighted to enhance fibre connectivity in Killarney with the launch of a new 10Gb circuit from SIRO. This circuit provides a fully diverse fibre path into our network in the region, complementing our existing backhaul connection between Kerry and Dublin. In the event of any disruption to our primary fibre route, the SIRO circuit ensures uninterrupted service for our customers in the area. This additional layer of resilience is vital for delivering high-availability internet and VoIP services - particularly for the many local businesses that depend on Ivertec for reliable connectivity every day." National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has today (Wednesday) hosted an event on Achill Island to mark the first connections to high-speed fibre broadband on the remote island Main build works on the island infrastructure are now complete enabling over 2,500 homes, farms and businesses to high-speed broadband. This means that residents of Ireland's largest island will have the same access to 2 Gig, reliable, broadband as any of the over 380,000 premises that NBI has already passed across the country. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., was present at the event which included local public representatives, community groups and residents from the island. Minister O'Donovan said: "The National Broadband Plan is one of the largest State infrastructure projects since rural electrification, and ensures that no community, home or business is left behind from a connectivity point of view. This means that delivering broadband infrastructure to the residents of Achill Island is a natural extension of this mandate. "I'm delighted to be here today to witness first-hand the impact that this investment and connectivity to high-speed broadband is having for homes, businesses and the entire island community who will reap the benefits of it for decades to come." David McCourt, Founder and Chairman of National Broadband Ireland, commented: "At NBI, we are working to the mandate from Government to ensure that no town, village, or community will be left behind under the National Broadband Plan. No premises is too rural or too remote and we're proud to be here on Achill Island - one of 27 offshore islands in our rollout - to mark the availability of our world-class fibre network." TJ Malone, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "The delivery of fibre broadband infrastructure to Achill Island is a significant milestone for NBI, and we are delighted to have end customers already connected and enjoying the benefits of reliable, high-speed broadband. This is a major step forward for digital connectivity, helping people stay connected, work remotely, stream seamlessly, and access vital online services. "Fibre broadband is the gold standard for fast, reliable internet - and thanks to the National Broadband Plan, many homes and businesses across Ireland can already make the switch today. By switching to fibre, users can leave behind the limitations of outdated copper networks, which were never designed to meet the demands of today's digital world." Local connected customer and owner of House of Achill, Anna Sutcliffe, said: "Since connecting to the NBI Network with Imagine, my business has really grown. Traditionally on the island, we are very dependent on the tourism season. Now with fibre, I finally have a fast, reliable connection to support online sales and ensure customer service year-round. I can now focus on what I enjoy most about the business: being creative." Glenda Brady, Commercial Director, Imagine, said:"At Imagine, our roots have always been in rural Ireland and in serving communities like Achill. This is a moment we're really proud of. Fibre connectivity will allow business owners, like Anna, succeed in a much bigger digitally connected market, no matter where they are based." Local connected customer and owner of Lilí Bán Café, John Barrett, said: "I opened Lilí Bán Café in the summer of 2021 and soon realised that running a business on Achill Island has its challenges. Without fibre broadband, the weather often impacted the signal and reliability of the connection. Since connecting to NBI's fibre with Westnet, it's been a real game changer. At the café, we can now manage online bookings and operate a card machine. It's exciting to see a new wave of business starting on the island and fibre connectivity has definitely played a big part in this." Paul Cunnane, Chief Executive Officer, Westnet, said: "Westnet has a long-standing...

It's the TFI Late Review on the show as a night-time recording has Elis at his energetic peak. He's ready to throw a chair at a wall and also discuss the latest avant-garde Spanish melodrama. It's a different vibe altogether, the boys don't even know what day it is. But in such a circular audio environment, what even are days?We speak to the chattiest man in Wales - a pillar of the world accent community no less - and there is a real fear that Elis could be stealing John's exercise thunder. Not what you want on a day where John's creaking limbs might as well be made of wood. It's also a show chock-full of 90s references with targeted history for the benefit of the under-35s.Remember, the Bureau de Change of the Mind is exclusively available on BBC Sounds on Saturday morning. And for those who don't revel in top class audio drama, this week it'll be led by emails.Get your Shames - we'd love some of those - as well as any other stuff in to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.
