In this week's episode Natalie is joined by registered Menopause Nutritionist & Author Emma Bardwell to talk all about her brand new book The 30g Plan and how our nutritional needs change as we head towards mid life. From slower digestion to decreasing muscle mass Emma unpacks the varying transitions our bodies face as we enter perimenopause and menopause and how our diet can have a significant impact on the intensity of symptoms. Emma details the need for more protein and fibre as we age and notes how her own experience with entering perimenopause and the concerns her patients expressed inspired her to create her brand new book The 30g Plan. Explaining that, in an age of misinformation and click bait she felt women entering midlife needed a resource that was scientifically backed whilst being easy to follow when it came to understanding their nutritional needs. During the conversation Emma also notes how our hormonal changes impact digestion and how it is vital that we pay attention to this often taboo area of our health in order to maintain optimum wellbeing as we begin to experience perimenopause, highlighting that many women can suffer with bloating and other uncomfortable symptoms that lead to lack of confidence and decreased vitality. In a highly informative part of the chat Emma gives her verdict on the use of supplements to boost overall wellness alongside helpful advice on getting the best nutrition on a budget. National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company responsible for delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that two-thirds of homes, farms and businesses in the rollout area can now connect to high-speed broadband. There are now 367,154 premises that have been passed with NBI fibre (out of the 564,000 currently included in the NBP Intervention Area). This follows a decision earlier this year to bring forward the connection timeline for 65,000 homes, farms and businesses, ensuring faster access to fibre broadband for thousands of families and communities across rural Ireland. When a premises is passed, an order can be placed to connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI Network. People living and working in rural Ireland can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to see if their home or business is included in the rollout and how to get connected. With more than 50 broadband providers actively selling on NBI's open-access network, rural communities now have access to the same level of competition and choice as those in urban areas. Customers can select from a wide range of internet providers, with competitive pricing and bundled packages available nationwide. The rollout is already delivering meaningful impact with 129,079 premises already connected. Take-up rates now average 35% and continue to climb, approaching 60% in areas where the network has been live the longest such as the rural areas near Athlone, Castlebar and Emyvale. Fibre broadband is also live on ten offshore islands, including Hare Island, Collanmore Island and Rutland Island, with build works significantly completed on others, including Achill Island, where people can now order connectivity on the NBI Network. Independent research has highlighted early social and economic benefits, such as improved quality of life, increased productivity for rural businesses, and enhanced access to services, showing the transformative potential of the NBP as it nears completion. Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan, T.D., said: "This is a major milestone for the National Broadband Plan and for rural Ireland. Two-thirds of homes, farms and businesses in the rollout area can now access world-class connectivity - a transformative step for communities, businesses and families across the country. Reliable high-speed broadband is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity, and I am proud of the Government's ongoing commitment to ensuring every home, no matter how remote, is given the opportunity to thrive in a connected world." Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "We are proud to have passed two-thirds of the premises in the State intervention area, bringing us significantly closer to our goal of delivering high-speed fibre broadband to every home, farm and business in the rollout area. The strong and growing take-up rate reflects the demand for reliable connectivity in rural Ireland and the trust people are placing in the NBI network. With over 50 retail providers offering services on our open-access network, end users have real choice and access to world-leading speeds." Progress update as of 23.05.2025: The number of premises passed, and which can connect to NBI's fibre network, is 367,154. 129,079 premises are already connected. The average take-rate is 35%. Take-up is approaching 60% where services have been available for longer. 95% of the project (537,286 premises) has moved to or through construction. 100% of premises have been surveyed. Take-up rates are approaching 60% in the Deployment Areas that were released first. 955 Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) have been installed and are live with 672 of these in schools. A high-speed broadband connection through NBI is available for order on 10 of the 27 islands included in the rollout. The remaining 17 islands are in various stages of survey and design works. It's the TFI Late Review on the show as a night-time recording has Elis at his energetic peak. He's ready to throw a chair at a wall and also discuss the latest avant-garde Spanish melodrama. It's a different vibe altogether, the boys don't even know what day it is. But in such a circular audio environment, what even are days?We speak to the chattiest man in Wales - a pillar of the world accent community no less - and there is a real fear that Elis could be stealing John's exercise thunder. Not what you want on a day where John's creaking limbs might as well be made of wood. It's also a show chock-full of 90s references with targeted history for the benefit of the under-35s.Remember, the Bureau de Change of the Mind is exclusively available on BBC Sounds on Saturday morning. And for those who don't revel in top class audio drama, this week it'll be led by emails.Get your Shames - we'd love some of those - as well as any other stuff in to elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, and 07974 293 022 on WhatsApp.

National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company delivering the Government's National Broadband Plan (NBP), has today announced that over 125,000 premises across Ireland are now connected to its high-speed fibre broadband network. There are now 361,101 homes, farms and businesses that have been passed with NBI fibre out of the 564,000 currently included in the NBP Intervention Area. People living and working in the rollout area can connect to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI Network through a choice of 50 different broadband providers actively selling on the network. Everyone can enter their Eircode on the NBI website, www.nbi.ie, to see if their home or business is included in the rollout, as well as seeing the broadband providers offering high-speed fibre connectivity in their area. As the rollout phase of NBI's network nears completion, take-up rates continue to grow. NBI has now completed the preliminary survey works required for the entire Intervention Area and the rollout is on track to pass over 420,000 premises by the end of this year. More than 125,000 premises have now connected to the NBI Network, with the average take-up rate of 35% well ahead of projections and international comparisons. The connection rate surpasses 50% in areas where the NBI Network has been live for longer. Minister for Arts, Culture, Communications, Media and Sport, Patrick O'Donovan TD, said: "This milestone underlines the Government's commitment to ensuring that every corner of the State has access to world-class digital infrastructure. With over 125,000 connections now live under the National Broadband Plan, we are seeing the benefits of this investment throughout rural Ireland. "Whether it's supporting remote working, helping local businesses expand, or giving students new ways to learn, high-speed broadband is transforming lives and unlocking new opportunities for communities across the country." David McCourt, Chairman, National Broadband Ireland said: "The National Broadband Plan is providing rural Ireland with the same access to digital opportunities as our cities. With 125,000 premises already connected to the NBI Network, this project is making a tangible difference to rural areas that have been anticipating reliable, high-speed connectivity. "In every decision that NBI has taken to deliver the Irish Government's National Broadband Plan, we've provided a blueprint for other nations to follow on their path to full fibre connectivity and that includes our unique approach to educating consumers and creating demand for services on our network." Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland, said: "This is a proud moment for NBI and communities across Ireland as 125,000 homes, farms and businesses are now connected to our world-class fibre broadband network. In this week's episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by her good friend Dr Rupy Aujla, a medical doctor, nutritionist, and founder of The Doctor's Kitchen for a deep dive into his new book, Healthy High Protein. Together, they explore how our relationship with food evolves over time, and why protein and fibre play a far more essential role in our health than many of us realise. Dr Rupy shares how inflammation acts like your body's ‘internal campfire', providing warmth and protection when in balance, but becoming harmful if it burns too intensely. Whilst working as a newly qualified junior doctor, Dr Rupy faced a life-changing health scare when he was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, a heart condition that prompted him to reassess his lifestyle and approach to nutrition. Although diet is not a standalone treatment, the conversation between the experts emphasises the meaningful role diet can play in supporting overall health and restoring balance. Additionally, Dr Rupy shares practical tips on becoming a “good guesstimator” of your protein needs at each meal, along with three simple questions to ask yourself daily to support overall wellbeing. Send us a textIn this special 99th episode of Disrupting Obesity, I'm taking a step back from our usual format to share a behind-the-scenes look at what really comes up inside the Flamingo Forum. From breakthrough coaching moments to key mindset shifts, we're diving deep into the real-world tools that help transform your relationship with food. This episode explores the difference between healthy and helpful, why calorie counting isn't the enemy, and how small, sustainable changes like understanding food "vehicles" and using safety nets instead of rigid rules, can create a lasting, realistic approach to weight loss without the overwhelm of restriction. Listen in to hear more on:• Why safety nets work better than rules when it comes to food habits.• The science of the “20-minute rule” and how it helped me let go of guilt.• How we've been taught to fear hunger, and why that messaging is broken.• The truth about emotional hunger and how to manage it.• How to mentally bounce back from a binge day with data, not shame.• The difference between “good” vs. “helpful” foods, and why moralizing food needs to stop.• Vehicle hacking: the art of saving hundreds of calories without sacrificing what you love.• Why slow, manageable changes can help you finally keep the weight off.Food isn't the enemy. Neither are you. If you've ever felt stuck between diet culture and emotional eating, this episode is your reminder that there is a way to build trust with your body again, and that starts by shifting the tools you use. As always: keep trying, keep tracking, don't be intimidated and don't give up. You've totally got this!Episode Mentioned:089 A Look InsideLooking for help on your weight loss journey? Elise Campbell is a multimedia artist based in Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia. Working primarily with wool, silk, and other natural fibres, she creates sculptural pieces that push traditional craft boundaries and the limits of wool as a medium by exploring human-nature relationships through textural forms, histories, and surface design. Utilising both contemporary techniques such as needle felting and nuno felting alongside the traditional craft of wet felting, she creates work that reflects narratives of ecological movement, weaving in themes of environmental stewardship. Inspired by both found specimens and botanical watercolour illustrations, Elise's body of work is growing from fungi and algae/kelp to include historical and currently relevant ecology specimens. Elise's dedication to elevating wool fibre to fine craft is evident in her commitment to innovation and collaboration. Her work has garnered recognition and support from prestigious institutions such as the Canada Council for the Arts, The Robert Pope Foundation, and the Denis Diderot Grant, and has been showcased in galleries across Nova Scotia, British Columbia, and Ontario. Through her creative endeavours, residencies, and an international felting study, Elise strives to both inspire and embrace innovation and collaboration, fostering a collective responsibility to protect and cherish our natural home, Earth. We talked about our first time meeting through an art jury, her love of felting and why she only recently started identifying as an artist. We also talk about a very raw and beautiful documentary that she starred in called Hold Fast | A Tattoo That Fits and Flows. In this award winning short film by tattoo artist, Chad Harrington Elise generously shares the journey to getting her first tattoo.

Chasing the ‘perfect’ diet is a trap; which is really great news for our brand. Simon Hill, nutritionist, physiotherapist, and host of The Proof podcast, joins us in the Academy of Imperfection to break down whether the latest dietary trends on social media actually match up with nutrition science. In this episode, Simon unpacks the role of both genetics and lifestyle choices in shaping our health, and specifically our risk of disease. Acknowledging the pressure, and sometimes shame, that comes with chasing the ‘perfect’ diet, Hugh, Ryan, and Josh discuss how to encourage kids to build positive relationships with food, and the incredible significance of ‘joy’ and ‘human connection’, that occurs when we get together to eat. And then, of course, we play Simon Says and bust some food-myths about supplements, plant protein, and whether breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Simon, thank you for all that you says.
