Mat 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. Mat 2:11-12 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

Jesus became a man to satisfy the prophets of the Old Testament, to show us the Father, to save us from our sins, to sympathize with our weaknesses and to secure our hope for heaven.

These days, we have an army of psychologists and therapists reminding people to self-advocate, to not allow themselves to become doormats (or become co-dependent), to stand up for themselves. And while there's truth to all of it, something profoundly POWERFUL happens when you stand up for someone else. In the midst of the pandemic and lockdowns, many pastors and churches are generating noise about THEIR rights to gather and worship. But what if they're missing it? What if they're missing an opportunity to BE the church?

Christmas may have passed, but Matthew's account of the Magi teach us far more than their ability to follow a star. It teaches us the core of what it means to faithfully follow Christ.

Three Cords in One Matthew 2:1-18 Keith Morrison
It was back to reality last Sunday, with Christmas over and a New Year begun. In his sermon, After Christmas, Pastor John highlighted the travels of the Magi to visit the Christ Child, and the escape to Egypt by Joseph and Mary to avoid the wrath of Herod.
The three Magi come to bring gifts to Jesus. Herod tries to find Him and kill Him.
Matthews account of the first advent includes the horrifying details of King Herod's massacre of the baby boys in and around Bethlehem. It is a fulfillment of prophecy. How are believers to handle difficult passages that reveal truths about God that we would rather not accept?

Oftentimes when it comes to Christmas and the Christmas story, we view it primarily through one side, which is the fact that Jesus is our Savior, but we need to align our vision to not only Jesus our Savior but also Jesus our King. He is Savior and He is King! Choose to surrender yourself to Him! Bow down to Him, worship Him, and present Him with the gift of yourself. Let's not just see Him as a Savior but embrace Him as King!
Are you aware that Christmas creates a great deal of dynamic tension? The extremes that you read in this text below (Matthew 2:1-18) still exist today. Some are “TROUBLED” by Jesus while others desire to “WORSHIP” Him. As you read this text --- notice that there are 3 prophecies. (Micah 5:2, Hosea 11:1, Jeremiah 31:15). Why is prophecy important? How do we resist the “World’s Spirit” at Christmas?

In this passage today, Matthew is presenting Jesus as the true Son of David, and the King of kings. He is worthy of our worship and service.

Hear the good news…Christ Has Come! The prophet Isaiah says it this way... The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (ESV) So what is this good news? Christ came TO US and FOR US! He came to rescue us from eternal darkness and deliver us into His glorious light! That is why we can sing "Joy to the World!” Merry Christmas!
We celebrate the birth of Christ. But too often our lives, much like our celebration, limits Jesus as that little child in the manger. Does the "newborn King" require much more?

All of us know what it's like to live under the rule (or thumb) somebody. And when that somebody is RUTHLESS or a jerk, life is simply miserable. Believe it or not, a big part of what the Gospel is all about is the arrival of God's RULE. In this message, Max Vanderpool ties one of the biggest themes of the Bible together with the Christmas narrative - and why it's worth it to worship and follow.

The same reactions people have to Jesus today are presented right here for us in Matthew 2. Anytime Jesus is the subject, we see those like Herod who are opposed, we see those who are indifferent, and we see those who have come to worship and to be changed forever.
