What does it mean to be baptized for the dead? Is this a practice Christians are supposed to do since Paul mentioned it?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through an odd verse in 1 Corinthians 15 that has become the foundation for some problematic doctrines. We look at what it means (and what it doesn't mean) to be baptized for the dead and try to come away with some applications for us today! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. In this Father's Day message, Pastor Derek Sissel shares how a father's godly influence helps train the next generation, build a lasting spiritual legacy, and speak blessing and identity into the lives of his children.
Pastor Derek explores the concepts of the Truth and the Lie according to the Bible. He explains how believing the Truth leads to life, while believing the Lie leads to destruction. He emphasises the importance of embracing God's truth and rejecting falsehoods, in our spiritual journey of faith. This is ideal for those seeking a deeper understanding of the foundations of the Christian faith. The TRUTH by its very nature is NARROW, whereas the LIE is BROAD. There is ONE TRUE GOD and one true faith, but there are many false gods, and many false religions. Therefore, you will only find the TRUTH, by having a heart commitment to seek and to know the TRUTH of God, and a refusal to take the easy way, and accept the convenient lies that make your life easier (Matthew 7:13-14). The truth is reality, the Lie is an illusion. The Truth of God: (1) God is the Creator. and sovereign over all. He defines our identity and purpose. (2) There is an absolute standard of right and wrong (the Moral Law, based on God's own nature), and we are accountable to God to keep His Law. (3) Thus there is such a thing as SIN and GUILT, when we break God's Moral Law. (4) We will be JUDGED by God for how we have lived. Atheists say that faith in God is an escape for people afraid of the dark, whereas the truth is that atheism is a fairy-tale escape for people who are afraid of the light. We must choose between the light (truth) and the darkness (lie), John 3:19-20. The Lie is the denial of the truth. If there is no God, there is no absolute right or wrong, so we are free to do whatever we want, which is attractive to many. The LIE says there is no ultimate reality beyond this evolving universe, which means we can define our own truth. This allows man to be his own god, with the right to decide in himself, what is right and wrong, and he is not accountable to any higher being. This means this universe came into being from nothing by accident, and evolved all by itself – irrational! The Lie is EVOLUTION. Believing the LIE puts you in the broad road to corruption & destruction (Romans 1:18-25). Satan is the father of the Lie (John 8:44, Isaiah 14:12-14, Ezekiel 28:13-18, Revelation 12:3-4, Genesis 3:1-4). Believing the Truth is necessary to be saved, for the Gospel of salvation through Christ only makes sense if you believe the truth of God, righteousness, sin & judgment. 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12: “They will PERISH, because they did not receive the LOVE of THE TRUTH, that they might be SAVED. And for this reason, God will send them strong DELUSION, that they should believe THE LIE, that they all may be CONDEMNED, who did not believe THE TRUTH, but had PLEASURE in unrighteousness.” When men reject the TRUTH, because they want to be free to enjoy a sinful lifestyle, they open their heart to embrace the LIE (the only alternative), the deception that there is no God, so they can be their own god, free to live as they please. This then becomes the basis for their final CONDEMNATION by God. So, an essential first step for people to be SAVED is that they must believe in the TRUTH of the CREATOR God.

God sends Moses on a mission and immediately threatens to kill him? Why does his wife then call him a "bridegroom of blood?"In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through an account in Exodus 4 where Zipporah has to circumcise her son to prevent Moses from being killed by God. This passage brings a lot of questions, and we seek to answer them! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. This is part 1 of a 4-part Series called: 'The Truth.' In this message, Pastor Derek discusses the different approaches needed to share the Gospel with various audiences, focusing on the Hebrew and Greek worldviews. For the Jews who'd already received the foundational biblical truths of God, Creation, Adam, the Fall (sin), and the Messianic Hope, the apostles focused on proving that Jesus is the promised Messiah, because He fulfilled all the Messianic Prophecies (Acts 2,3 and13). For those who do not have this foundation of Truth, as is the case for many people today, because of secular humanism, we have to build this foundation first before they can understand the Gospel. This is what Paul did in Acts 14 and 17. Derek demonstrates this by expounding Acts 14:8-17 and 17:16-21. As we share the TRUTH of God and the GOSPEL of Christ, we are SHINING His LIGHT on them, and if they desire to know God, they will SEEK Him, and the eyes of their heart will gradually open more and more to the light, and they will FIND Him, because He is not far from each one of us (Acts 17:27).

This week, Matt sits down with Pastor Derek to discuss the function of spiritual gifts. They also examine the suspension of Pastor Zachary Garris, exploring how presbyteries address disciplinary matters within their church polity. The conversation concludes with a practical discussion on relating to someone who is repeatedly disrespectful, including the important distinction between forgiveness and trust. One of David's men tries to stop the Ark of the Covenant from falling off a cart and God strikes him dead for it...seems harsh, right? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through an account in 1 Chronicles and 2 Samuel about a man named Uzzah who is struck dead for trying to prevent the Ark of the Covenant from falling off the cart pulled by oxen. We dig into the greater context around this story, as well as what the Ark represented and how it was supposed to be handled to bring clarity to this immediate punishment. Using Psalm 23, Pastor Derek looks at the Lord as our Great Shepherd who provides rest to His sheep—sheep who, whether they realize it or not, are desperate for the care and nurture of the Shepherd for every single facet of their existence. Key Truths from the Message: We are created for communion with God. Our souls were literally designed to be in relationship with Him. We default toward cheap substitutes. When we get tired, we tend to chase things that cannot actually satisfy us. Substitutes can never restore us. A substitute cannot restore you because it didn't create you in the first place. Jesus alone restores. As our Great Shepherd, He is the only one who can truly restore our souls. Rest is not inactivity. True rest is found directly in the living presence of Jesus. Looking further at Matthew 11:28-30 and Hebrews 4:9-11, we see that the Lord lovingly calls us to a place of continual rest in Him, regardless of what season we may currently be walking through—whether it is busy, stressful, chaotic, or peaceful.
There was a fight over the location of Moses' body...but why?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through an odd passage in the small book of Jude. Satan and the archangel Michael argue over the corpse of Moses, but there isn't much context around the significance of this or why it's included in Scripture. We look at some outside sources as well as some reasons as to why Satan may want the body of Moses and look at applications for Christians today around this passage! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. Don't boil a goat in its mother's milk...why is this even in the Bible?! Is there any application for us today? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through a few different passages in the Law that forbid the Israelites to boil a goat in the milk of its mother. We look through a few different principles and beliefs as to why this command was included three separate times in Scripture, narrowing down on one leading belief that is affirmed by the surrounding context of the passage. We then expound upon how the heart behind this command is still applicable for Christians today! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. This week Matt sits down with Pastor Derek, and they start by digging into how dangerous gossip is to the unity of the church — why it does so much damage and how easily it creeps in. They wrap up with a look at what spiritual gifts actually are, previewing the new sermon series. Pastor Derek continued sharing the vision of where God is taking us into the future. Specifically, he taught on how the Bible teaches us to view our money. Money doesn't truly give us satisfaction or security that it promises us. Jesus is after our hearts, not our money and stuff. We find our treasure by looking at where we spend our time and money. That's what we treasure and that's what we truly trust. Giving happens through the local church not to the local church.
In a world full of transactional relationships, what does true, redeeming love actually look like? In this episode, Pastor Derek Holmes delivers the third installment of our four-part series through the book of Ruth. Moving into one of the most pivotal moments of the story, we dive deep into the profound encounter between Ruth and Boaz at the threshing floor—a moment that is so much more than a ancient romance. Pastor Derek investigates how Boaz and Ruth’s unfolding love story serves as a breathtaking metaphorical depiction of the Gospel. Through Boaz’s fierce protection, intentional provision, and sacrificial love for Ruth, we get a tangible, beautiful picture of how Christ cares for us and desires to save and redeem us from our brokenness. But redemption isn't just about the Redeemer; it's also about our response. We look at Ruth’s bold, willing request to be taken under Boaz’s wing, uncovering what it teaches us about the posture of our own hearts. To experience the fullness of Christ’s saving grace, we must come to Him with that same willingness and vulnerability. Whether you feel hidden, broken, or undeserving of love, this episode is a powerful reminder that you have a Kinsman-Redeemer who has already declared His love for you. Key Takeaways From This Episode: - The Gospel in the Old Testament: How the historical accounts of Ruth and Boaz mirror Christ’s ultimate redemptive mission. - The Character of the Redeemer: Understanding Christ’s heart for you through Boaz’s protection and provision. - The Posture of Faith: What Ruth’s surrender teaches us about how we must approach Jesus for salvation.

Pastor Derek explores the 1st Ascension of Christ on the morning of His resurrection after appearing to Mary Magdalene (John 20:17). He ascended a 2nd time 40 days later, as described in Acts 1, after which He sat down at God's right hand. The 4 Purposes for His 1st Ascension: *1. To fulfil the Feast of First Fruits on the day of His resurrection (1Corinthians 15:20-23). *2. To present His BLOOD in the heavenly holy of holies, to establish the New Covenant (Hebrews 9:12). *3. To receive ALL AUTHORITY (Matthew 28:18, Daniel 7:13-14, Philippians 2:9-11): *4. To receive the SPIRIT on our behalf, to give to His people (Acts 2:33). That is why He could impart the Spirit to His apostles later on the same day He rose again (John 20:22).

Was there a point that abortions were a punishment for sin in the Bible? Were American evangelicals largely pro-choice in the 1950s and 60s? Why didn't Jesus speak directly about abortion? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around a few pro-choice arguments in Scripture and church history surrounding abortion. We look through some controversial Scriptures as well as some interesting church history to shed light on the biblical truth surrounding the topic of abortion. This week, Matt sits down with Pastor Derek to explore the question, “Did God really seek to kill Moses?” As they unpack this, they discuss the recurring theme of God's provision throughout Scripture and how it ultimately points to Christ. The conversation also examines the distinction between God's sovereign will and His revealed will. Is it true that a number of people got up out of their graves and talked to others when Jesus resurrected? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around the account in Matthew 27 of what feels like a bunch of random resurrections. We look at other historical writings and their accounts of this event, as well as why none of the other gospel writers mentioned this event. Our hope is that as you listen, you receive encouragement from the reason that we believe God raised all of these people from the dead in a rare and bizarre, yet really cool story. The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. The cross wasn't the end, it was the beginning. Through Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, your past is forgiven, your old life is gone, and new life is available today. The same power that raised Jesus is at work in you. Are you living in Resurrection Life?
This week at Living Hope Fellowship, we celebrated Easter with a powerful message titled “Resurrection: The Consummation of the Gospel” from 1 Corinthians 15. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our faith and the fulfillment of the gospel story. Because Christ rose from the dead, our hope is secure, our faith is not in vain, and we are given the promise of new life. This message reminds us that the resurrection is not just something we celebrate once a year—it transforms how we live every day. Through Christ’s victory over death, we are invited to walk in hope, purpose, and the power of the gospel.

After a long hiatus, Matt rejoins Pastor Derek for a wide-ranging conversation about faith in the modern world. In today's episode, Matt brings some questions that many believers wrestle with — starting with the tension between staying and reforming versus leaving a denomination when it seems to drift theologically. From there, they tackle one of the most delicate balancing acts in ministry and everyday witness: how do you keep the gospel clear and accessible to people around you, without letting cultural pressures reshape it into something unrecognizable? Finally, the conversation turns to the very practical challenge of holding onto your faith as you step into secular spaces — work, culture, friendships — where Christian convictions are increasingly under fire. Some denominations have relied on catechisms heavily throughout their history, but what exactly are they? Are they something modern churches should be using, or something that is better to leave in the past?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around the nature of catechisms. We look through some of the history of catechisms, specifically some of the Baptist ones, and look at when things shifted away from them and whether that was a good or bad thing. We then wrap up by talking about what modern catechisms ought to look like to be most helpful for believers today! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. This week at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek continued the series in Colossians with “Is He Worthy? Part Two” from Colossians 1:24–2:3. Building on last week’s message, we are reminded that Christ’s supremacy calls us to lives of sacrifice, perseverance, and devotion. Through Paul’s example, we see that following Jesus often involves hardship, but it is always worth it because of who Christ is and what He has done. This sermon challenges us to examine our lives and consider whether we are truly living in a way that reflects the worth of Christ. As we prepare our hearts for Easter, we are called to ask an important question: Is He worthy?

This is a rewind episode. Derek was out sick this week, so we have a throwback episode for you back from April 11, 2022.Is committing suicide unforgivable? What happens to Christians who commit suicide? If a loved one has taken their own life, do we have any hope that they will be in heaven? On today's podcast, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a very heavy topic that has had an impact on many people: suicide. We know that all sins are forgivable, but what about one where there is no opportunity to ask forgiveness after the fact? We walk through what the Scripture has to say about the value of life and different cases of suicide in Scripture. Finally, we look at what exactly condemns us to Hell and how we are saved from that and where suicide falls into the mix. We hope that you will be encouraged after listening and would grow your biblical knowledge as well as gain a better understanding of God.The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. This week at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek preached a message titled “Is He Worthy? Christ’s Supremacy and Our Sacrifice” from Colossians 1:24–2:3. In this passage, the Apostle Paul describes both the suffering and the joy that come with faithfully serving Christ and sharing the gospel. The message reminds us that when we truly understand the supremacy of Christ, our response is a life of sacrificial devotion to Him. Paul’s example shows that following Jesus often requires perseverance and a willingness to serve others so that they may come to know the truth of the gospel. The motivation behind that sacrifice is clear: Jesus is worthy. This sermon challenges us to consider whether our lives reflect the worth of Christ and to ask ourselves: Is He truly first in our lives?

This Sunday at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek continued our study through Colossians, preaching from Colossians 1:15–23. The message centered on a powerful truth: nothing and no one can come before or beside Jesus. In this passage, we see that Jesus is not simply important—He is preeminent. He is fully God, the One through whom and for whom all things were created, and the One who is redeeming all of creation. Pastor Derek walked through three key truths about Christ: • Jesus is God • We were created by Jesus and for Jesus • Jesus is redeeming creation We were also reminded that: Jesus is first Jesus went first Jesus must be put first The sermon concluded with three important questions for reflection: • Is Jesus important in my life, or is He truly first? • What gets my first and my best? • Am I listening to and obeying Jesus? As we continue through Colossians, this message challenges us to examine whether Christ truly holds the central place in our lives.
