There was a fight over the location of Moses' body...but why?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through an odd passage in the small book of Jude. Satan and the archangel Michael argue over the corpse of Moses, but there isn't much context around the significance of this or why it's included in Scripture. We look at some outside sources as well as some reasons as to why Satan may want the body of Moses and look at applications for Christians today around this passage! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. Don't boil a goat in its mother's milk...why is this even in the Bible?! Is there any application for us today? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through a few different passages in the Law that forbid the Israelites to boil a goat in the milk of its mother. We look through a few different principles and beliefs as to why this command was included three separate times in Scripture, narrowing down on one leading belief that is affirmed by the surrounding context of the passage. We then expound upon how the heart behind this command is still applicable for Christians today! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. Pastor Derek continued sharing the vision of where God is taking us into the future. Specifically, he taught on how the Bible teaches us to view our money. Money doesn't truly give us satisfaction or security that it promises us. Jesus is after our hearts, not our money and stuff. We find our treasure by looking at where we spend our time and money. That's what we treasure and that's what we truly trust. Giving happens through the local church not to the local church.
In a world full of transactional relationships, what does true, redeeming love actually look like? In this episode, Pastor Derek Holmes delivers the third installment of our four-part series through the book of Ruth. Moving into one of the most pivotal moments of the story, we dive deep into the profound encounter between Ruth and Boaz at the threshing floor—a moment that is so much more than a ancient romance. Pastor Derek investigates how Boaz and Ruth’s unfolding love story serves as a breathtaking metaphorical depiction of the Gospel. Through Boaz’s fierce protection, intentional provision, and sacrificial love for Ruth, we get a tangible, beautiful picture of how Christ cares for us and desires to save and redeem us from our brokenness. But redemption isn't just about the Redeemer; it's also about our response. We look at Ruth’s bold, willing request to be taken under Boaz’s wing, uncovering what it teaches us about the posture of our own hearts. To experience the fullness of Christ’s saving grace, we must come to Him with that same willingness and vulnerability. Whether you feel hidden, broken, or undeserving of love, this episode is a powerful reminder that you have a Kinsman-Redeemer who has already declared His love for you. Key Takeaways From This Episode: - The Gospel in the Old Testament: How the historical accounts of Ruth and Boaz mirror Christ’s ultimate redemptive mission. - The Character of the Redeemer: Understanding Christ’s heart for you through Boaz’s protection and provision. - The Posture of Faith: What Ruth’s surrender teaches us about how we must approach Jesus for salvation.
Pastor Derek explores the 1st Ascension of Christ on the morning of His resurrection after appearing to Mary Magdalene (John 20:17). He ascended a 2nd time 40 days later, as described in Acts 1, after which He sat down at God's right hand. The 4 Purposes for His 1st Ascension: *1. To fulfil the Feast of First Fruits on the day of His resurrection (1Corinthians 15:20-23). *2. To present His BLOOD in the heavenly holy of holies, to establish the New Covenant (Hebrews 9:12). *3. To receive ALL AUTHORITY (Matthew 28:18, Daniel 7:13-14, Philippians 2:9-11): *4. To receive the SPIRIT on our behalf, to give to His people (Acts 2:33). That is why He could impart the Spirit to His apostles later on the same day He rose again (John 20:22).

Making fun of a bald man ends up with a massacre by the paws of she-bears...huh?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie continue through their Strange Scriptures series and talk through 2 Kings 2, looking at the young men who were mauled by she-bears for mocking Elisha's bald head. This passage is stated fairly matter-of-factly and seems like a crazy story to just gloss over. We dig through the context around this passage to find deeper reasonings behind such an imminent judgment on these young fools in 2 Kings. The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. Was there a point that abortions were a punishment for sin in the Bible? Were American evangelicals largely pro-choice in the 1950s and 60s? Why didn't Jesus speak directly about abortion? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around a few pro-choice arguments in Scripture and church history surrounding abortion. We look through some controversial Scriptures as well as some interesting church history to shed light on the biblical truth surrounding the topic of abortion. This week, Matt sits down with Pastor Derek to explore the question, “Did God really seek to kill Moses?” As they unpack this, they discuss the recurring theme of God's provision throughout Scripture and how it ultimately points to Christ. The conversation also examines the distinction between God's sovereign will and His revealed will. They conclude with a discussion on how to read Scripture, along with book recommendations in response to a follow-up question from the missions conference. Is it true that a number of people got up out of their graves and talked to others when Jesus resurrected? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around the account in Matthew 27 of what feels like a bunch of random resurrections. We look at other historical writings and their accounts of this event, as well as why none of the other gospel writers mentioned this event. The cross wasn't the end, it was the beginning. Through Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection, your past is forgiven, your old life is gone, and new life is available today. The same power that raised Jesus is at work in you. Are you living in Resurrection Life?
This week at Living Hope Fellowship, we celebrated Easter with a powerful message titled “Resurrection: The Consummation of the Gospel” from 1 Corinthians 15. The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of our faith and the fulfillment of the gospel story. Because Christ rose from the dead, our hope is secure, our faith is not in vain, and we are given the promise of new life. This message reminds us that the resurrection is not just something we celebrate once a year—it transforms how we live every day. Through Christ’s victory over death, we are invited to walk in hope, purpose, and the power of the gospel.

After a long hiatus, Matt rejoins Pastor Derek for a wide-ranging conversation about faith in the modern world. In today's episode, Matt brings some questions that many believers wrestle with — starting with the tension between staying and reforming versus leaving a denomination when it seems to drift theologically. From there, they tackle one of the most delicate balancing acts in ministry and everyday witness: how do you keep the gospel clear and accessible to people around you, without letting cultural pressures reshape it into something unrecognizable? Finally, the conversation turns to the very practical challenge of holding onto your faith as you step into secular spaces — work, culture, friendships — where Christian convictions are increasingly under fire. Some denominations have relied on catechisms heavily throughout their history, but what exactly are they? Are they something modern churches should be using, or something that is better to leave in the past?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question around the nature of catechisms. We look through some of the history of catechisms, specifically some of the Baptist ones, and look at when things shifted away from them and whether that was a good or bad thing. This week at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek continued the series in Colossians with “Is He Worthy? Part Two” from Colossians 1:24–2:3. Building on last week’s message, we are reminded that Christ’s supremacy calls us to lives of sacrifice, perseverance, and devotion. Through Paul’s example, we see that following Jesus often involves hardship, but it is always worth it because of who Christ is and what He has done. This sermon challenges us to examine our lives and consider whether we are truly living in a way that reflects the worth of Christ. As we prepare our hearts for Easter, we are called to ask an important question: Is He worthy?

This is a rewind episode. Derek was out sick this week, so we have a throwback episode for you back from April 11, 2022.Is committing suicide unforgivable? What happens to Christians who commit suicide? If a loved one has taken their own life, do we have any hope that they will be in heaven? On today's podcast, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a very heavy topic that has had an impact on many people: suicide. We know that all sins are forgivable, but what about one where there is no opportunity to ask forgiveness after the fact? We walk through what the Scripture has to say about the value of life and different cases of suicide in Scripture. Finally, we look at what exactly condemns us to Hell and how we are saved from that and where suicide falls into the mix. This week at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek preached a message titled “Is He Worthy? Christ’s Supremacy and Our Sacrifice” from Colossians 1:24–2:3. In this passage, the Apostle Paul describes both the suffering and the joy that come with faithfully serving Christ and sharing the gospel. The message reminds us that when we truly understand the supremacy of Christ, our response is a life of sacrificial devotion to Him. Paul’s example shows that following Jesus often requires perseverance and a willingness to serve others so that they may come to know the truth of the gospel. The motivation behind that sacrifice is clear: Jesus is worthy. This sermon challenges us to consider whether our lives reflect the worth of Christ and to ask ourselves: Is He truly first in our lives?

The Bible is mixed with historical narrative and with prophecy and poetry, but how can we know the difference? In Part 1 of our Four Cups series, we explore the Cup of Sanctification, which represents salvation. Through God's promise in Exodus 6, we see how He brings His people out from under the weight of slavery and into new life. This message invites us to repent, surrender, and step into the abundant life Jesus offers.
This Sunday at Living Hope Fellowship, Pastor Derek continued our study through Colossians, preaching from Colossians 1:15–23. The message centered on a powerful truth: nothing and no one can come before or beside Jesus. In this passage, we see that Jesus is not simply important—He is preeminent. He is fully God, the One through whom and for whom all things were created, and the One who is redeeming all of creation. Pastor Derek walked through three key truths about Christ: • Jesus is God • We were created by Jesus and for Jesus • Jesus is redeeming creation We were also reminded that: Jesus is first Jesus went first Jesus must be put first The sermon concluded with three important questions for reflection: • Is Jesus important in my life, or is He truly first? • What gets my first and my best? • Am I listening to and obeying Jesus? As we continue through Colossians, this message challenges us to examine whether Christ truly holds the central place in our lives.

This Sunday, Pastor Derek continued our study through the book of Colossians with a message titled “The Why to Our What” from Colossians 1:1–14. The central truth was clear: Christ must be preeminent in our faith. Big Idea: Christ must be preeminent for our faith to be relevant. Walking verse by verse through the opening of Colossians, we were reminded that: When Christ is preeminent, the believer has identity (Col. 1:1–2, 14) When Christ is preeminent, the gospel has power (Col. 1:3–8) When Christ is preeminent, life has meaning (Col. 1:9–11) When Jesus is preeminent, worship gets real (Col. 1:12–14) Everything in the Christian life flows from keeping Jesus first. This message calls us back to the foundation of our faith—making Christ not just present, but prominent in every area of our lives. If you missed Sunday, we invite you to listen and be encouraged.

God couldn't possibly instruct someone to sin, right? How do we make sense of a confusing passage in 2 Samuel that seems to indicate this?In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question on a specific passage of Scripture to explain why David was in sin while instructing a census to be taken. We dig through who influenced this (hint: it likely isn't God), David's potential motives in this, and how he missed one big part of God's command around taking a census to bright light to this question. Most people have experienced some church hurt, sometimes to the point of losing faith in what the church even is or what it stands for. Some feel isolated and confused because church is supposed to be safe. What should we do when these things happen? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question on how to respond when faith has been lost in the institutional church, or even just institutions in general. We talk through all of the God ordained institutions mentioned in Scripture, examples of corruption in those institutions throughout history, and what a person's responsibility and response should be in these kinds of hurtful situations. Our hope is that if you have church hurt and are listening, that you would find hope in the Word of God's instruction to rebuild trust in Jesus and follow His direction for the Church! The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. ICE vs Protestors has been all the news rage recently, and everyone out there has some (usually very strong) opinion on it. How should Christians think about ICE and the work they are doing? How should we respond to law enforcement in general? What about when we don't agree with everything they are doing? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through a listener question on who ICE is, what the Bible says about immigration in general, following the law of the land, and when/if to ever disobey that law. We understand how heated this topic is (especially because it's happening right where we live!) and our hope is that as you listen, you are able to take a step back from the emotion, think critically while seeking what is right and true while also approaching the topic from a standpoint of biblical love. The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. What we allow into our lives affects our spiritual health. In this episode, we explore what it means to detox the spirit by separating from what contaminates us and choosing to live by the Spirit, not the flesh. Through Scripture, we're challenged to starve doubt, negativity, and sin while feeding our souls with God's Word, worship, and prayer allowing God to renew our minds and lead us into life and peace.
A church near us recently had protestors storm in during a worship service and derail everything. How should Christians be responding to actual persecution? In today's episode, Pastor Derek and Pastor Jackie talk through what the Bible has to say about persecution. We look at how often the Bible tells us to expect it, as well as how to respond in moments of persecution and the results of responding in a godly manner. Our hope is that this episode can be encouraging to believers in America and around the world suffering persecution and feeling confused in how to respond to such tough trials. The 17:17 podcast is a ministry of Roseville Baptist Church (MN) that seeks to tackle cultural issues and societal questions from a biblical worldview so that listeners discover what the Bible has to say about the key issues they face on a daily basis. Brian From is joined by Pastor Derek Buikema of Orland Park Christian Reformed Church to talk about his call to ministry and what he loves most about being a pastor. Derek shares why “ordinary” churches—rooted in preaching, sacraments, and everyday faithfulness—are often where deep discipleship and quiet, life-changing ministry happens. The conversation also touches on church planting, blue-collar faith, and Derek’s surprising side passion: performing Shakespearean improv comedy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
