When new owners took over the Washington Commanders, many fans celebrated what seemed like the end to two decades of dysfunction. If you’ve ever been part of a dysfunctional team, you know it is demoralizing and draining. There is, however, a game plan for change. To go from frustration to fulfillment, from heartache to unstoppable joy.

Television shows like Survivor have become a window into the selfishness that characterizes our culture and fallen humanity as a whole. As contestants lie, cheat, and steal to gain advantage over their opponents, we recognize the same self-seeking, self-aggrandizing mindset that is all around us and, unfortunately, often within us. This mindset, while pervasive in 21st century America, is hardly unique to us. The early church had to contend with it, as well; it was, in fact, threatening to pull the Philippian church apart. As Paul continues the appeal for unity he began at the end of Philippians 1, we see some of the basic facts about the role our humility plays.

The 6th sermon in a series on Philippians. Paul encourages the Philippians to enjoy the joy of unity of fellowship that can only come when they are conformed to the mindset of Jesus: the God-Man who humbled himself in love! By entering into his humility with their own humility, the Christian life can really begin to blossom. We exist for the praise of the glory of God’s grace in Christ Jesus. Everything we do as a church must bring glory to God in the name of Christ Jesus. We are an intergenerational church. We strive to make a seamless journey of faith from birth to old age. We are overtly trinitarian. We are always looking for the work of the Father through the Son by the power of the Holy Spirit. We value people. We present the ideal of God’s plan while embracing the reality of life.

Jesus didn't invite people to CHURCH... He invited them into a radical, transformational relationship with Himself and His Kingdom. Every Jesus follower is SENT... sent to walk with those who don't yet believe.

It can be easy to read our text tonight without feeling the full impact of Paul’s words. It is the prelude to the greatest and most moving passage the Paul wrote about Christ Jesus which describes the depth of the love Christ had for us, and the sacrifice He made. Often the real focus of Chapter 2 is the end, so we may hurry through the first four verses in order to get that part. This time, Bro. Hughes reads Philippians 2 with greater interest. The message is provoking and should become the foundation on all that we do. Every action, intention, plan, and purpose should be filtered through this lens. In our humanity, it is easy to become self-centered. We become concerned about our agenda and interests. Paul tells us to be more concerned about His interests than our own. A great fear that Paul had was that the church would become self-centered and self-focused. He knew that the greatest danger of every church is the spirit of selfishness. In the opening verses of this chapter, Paul asks that if the Love of God has made an impact on our lives, to do him a favor and love one another as Christ has loved us. He offered four points for us to consider. First, we are all in Christ. We may not all be as close as we need to be, but we are all saved by the same blood. We are all sinners saved by grace. Secondly, everything that we do should be motivated by the power of love. His love for me has never sought anything for us but good and never based on our merit. His love is based on his mercy for us. We do not deserve His love, and our love for others must be based on that same love. Third, we all share the same Holy Ghost. Finally, we must love based on human compassion. We all want mercy, therefore, we have to extend mercy. We did not have to earn Christ’s mercy, nor could we. We have to extend mercy to others in the same way that Christ has extended mercy to us.

When asked "Whose Team are you on?", most people would answer, if they are being really honest, would be "I am on my own team." Paul in is letter to the Philippians shows us how we can have unity in our family, business and church.
