As for the other four cases in which Trump has been indicted on 91 counts, the Supreme Court may eventually consider the issue of Presidential immunity and ballot eligibility, but a case involving a rioter charged in the Jan. 6 insurrection may also have a big impact on the charges brought against Trump by Special Counsel Jack Smith. Fani Willis, the prosecutor in the Georgia election interference case, has come under scrutiny for potential conflict of interest and Hunter Biden has been indicted for tax evasion, as he continues sparring with the House Oversight Committee about testifying in its investigation. On Tuesday, Special Counsel Jack Smith unsealed a four-count indictment against Donald Trump — the former US president and current front-runner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination — for crimes he is alleged to have committed during his failed efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election — an election which he lost. Donald Trump has broken yet another norm, becoming the first US president in American history to be indicted on criminal charges. He surrendered to authorities Tuesday afternoon in lower Manhattan, and when he appeared before Judge Juan Manuel Marchan, he pleaded “not guilty” to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records, in connection with a hush-money scheme ahead of the 2016 presidential election. Mr. Trump returned to his Florida home at Mar-a-Lago later on Tuesday. He gave a defiant speech, riddled with false claims, last night. Politically, Trump's indictment has been a boon for him. His poll numbers have spiked, and he says he has raised more than $7 million dollars since news of his indictment broke last month. Next on Midday, we're going to take stock of the numerous criminal and civil investigations into former president Donald Trump's actions before, during and after his White House stint. The government watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington reports that as of late last year, Mr. Trump had been accused of committing at least 56 criminal offenses in the period between the launch of his campaign in 2015 and now. There was news this week of an extraordinary legal finding by a DC Appeals Court pertaining to the criminal investigation into Mr. Trump's unauthorized retention of classified federal documents at his Florida resort.
