So while purists call for mass eco-insurgency and liberals circulate change.org petitions, the A22 Network has responded by organizing and mobilizing huge numbers of committed militants around the Western world, using large-scale civil disobedience as a tactic to push governments to adopt basic climate policies. These tactics have been controversial but successful: Just Stop Oil, the British branch of A22 perhaps best known for throwing soup at a Van Gogh, recently disbanded itself because its main demand — that the UK government cease approving any new oil and gas exploitation projects — has been adopted. Historian, Professor Clare Wright tells the story of a formative moment — before the Mabo decision — in Australia's democracy that you may not have heard of.Historian Clare Wright moved her family to Yirrkala in North-East Arnhem land in 2010. She became a part of the Yolngu community and kept in touch after the family returned to Melbourne.Little by little, Clare learned about an extraordinary moment in Australian history, when Yolngu people used their artwork and their language, Yolngu Matha to petition the Federal government over a planned bauxite mine on their traditional lands.The bark petitions were not sent in the traditional sense, pleading up to an authority, but rather asserted Yolngu custodianship of the land, and spoke as equal partners to the Australian government.This episode of Conversations touches on Indigenous stories, Yolngu, Yirrkala, Australian democracy, the Bark Petitions, Naku Dharuk, Yolngu Matha, mining, the Australian Government, Menzies, Kim Beazley Snr.

Today on Jewish Studies Unscrolled, we dive into the fascinating world of kvitlekh—19th-century petitions addressed to Rabbi Elijah Guttmacher, a misnagdic rabbi whose miracle-working reputation drew thousands of supplicants. Discovered in a Polish attic in 1932 and preserved by the YIVO Institute, these handwritten pleas offer vivid, if fragmentary, snapshots of Jewish life in Eastern Europe, revealing stories of financial struggles, illness, and family crises. Glenn Dynner, historian and author of The Light of Learning: Hasidism in Poland on the Eve of the Holocaust, joins us to share how he has teased history from these tantalizingly incomplete records.
