Columbia Energy Exchange
Michael Gerrard and Jeff Holmstead on Next Chapter in US Climate Policy

Columbia Energy Exchange

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 17, 2026 47:45

The climate policy landscape in the US is in flux. Last month, the Environmental Protection Agency repealed its own power to regulate greenhouse gases. Two weeks later, the Supreme Court said it will hear a case which the city of Boulder, Colorado, brought against the oil companies ExxonMobil and Suncor that could determine the fate of lawsuits brought by cities and states against fossil fuel companies over damages from climate change.  Since its adoption in 2009, EPA's endangerment finding — which says that greenhouse gases harm public health and welfare — had formed the legal foundation for major federal climate regulations. In announcing its rescission, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin called it the largest single deregulatory event in US history. But the repeal may be held up in courts for years, and it's just one piece of a complicated regulatory puzzle.  Petitions for review challenging the EPA's rescission of the endangerment finding are due in just over a month. So how might these major policy swings play out in practical terms? What are the near- and long-term stakes at the federal and state levels? What are the reactions from and the preferences of industry? And how might all of this play out in terms of US greenhouse gas emissions? Today on the show, Bill Loveless speaks with Michael Gerrard and Jeff Holmstead about possible legal strategies and outcomes for challenges to both the endangerment finding rescission and the Boulder case. Michael is the founder and faculty director of the Columbia University Sabin Center for Climate Change Law. Before joining Columbia in 2009, he practiced environmental law in New York for three decades. Jeff is a partner and co-chair of the Environmental Strategies Group at Bracewell, LLP, an international law firm. From 2001 to 2005, he served as the assistant administrator for air and radiation in the EPA during the administration of President George W. Bush.  Credits: Hosted by Jason Bordoff and Bill Loveless. Produced by Mary Catherine O'Connor, Caroline Pitman, and Kyu Lee. Engineering by Gregory Vilfranc.

i On our radar this week… © Clay Jones – claytoonz.substack.com In the last week, the list of Donald Trump's broken campaign promises was seemingly endless: beginning with starting a Middle East War and increasing gas prices to go up 60-cents-a-gallon (with the prospect of Four Dollar per gallons looming … maybe even more). The “I will end inflation” guy is now looking at inflation headed in the wrong direction. The man who promised to create manufacturing jobs has given way to the reality of manufacturing job losses. Promises of draining the swamp have taken a multi-billion-dollar detour into the Trump family bank accounts. The long-ago pledge to balance the budget and pay off the national debt have been transformed into record-setting deficits in order to cut taxes for the yachts-and-private-jets crowd. And the promise to release the Epstein Files … well, we all know how that's going. Also this week: We have the tenth special election flip from Republican to Democrat – this time in New Hampshire … as the Trump Train Wreck barrels down the tracks with his polling numbers hitting a new all-time low. His latest political Hail Mary is the SAVE Act which would take away the right to vote from untold hundreds-of-thousands. But his demands are falling on deaf ears on Capitol Hill, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune telling him it ain't gonna happen.  The Trump family has, of course, figured out how to make money from the war. Sonny and Fredo, a.k.a. Don Jr. and Eric, are backing a new drone company that is vying to meet fresh demand from the Pentagon and fill a hole left by the administration's ban on new Chinese drones in the U.S.   Clay Jones – claytoonz.substack.com Trump says the U.S. won the war in the first hour. But they still managed to spend 11-billion dollars after we supposedly had won…and the bombing continues.  It looks like the Gordie Howe Bridge will be putting the Maroun Family into the penalty box. Tolls to cross the not-yet-open bridge will be less than half the fees at the competing Ambassador Bridge for both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks, setting in motion a forthcoming toll war between the two Detroit River crossings. Michigan Democrats are using the Bridge controversy to highlight the financial ties between the Maroun family and GOP Senate candidate Mike Rogers.  In Michigan, Republican candidates for Governor are all calling for pretty much closing most of state government by repealing the income tax, property taxes, or both. Apparently they think things like State Police, prisons, public health, public parks, food safety inspections, mental health and our universities can all be funded with the sales tax, sin taxes, unclaimed bottle deposits, the lottery and the tooth fairy. The state Senate has passed bipartisan legislation to help people deal with medical debt. But its fate is uncertain in the House, where Speaker Matt Hall has very different ideas for addressing medical debt through more transparency in pricing. Petitions have been filed with the state to force a vote in November on a deceptive proposal which, on its face, prohibits non-citizens from voting in Michigan … something that is already a part of state law. Left unstated by the backers are the proposal's impact on voting rights. A longtime chronicler of state government has taken a look behind the proposal of “Americans for Citizens Only Voting.” John Lindstrom has covered state government over the last four decades. Since retiring as publisher of the highly regarded Gongwer Michigan report, he's been a columnist for the Detroit Free Press. John is the newest inductee into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame – the ceremony formalizing his induction is a month from now in East Lansing. We’re now on YouTube every week! We must slow down and filter all matters of life through the wisdom criteria of the Word. How do we govern our lives according to the overreaching counsel of heavenly wisdom and avoid what is earthly and natural? Let us not think too highly of ourselves and presume that we always know the difference. How do you know that what you request of the Most High is in line with His will and way? Let's find out!

Editorial Mode Theological Core The Dual Revelation of Christ The Transfiguration provides two distinct forms of sustenance for the "exhausted disciple" facing the uncertainties of faith and life: 1. Divine Glory (The Blue Halo)Jesus as the fulfillment of Law (Moses) and Prophets (Elijah). He is the authoritative "Word made flesh" who sustains us through his absolute sovereignty. 2. The Human Touch (The Gentle Hand)The transition from blinding light to a simple touch on the shoulder. "Get up. Don't be afraid." The power of God accompanies us back into the "valley" of daily struggle. "The church is not an escape; it is salvation. We lift our faces to the mountain to find courage for the valley full of broken glass." Symbolism & Context Stained Glass Analysis Blue Halo: Represents divinity and eternal glory (vs. Red for sacrifice). Moses' Horns: A historical art tradition (lightning bolts) signifying the radiance of God. The Scroll & Tablets: The convergence of all scripture into the person of Jesus. Children's Message The boy who grew too big to fit through doors (Pride) vs. finding joy in passing the ball (Humility). Key Keywords #Matthew17 #Transfiguration #Epiphany #MountSinai #Humility Reading Time: ~12 min read • Focus: Spiritual Growth & Theology LaGrave Avenue CRC This document summarizes the worship service held at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church, focusing on the biblical narrative of the Transfiguration. The service explores the dual nature of Christ's divinity and his personal care, providing spiritual sustenance for those exhausted by life's journeys. Community Worship and Liturgical Practice The service opened with a warm welcome to both physical and online attendees, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the congregation. The liturgy moved through a formal Call to Confession based on Matthew 7, warning against "false prophets" and emphasizing the need for "good fruit" in the life of a believer. This was followed by a communal prayer of confession and a declaration of forgiveness rooted in Hebrews 1, affirming Christ as the radiance of God's glory and the sustainer of all things. Lessons on Humility and Pride During the children's message, a narrative was shared regarding the dangers of vanity and the virtue of humility. Through the story of a boy who physically grew larger with every boast—eventually becoming too big to fit into his school or car—the speaker illustrated how bragging isolates individuals. The lesson concluded that by serving others, celebrating their successes, and practicing kindness, one finds true happiness and community belonging. The Dual Revelation of the Transfiguration Divine Glory (The Blue Halo) Reveals Jesus as the Eternal Word and fulfillment of the Law (Moses) and Prophets (Elijah). Human Touch (The Gentle Hand) The personal comfort of Jesus saying "Get up, don't be afraid," accompanying believers into the valley. Sermon: The Glory and the Touch The sermon focused on Matthew 17:1-8 and the specific depiction of the Transfiguration in the church's stained-glass windows. The preacher noted that while most halos in the church are red (signifying servanthood and sacrifice), the Transfiguration halo is blue, symbolizing Christ's divine glory. The event is described as a "magnifying glass" where the weight of the Old Testament—represented by Moses (the Law) and Elijah (the Prophets)—is condensed into the person of Jesus. The message highlighted two specific gifts Jesus gave his exhausted disciples on the mountain: A Vision of Glory: A reminder of his divine authority that sustained the disciples, such as Peter and John, throughout their later ministries. A Gentle Touch: After the terrifying display of power, Jesus touched his disciples and told them not to be afraid, demonstrating that his immense power is coupled with intimate care. Congregational Intercessions The church engaged in extensive prayer for global and local concerns. Petitions were made for peace in conflict zones including Ukraine, Israel, Gaza, Sudan, and Myanmar. Locally, the congregation remembered members facing significant health challenges, those in hospice care, and families grieving recent losses. The prayer also highlighted the church's mission work, specifically mentioning support for pastoral training in Kyrgyzstan. Symbolism in the "Word in the Windows"

Jim Osman guides listeners through Psalm 119:33-40, revealing four essential prayers every believer should bring before God regarding His Word. This isn't merely an intellectual exercise—it's a roadmap for spiritual transformation through Scripture. Osman unpacks how the psalmist longed for God to grant understanding that leads to obedience, not just head knowledge. He challenges listeners to pray for hearts genuinely inclined toward Scripture rather than worldly gain. The sermon addresses a crucial tension: our eyes naturally drift toward worthless distractions while our hearts chase empty profits. Osman demonstrates how the Word cultivates genuine fear of God, turning believers from vanity toward what truly gives life. He confronts the reality that many Christians survive on one spiritual meal per week when a daily feast awaits them in Scripture. This message closes with two pointed challenges: commit to regular, systematic Bible reading, and for men, recognize that spiritual leadership begins with personal time in God's Word. Transformation doesn't happen by accident—it requires dependence on God's work through Scripture combined with diligent pursuit of His truth. ★ Support this podcast ★

In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Professor Clare Wright OAM chats with Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies about Näku Dhäruk The Bark Petitions: How the People of Yirrkala Changed the Course of Australian Democracy. Here's what you'll discover in this episode: Clare Wright's deep 15-year cultural integration with the Yolŋu community in North-East Arnhem Land enabled her to write The Bark Petitions collaboratively and authentically from a First Nation's perspective. The four Bark Petitions were created by Yolŋu Elders in 1963 as a form of diplomacy between two sovereign nations. The Yolŋu Elders were protesting bauxite mining on sacred lands without their consent. The Bark Petitions reframes the petitions as a manifestation of Yolŋu law and territorial rights, revealing a sophisticated legal system governing land, kinship and governance that predates and rivals European colonial systems. Wright positions The Bark Petitions as Australian political history with Indigenous perspectives restored. The Bark Petitions transcends a classic object biography. Instead, it's a hybrid of cultural storytelling, sacred stories, oral history, narrative history, political activism and a powerful account of sovereignty and resistance. The Bark Petitions employs a kaleidoscopic, non-linear narrative structure. Wright deliberately gives the final voice to a contemporary Yolŋu woman, emphasising that Indigenous people are living storytellers shaping ongoing national conversations and positioning the Bark Petitions as an eternal flame of resistance and knowledge.

Step into Episode 188 of On The Delo as Delo sits down with Hunu founders Deyton and Breaben to break down how two former college wide receivers turned their love of soda into a superfood sports drink built for athletes and students. From juicing in a tiny kitchen and running late-night “chemistry labs” to navigating manufacturing, testing, and regulations, they share the real story behind creating a soda that's actually made from whole foods and designed to support recovery, immunity, and everyday performance. From patience and integrity in formulation to the pressures of social media, money myths, and working day jobs while bootstrapping a beverage brand, this conversation goes deep on what it really takes to build something that's good for people without cutting corners. The trio also explores earth-based healing, Irish sea moss, shifting drinking culture among Gen Z, and Hunu's bigger mission with a Healthy Soda Act to get better options into schools and youth programs, all while keeping it fun, human, and honest. If you're into entrepreneurship, wellness, or just want a smarter way to enjoy soda, this episode will give you both inspiration and practical perspective.Chapter Guide (Timestamps):(0:00 - 2:11) Freestyle Intro, Delo's Cold Open, and Meeting the Hunu Founders(2:12 - 4:22) College Football, Wide Receiver Room Stories, and the Spark for a Better Beverage(4:23 - 7:28) Patience, Integrity, and Refusing to Cut Corners in Building a Whole-Food Formula(7:29 - 10:51) From Shirt Business to CPG: Learning the Beverage Game and Naming Hunu (“Who Knew”)(10:52 - 15:28) Regulations, Testing, Manufacturing Partners, and Funding the Brand While Working Day Jobs(15:29 - 21:05) Money Myths, Social Media Illusions, and Attention as a Non‑Negotiable Business Pillar(21:06 - 24:55) Superfood Sports Soda: Irish Sea Moss, Athlete Recovery, and Redefining What “Soda” Can Be(24:56 - 32:31) Gen Z Drinking Shifts, Earth-Based Healing, and Discovering Sea Moss, Maca, and Moringa(32:32 - 36:36) Whole-Food Eating, Fasting, Movement, and Designing a Lifestyle You Actually Enjoy(36:37 - 43:06) Healthy Soda Act, Petitions, Distribution Dreams, Rapid-Fire Questions, and Delo's Close

A pair of petitions have been separately presented to Parliament today - asking politicians to address two hot-button topics. Advocates calling for a social media ban for under 16 year olds had theirs accepted by the education minister - who is promising regulation is in the pipeline. At the same time, Malcolm Mulholland arrived with a call to fix the health system, along with what he estimates is the longest petition ever handed over in New Zealand. Political reporter Giles Dexter was at the handovers on Parliament's forecourt.

Advocates for All Nebraskans, a nonprofit lead by former Nebraska Republican Party chair Eric Underwood, introduced its fourth and fifth petitions of the 2026 election cycle Tuesday. One of the proposed constitutional amendments would require all elections in the state to be conducted exclusively through paper ballots that are counted by hand. The other would give all five of the Nebraska's electoral votes to the statewide winner instead of the current congressional district allocations. Lincoln radio host Doug Fitzgerald said the petition drives have national implications that cannot be overstated.

Google's proposed data center in South Indianapolis is facing another hurdle. At Monday night's City-County Council meeting, Councilor Michael-Paul Hart, who represents the district, pulled the rezoning plan for more debate. Indiana students are missing less school, a sign that they are slowly recovering from a SURGE in absenteeism in the wake of the pandemic. Voter advocacy groups delivered petitions from about nine thousand Hoosiers to the Statehouse Tuesday, opposing a redistricting effort. There is growing confusion about who should - and can - get a vaccine for COVID-19 as advice from the federal government conflicts with that of some health experts.
