Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has officially requested the African Union (AU) to take immediate collective action against the ongoing xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks aimed at African nationals in South Africa. This message, presented by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the 21st Extraordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola, strongly calls for the continental organization to prioritize this urgent matter on the official agenda for the upcoming 40th Ordinary Session of the Assembly, which is set for January 2027.President Tinubu cautioned that the ongoing anti-immigrant animosity and violence in South Africa pose a direct threat to continental solidarity, unity, and peaceful coexistence.While recognizing South Africa's sovereign authority to implement its domestic immigration regulations, Nigeria stressed that law enforcement actions cannot serve as a justification for violence or the infringement of the fundamental dignity of foreign nationals.In addition to addressing xenophobia, Nigeria utilized this platform to advocate for the Luanda Action Plan aimed at conflict prevention. On April 11, 1993, a riot broke out at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville, OH, primarily due to tensions between the prisoners and the guards. The riot went on for 11 days resulting in 10 deaths and millions of dollars in damages. 23-year-old prisoner Keith LaMar was a witness to the riot, and although there was no physical evidence linking him to any involvement in the riot, the prosecution focused on him presumably because he refused to aid them in their investigation. Many incentivized and coerced prison informants testified that Keith was the leader behind the riot while the prosecution failed to present the exculpatory evidence in their possession that others were responsible. Education reforms dominated the state Legislature this year. Most efforts failed, though a few bills await action from Gov. Kelly Ayotte. Lawmakers rejected bills mandating new public school courses, open enrollment expansion, and increased oversight of the state's school voucher program. The federal courthouse in Concord handles all kinds of cases, but over the past year one particular type of case has shot up: Habeas Corpus petitions by people detained by ICE. Lawyers say filing these petitions is a way for detainees to get due process, but the sheer number is putting a strain on the system. Don't kill off funding for arts and culture, that's the message a jazz funeral band's delivered to Wellington City Council today, along with a petition asking it to rethink budget cuts. The council's looking at slashing more than $400,000 of funding that goes to arts and events grants and venue subsidies. Arts Wellington is one of the advocacy groups behind the petition, co-chair Kirsten Mason spoke to Lisa Owen.
