For the finale of Season 3 I've swapped roles with Dr James Brown of the ADHD Adults Podcast and ADHDadultUK Charity - the 1st ever ADHDAF guest - to answer the questions I've been asking for 2.5 years to conclude the season which almost didn't get released & ADHD Awareness Month 2024. Whilst we explore the themes of Internalised misogyny, ableism and RSD, this lengthy, side-questy and VERY sweary (sorry Mum) chinwag is a celebration of launching stage one of ADHDAF+ Charity and ADHDAF Emporium and all that's been overcome to continue ADHDAF solo for a whole year. And it is an ENORMOUS THANK YOU to all who have supported this podcast, the socials, the online peer support community, the live events, the retreat and ADHDAF Day. I can't say thank you enough to you all!- As explained in the episode(!!!) this cover photo is by the incredible @summonfirehotography- Editing and jingle by @sessionzservices - The playlist for all season 3 guests 'ADHD Song', including my ADHDAF Anthem is available to listen to HEREI must admit I was cringing at the amount of times I swear in this episode - likely because it turned into a relaxed conversation between two friends. HOWEVER, I realised that if I edited the swearing out, I would only be doing so to appease my own internalised misogyny! So I've kept the swears in for that reason, and because it is symbolic of all that I've put into ADHDAF since April '22 - every single 'eff' I have to give! :)THANKS SO MUCH to James for interviewing me and for all of his support from day dot - a man who has done DOUBLE the ammont of live shows I have at 70 in the same period!! Trigger warning: Alongside swearing we discuss some heavy topics such as: bullying, ableism, trolling, sexism, internalised misogyny, addiction, accidental injury, premature death, suicidal ideation, suicide, self harm, divorce, family and relationship struggles, bereavement, abusive relationships, self loathing, depression and anxiety. This episode is dedicated to Jodi Walsham and to all ADHD adults tragically no longer with us. Jodi's Mother Jayne shares Jodi's story on World Mental Health Day in ADHD Awareness Month to raise awareness about the serious danger to the lives of what is underestimated at 196,000 vulnerable people currently on waiting lists for ADHD assessment in the UK. It is a common misconception that ADHD is a mental health condition. It is in fact a Neurodevelopmental condition. But in many cases the impact of battling through life with unidentified and unmanaged ADHD, and the trauma this can bring to life circumstances can lead to commonly co-occurring mental health conditions and severe mental health crisis; and as in Jodi's case - who was also awaiting assessment for Autism - the lack of support available resulted in tragedy. TRIGGER WARNING: There are very triggering topics covered from the very start of this episode, including: suicide, suicidal ideation, self harm, drug addiction, premature loss of life, bullying, relationship struggles, depression, anxiety, self harm, divorce, traffic accidents. If you are struggling, please do not suffer in silence. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There is free and immediate support out there so please REACH OUT FOR HELP. Jayne is heavily involved with the suicide prevention charity Baton of Hope. I am so grateful to Jayne for all of her support and for allowing us to hear about and from her wonderful daughter Jodi. I can't even guess the number of times I've told the story about the conversation with a newly diagnosed friend which led to my ADHD discovery. Well, THIS IS THAT FRIEND! I am so excited to share this VERY special in-person interview with the girl who kicked off this whole safari... All aboard the late ADHD discovery roller coaster with the one and only Katy Smith. Katy is 'in fashion', and always fashionably late! :) Sydney's finest was misdiagnosed with BPD in childhood, but as is often the case, she wasn't told about it until adulthood and the diagnosis didn't fit at all. Suffering a lifetime of masking her ADHD symptoms and battling commonly co-occurring anxiety, depression and disordered eating. Alongside bashing her self esteem to smithereens, the wrecking ball of ADHD destroyed her personal relationships. An ex made her realise she had ADHD, and once diagnosed in 2018 she 'subtly' mentioned her newly discovered condition to the most ADHD person she knew; a person she met and raised hell in Thailand with seven years prior...me! This legend plays an enormous role in ADHDAF Podcast history.THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING KATY! Having been interviewed by the LEGENDARY Katy Weber on her INCREDIBLE Podcast: Women & ADHD I am honoured to swap roles and have her hop onboard the late ADHD discovery roller coaster with me! In this interview/chinwag Katy shares her experiences with school struggles and truency, which left her feeling like a failure. Like many, she discovered her neurodivergence during lockdown. She impulsively launched her podcast pre diagnosis(!) and credits its many conversations as her own form of therapy; which have led to her becoming an ADHD expert. I am so grateful to get to collaborate with Katy once again, and was particularly moved by her all too familiar experience of imposter syndrome post ADHD diagnosis and her relentless drive to strive for 'what's next'. Trigger Warning: There are some very triggering topics mentioned from the very start of this episode, including: depression, anxiety, ED, alcoholism, addiction, chronic pain, BPD, mental health struggles, suicide, suicidal ideation, misdiagnosis and bullying. Also contains swearing. That said, this interview with the LEGENDARY Adelaide Saywell, much like the Content Creator themself,is an absolute joy! I am incredibly grateful to Adelaide for giving me their time, sharing their lived experiences & enlightening me on Autism and AuDHD; neither of which I have any lived experience nor much knowledge about. Adelaide uses their enormous platforms on Instagram, YouTube and Tik Tok to support others with similar struggles. Their vulnerability, positivity, tips and reminders are invaluable and inspirational. Adlelaide severely struggled with their mental health from the age of 14, which led to them being sectioned under the mental health act at 21. Having received a Misdiagnoses of EUPD Previously known as BPD; through their own research she identified ADHD and Autism and was finally diagnosed with ADHD at 28... and after some serious self advocacy for Right To Choose(!) they received their Autism diagnosis. Live from Edinburgh Fringe, (well, sort of) two emotionally exhausted late discovered ADHD women use the very little energy they have to raise ADHD awareness with 'the ultimate shame eradicator'. 'Have you seen Slumdog Millionaire?' This informal chat with Catherine Millan is as much about Destiny and Dharma as it is all that the episode title denotes. Late discovered ADHDer Catherine and I were thinking about that same film at the exact same moment, and this picture in which she blends in with the ADHDAF leopard print is again a total 'coincidence'... Or is it?! :) Whatever you believe in, and despite the current climate, I am certain that this crucial conversation will leave you feeling hopeful for the future!Catherine Millan founded Be What You See because she believed the world was ready to make the real change required to reduce all forms of discrimination. As a Black, female lesbian who lives with ADHD and Dyslexia, Catherine has always lived in the margins of society and has witnessed first-hand inequalities in healthcare, education and the workplace. This fuelled Catherine's passion to get involved in initiatives such as the Stonewall Awards, the Race Equality Charter Mark and working with her employers to design inclusive environments for neurodiverse employees.Liverpool's finest, Catherine's first-hand experience of adversity and learning from others' stories have been a driving force for her to bring about changes in society to help build inclusive communities. 'It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are'... or 'it might be a flop' ;) Two years on from her original ADHD AF interview, one year since her very successful ADHD awareness raising one-woman show, and 3 days prior to the sequel; I catch up with Actress, Writer and Edinbrugh Fringe Superstar Nicole Nadler / 'Optimistic Meg'. Nicole discovered she has ADHD at 30, in this chaotic, hyperverbal conversation - in which we try really hard not to talk over each other and stay on topic - she reflects on what has changed for her and what has remained the same, whilst sharing insights, hacks, calamities, hilarities, hopes and more. But why has she chosen to give her all to yet another ADHD Edinburgh Fringe show? And Why is she (still) like this? :) I can't wait to see the show those of you who came to ADHD AF Alien Nation got to see a snippet of this Friday! Running 2nd - 24th Aug - Here's what it's all about... 'Meet Nicole: She's hyperverbal, chaotic, and a little dramatic with deep self loathing and crippling self esteem issues, and always thought she was a complete disaster - until she found out she had ADHD. Three years later she impulsively wrote and performed her first one woman show in 2023 about discovering her ADHD at 30, Why Am I Like This? Bracing herself for failure, the opposite happened - everyone loved the show (and her?!) So why is it so hard to believe? Why is she so empty? Now there's a new question - Why Am I (Still) Like This? The sequel to Why Am I (Still) Like This? is the story of what happens next after that euphoric moment of discovery and the many ways all of the pieces come together and fall apart all over again.' Kat Brown returns for the second instalment of this crucial conversation. If you've not heard part 1, you can listen HERE Kat shares her late discovered ADHD experience which led to her writing the PHENOMENAL 'It's Not A Bloody Trend: Understanding Life as an ADHD Adult'. Although there is so much laughter and inspiration in this interview/chinwag we start with the topic of eating disorders which commonly co-occur with ADHD. If you might find this triggering perhaps skip the first 15 minutes and please know that you are not alone in your struggles. You can access support: Beat Eating Disorders Seed.charity TalkED Kat also shares important information and tips aroun ableist media, therapy, relationships and more, the simplest but most perfect example of ADHD acceptance and an ABSOLUTELY HUNTASTIC BANGER of an ADHD song! They say you should never meet your heroes, but this episode disproves that theory! I could talk to Kat Brown ALL DAY LONG, and I did! Which is why, instead of losing any of the absolute GOLD late discovered ADHD Author Kat shared with me, I decided to make it a two parter! The second and final instalment will be out tomorrow... Kat is the Author of 'It's Not A Bloody Trend: Understanding Life as an ADHD Adult' and 'No One Talks About This Stuff: Twenty-Two Stories of Almost Parenthood', both are subjects extremely close to my heart. This interview/chinwag delves into both of the book topics; the deep grief and hard work that goes into accepting both the realities of a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition and infertility... BUT we have some proper giggles/cackles along the way! Exploring Kat's battles with commonly co-occurring conditions of ADHD, to bullying, mysogyny, the bloody media(!) and MORE! This is such an incredible conversation I'm extremely lucky, grateful and excited to be sharing... and I'm even more all-of-the-above to be collaborating TWICE this week in real life with this ABSOLUTE BLOODY LEGEND at the last ADHD AF Alien Nation show and Flackstock Festival THANK YOU SO MUCH KAT! I'm so excited to have the LEGENDARY Comedian & Author Suzi Ruffell hop aboard the late ADHD discovery rollercoaster this week! Despite being diagnosed with Dyslexia as a child, Suzi's ADHD went undiscovered until very recently. Labelled ‘hyper' as a child, Suzi found school really difficult, which inevitably led to truancy, which is common for many of us unidentified ADHDers. Suzi has noticed many female Comedians also just discovering their Neurodivergence… could it be the traits of the condition itself, or the result of a lifetime of ADHD going undetected and unsupported that has led so many like her to the profession? Whatever the case I am so grateful to Suzi for giving her time and voice to this platform to help raise crucial ADHD Awareness amidst a global crisis! Many ADHDers experience Self Sabotage; the most frustrating part is that it can be so hard to spot! So where is the long awaited Season 3?! Well... there isn't gonna be one! :) I've realised that the fear of 'the Season that shall not be named' failing has led me down a path of Self Sabotage so severe I've been stuck for months so instead I'm just ploughing on!Helping me do so is the INCREDIBLE Kim Pierpoint. In the same way this Podcast started over 2 years ago, this is a conversation between two late discovered ADHD women sharing their struggles to raise awareness, and break the stigma in the hope that their experiences help others. Kim is a Midlife Empowerment Coach and Yoga Teacher who provides Self Care Club sessions on Planet ADHDAF...this legend is also a Stand Up Comedian, who will be joining me at Alien Nation London and Flackstock Festival in the ADHDAF Emporium and our first ADHDAF Retreat, the SOLD OUT 'Holistic-ish Weekender'. Many late discovered ADHD adults find it hard to know where to begin when it comes to ADHD Unmasking. In this micro-episode ADHD Coach Meghann Birks gives us her top tip to help unpick those negative beliefs we've accumulated to help us find our authentic selves. I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Meghann on her amazing Podcast: Sisters in Stoke and we've been in semi constant contact ever since. This Canadian LEGEND lives in Melbourne and she's all heart, humour and wisdom. Meghann invites us all to ''f**k around and find out!"We go on a little side-quest about internalised mysogyny, beauty standards and body image issues, but somehow Meghann uses her time wizardry to cram her Unmasking knowledge into a short TITBIT episode. I look forward to sharing more from Meghann soon!TW: Contains swearing and some potentially triggering topics including: Body Image Struggles, Self crticism, internalised misogyny, the patriarchy, beauty standards and unhealthy ideas about weight. But only to highlight the toxicity of all of the above! SELF DIAGNOSIS IS VALID AND YOU ARE ENOUGH! If you are in need of support YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
