Christmas has come and gone, but there are still some great holiday-related songs that we haven’t played yet, so just like the turkey taking up space in your fridge, it’s time to clear out these leftovers and do something with them! This is also one of our annual holiday marathon episodes, where everyone sensible stays home and takes a break from radio, but I’ve never been accused of being sensible, so instead of the usual 2 hours, this show runs for 5! That gives us plenty of time to look back at the year that was, and play a whole bunch of the best music, concerts, and live guests of 2014!

Ed was around at the start of the rebirth of Canadian theatre in the 1960's and managed to navigate a successful career until his retirement recently. Ed has a great perspective on the relationship between amateur and professional theatre and how groups like the Sunparlour Players and Lond Little Theatre helped to launch his career in the 1970's. We also talk about the meetings in Frances Dafoe's basement and how they spawned the Associated Designers of Canada. Ed also recounts the story of Jack Shapira and his conviction of embezzlement at the Rainbow Stage. I have gone over the press clippings, one which is found in the links below, and all of what we talked about though it may sound just a little bit like gossip occurred as Ed told it, so rest assured, we are not making this stuff up! A bit more on the apocryphal side is my telling of a controversial set design that I attribute to Michael Levine at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Hard as I try, I could not find reference to it online, so I may indeed have my facts all backwards - if you listen and know the real story let me know and I will post an update!
It’s Bad Thursday, and we’re off to see Sunparlour Players tonight, so a bit of an abbreviated episode. A look back at a great Bad Thursday from our past, and a look ahead to this weekend’s Record Store Day!

It’s a good news/bad news kind of day. First the good! One of the most electrifying live bands in Canada, Sunparlour Players return to Winnipeg this week after a bit of a wait, so we celebrate with some of their amazing songs and a chat with Andrew Penner, one half of this truly dynamic duo. The bad news this week, is that we had to say goodbye to the great Jesse Winchester. The man’s name wasn’t nearly well enough known, but his amazing legacy of songs and performances proves that he had a larger impact than many would even realize. A heartfelt tribute to this great songwriter, performer, and person is definitely in order.

The new NQ Arbuckle album is on its way, so we see what we think. We’ve also got a new one from Whitehorse that’s got us in the mood to parlez francais (or something like that.) Sunparlour Players and New Country Rehab are coming up, and Del Barber’s doing release shows. Phew, that’s a show!

A couple of long awaited new releases to kick off the show, from Ridley Bent and Sunparlour Players. We also got the Folk Fest lineup and the Junofest schedule this week, so plenty to chat about there. Lastly, there are a couple of great shows coming up this week, including the two night CD release for Del Barber’s new one, Prairieography!

Celebrating great live music, including the battle between Ron Hynes and Old Man Luedecke/Jordie Lane, and the return of Peter Cash & Skydiggers! Other good stuff, too. Just listen.

Anybody feel that 6.7 magnitude earthquake today? Was centered off the coast of Vancouver Island, doesn't appear to have caused damage or injury.Tonight's live guests in the CiTR studios were Allen Forrister and Chris Ronald. They played some tunes and chatted about Takin' Turns at the Prophouse. This monthly series takes place at the Prophouse in East Van. takinturns.caAfter that I had a live phone chat with Andrew Penner of Toronto duo The Sunparlour Players. They do a great live show and will be back in Vancouver April 26.Thanks for listening and please say hi when you get a chance: folkoasis@gmail.comthanks/merci,val
Pre-recorded today, but we’ve got plenty of great upcoming shows to talk about, including the return of CR Avery, the long-awaited return of Matt Mays, and a show tonight featuring one of our favourites, Sunparlour Players! The version of this show that aired on UMFM contained an interview with Andrew & Rosie of Sunparlour Players, so the last half hour of this podcast is a download exclusive.

Lots of great music to be thankful for today, with a whole lot of great new releases, and an extended preview of this week’s Sunparlour Players show at the West End!

It’s a "new music and upcoming shows" kind of day, with plenty of both.

Tonight there’s a can’t miss show going on at the West End, so we’re pre-recorded. Tonight’s concert features two great bands who have visited us in the past for some conversation and live performances. Those were great sessions, worthy of reviewing while we dash off to see the concert tonight. So, we revisit classic live sessions with The Wooden Sky (recorded in February, 2010) and The Sunparlour Players (recorde in November, 2009).

We’ve got a whole lot of great new music tonight, and a special Stones tribute set in honour of tonight’s show by Pegger’s Banquet at the West End.

We gots lots goin’ on today, including previews of some of the best shows coming up this week (and there are plenty), including Rose Cousins, who joins us on the telephone today to chat about her fine new album and upcoming debut at the West End Cultural Centre. We’re also celebrating Nick Lowe’s birthday (whenever it might be) and looking at the lineup for this year’s Winnipeg Folk Festival, which was announced this weekend.

One of our favourite bands, Sunparlour Players, released a new record this week, and it’s a gem. That led us off into previewing some other great roots rockin’ bands who return to town soon. We’ve got a few classics and a birthday song to end off the show.
It’s our 400th episode, and that seems like a milestone worthy of a bit of a look back at what we’ve accomplished (and screwed up) over the course of 9 years and more than 800 hours on air. We took a trip back to episode #1 and covered a lot of the great memories that have happened along the way.

Have yourself a very Merry Boxing Day with the first of our year-end, best-of shows. We look at some notable releases and events from the past year. And, since Christmas is a time of excess, we stretch out a bit and go for a good 3 ½ hours!

Today we got off to a rather rockin’ start, before heading into show previews, new releases, and just plain good stuff. We ended off with a celebration of the season, with some autumn songs!

We’re back, live, in-studio at long last, and boy, have we got a backlog of great new music to show off, including new ones from Leeroy Stagger, Luke Doucet, Ray Lamontagne, and more! We’ve also got tales from Edmonton Folk Fest, Trout Forest, and info on some upcoming shows as well!

Special guest co-host Elysha joins us today for some extra fun & festivities. We played some fetive songs, some requests, some of our favourites, and whatever else came to mind. We also had the official phone-in poll to settle the debate about "Canada Day/Toronto," no matter what that other guy says.

We're on a roll with great guests as of late, and this week is certainly no exception. First up, a chat with probably the most important songwriter in my life, Ron Hawkins of The Lowest of the Low. He's coming to town opening up for Billy Bragg, and he's got a heck of a great new album to play for us, so we'll chat about the past, present, and future. As if that weren't enough, joining us live in studio is a band we'd never tell to go home, Sunparlour Players. They are without a doubt one of this country's best live acts, and it won't be long before they get the huge following they so rightly deserve. This week we'll prove that we knew them "back when..."

You know, as much as we like to complain about Winnipeg sometimes, it seems that the good shows just keep on coming. This week we feature the Michael Johnston concert at my house, Matthew de Zoete, Joshua Cockerill, Vic Chesnutt & Nathan, Sunparlour Players, and more! We previewed them all, and still had time for some classics and a little bit of the pop music.

Some new music to start us off, some of which is wonderful and some that makes me wonder... a couple of history lessons about a couple of late greats, Mickey Newbury and Tom Evans, and a bunch of random greats thrown in on a whim, just the way we like it.

It's part 2 of our official Winnipeg Folk Festival preview as our old pal JP Hoe drops by the studio for the first time in a long time to play us some new tunes and debut his long awaited full length CD. Also on the show some exciting new releases and a look ahead at the jam packed concert schedule for Canada Day, featuring the first local appearance by the Drive-By Truckers and the return of one of my favourite live bands Sunparlour Players.
