Watch on Philo! - Philo.tv/DTHThe movie kicks off with Coach Bombay working a mission for the Impossible Missions Force—IMF, if you will. He's the guy in the chair while Agent Ethan Hunt is out in the field, getting important information from a target and then killing him—because sometimes, you gotta. We then meet Jim Phillips, Ethan's boss at the IMF. He receives the intel that Ethan retrieved. The team comes together to plan their next mission, and it's a big one. An agent named Alexander has gone rogue and plans to steal a list of all undercover agents to sell to a buyer. The mission seems to be going according to plan. After Alexander puts the list on a floppy disk, everything goes south. The agents begin getting killed—first Coach Bombay, then Jim Phillips. Even Ethan's wife, Claire, is killed. To make matters worse, when Ethan finds Alexander, he's already dead, and there's nothing in his pocket. In a haze, Ethan contacts the IMF and ends up meeting with the director, Eugene. Eugene explains that the entire mission was a decoy. Apparently, there's an arms dealer known as “Max,” and the operation to steal the list was part of a mission called Job 314. Everyone was supposed to die. Eugene is suspicious of Ethan—especially since $120,000 mysteriously appeared in Ethan's bank account. Realizing he's in trouble, Ethan uses a piece of explosive gum (courtesy of Coach Bombay) to blow his way out and escape.Ethan starts doing some research and reads the Bible, finding Job 3:14. He begins sending coded emails to every address he thinks could belong to Max.He's shocked when Claire shows up alive. Apparently, Jim warned her just before his death that the mission was compromised, so she faked her death to escape.Ethan eventually gets a reply from Max with instructions on when to meet. He's picked up in a car and taken to her—turns out Max is a woman. Ethan tells her the list she has is fake. She doesn't believe him, but he warns her that inserting it will trigger a tracking device. When it turns out he's telling the truth, Ethan offers her the real list in exchange for $10 million and the identity of the mole behind Job 314.Max agrees and gives Ethan a $150,000 cash advance, which he uses to assemble a team of blacklisted agents, including computer expert Luther and pilot Franz. The new team begins planning an elaborate mission to break into the CIA at Langley. In an absolutely iconic scene, Ethan is lowered from the ceiling to avoid pressure sensors and successfully steals the real list on a disc.Back at the safe house, Franz tries to take the disc, but Ethan pulls off some sleight of hand and confuses him. He decides to trust Luther with the real disc.Ethan learns that Eugene has arrested his parents. He calls him from a payphone and, after hanging up, sees Jim Phillips—somehow still alive. Jim claims that Eugene is the mole. However, Ethan has already figured out that Jim is the traitor after realizing the Bible he used to look up the Job verse was stolen from the Drake Hotel in Chicago—where Jim once said he was stationed.Ethan pretends to believe Jim and arranges a meeting with Max on a train to exchange the list. On the train, Ethan tells Max the list is beneath her seat, and she tells him where the money is stashed. Meanwhile, Luther jams the signal so she can't upload the list.Claire goes to collect her share from Jim but realizes too late that he's actually Ethan in disguise. When the real Jim shows up and pulls a gun to take the money, Ethan streams the confrontation live to Eugene, exposing Jim as the mole.Jim kills Claire and climbs to the roof of the train, trying to escape in a helicopter piloted by Franz. But Ethan also gets on the roof, hooks the chopper to the train, and forces it into a tunnel. Miraculously, it doesn't crash immediately. Ethan jumps onto the helicopter and uses another piece of explosive gum to blow it up—of course, surviving the blast.Eugene arrives, arrests Max, and recovers the list.Ethan and Luther are reinstated in the IMF, though Ethan isn't sure if he wants to return. On the flight home, a flight attendant approaches him and covertly offers a new mission—this time as team leader.

Have you heard of a book called 'The Subtle Art of Not Giving A F*ck'? I'm guessing you have since it's sold, uh, 16 million copies since it came out in 2016. There hadn't been a non-fiction book that big and disruptive in a long, long time… Mark's meteoric success is the product of a giant mind which has mastered the art of taking the biggest, densest books on the planet and then simmering them down into simple, profanity-laced models and stories that hit you like a ton of bricks. The world is so loud! So busy. So full. Everything is screaming at us to buy this, buy that, do this, do that. You know what we need in this wild world? Guides! Clear voices. People who give us simple and practical advice that we can follow and put into place… Mark Manson is one of those guides for me and millions of others. I follow his popular YouTube channel and read his simple and punchy tweets. In this classic 3 Books chapter, in Mark's cramped hotel room at The Drake Hotel in Toronto, we go deep on building trust in an era of clutter, why Mark poo-poos self-help gurus, what is the root problem with the 'advertising model,' why Mark played video games for months after the success of his book, what his writing routines and principles are, and, of course, his 3 most formative books… Let's flip the page back to Chapter 28 now...

I first met Stefanie Purificati at Nunavut Music Week in 2019 during the trip of a lifetime up north to work with Indigenous artists. There were so many special connections made on that trip; both for the artists and the industry professionals involved. Stef made me laugh over dinner one of the first evenings at the legion and we've been seeing each other at shows in Toronto ever since! Stefanie is an agent and music industry veteran who got her start as the in-house talent buyer at the Drake Hotel. She began her career as an agent in 2010 and has just recently joined The Feldman Agency (who represent bands like Feist, Orville Peck, Shania Twain, The Beaches & more, peep the roster HERE). This is why I was so incredibly excited to sit down and speak with Poet/Theatre Performer/Writing Coach, David Silverberg, to gain some knowledge and insight into not only his wirting process but how those who are intersted in getting started on their writing journey can do so with as little negaitivity and open mind as possible! David reminds us that writing isn't supposed to be “easy”. So, maybe we should stop wating for it to become easy and just start. A little about David: David Silverberg is a published poet, spoken word performer, theatre artist and writing coach. He is the former artistic director of Toronto Poetry Slam, a competitive poetry series that takes place at The Drake Hotel, and is the author of two poetry collections. His first solo show Jewnique debuted in 2018 and his second solo show debuted in March. Before & After is a tender and powerful story about his father's having OCD, a mental condition that is poorly portrayed in media. He has performed his poetry and theatre work across Canada and in New York, Paris and London in the UK. In 2021, he launched a coaching business for creative and non-fiction writers as well as a monthly newsletter Become a Better Writer. Those who considered themselves financially savvy in Chicago in the early 1920s wanted in on one investment: the Bayano River Syndicate. It was an exclusive investment, and centered around oil-rich lands in Panama. And a mild-mannered, balding, and bespectacled lawyer named Leo Koretz was the guy who held the key to investing in it. But Koretz wasn't who he seemed, and neither were his oil fields in Panama.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we're asking an existential question: How can you be a good person? New York Magazine recently published an editorial package on how to behave, declaring 194 rules on how to "tip, text, ghost, host and politely deal with strangers." Social anxieties—and figuring out how to fit in and act right—are nothing new for Jews. So Avi and Phoebe, recording in-person at the Drake Hotel, dive in and discuss why rules matter, Hey Alma's own list of Jewish rules for living today, how this all relates to Jewish law and why this topic is having a moment. Stay tuned for another great episode, and we are looking for forward to another amazing year you all! Please hit the Subscribe/Follow Button Click here to go to Joe's book Click here to go to Jens Poshmark Closet Click here to go to our Website In this episode, we talk about New Year's traditions and some ghost stories. A few stories Lady in Red Phantom The Celebration of The Drake Hotel's Grand Opening on New Year's Eve Photo Credit: Windy City Ghosts On New Year's Eve of 1920, the Drake Hotel celebrated its opening night with much glamour and tinsel! It was both magnificent and tragic. It was magnificent because the Drake was to be one of Chicago's most beautiful and celebrated hotels. It was tragic because, according to legend, it was the night the “Woman in Red” ended her life. On this day, a man and his fiancée (who was clad in a brilliant red silk gown) attended the gala held in the Drake's Gold Coast Room. The man stepped away and did not return, so his fiancée went looking for him. She found him, enthralled by another woman, in the Palm Court parlor. The devastated woman climbed to the roof and jumped to her death. Since then, guests at the Drake have reported seeing her apparition in the Gold Coast Room, Palm Court, and on the top 10th floor as well as the roof. Condemned to replay her final night, her restless soul wanders attempting to find peace with the final tragic chapter of her life. In addition to spontaneous phantom appearances in her red garment, workers and guests also get a creepy and uncomfortable feeling in the ballroom. The Phantoms of the Inn The Inn on Main Street Bed and Breakfast, located in Weaverville, North Carolina, is indeed very spirited on New Year's Eve! Although the innkeepers of this historic bed and breakfast will not admit it's haunted, there's no denying the tales told by guests or staff verifying the house's spectral activity. Phantoms lurk in its spaces, and mysteriously, they have a special preference for making an appearance on New Year's Eve. Strangely, on New Year's Eve, guests frequently hear pictures fall off the wall multiple times, never finding physical evidence of them actually falling. Is this a residual haunting or just too much celebratory champagne? In addition, many also hear the back door open and then close. Yet, again, no mortal is ever discovered entering the building. The house was built 100 years ago by a doctor. The innkeepers know of at least one person has died in the house. A bloodstain remains under the tiles in a bathroom that was once part of his operating room and lab. The stain was never able to be removed, even with sanding, resorting to it being hidden with tile. Could any of these haunts have a relevance to the celebrations of a New Year? Do not hesitate from staying at this inn. On the other hand, be fascinated for the opportunity! Innkeepers have been told all the energy here is good, claiming they've never lost a guest to the inn's 10 identified phantoms including men, women, children, Native Americans, and even a white dog. But again, they will never confirm their presence. Really? The Haunted Agora Theatre A holiday ghost hunt on December 31st was planned to seek the legends that haunt this historical venue. The entity they sought most was the ominous man in the yellow raincoat. During the investigation, one of the ghost hunters felt a splash of cold water on the back of her legs. Upon reaching down to find the source, she found that her tights were dry and there was no one behind her who could have spilled liquid. Still, a strange wet sensation remained tingling and continued where she felt “water” minutes after the encounter. This, in fact, is a common experience, all attributed to the man in the yellow raincoat. The iconic apparition is not shy! He has been seen on the stage, on the catwalk, and in several of the viewing balconies. Apparently, he is interactive with spectators, often casting “disciplinary looks” when the audience is naughty. Other experiences that many have encountered include doors opening on their own and the appearance of what looks like bloodstains in the basement. The Agora Theatre and Ballroom has seen the performances of Elvis and The Beatles and is also home to some spirits. Besides the man in the yellow raincoat, many apparitions have been seen. A psychic once did an investigation and said the spirit's name was John.

Paul Sullivan has a way with words, some that have angered players and management during his 40 years at the Chicago Tribune. Now the caretaker of the prestigious and historic “In the Wake of the News column” Sullivan is still writing mostly about baseball, a beat he covered for some 30 years. He's seen a lot of bad baseball in Chicago but also chronicled the The White Sox first World Series championship in 88 years and the Cubs in 108! “Sully” as he's best known has had his run-ins with such renowned players as Sammy Sosa and Frank Thomas and once had the Cubs temperamental pitcher Carlos Zambrano offer a Milwaukee baseball security person $100,000 to kill him!All in a days work or in this case, a sterling career, one that has seen Sullivan cop the Illinois sportswriter of the year award 3 times and the prestigious Ring Lardner award for excellence in sports journalism. During this very entertaining podcast, Sullivan reveals how he was once a bellboy at the famous Drake Hotel in Chicago where he carried bags for Bull Cosby and was an extra in the movie, Continental Divide with John Belushi, parts of which were shot at the Drake. To everyone's surprise, one police lieutenant suspects Patricia of being the killer and believes that the mysterious “woman in black” did not exist. However, other evidence seems to point to the crime being a botched robbery attempt committed by one of the hotel clerks, but in the end, no one is ever charged with the murder. In preparation for our appearance at the True Crime Podcast Festival this coming weekend, this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” covers one of Chicago's most bizarre unsolved murders.
