For this episode we're joined – all the way from L.A. – by special guest Bob Merlis. The former head of publicity at Warner-Reprise Records in Burbank talks us through his musical odyssey from his Brooklyn childhood to his continuing PR work for the likes of ZZ Top and Carlene Carter. We hear about Bob's start at Record World in late '60s New York and the early '70s pieces he wrote for that trade publication and for Warners' short-lived Words & Music. Our guest then talks about his brief stints at RCA and Albert Grossman's Bearsville Records before touching on key acts and moments in the nearly three decades he spent in Burbank: Little Feat's Lowell George, Jerry Wexler producing Etta James and Warners president Joe Smith roasting the infamous Morris Levy. Clips from Dave Zimmer's 1988 audio interview with Neil Young prompt discussion of that quintessential Reprise artist (and his comrades in CSNY). After Mark quotes from pieces about Elektra Records dropping the MC5 and free-improv guitarist Derek Bailey, Jasper talks us out with reflections on the musical passions of footballer Rio Ferdinand and Houston rapper Chamillionaire. Many thanks to special guest Bob Merlis. For info on Bob's PR work, visit https://mfhpr.com/m-f-h-at-20. This week, musicians born into powerful family musical traditions recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, commentary from some of these living legacies. Legacy is something handed down from the past. The tradition of folk music and culture is rooted in legacy. Musical legacies can exist in the form of songs, melodies, musical instruments, styles of playing, and sometimes even people. A musician born into a powerful family music tradition may find themselves a living connection to that legacy for thousands of fans. On this week's show, we feature some of these living legacies: Amy Helm; A.J. Croce; Carlene Carter; Dale Jett; and Thom Bresh. Amy Helm is an American singer-songwriter and daughter of The Band drummer Levon Helm and singer Libby Titus. She is a past member of the Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble Band and Ollabelle, as well as her own touring band. Born in Woodstock, New York, Amy spent her childhood between Woodstock, Los Angeles, and New York City. She attended Trinity High School where she studied jazz with Dr. Aaron Bell, while singing in bands, and playing in New York City clubs and bars. A lifelong musician and music-lover, Helm's parents guided her training and influences. She later became a founding member of the alt-country collective Ollabelle and served as a backing musician in her father's Midnight Ramble Band. Adrian James "A.J." Croce is an American singer-songwriter. He is the son of singer-songwriters Jim Croce and Ingrid Croce. A.J. Croce has been inextricably linked to a version of his own story by virtue of his name. He's experienced a lifetime of comparisons to a father he lost at age two, whose music bears little resemblance to his own output yet still serves as a reference point despite the years that have passed and the many iconic mentors who have stepped in to offer their counsel, creativity, and endorsement throughout his long career. Carlene Carter is an American country singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter of the famed Carter Family and her first husband, Carl Smith. She became the step-daughter of Johnny Cash. Between 1978 and the present, Carter has recorded twelve albums, primarily on major labels. In the same timespan, she has released more than twenty singles, including three No. 3-peaking hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Dale Jett is a proud bearer of the Carter Family musical legacy. Son of Jeanette Carter and grandson of A.P. and Sara Carter, Dale performs songs from the Carter Family song book with his group “Hello Stranger.” With his wife Teresa on bass, and Oscar Harris on auto harp, Dale keeps the music of his family tradition alive and relevant. Thom Bresh has led an incredible, multi-faceted life in the entertainment business. To start, his birth father is guitar royalty, Merle Travis. Thom was raised in California during the golden age of television and worked as a stuntman/actor during his youth. He went on to become one of the premier practitioners of his fathers “thumbpicking” style of guitar. Harnessing a quick wit and an equally quick set of ten fingers, there is nothing like a Thom Bresh performance. In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers an archival recording of country music legacy and our very own Mark Jones performing in the banjo style of his famous father Grandpa Jones the tune “Mountain Whippoorwill,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In this week's guest host segment, renowned traditional folk musician, writer, and step dancer Aubrey Atwater describes therapeutic music and her role as a musician in a pediatric hospital.

Bassist, singer and songwriter Richard “RW” Grigsby, has logged several lifetimes on the road, and his early rock and roll roots (Rome, GA near the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains) burst out like another famous Richard from Georgia on “Road Scholar,” his story of a musician who has spent too much time on the road, working for too little pay. It's sung by Red's Blues drummer Tim Wilbur, a pro's pro (2017 Sacramento Music Awards and Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame member), who brought creative percussion ideas -- maracas AND the entire group thigh-slapping percussion. “We sat in chairs in a circle and slapped our thighs at certain points in the song to add accent,” laughs Beth. “Jackknifed” (co-authored with fellow road warrior Mark Hummel) continues the road theme with bio notes from their Golden State-Lone Star Blues Revue adventures. RW played with Carlene Carter, Gary Primich, Mike Morgan & The Crawl, Finger Taylor, Mark Hummel's Golden State Lone Star Revue w/Anson Funderburgh & Little Charlie, JamesCotton & all the Harmonica Blowouts since 2008-2019( Magic, Lee Oskar, Kim Wilson, Billy Boy, Jason Ricci, Carey Bell, Lazy Lester, Estrin, John Primer, Duke, Billy Flynn, Elvin, Gravenities, Ron Thompson, Harman, Rod Piazza & many others) 2014 Grammy-nominated and Blues Music Award (BMA) winner bassist RW Grigsby has been playing since he was 14 years old and began his professional career when still a teenager.  He's toured the U.S., Canada and Europe since the '80s, and currently juggles playing with Red's Blues, Mark Hummel & the Blues Survivors and The Golden State/Lone Star Blues Revue. He played and recorded with Texas blues stars Gary Primich and Black Top Records' Mike Morgan and the Crawl in the 1990s.  RW is the bassist on the 2014 Grammy-nominated and BMA-winning CD, Remembering Little Walter. He was nominated for a BMA “Best Bassist” Award in 2017 and was inducted into the Sacramento Blues Society Hall of Fame in 2018.

Time for the Other Sisters and Daughters to get an episode. June Carter is middle Sister to Helen and Anita, two powerhouse musicians and singers who often get overlooked in the Carter / Cash Legacy. Helen was considered the best all around musician in the group and often handled all the vocal and harmony arrangements for her mom and sisters. Anita was often considered to be the best pure singer of the three sisters and had hit duets with Hank Snow and Waylon Jennings. Carlene Carter, June's daughter, had a great run through the 80's and 90's with her own records and a fine duet with Dave Edmunds. Rosanne Cash has had a four decades long career that puts her among the finest songwriters and singers of her generation. Timeless with Julie Hartman

Rock n Roll Hall of Famer Dion joins me today.  Bruce Springsteen described him as “the link between Sinatra and rock 'n' roll.”  In 1958, Bronx-born Dion burst onto the scene with Dion and the Belmonts and had several hits.  After going solo in 1961 he had a #1 record with "Runaround Sue" followed by "The Wanderer.”  Dion DiMucci has since ventured into Christian music, the blues, and most recently recorded "American Hero" with Carlene Carter …and soon, an album "Girlfriends."  Later this year, the musical production of Dion's life, “The Wanderer,” is scheduled to open on Broadway. The Wanderer is two minutes, fifty-one seconds of pure swagger. Imagine my surprise when I read a quote from Dion where he said it was essentially a sad song, and that the one of lyrics demonstrated the singer's existential crisis: “with my two fists of iron - ( I always thought it was “two fifths of wine”) - and I'm goin' nowhere!”   Dion is a Buddha of self-reflection.He has always been my rock and roll Sherpa since the age of 8 when my friend Larry Bader and I would play “Dion and Chubby Checker on tour”. Larry was Dion and I was Chubby (‘cause I was) - we'd put on the records and lip-sync our act. The Beatles took over as an obsession a couple of years later, but Dion was never far from my thoughts: he kept coming back through the decades: in the late 60s as a folky warrior for peace; playing coliseumson the oldie circuit in the 70s; in the 80s and 90s as a grizzled, born again survivor; then, producing a string of hit blues albums in the 2000s,  And, he's still at it, sounding better than humanly possible. At the age of 84 he's producing some of his best work ever.- just listen to American Hero, his latest with Carlene Carter, and genuflect. The long delayed Norton release of “Kickin' Child”, an album he recorded for Columbia that was scrubbed, posits the notion that it was perhaps Dion, before Dylan, who first took folk music electric with the master producer Tom Wilson.  He's always been in my life, and I'm so grateful for that. If he had taken that doomed plane ride with Buddy Holly in ‘59… just think about what would have been lost.

The music of Caleb Caudle was originally recommended to me some years ago by music loving friends that know whereof they speak. Following their suggestions usually yields solid gold. Caleb was recently in Kansas City in 2022 on tour in support of Hayes Carll and then solo to promote his latest critically acclaimed album, Forsythia. He was also finally able to personally promote his album, Better Hurry Up, that was way laid by the Covid-19 pandemic. Forsythia is a portrait of Caleb at his most solitary and reflective. Thematically, it meets anticipation for the unknown future with nostalgia for the past, and reconciles both with meditation in the present. The album, recorded at Cash Cabin and produced by John Carter Cash, features acclaimed session players Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Dennis Crouch and Fred Eltringham, and the vocal talents of Carlene Carter, Elizabeth Cook and Sarah Peasall McGuffey. On his last release, Better Hurry Up, Caudle found himself feeling like time was moving too fast. By early 2020, with a new home base in Nashville, a few years of sobriety under his belt and the release of his best album yet imminent, Caudle was prepared for the next phase of his career. But a few days before Better Hurry Up came out, a devastating tornado ripped through Nashville; a week later, just before he was set to depart for a lengthy tour, the world went into lockdown. The couple moved back to the mountains of North Carolina for the duration of the pandemic, where he spent most of his time in the woods– hiking, observing, thinking and writing. Caleb took some time to call into the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show from the road on his way to Kansas City for a show. Enjoy my on air conversation with the very talented songcrafter….Caleb Caudle.

Nick Lowe [00:28] "My Heart Hurts" Nick the Knife Columbia FC 37932 1982 Nick's first outing after the dissolution of Rockpile. Another catchy tune, co-written with Carlene Carter. Such a great duo. Nicolette Larson [03:07] "Lotta Love" Nicolette Warner Bros. Records BSK 3243 1978 Fresh off assisting Neil Young with American Stars 'n Bars, Nicolette unleashes some peak 70s adult-oriented rock with this side one, track one Young cover for her debut album. Shana Cleveland [06:14] "Face of the Sun" Night of the Worm Moon Hardly Art HAR 111 2019 Some excellent cinematic Western feels for sure. Besides being an excellent musician, Shana makes my very favorite calendar (https://shanacleveland.bandcamp.com/merch). The Oscar Peterson Trio [09:44] "I Got It Bad (and That Ain't Good)" Night Train Verve Records V6-8538 1963 An album of excellently curated standards, with this being no exception. The Beatles [27:57] "Don't Let Me Down" 1967-1970 Apple Records SKBO 3404 1973 What? Just because many of the folks who listen to Vinyl-O-Matic have watched all 7 hours and 48 minutes of Get Back doesn't mean we can't still enjoy this song. I mean really, how awesome was Billy Preston? Hillsboro High School Eagle Band [33:20] "Streets of Laredo" 1973-1974 Sweepstakes Reelsound Recording Company RSF-7417 1974 Ah the classic rake's lament. Eurythmics [34:49] "Sexcrime (1984)" 1984 (For the Love of Big Brother) RCA ABL1-5349 1984 A doubleplusgood track from this soundtrack scored by Dave Stewart. Prince [38:49] "Little Red Corvette" 1999 Warner Bros. Records 9 23720-1 1982 Perhaps one of the best first sides of any double album out there. Hard to choose just one track from the album, but "Little Red Corvette" will always be my fave. Fun fact: "Little Red Corvette" was partially the inspiration for Stevie Nick's 1983 hit "Stand Back" (https://youtu.be/gwS9BIqbffU), and in fact His Pupleness can be heard playing synth on the choruses. Los Campesinos! [43:46] "What Death Leaves Behind" No Blues Turnstile TS007LP 2013 The lead single from Los Campesinos! excellent 2013 album, on lovely hot pink vinyl. The Beach Boys - TM Song (1976) I am hoping The Beach Boys knew that this song was so terrible that no DJ in his right mind would offer up anything but the "money" song, which, in this case, was a nearly total soul-evisceration of Chuck Berry's wonderful hit. The BB version went to #8, but that was on the heels of their surprisingly popular Endless Summer compilation from the previous year. Even with the little play that starts the song, the whole thing lasted a mercifully short 1:35. I hate BB apologists.  The Beach Boys - Transcendental Meditation (1968) Charles Lloyd and The Beach Boys - TM (Transcendental Meditation) (1972) Backing vocals by Al Jardine, Billy Hinsche (a friend of the band from way back, who was in Dino, Desi, and Billy) Carl Wilson, Michael Love, and Pamela Polland.  Ringo Starr - Back Off Boogaloo (Stop and Smell The Roses Version) (1981) Albert Desalvo - Strangler in the Night (1967) Sleeve reads "...These are my thoughts, feelings and emotions." Albert H. DeSalvo. Astor paid the real serial killer Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler) fifty bucks for the rights to Strangler In The Night which was then ghostwritten and recorded by The Bugs adding the voice of former Boston WEEI reporter Dick Levitan, who actually interviewed DeSalvo a couple of times. Muhammad Ali - Ali's Elusive Dream (1976) If Dan was here, he'd say this was Ali's Rubber Soul.  Wolfman Jack - Free Shots (1975) Cautionary tale about VD. Who was Debbie Sabusawa?  Mike Douglas - Have a Nice Trip (1968) Cautionary tale about drugs.  Reuben Ware - The Fate Of Mary Jo Kopechne (1971) From Wikipedia: On July 18, 1969, Kopechne attended a party on Chappaquiddick Island, off the east coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. The celebration was in honor of the dedicated work of the Boiler Room Girls and was the fourth such reunion of Robert Kennedy campaign workers. Robert's surviving brother, Senator Ted Kennedy, was there. Kopechne reportedly left the party with Kennedy at 11:15 p.m.; according to his account, he had offered to drive her to catch the last ferry back to Edgartown, where she was staying. She did not tell her close friends at the party that she was leaving, and she left her purse and keys behind. Kennedy drove the 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 off a narrow, unlit bridge, which lacked guardrails and was not on the route to Edgartown. The vehicle landed on its roof in Poucha Pond. Kennedy extricated himself from the vehicle and survived, but neglected to inform authorities until the next day of the accident and his inability to rescue Kopechne. Assistant Medical examiner Donald Mills signed a death certificate listing cause of death as accidental drowning. A private funeral for Kopechne was held at St. Vincent's Roman Catholic Church in Plymouth, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1969. The service was attended by Kennedy, his wife Joan, his sister-in-law Ethel, and hundreds of onlookers. Kopechne was buried in St. Vincent's Cemetery in Larksville, Pennsylvania, in the parish cemetery on the side of Larksville Mountain. She was among the fifth generation of her family interred in that cemetery. The exact time and cause of Kopechne's death is not positively known, due to conflicting witness testimony at the January 1970 inquest, and lack of an autopsy. Kennedy claimed the accident occurred shortly after he left the party at 11:15 p.m. on July 18. But part-time Deputy Sheriff Christopher "Huck" Look testified that he saw Kennedy's car, with Kopechne and Kennedy in it, around 12:40 a.m. on July 19. John Farrar, the fire rescue captain who retrieved the body on July 19, testified he believed that Kopechne stayed alive for up to half an hour in an air pocket, and ultimately suffocated in the submerged vehicle. A petition to exhume the body for autopsy was denied by a Pennsylvania court.  Kennedy failed to report the incident to the authorities until the car and Kopechne's body were discovered the next morning. Kopechne's parents said that they learned of their daughter's death from Kennedy before he informed authorities of his involvement. They learned Kennedy had been the driver from wire press releases sometime later. Melinda Marx - How I Wish You Came (1965) Melinda Marx was the daughter of Groucho Marx.  Michael Chaplin - Restless (1965) He was the son of Charlie Chaplin.  Nino Tempo and April Stevens - Put It Where You Want It (1973) From Buffalo, NY. My home town.  Ray Manzarek - The Whole Thing Started With Rock and Roll (1974) Scott Walker -The Plague (1970) Ike and Tina Turner - Sweet Rhode Island Red (1974) Paul Revere and the Raiders - Swim (1964) The Boones - Please Mister Postman (1974) The Hollies - The Baby (1972) The Royal Guardsmen - Squeaky Vs. The Black Knight (1966) Same catalog number as "Snoopy vs. The Red Baron". This version was issued only in Canada and only for approx. 2 weeks while licensing issues were being worked out using the "Snoopy" name. Art Linkletter - Dear Mom and Dad (1969) Autry Inman with Bob Luman - Ballad of Two Brothers (1968) Frank Lyndon - Fonzie Meets Kotter's Sweathogs (At The School Dance) (1976) Herman Silvers & Cornell Tanassy - Hello Ronnie, Good-Bye Jimmy (1980) James Brown and the J.B.s - Gimme Some Skin (1977) Johnny Cash & Rosey Nix - Father and Daughter (1974) In the 1980 Rolling Stone Record Guide, this album is described as "weird". It's not. It sounds like a gap-filler. Johnny doesn't sound his best here singing this Cat Stevens cover with his daughter, who also cannot seem to sing. She was the daughter of June Carter and her second husband (of three), Edwin "Rip" Nix. I tried to find his football card from his time with the Tennessee Vols, but I don't think football cards were a thing? Edwin and June divorced in 1966. In around 1985, Edwin married Ira Pilkinton.  During her first marriage, to singer Carl Smith, she had a daughter, Rebecca Carlene Smith, professionally known as Carlene Carter, a country musician. Her song "Every Little Thing" appeared on my band "East of Idaho"'s setlist during the first year of our existence. She married Nick Lowe, who I've featured on another episode, and appeared in his wonderfully droll video for "Cruel To Be Kind".  Wilt Chamberlain - That's Easy To Say (1960) The Millennium - There Is Nothing More To Say (1968) Genesis - Apocalypse in 9/8 (1972) The Free Design - Friendly Man (1971) You know I love The Free Design more than almost any group I've discovered on my show. Here are three of their best songs.  The Free Design - Love Me (1971) The Free Design - A Leaf Has Veins (1968)

“Tom Gray and Mark Johnson are the rusty, banged up Cadillacs of the slide guitar, side by side coughing up smoke and spitting backwoods dirt, but unswerving in their precision and singular style.” — Tom Clarke, Hittin' the Note“Icouldn't imagine life without being able to play music,” says Delta Moon's Mark Johnson. “We call ourselves lifers. We will play until we simply can't do it any more.”He and bandmate Tom Gray have been doing it a while now, laying down double slide guitar improvisations that often seem downright telepathic. It has been two decades since they started playing together — Mark on bottleneck slide and Tom on lap steel — first in Tom's studio, and then in clubs, coffee shops and barbecue joints around Atlanta. The name Delta Moon came to Mark on a pilgrimage to Muddy Waters' cabin near Clarksdale, Mississippi, when a brilliant full moon rose over the highway. With the addition of bass and drums Delta Moon quickly gathered a wall-full of local “best” awards. After winning the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in January of 2003, the band went on that year to play the prestigious Montreal Jazz Fest and other festivals, theaters and clubs across America and England. They have worked steadily on the road and in the studio ever since, recording critically acclaimed albums and crisscrossing the United States, Canada and Europe. Bassist Franher Joseph joined Delta Moon as a permanent member in 2007, adding a solid pocket and rich bass vocals.Delta Moon won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2003.The Roots Music Association named lead vocalist Tom Gray Blues 2008 Songwriter of the Year. Tom has long been well known in the music industry as a songwriter, having penned Cyndi Lauper's hit “Money Changes Everything” as well as songs recorded by Manfred Mann, Carlene Carter, Bonnie Bramlett and many others.Delta Moon's music has been featured in television programs on Showtime, Lifetime, the Food Network and more.Delta Moon tours extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe.Delta Moon's 2015 album, Low Down, was named one of the year's best by both Downbeat and Blues Music Magazine.Delta Moon's latest album, Babylon is Falling, came out September 21, 2018.“Great grooves, thought provoking lyrics, infectious hooks, sweet slide guitar work and mountains of superb tone….” — No Depression“Exquisite playing and fine songcraft….” — Living Blues“Delta Moon is deep blues with a fury….

Mark Saunders  in conversation with David Eastaugh Saunders's professional music career started as a drummer playing with Carlene Carter, Johnny Cash's stepdaughter, in 1982. The first time he went into a recording studio with her to record some demos, he was excited by the whole recording process and after the stint with Carlene finished in 1984, he landed a job as an assistant at West Side Studios, London working with production pair Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley who produced for Madness, Dexys Midnight Runners, Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, Elvis Costello and later Bush. In 1985, Saunders engineered the hit record "Dancing in the Street" by David Bowie and Mick Jagger. A year later, he became a freelance engineer and was discovered by Rhythm King, a label at the forefront of British dance music. Working on a couple of Bomb the Bass mixes led to co-producing Neneh Cherry's No. 2 US Billboard hit "Buffalo Stance" and the subsequent seminal multi-platinum album Raw Like Sushi. Following this, he worked on many pop/dance acts including Erasure, Depeche Mode, Lisa Stansfield and Yazz as well as Ian McCulloch, the Mission UK, the Farm, the Heart Throbs, Texas and the Sugarcubes. Robert Smith of the Cure employed Saunders's radio friendly skills to mix all singles from the album Disintegration. "Lovesong" became the Cure's highest charting single, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Saunders went on to work on further Cure albums - UK No. 1 Wish, Mixed Up and Wild Mood Swings.

Escuchar audio

His career is unfolding on three fronts: As a session and touring guitarist, he's worked with Billy Gibbons, Lucinda Williams, Fiona Apple, John Legend, Randy Newman, Lana Del Ray, the Avett Brothers, Vulfpeck, Carlene Carter, and Norah Jones. He's also received two Grammy nominations for Producer of the Year, first for overseeing Alabama Shakes' breakthroughs album Sound and Color in 2015, and again in 2017 for Perfume Genius's No Shape album. He's also created four acclaimed solo albums. Blake's playing is steeped in traditional folk, blues, and ethnic music, but it's seldom retro. He inevitably twists his influences into startling new configurations that feel simultaneously old and new, often employing slide and fretless guitar to stretch the boundaries of intonation and groove. This week, Carter Family legacy, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and country music superstar Carlene Carter recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Also, interviews with this scion of American music royalty. Carlene Carter is an American country singer and songwriter. She is the daughter of June Carter and her first husband, Carl Smith. Between 1978 and the present, Carter has recorded twelve albums, primarily on major labels. In the same timespan, she has released more than twenty singles, including three No. 3-peaking hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. Carlene has always straddled the line between country and rock, following her own path. As a rock singer in the mid-'70s, she became immersed in the new wave before emerging as a new country singer in the late '80s. Through it all, her music has always infused roots music with a nervy, edgy energy. Her mother, June Carter-Cash would frequently take her daughter on Carter Family tours, which meant that Carlene developed a musical interest at an early age. When she was 12, her mother married Johnny Cash. Following the marriage, Carlene and her stepsister, Rosanne Cash, became backup singers in the Carter/Cash touring show. In this week’s “From the Vault” segment, musician, educator, and country music legacy Mark Jones offers a 1978 archival recording of Ozark original Pappy Shorey and his shape note singers performing the hymn “How Beautiful Heaven Must Be,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. Writer, musician, and traditional dancer Aubrey Atwater discusses the surprising origins of yodeling and its appearance in generations of traditional folk and popular music throughout the world with musical examples and her own cultivated insight.

He’s also one of the greatest producers of all times, helming some of the best albums or singles by the likes of Graham Parker & The Rumour, The Damned, Dr. Feelgood, Wreckless Eric, and, of course, Elvis Costello. Not to mention he was once married to Carlene Carter, which made him Johnny and June Carter Cash’s son-in-law! Big props to Belmonts, Curb College of Music for hosting the honest conversation on where women are at in having a chance for equality in music. Recorded live at Columbia Studio A, Cassadee Pope (The Voice and recording artist), Tracy Gershon (artist manager and c0-founder of Change the Conversation), and Leslie Fram (Senior Vice President of Music Strategy for CMT and co-founder of Change the Conversation) all share their feelings on where we are as a community in accepting women as equals in business and in creativity. All three women brought their unique experiences and vocations into the conversation. We start with the purpose of Change the Conversation and the numbers behind the topic at hand. The double standards against women and has it always been like this? Then looking ahead is there a chance for women to not just survive but to truly thrive within music.  Change the Conversation is dedicated to improving the environment for women in music. Their goal is to become obsolete and “to never have this conversation again." In an attempt to turn their frustration into action and help level the playing field, Leslie Fram, Tracy Gershon, and Beverly Keel formed Change the Conversation in late 2014. Cassadee Pope; singer, song-writer, and musician was the lead vocalist of the rock band Hey Monday then embarked on a season of The Voice and became the first female winner. Her debut solo country album, Frame by Frame, was a top 10 Billboard 200 record and it debuted at No. 1 on Top Country Albums, with 43,000 copies sold in its first week. Today she is releasing new music and working on new material. Recently, she's released "One More Red Light" and "Take You Home" that you can download on Spotify or Apple Music. Be sure to go to  for tour dates, merch, and music and follow here @cassadeepope. Leslie Fram serves as Senior Vice President of Music Strategy and Talent for CMT, overseeing all music integration within the CMT brand, including original programs, CMT and music video airplay across all screens. Respected for both her hit intuition and hard-driving passion for music, Fram was the first woman to receive the TJ Martell Award in recognition of outstanding performance in the music industry in 2000 and was presented with the NARAS-Atlanta Chapter Heroes Award for her outstanding contributions to music and the music community.  In 2009, she was honored as a Lifetime Achievement Inductee in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame. She will also be one of the recipients of the very first ‘Innovation In Music’ Awards held June 6th in Nashville.  Leslie currently serves on the Board of the Academy of Country Music, the Recording Academy/ Nashville Chapter, Board of Directors for The Sports Authority, the Nashville Film Festival Music Committee,  and an alum of Leadership Music Class of 2014.  Fram is an avid philanthropist and spokesperson, using her voice to support numerous non-profits and causes. Tracy Gershon is a noted music business professional with a wide-ranging career discovering, nurturing and developing influential talent as an A&R and music publishing executive as well as an artist manager. During her A&R career at Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment, Gershon signed award-winning platinum-seller Miranda Lambert and help guide the careers of Blake Shelton, Randy Travis, Gretchen Wilson, The Wreckers, Faith Hill , Big & Rich and Lori McKenna. As a creative executive at both Sony Music Publishing and EMI Music, she helped to secure hundreds of cuts while working with writers like Harlan Howard, Gretchen Peters, Tom Douglas, Carlene Carter, and The Mavericks. As head of the Nashville office of Warner Music Publishing, she inked award-winning artist Kacey Musgraves. While at Sony Music she served for two years as an on-air judge and associate producer on the USA Network's "Nashville Star." Gershon recently helmed the A&R department at indie label Rounder Records, where she signed or worked with artists as diverse as Blackberry Smoke, Sean McConnell,  and Jerry Douglas. Tracy, in association with Redlight Management, oversees the career of Country artist, Natalie Stovall. Gershon is also consulting the country division for Atlas Music publishing, as well as running One Riot Music. Gershon has been the recipient of numerous awards, including Nashville Business Journal's "Woman in Music City" in 2015, 2016 ,2017, and 2018 as well as Nashville Lifestyles Magazine's top ten "Women In Business" award in 2016.

Welcome to Aquarium Drunkard’s Transmissions Podcast, a recurring series of conversations with songwriters, authors, and creators about what drives their art. We’re proud to share an interview with Nick Lowe this week. AD’s Jason P. Woodbury talked with the producer, songwriter, and performer, who’s made records with Elvis Costello, the Damned, Squeeze, Johnny Cash, and dozens more, and penned classic songs like “What’s So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding,” “Cruel to Be Kind,” “I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass,” “The Beast in Me,” and many others. On Friday, July 14th, Yep Roc Records releases the first in a series of reissues documenting Lowe’s ’80s era, beginning with 1982’s Nick the Knife and 1983’s The Abominable Showman, with the rest of his catalog through 1990’s Party of One coming throughout 2017. The period saw the British rocker expanding his stylistic palette, exploring the ties between skiffle and country music. While his edges softened some sonically, his lyrical focus remained sharp, and songs like “All Men Are Liars” and “My Heart Hurt” point to the kind of songs that would bolster his late career renaissance in the early 2000s and up to present day. We reached Lowe from Nashville to discuss those records, his marriage to Carlene Carter, the pub rock, punk rock, hanging out with Lemmy’s pre-Motörhead band Hawkwind in the early days, and a lot more.
