ANGELA PETRILLI Interview - LA Blues Guitarist

ANGELA PETRILLI Interview (with Matt & Rob) Angela is an LA based guitarist who fronts her great band, "The Players" They most recently released a live version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" which will most certainly blow you away! We talked to Angela about the Netflix documentary "Norman's Rare Guitars".  Angela is part of the documentary and she's a big part of Norman's Guitars with her "guitar of the week" videos and also instructional videos teaching guitar players some of the songs she absolutely loves. A new album is in the works from Angela Petrilli and the Players! In this interview we talk about Norman's, Zeparella, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Incubus, Martin Guitar and of course.. Guitars! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGELA PETRILLI Back in 2019 Angela lost her dear friend and bandmate Jennifer Pagliaro from stage 4 breast cancer. Angela was one half of the duo "Roses and Cigarettes" (with Jenny).  That year they created some major buzz with their 3rd album "Echoes and Silence" and a tour in the works.  On March 25th Rolling Stone named their song "Fast as I Can" as one of the 10 best country songs of the week. But in a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, Pagliaro—who had been fighting off cancer for years—passed away the very next day. She was just 35. For the better part of a year, the grieving Petrilli put down her guitar, left L.A. behind and set out across the world. She traveled to Nashville, New York, Paris and Italy, eventually making it as far as Australia. Along the way, she spent a lot of time on the ocean, where she was able to find some peace and clarity. As she began to heal, she could feel her muse calling once again. Finally back home in L.A., she reached out to some musician friends and booked a bar gig under the name The Petrilli Players. The idea was to shake off the cobwebs, play some covers and have a good time—and that's exactly how it went down. With a reinvigorated sense of purpose, and a band of simpatico players—Brett Grossman on bass, Stephen Haaker on drums, Matt Lomeo on harmonica & backing vocals, Bobby Victor on keys, and Vic Vanacore III on percussion—Petrilli was inspired to start writing again. After several months playing shows around Los Angeles (including opening spots for Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, The Immediate Family, and a performance at Joe Bonamassa's 3rd Annual Stream-a-thon concert), the new songs felt studio-ready, and Petrilli booked a session at Hollywood's legendary Sunset Sound—the same hallowed ground that has hosted sessions by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Van Halen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. ************ You can find Angela on FB and Instagram.  Be sure to visit her website : angelapetrillimusic.com for all upcoming shows and new releases. ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic  Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   All AUDIO versions are also available on YOUTUBE! Steven and Ian begin this week's episode by talking about a big potential reunion in the rock world. Of course we're referring to... TV On The Radio! The band appears to be teasing something right now, which the guys assume is probably their first concert dates in five years (1:38). After that, they of course talk about the return of Oasis. Steven is very pumped, but will he actually pay through the nose to see them in Europe (7:06)? Maybe he will to take his mind off the disastrous state of his Fantasy Album Draft team. It looks like Ian is on the way to yet another easy victory this quarter (22:07). The guys then transition to a conversation about Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, who release a new album, Wild God, today. Steven is yay on Cave, but what about Ian (29:57)?In the mailbag, a listener asks about the phenomenon of "rawdogging" on airplanes and whether the guys ever listen to music without doing anything else (40:00). Then they answer an email about whether they like prog rock, and Steven gives a very detailed answer (47:17).In Recommendation Corner, Ian talks up the UK act Seefeel and Steven goes for veteran singer-songwriter Ray LaMontagne (56:22).New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. In this candid interview on Backstage Sonoma, host Steve Roby engages with folk-inspired indie artist Marty O'Reilly, delving into his unique musical journey and creative processes.  O'Reilly discusses how he began his musical career after receiving a guitar as a Christmas gift during his teenage years and how early encounters with blues and folk music, particularly a serendipitous download of Blind Willie Johnson's recording, profoundly influenced his artistic direction. He reflects on the mix of influences shaping his sound, including artists like Van Morrison, Ray LaMontagne, and Nick Drake, emphasizing his dedication to exploring diverse musical genres rather than being confined to one style. The discussion also touches upon O'Reilly's songwriting and performance ethos. He shares his perspective on songwriting as a therapeutic process before it becomes something to share with an audience. Marty employs creative strategies to combat writer's block, such as drawing inspiration from various Wikipedia articles. His live performances are described as transformative, driven by his effort to make each show an authentic and engaging experience for himself and the audience. This approach aims to break down the barriers between the performer and the listeners, fostering a shared, immersive environment. Marty provides insights into his forthcoming projects and personal life, including balancing his music career with fatherhood. He talks about the challenges and joys of working on his first solo album during the pandemic and the decision to split it into two EPs to better align with the diverse styles of music contained within. He also mentions the upcoming shows, including a notable free performance in Healdsburg at Little Saint and a special New Year's Eve event at the Sebastiani Theatre. Marty expresses excitement about these opportunities to connect with his audience and the detailed planning that goes into making these events memorable.

Nothing, but I guess they're the ones with the microphones! PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle of The Secret SistersABOUT THE SECRET SISTERS:Two-time Grammy nominees Laura Rogers and Lydia Rogers Slagle, known as The Secret Sisters, are Alabama-born siblings who released their self-titled debut album on Universal Republic Records in 2010. Produced by Dave Cobb, the album featured primarily traditional songs and country music covers alongside two originals. The follow-up, Put Your Needle Down, was produced by T-Bone Burnett and found the sisters contributing more original material, including collaborations with Brandi Carlile and Dan Wilson. Both albums reached the Top 10 on Billboard's folk chart. Their next two releases—You Don't Own Me Anymore and Saturn Return—were co-produced by Brandi Carlile, and each earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Plus, you can listen to past episodes on Fox City's Indie Radio every Thursday at 6 PM and Sundays at 3 PM. This week, I'm beyond excited to introduce you to Roger Lee, a solo musician from the small town of Winter, Wisconsin. With a population of just about 325 people, Roger's musical journey took an unexpected turn after a stage four cancer diagnosis. During his chemotherapy treatments, he found solace in a guitar he had owned for years but never had the time to master. Now in remission, Roger brings his unique blend of music to a variety of venues, performing classics from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Gordon Lightfoot, The Band, and Ray LaMontagne, alongside his own original music. Despite never imagining he'd play in public, Roger's musical journey has been like a snowball rolling downhill, gathering momentum and humbling him every step of the way. His original songs, deeply rooted in 70s and 80s country, are gaining acclaim and becoming a significant part of his performances. Join me as we dive into Roger Lee's inspiring story, from his battle with cancer to his growing presence in the Wisconsin music scene. You can connect with Roger on his Facebook page and check out his performances on his YouTube channel. "Working for King Jesus" Ephesians 6:5-9

Waterbrooke Christian Church

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2024 38:17

This Sunday, our message, from Ephesians 6:5-9,  was called “Working for King Jesus.” Ever since the garden of Eden, work has been difficult. Adam's sin led to a broken world and a broken creation. The penalty for his sin fell upon our work. Genesis 3:19 reads “By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground…” As the Ray LaMontagne song, Trouble, goes: “Trouble, Trouble, trouble, trouble, trouble. Trouble been doggin' my soul since the day I was born. Worry, Worry, worry, worry, worry. Worry just will not seem to leave my mind alone.”  In the gospel, Jesus has come to introduce his new kingdom. Ephesians announces that the grand plan of God is to reconcile everything in heaven and on earth to himself in Christ (Ephesians 1:10). The Church is the new redeemed people where that reality  of Christ's eternal reign begins to break through into our lives where we live every day. It is in our lives as disciples of Jesus that the curse begins to be reversed. Work becomes a place of worship, of growth, of freedom.  This Sunday, we are going to look at how knowing that you are working not for “the man” but for the “God-man”, King Jesus, can free your heart and soul and transform your work-life whether you are an employee, an employer, a student, or a stay-at-home parent. Christ's reign in your heart and in your life can begin to transform your workspace for the glory of God. Come this Sunday as we listen to the difference it makes when we recognize that we are working for a good King, King Jesus. We are praying that this passage might help all of us see how God can take hard work places and make them glorious heart work spaces where we are changed and our world begins to change. Looking forward to worshiping Jesus with you on Sunday. Praying for you! In Christ,  Kevin Dibbley, Senior Pastor

Hailing from Tulsa, Oklahoma, Moreland's journey in music has been marked by a commitment to introspection and a relentless pursuit of truth in his songwriting.Moreland's music is characterized by its soul-stirring lyrics, haunting melodies, and his distinctive gravelly voice that carries the weight of his experiences. His songs often serve as windows into his innermost thoughts and feelings, exploring themes of love, loss, redemption, and the human condition with profound honesty and vulnerability.Growing up in the Bible Belt, Moreland's upbringing infused his music with themes of faith, doubt, and existential questioning. While he no longer considers himself religious, echoes of his upbringing can be heard in his lyrics, which grapple with the complexities of belief and the search for meaning in a world filled with uncertainty.Moreland's songwriting prowess has earned him widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. His albums, including "High on Tulsa Heat" and "LP5," have been praised for their poetic lyricism and sonic richness, while his live performances are known for their intimate and electrifying energy.Despite his rising popularity and critical acclaim, Moreland remains grounded and true to himself, eschewing the trappings of fame for the sake of artistic integrity. His commitment to pushing himself as an artist while staying true to his roots is a testament to his dedication to the craft of songwriting and the power of music to touch hearts and minds. In a world filled with noise and distractions, John Moreland's music serves as a beacon of authenticity and truth, reminding us of the power of art to illuminate the human experience and connect us to something greater than ourselves.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

They chat about if we should look to last year's explosion of male country hits in the upper regions of the Hot 100 (Luke Combs, Zach Bryan, Oliver Anthony, among others) or even go back to the 2000s and 2010s to find pop-rock hits from Gavin DeGraw or Ray LaMontagne. We also got some input from our Billboard charts colleagues Gary Trust, Kevin Rutherford and Jim Asker to get an idea of who could be the next growly male voice to climb our rankings. Dinty Child, founding member of Session Americana, the beloved Boston roots music collective, who've accidentally been a band for twenty years, has just released his second solo album, Letting the Lions In. The new songs feature co-writing on all tracks between Dinty and Boston area songwriters like Mark Erelli, Kris Delmhorst and Dave Godowsky. A self-proclaimed slow-writer, the majority of these songs were written on the annual Sub Rosa songwriting retreat Dinty runs on Three Mile Island (no, not that Three Mile Island) on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Owned by the Appalachian Mountain Club, Dinty's family has been working at the island for over 100 years. Dinty currently serves at the off-season manager, putting his musician and carpenter skills to good use hosting songwriter friends at said retreat like Rose Cousins, Rose Polenzani, Rachael Price, Miss Tess and many more, as well as Miles of Music, a summer camp run by Dinty, Kristin Andreassen and Laura Cortese.Letting the Lions In was co-produced by Zachariah Hickman (Josh Ritter, Ray LaMontagne) and recorded at Great North Sound in Parsonsfield Maine over the course of three days in the spring of 2021. Dinty says: "I often trade construction work for studio time there." During our conversation, we dig into why these songs needed to be recorded. Our consensus is that legacy and spreading joy to his community are the top two reasons. Also, Dinty, who says an annoyingly large percentage of his songs start as dreams, talks about what kind of sleeper he is, what's with the lion and his thoughts on drinking thanks to the handful of alcohol songs on the new album. Dinty is a dear friend to the podcast and an important part of the New England musical landscape, we're thrilled to have him on the show!Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
