Welcome to my favorite hour of my favorite day of the entire year. It's hard to put into words how special this day is and what it means to me and so many others but I'll try...Picture it --> 200 of the most beautiful humans to walk this earth on a private beach. Love, unspeakable joy and a rare Spirit have ruled the day. And now...the golden hour is upon us. The sun is slowly lowering towards the horizon of the Pacific ocean and every one and everything is awash in the most breathtaking golden yellow light. There's a magic in the air that just can't be described.I consider every hour important when I'm spinning but I will say that I consider this hour THE hour where, with the right music selections, I can take people's hearts and emotions and send them places that every human should dream to go.This set starts with galloping, emotional anthems and slowly ebbs towards a nostalgic soft landing where I pull out Sarah McLaughlin "Silence", Stereolove Feat. Brian Kennedy "Life, Love & Happiness", Christian Burns "Wonderful Life", Lighthouse Family "High" and Beth Orton "Central Reservation". Everyone was in emotional overload with the gorgeous trance anthems I was playing...and then as I went into the nostalgia set I just kind of sent everyone over the edge (in the best way). We are a blessed tribe with a long history together. To get to create and take part in the unspeakable joy that unfolded was a blessing I'll always cherish. As always, this set was brought to you with every ounce of love that I've got to give. I hope it touches your heart as much as it did mine and so many others as Epic Maui Journey came to an emotionally powerful conclusion.*I edited this set to remove the very ending of the day, as I was playing more downbeat songs that were perfect for the moment but wouldn't have exactly made sense in podcast form. I feel that the songs I played at the very end of the day were special and to be enjoyed only in that very moment. #/Artist/Title/Remix01. Ciaran McAuley/Love Loud/Original Mix02. "Angles And Ordinary Men" Back in the late '90s Wendy Lands' debut album Angels and Ordinary Men landed on my desk in the form a package from Canada and I dove right in. Falling somewhere between Beth Orton's Trailer Park and Sade's Stronger Than Pride, the album was a revelation. It was soulful, it was atmospheric, it was melodic, it was rich, and it was filled with musical finesse and jazzy textures that made repeat listens more and more rewarding. So who is Wendy Lands and what in the devil has she been up to since her marvelous debut album? She's going to fill you in far better than I ever could, but let me give you some quick details: In the early '90s the Montreal-born, Toronto-raised Wendy Lands cut her musical teeth doing theatre adn playing in a pop band called Double Dare. Her debut album spawned two top 40 hits and landed her a Juno nomination for Best New Solo artist in 1997. She toured with Jann Arden, grabbed two Canadian Radio Music Award nominations and as a side hustle, she recorded a series of commercial voice overs. Remember that last bit...She moved to LA to be a songwriter, writing numbers with Paul Williams and Melissa Manchester, then moved back to Canada where she released two more fabulous albums Mumble and Altitude. This is a partial list, Wendy is going to fill in the blanks, but her main gig now is being a widely respected voice actor. Is there new music simmering? Of course there is, but I'll defer to her on that one, too. Look, Wendy Lands is wonderful. Her voice is smooth and stunning, her vocal poise is otherworldly and aside from her gifts behind the mic, she's one of the nicest people ever. www.wendylands.com (http://www.wendylands.com) www.bombshellradio.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alegreenbooks.com) Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

As with most stuff, I was late to the Skinny Pelembe party and the way I got into his music was as random as it gets: I came across an Instagram post (see, Instagram does have its uses) of his about buying an Austin Allegro with his streaming royalties ( I think that was the gist of it). Now my old man - rest his soul - was an Austin aficionado back in the days of my formative years when he got hold of the Austin 1800, Maxi, Princess and Maestro (I crashed this beast of a machine soon after I passed my test and I think that kinda stopped his love affair with Austins). He never bought an Allegro – that was the domain of our across the road neighbours and buying the same mustard coloured one would have been a bit weird.Enough of this nonsense: Skinny is writing and performing music that is really far reaching in its impact. It's ingenious, it's inventive, unpredictable, open minded and most of all, it makes me curious, not least to put my own experience and interpretation on the music. It challenges me as I like art to do. I can be in the middle of soulful banger and weeper that explores what it means to grow up in a world that dehumanises, the next time I'm in a trippy, distorted underground village and everything else in between and around about. This is what it's all about. Brilliant stuff. He's just released, with Beth Orton, a cover of Leonard Cohen's wonderful 1974 track Who By Fire to complement his two albums, two EP's and singles. I'm so pleased that I got to talk with a true diamond. "Follow The Leader" So, Rain Phoenix first was on my radar back in 1991 when she and her brother River had a band called Aleka's Attic. They had a marvelous song called Across The Way on this compilation Tame Yourself, which also featured The Pretenders, Michael Stipe, the Indigo Girls and K.D. Lang. The Texas-born Phoenix acted in TV shows like Family Ties and Amazing Stories and in movies like Even Cowgirls Get The Blues and Hitch. She fronted Papercranes, who put out three really great albums and she was in the Galactic Country band Venus and the Moon with Chris Stills. She also put out a really stunning solo album called River, which was named after her late brother, in 2019. A native of Southern California, Kirk Hellie is like a music archeologist because he knows how to dig sounds out of the deepest of grounds. A lover and studier of Avant Garde music, was in bands like Hellie Siblings, Death Loop Detonator and Pink Noise Test. Hellie played with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols, and toured with The Cramps and Iggy Pop.Together, Phoenix and Hellie are Escape Artist Lovers, who play a dizzying blend of sonorous and scruffy indie rock that sounds something like Beth Orton fronting the Jesus and Mary Chain. The interplay between these two musicians is pure magic and the songs, whether they're stripped back or coated in layers of fuzz and groove, are delicious slices of melodic bliss.   https://escapeartistlovers.bandcamp.com/ www.launchleft.com www.bombshellradio.com www.embersarts.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.alexgreenbooks.com Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

"Get Me To A Nunnery" The Hawaii-born, Wisconsin-raised Heather Lynne Horton has a lot of stories to tell and because she's a born storyteller, she does so with the perfect blend of humor, hi-jinx and self-deprecation. We'll let her tell you those stories, but in the meantime, we'll offer this quick version of who she is. After college she hit Minneapolis in search of the mythical Prince and then landed in Chicago where she met her real life prince, singer/songwriter Michael McDermott. She plays fiddle and sings backup in McDermott's band and the two also had the fabulous side project The Westies. Her first solo album Postcard Saturdays came out in 2012, which was followed by Don't Mess With Mrs. Murphy in 2018. Although it took nearly six years for the follow-up Get Me To A Nunnery to hit shelves, it was well worth the wait. A moving and stirring song cycle that brings to mind Beth Orton, Sinead Lohan and 1,000 Kisses-era Patty Griffin, Get Me To The Nunnery is redolent with strength, vulnerability, humor and darkness. Horton's phrasing is emotionally precise and each syllable lands with finesse and grace. It's a top to bottom a perfect album and this conversation is so much fun. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a very mellow, very lovely conversation between a woman known for her gorgeous voice and heartfelt songwriting and a man known for, as he calls it, “wobbly saxophone,” Beth Orton and Alabaster dePlume. Beth Orton has been making beautiful, often heartbreaking songs since the early 1990s, when she was a leading light in what I think is a now-forgotten genre called “folktronica.” She first found notice by contributing vocals to a few Chemical Brothers songs, then broke out with her timeless debut album Trailer Park in 1996. She has since created a lovely and varied body of work that's explored a variety of sounds but that's tied together by her unforgettable voice. Orton's latest album is from last year: It's called Weather Alive, which to me sounds like a spiritual heir to Van Morrison's classic Astral Weeks, which may in part be because it features the saxophone playing of today's other guest, Alabaster dePlume. Check out a little bit of “Fractals” right here, and definitely go see Orton on tour this fall; she'll be back in the States this September. Bethortonofficial.com has all the dates. Alabaster dePlume picked up the saxophone in 2007, but sort of reinvented himself—including taking on that stage name—in 2015. He became a fixture in London's improvisational jazz scene not long after, and a lot of what he does is centered around the recording studio/gathering place where this conversation was recorded, Total Refreshment Centre. DePlume broke out in 2020 with an album called To Cy & Lee, which was inspired by and named after some folks he helped as a mental-health support worker. In a couple of weeks, he'll release a new album called Come With Fierce Grace, whose initial sessions were done during the pandemic with Tom Skinner, a drummer who's currently also a member of the Radiohead offshoot The Smile. Check out “Greek Honey Slick” from the new album, and check out alabaster-deplume.com for his schedule, which includes a month of U.S. shows in September. As I mentioned at the top of this intro, this chat is both lovely and very mellow. DePlume is a soothing presence whose spirit seems powered almost exclusively by love, and Orton is happy to participate. They chat about the climate-activism event that landed dePlume in jail and found Orton chased off the stage; they talk about angry yoga and the joys of triangle chokes, and Orton points out how technological advances can help women artists. Find your zen and enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Beth Orton and Alabaster dePlume for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness on this very site. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time.

Ollella - "Head in the Clouds" from the 2023 self-released album Back Back Back Seattle musician Ellie Barber has trained as a classical cellist since the age of nine. She integrates these studies into her project Ollella (pronounced oh-lel-uh), crafting a jazzy, folktronica style that calls to mind Beth Orton.  “As someone who grew up playing classical cello but listening to indie music, I've spent a lot of time thinking about what direction I want to take my music as a new solo artist," she tells Glide Magazine. "I wrote 'Head in the Clouds' during a particularly exploratory period, playing with different effects on my loop pedal and not attaching judgment to what came out. The bones of this song immediately felt so genuine to the type of sound that I was seeking – so much so that I left it untouched for six months because I was afraid I would ruin it.”  “The verses speak to my own pivot towards music: how I kept feeling unsettled where I was in life because I wasn't following the little voice in my gut to pursue full-time artistry,” she continues in a press release. “I'm Not Sure At All” Bringing to mind a low-fi Kate Bush mixed with Cat Power and Beth Orton, the Kent-born Marlody is a revelation. Her debut album I'm Not Sure At All is a rich and lustrous affair, filled with confident songwriting about feeling unconfident. And that's the beautiful thing about Marlody—her music is a delicious cauldron of contrasts that's redolent with vulnerability and strength. The songs on I'm Not Sure At All ache with longing and uncertainty, yet then ring out with bursts of sure-footed courage, poise and tenacity. A trained classical pianist with an orchestral future set out before her, Marlody tossed traditionalism aside and immersed herself in indie noise rock like Shellac and Slint and found a through-line that linked the classical with the cacophonous. I'm Not Sure At All is one of 2023's great finds and Marlody's music is a riveting and spellbinding listen. British singer and songwriter Beth Orton has found distinctive ways to blend her folky acoustic guitar-playing with the sounds of the electronic music world. But her latest record, Weather Alive, settles in a distinctly personal space where genres don't so much collide as fade away, and the basis for the album wasn't guitar, but tracks she recorded on a beat-up, questionably-tuned upright piano she bought at a street market. Orton also says that she got to collaborate with herself - as she produced the record - and with that old piano, which "really spoke to me," (Pitchfork.) Additionally, in keeping with her wide ranging musical circle (she's worked with Chemical Brothers, William Orbit, Nick Cave, Emmylou Harris, Four Tet, to drop a few names), she collaborated remotely on Weather Alive with multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily, the Smile drummer Tom Skinner (Sons of Kemet), and guitarist Grey McMurray, and other folks during lockdown.  Beth Orton and her band play some of these tunes in-studio.  Set list: "Friday Night", "Fractals", "Arms Around a Memory" Weather Alive by Beth Orton

Peter Matthew Bauer made his name as a member of The Walkmen, whose nervy, guitar-driven rock lives in the DNA of Bauer's new album, Flowers. Beth Orton has an even longer recorded legacy that stretches back to her 1996 debut, Trailer Park. Orton's new record, Weather Alive, finds the singer taking control of her own sound — and driving it in new, warmly organic directions. We've also got a new album by Vieux Farka Touré and Khruangbin, who collaborate on interpretations of work by Touré's legendary late father, Ali Farka Touré. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw headlines another album-length collaboration, this one with the versatile strings of Attacca Quartet. And, speaking of versatility, jazz drummer Makaya McCraven rounds out this week's lineup with the help of a small army of players; his new album is titled In These Times. Featured Albums: 1. Everyone's Got A Camera” David Poe is a singer songwriter of dazzling economy; his wit and his sly genius for turning a phrase makes each line of his songs a piece of art. Poe is a cross between Hemingway and John Prine—he tells stories without telling stories about the stories he's telling. He's straightforward and elegant and lets you fill in the blanks with where the humanity might reside and where the heart might end up. Over the course of albums like God and the Girl, Love Is Red, The Late Album and his new one, Everyone's Got A Camera, Poe is one of the greatest and most consistent songwriters out there. The new album is a staggering collection that's masterfully melodic, harmonically brilliant and filled with world weary observations that unflinchingly stare down the modern landscape. A composer fellow of the Sundance Institute, Poe has asserted himself as one of the great songwriters of his generation. Or any generation, for that matter. Poe stays busy—not only has he toured, collaborated, performed and recorded with folks like Bob Dylan, Tori Amos, T-Bone Burnett, The Jayhawks, Beth Orton, Ron Sexsmith,Regina Spektor, They might Be Giants and Marc Ribot, Poe has been heavily involved writing scores for contemporary ballet and modern theatre projects across the world. His new album hits shelves this week but that didn't stop Poe from singing with the Charlotte Symphony this past weekend in the world premiere of the Blackstar Symphony, the first orchestral presentation of David Bowie's final album. www.davidpoe.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
