Hello and welcome Americana Podcast listeners to a very special and celebratory episode. Long time listeners and new friends, we are so excited to share with you that as of April 29, 2024- we are celebrating the 5th Anniversary of this show. It has been such an honor to have been documenting the story of Americana through the artist's lens. And we've heard some incredible stories, from Billy Strings to Lori McKenna, to Shinyribs and most recently Hiss Golden Messenger. From the young blood of Jamestown Revival to the stalwart rockers in the image of Jim Lauderdale. We've only scratched the surface of what makes Americana what it is today and what its future can only hold. As we mark a momentous occasion, five years of weaving tales and tunes, let us embark on a journey through the rich tapestry of our show's legacy. To honor this milestone, we are joined by one of the true luminaries of the Americana scene. First, a troubadour whose name is synonymous with the genre, a man whose songs echo with the spirit of the American heartland, the one and only Ray Wylie Hubbard. I know I've been your temporary host for a while so the celebration doesn't stop there. Also returning to the show is our very own, revered songwriter whose wit and wisdom have endeared him to audiences far and wide, the incomparable Robert Earl Keen. Together, they represent the very essence of Americana, embodying its spirit and sound with every chord and lyric.Live from KNBT's Roots and Branches show- join us as Ray Wylie Hubbard, Robert Earl Keen, and Americana radio pioneer Mattson Rainer recount their songwriting journey, the passion for music, and indulge us in some very special performances (this is a long show- but I can assure you it is worth every minute). So join us as we raise a toast to the history of our show, to five years of passion, perseverance, and the relentless pursuit of musical truth. Shinyribs is an Austin Texas band that began in 2007 as a side project for Kevin Russell, who also goes by Kev, and was then still committed to The Gourds, the band he had co-founded fifteen years earlier. A few years later, The Gourds released their last album, and Kev sauntered over to Shinyribs full time. Known for his showmanship on stage and for a big band approach to both the concept and performances of his music, and drawing from a smorgasbord of funky roots-rock, big band swing, Tex-Mex, screaming soul and burlesque blues, while pumping out infectious rhythms and topping it all with hooky harmony, Shinyribs is a party waiting to happen. At least that is what it sounds like on first listen, and looks like at first glance. Shinyribs is a shindig, and a large one at that, but it is also a vehicle for Kev's unique brand of poetry, which can point to deeper, darker issues at times, especially on his latest album Transit Damage. I spoke with Kev in early October 2023 on a crisp, clear autumn afternoon in the rolling foothills of the Upstate of South Carolina countryside before Shinyribs' performance as a headliner at The Albino Skunk Music Festival, where we talked about the secret sauce that went into his new album, about making good records in the studio and being equally good live, how starting Shinyribs felt like a hail mary to him at first, plus we discuss James Brown and an Albino Skunk Fest memory which parallels one of The Godfather of Soul's signature parts of his shows. There is a lot more, including live music from Shinyribs' performance from that night, all simply waiting for you to press play. This series is a part of the lineup of both public radio WNCW and Osiris Media, with all of the Osiris shows available here. You can also hear new episodes on Bluegrass Planet Radio here. Thanks to everyone at the Albino Skunk Music Festival as well as John Gillespie for sharing some of his great photos of the Shinyribs show — many of the great people at Albino Skunk made this episode possible, and you can listen to more episodes on this series on artists who played there, like Miko Marks, Darrell Scott, and Eilen Jewell. We also have interviews with Nora Jane Struthers and the band Stillhouse Junkies from this fall's Skunkfest coming up, as well as conversations with Pete Wernick among others from this fall's IBMA conference. Thanks to Corrie Askew for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, and to Joshua Meng, who wrote and performed out theme songs.Southern Songs and Stories was recently ranked in the top 20 Southern podcasts here on feedspot.com, which is worth a look. He's a busy man, but we finally got him! Jim Bachmann is a wizard of words and an Americana master with his signature "good timing Stonerbilly" sound and a presence of wisdom and authenticity. He's been making music solo and and along with his band The Day Drinkers for over a decade now and is still making the rounds. From playing "professional busker" gigs on a sidewalk downtown to opening for Billy Joe Shaver, Whitey Morgan and the 78's, Dallas Moore, Shinyribs, Reckless Kelly, The SteelDrivers, Ramsay Midwood, Mike and the Moonpies, Jeremy Pinnell, Paul Cauthen and more he's been grinding it out with the best of 'em. Settle in and enjoy this warm conversation with a lovely man and a great hang!

Willie Nelson is a world-renowned musical legend, but in Texas, he's something more: a beloved native son and benevolent elder who's brought countless new talents into the family fold — often during the famed Luck Reunions at his ranch outside of Austin. As Willie's 89th birthday neared, Luck Presents, the entity creating those events, and Bruce Robison, the singer-songwriter, producer and force behind all-analog record label The Next Waltz, wanted to celebrate his influence and impact with a Texas-sized party. On May 1, 2022, Sheryl Crow, Nathaniel Rateliff, Steve Earle, Robert Earl Keen, Margo Price, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Vincent Neil Emerson, Shinyribs, Emily Gimble and Robison serenaded their inspiration with songs plucked from the greatest canon in American music. Fortunately, Robison rolled tape. The result, One Night in Texas: The Next Waltz's Tribute to the Red Headed Stranger, will be released on April 28, 2023 — one day before Willie turns 90. We talk with Bruce Robison about the selection process between song and artist, and the end result of this collaboration honoring the red headed stranger known as Willie Nelson. www.newwestrecords.com © 2023 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. In the wake of the overturning of Roe v Wade, several companies with presences in Austin have announced that they'll cover travel costs for employees seeking abortion care. Travis County DA Jose Garza has announced that his office will not prosecute abortion-related cases, and Austin City Council Member Chito Vela is spearheading a resolution discouraging Austin police from investigating allegations concerning abortion. The decision has also prompted an increase of interest in vasectomies and tubal ligation procedures. A city-commissioned consumer advocate team is warning that proposed utility price hikes from Austin Energy will present significant challenges to lower-income Austinites. The downtown building housing Vince Young Steakhouse, dating back to 1912, is facing demolition. The Harry Ransom Center at UT is creating a new endowment named for actor Robert De Niro, who is set to host a 65th anniversary gala for the Ransom Center in September. Six Austin companies have made a new ranking of the "Best Companies To Work For". Hoffbrau Steaks, one of Austin's oldest restaurants, has closed down again - this time because it's just too hot. The last two Blues On The Green shows for the year will feature Shinyribs on July 19 and Black Joe Lewis on July 20. Good and bad news with the weather: we've officially set a new record for 100-degree days in June - but wasn't that rain nice yesterday? There's a chance we'll see more this week, and slightly cooler temps - we may not hit 100 again until after the July 4 holiday.
Uvalde updates: The Robb Elementary School building, where last month's mass shooting occurred, is set to be demolished. School district police chief Pete Arredondo has been placed on leave from those duties by Uvalde CISD administrators. Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez has filed suit against the Texas Department of Public Safety, demanding that they hand over all records and information related to the shooting. And Texas Senate hearings on the crime at the Capitol that have been ongoing all this week have included very little discussion of guns. Speaking of guns - earlier this week, a man tried to enter the 7-11 store at Ben White and South 1st with an AR-15 rifle after the clerk declined to give him free gas. He's charged with first-degree felony aggravated robbery. And, another man was arrested Sunday after firing rounds at people near Zilker Park and threatening a mass shooting at a weekly Sunday drum circle there. Median home prices inside the Austin city limits have hit another all-time new high: $667,000 on average as of May, a 21% year-to-year jump - we're now considered the second-most overpriced market in the U.S. Historic Ski Shores Cafe on Lake Austin has re-opened after a remodel by new owners McGuire Moorman Lambert, while the equally historic original Threadgill's site on North Lamar will see a 100-unit apartment building go up behind the restaurant structure, which will be preserved as part of the project after a request to tear it down was denied by the city. Live music this weekend: Friday shows including 5 Seconds of Summer and Pale Waves at Waterloo Park, CJ Chenier and the Red Hot Louisiana Band at Antone's, and the fabulous Copa Kings at the Highball. Saturday catch Country Willie Edwards at Sagebrush, Shinyribs at the Haute Spot, the all-day Texas metal showcase Lonestar Unleashed with Austin's High Desert Queen, Rickshaw Billie's Burger Patrol and Skatenigs, Dallas' Wo-Fat and Temptress, Houston's Warlung and tons more, bring your earplugs. Meanwhile the Hot Summer Nights free concert series in the Red River Cultural District is set to return August 4-6.
A collab from Mavis Staples & Levon Helm, a collab between Ray Wylie Hubbard & Shinyribs, in-your-face bluegrass from the Edgar Loudermilk Band , a super chill jam band track from Cabinet, and much more "#484 For people who know the prettiest flower on the mountain" originated from Americana Music Show.

Star Collector, Game DayStar Collector, Cayenne & CaramelRocket Bureau, One For The AngelsThe Fleshtones, Mi Engañaste BienMuck and the Mires, Good EnoughMuck And The Mires, Don't Start Running AwayJesse Malin, State Of The ArtShinyribs, SweeteningAl Anderson, You Can't HideThe Lunar Laugh, By the Light of the Living RoomThe Bevis Frond, Everyone RiseThe Toms, You Shot Me out of Your CanonThe Weeklings, Don't Know, Don't CareThe Weeklings, That Thing You DoMuck And The Mires, Too Soon To Fall In LoveStar Collector, Super Zero Blues Acho, visita nuestro Facebook y déjanos tus peticiones, comentarios, canciones...O escríbenos un email aquí.
A big spike in daily COVID deaths - 23 on Wednesday - pushes the overall county total past 1,000. On the bright side, new hospitalization average continues to decline, and is now approaching Stage 4. Marble Falls ISD backtracks on a new masking mandate that was set to begin this month. UT Health continues a public study of COVID antibody rates. ACL Fest organizers will again trade single day passes for initial vaccinations - while their special events permit from the City remains unapproved. An Austin woman is suing Austin Energy and ERCOT over the death of her elderly mother, who was lost amidst the February freeze. Taylor and Williamson County have approved a slate of incentives for Samsung's proposed new semiconductor plant. Shinyribs announces that bassist Jeff Brown has died. Mount Bonnell sees a dramatic crime spike. Westlake High junior Jason Roberts makes the U.S. national team in speed climbing. The Dallas Cowboys take on Super Bowl champs Tampa Bay and Tom Brady tonight as regular NFL play begins. And another couple of super hot days before a cooldown begins this weekend.
As season two continues, I am thrilled to have Kelley Mickwee on the show today. Kelley is a fellow Cherokee who moved to Austin from Memphis and joined up with a killer four piece called the Trishas. She's a Shiny Soul Sister in Kevin Russell's Shinyribs. She's a founding member of Red River Songwriters along with Drew Kennedy, Josh Grider, Walt Wilkins, Susan Gibson and Brandy Zdan. But what I admire most about Kelley is her show on Sun Radio called River Girl Radio. We talked about her love of said show and how the theme of the often has her diving into deep artist listening. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Seela!Born to exhausted Indian immigrants on a mild, summer eve, Seela had an average childhood battling the forces of evil with her superhuman strength. On quality meals of Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, The Muppets, David Bowie, & Julia Child, she flourished in nerdiness, topping off at 5’3″. As a young, wandering adult, Seela met her lifelong “people” in Austin’s close-knit music community.Since then she has sung back-up, collaborated with and cracked wise among musical heavyweights from Austin and beyond, sharing the stage with those such as Freedy Johnston, Sean Hayes, Anthony da Costa, Shinyribs, and Matt the Electrician. Her decades of shows in the Live Music Capitol serve as master classes on performing, orchestrating, and bandleading. She is a perpetual student who uses her vast knowledge and experience to make it all look easy.Seela’s upcoming release, “Cool”, is self-produced and her best yet. With Austin’s most exquisite players, lyrically brilliant and melodic songs, gorgeous harmonies, lush orchestration, and plenty of light on the artistry of her musicians, each of the thirteen tracks are their own world and beautifully pull together in orbit. To celebrate the album, Seela home-made animated lyric videos which will be played in track order for a gigless release party.Seela is also a painter, illustrator, graphic designer, and has a small, bread-baking business. In her free time she likes to invent cocktails and watch tv on the couch with her dreamy, drummer husband Jon Greene and their magical dog, Liza Minnelli.Seela Misra,Cool,CoolSeela Misra,Take A Picture,Coolwww.makingascene.org,Sella,Seela Misra,Prize,CoolSeela Misra,His Final Performance,Cool

On today's episode of Americana podcast: the 51st state- Kevin Russell. Also known as Shinyribs Kevin Russell, or as we've been calling him "the physical embodiment of sound"- was born in the late 60's in Beaumont, Texas. In his formative years- Russell's family relocated to Shreveport Louisiana, where he was exposed to one of the richest hotbeds for roots-based music. At 17 he began to play in various bars and venues across the state and in the early 90's he relocated to Austin, TX. In 1994 he became a member of the cult-classic band "The Gourds" which lasted until 2013. Since then Russell has been performing as Shinyribs- a musical Hoge podge of anything from gritty swamp rock, to smooth soul, to just flat-out groovy songs. Also the purveyor of one of the most fun and entertaining live shows, ever. Russell's timeline exemplifies not only a part of where Americana music started "officially" but hopefully where its going as well. Shinyribs is also joining our host Robert Earl Keen, not only on the podcast but on Keen's annual Christmas tour this year!
Episode 107 features three conversations held on the run during AmericanaFest 2019 in Nashville, Sept. 10-14. Billy Strings represents the cutting edge of bluegrass and improvisational acoustic music. He's a breakout bandleader and a guitar player's guitar player. His second album is recently out, called Home. Jontavious Willis is another guitar-playing youngster, but his thing is traditional country blues. He's been mentored by Taj Mahal and Keb Mo. Kevin Russell is the songwriter and band leader known as Shinyribs - a legend of the Austin scene and a wildly entertaining showman.
Ep 415: Kevin Russell of Shinyribs tells the story of how his Fog & Bling album began and the "Catfish Heaven 2" tie in. He also shares three tracks from the album. "Kevin Russell / Shinyribs interview and tracks from Fog & Bling" originated from Americana Music Show.
Ep410: I've got several live albums from the past on the show. You're gonna hear live music from The Wood Brothers, The Allman Brothers Band, Old Crow Medicine Show, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and ZZ Top. I've also got the amazing Eilen Jewell album, the new North Mississippi Allstars, Dave Alvin, Tanya Tucker, Commonheart, Shinyribs, Jim Lauderdale and many more.... "For people who can’t get enough live music" originated from Americana Music Show.

He put the hard work in and through several incarnations of bands, and personalities, he has made it. He won the Austin Chronicle's Best Band of Austin for the past 2 years. I witnessed him taking his throne, it was in Zilker park in front of... 40 some-odd thousand Austinites on a free Blues on the Green show last Summer. Along with his cape and stage antics an ever growing band of musicians; including an entire horn section and backup singer/dancers known as the Ribblets, it was certainly a sight to see. But not to gloss over, the wildly popular and other Austin favorite, his previous band, The Gourds. Along with Jimmy Smith sharing vocals, and the rest of the band. They were able to seduce this city with their swamp infused Cajun jams for almost 2 decades and produce 10 albums. But their ultimate "hiatus" came in the fall of 2013. I know you've heard their bluegrass version of Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice", remember that? Most think it was from Phish or some jam band like that. But that was due to it being miscredited on file sharing platforms. Remember all of that downloading that you were doing at the turn of the millennium on Napster? Be sure to keep an eye out for Shinyribs or Kevin Russell (or maybe even a Gourds reunion). He can also be found under a number of alias that he might use, like of the Tijuana Trainwreck Horns featuring Shiny Soul Sisters, but there are oh so many... Like he does when he pops up at Sam's Town Point; which is the ultimate dive bar, located in a trailer house in unincorporated South Austin, the Chronicle did a great article this Summer about the bar and the cast of characters that you will meet there. Even ol' Jimmy, he will also turn up there on occasion as well to play a gig, so who knows, maybe even a Gourds reunion someday! Let's ramp this set up, starting with two from them, back then in happier times. Who Built the Moon, an interesting thought... That was a song off of Kevin's first solo release as Shinyribs in 2010. Also, Shinyribs just released their latest album, "Fog & Bling", this past Summer. This next song, well it isn't off of that new album, but it is my favorite song from him. For this song, he typically opens by referring to this song as a song about his favorite root vegetable. Then starts naming them: Fennel, bulbs, carrots, beets. But his is the ohh so Sweet Potato... Please enjoy even if this isn't your favorite root vegetable and thanks for listening. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations-deep-dives/message

There’s definitely some Folk Fest content in this one, and a bunch of great other songs. It’ll make sense if you listen.

Lastly, there are a couple of great shows coming up this week, including the two night CD release for Del Barber’s new one, Prairieography!

Today a long overdue in-studio visit by former Winnipegger, Matt Epp. He’s been on quite a roll the past few years with his Amorian Assembly, and their new album is a winner. Good to have him in to chat all about it. As usual, we’ve got all of the new music and classics you could shake a stick at, if you were to shake a stick at music. (That’s pretty weird, but if you’re so inclined, go for it.)

Dropping by the studio today is a phenomenal photographer/videographer, Mike Latschislaw (www.latschphotography.com), who is hard at work on a documentary about the fertile and amazing Winnipeg music community. One of the artists featured in the movie is Scott Nolan, and we’re always glad to chat with him, so we got him on the phone. We’re also excited about a star-studded show on Feb. 8, and we’ve got some exciting new music to debut, and a legend to remember.
