Keith and Glen join us for a lively conversation about reconnecting with music—this time through the lens of what some (including us!) might call a supergroup. These talented musicians have found harmony not only in their sound but also by creating space for each other's creative ideas, families, opinions, and lifestyles. Their band, Newbridge, delivers a powerful blend of Americana, folk, and roots-rock straight from Halifax, Nova Scotia. The lineup features Canadian music veterans Keith Maddison (Maddison Avenue), Glen Nicholson (In-Flight Safety), Jeff Mosher (The Mellotones, Matt Andersen), Warren Robert (Myles Goodwyn, Pogey), and Robbie Crowell (Sturgill Simpson, Deer Tick, Midland, Matt Mays)—each bringing a wealth of experience and a shared drive to craft a distinctive sound. The group's musical journey took them to Nashville, TN, where they recorded their debut album at the legendary Creative Workshop Studio (CWS), with production helmed by the multi-talented Robbie Crowell. Originally built in 1971, CWS has played host to icons like Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, the Doobie Brothers, and Rod Stewart, and served as the setting for the influential music documentary Heartworn Highways. In this episode, the band reflects on their time in Nashville—complete with stories of Keith's kids as temporary roommates—and shares how mutual respect has been the secret ingredient to creating stellar new music. THE DAGG SESSIONSKen Tizzard and Music For Goats In St.John's in 1982 I cut my teeth playing bass with local skate/punk bands who wholeheartedly embraced the DIY model of the punk rock culture. SNFU were the first band I had ever seen who had taken this model to a national level and upon seeing the energy and intensity of the performance I knew - this was what I wanted to do with my life. At 18 I relocated to Toronto and landed a job at Music Express Magazine which let to the position of photo editor where I got to work with legendary photographers Floria Sigusmondi, Herb Ritts and Annie Leibovitz shooting bands like David Bowie, REM and U2 as well as hundreds of touring band around the world. This introduction to the music business, record companies, PR agencies and band management helped me to understand the relationship of band and audience from the viewpoint of the ‘machine.' As well, sharing office space with Management Trust (Jake Gold) led me to an audition with The Watchmen. In turn this changed my life direction for over a decade as I toured the world and grew as a songwriter and artist. In 1999 I began working a lot with Big Wreck singer Ian Thornley who at the time was married to my sister Christine. Big Wreck and The Watchmen were in between albums and both bands were feeling the weight of years of touring and the change in the record companies as we moved into the digital age. Ian and I decided to form a new band which led to the creation of Thornley with whom I toured relentlessly for many years. Towards the end of Thornley, Ian had decided to recreate the magic that was Big Wreck and again I toured with the band under that name as I began parting ways with the lifestyle and direction of the band. Upon leaving Thornley, there was a period of return to DIY with independent records which captured my solid endeavours - from six string bass singer songwriter (Quest Storey house) through several incarnations of bands including Bad Intent, The Variety Show Players and in 2017 the unlikely local crew which has grown to become Music For Goats. As well, the development of The Whiskey Wednesday Show created a need for a production studio which we also created in our home. The Show has grown into a seven camera, 24 channel audio, weekly livestream hosting guests from Rick Mercer, William Prince and Joey ‘Shithead” Keithley (D.O.A.) to Matt Mays and Bob Izumi. Songs and stories every week with your host Ken Tizzard and Music For Goats. It is now January 2024 and I am once again looking to release another album of original music with the current line-up of Music For Goats; Neil Lucy (guitar) Ken Grant (bass) and Dave Lawrence (drums) and Steve Dagg (RIP - drums). This album titled “THE DAGG SESSIONS” celebrates the songs created before drummer Steve Dagg was diagnosed with Cancer. After a year long battle of treatments Steve passed away in the winter of 2023. We had recorded the drums for the entire record in September before Steve's illness was terminal. The Dagg Sessions is available on all platforms on April 30, 2024 The Dagg Sessions will be available on vinyl thanks to contributors who purchased sections of the back album cover in order to help out with up front costs. Yes, we are sell outs… As for style of this record, I have to say it fits in with the Americana genre pretty well as if combines folk, country, rock and pop into a collection of songs that once again document a time and place in my own personal history. Ken Tizzard www.kentizzard.com ktizzard@kentizzard.com

Yvonne Matsell is a celebrated music booker and long-time friend of the Canadian indie music scene. As the live music talent buyer for clubs like Ultrasound, Ted's Wrecking Yard, The Horseshoe Tavern and The Reverb Room, Yvonne gave countless indie bands their first decent gigs, and watched as many of them went on to become success stories and musical household names. Just a few of the bands and artists that flourished as a result of Yvonne's magic touch include: Skydiggers, Lowest of the Low, Rheostatics, Barenaked Ladies, Headstones, Matt Mays, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Slean, Hawksley Workman, Feist, and Broken Social Scene. In a business that can often be tough, gritty and uber-competitive, Yvonne remains "one of the good ones". A deep love of music, good humour, generosity, and a willingness to work tirelessly on behalf of artists, has made her one of the most admired and respected people in the Canadian music landscape. Join East Coast DNA host Darcy Walsh for a chat with  @SkyeWallace  With a skill in carving melodies and shreddable moments from rock foundations, Skye Wallace is also an expert at proving herself in every room, at every turn. The guitar-slinging Canadian road warrior has honed a visceral and honest sound, permeating equal parts Courtney Barnett, Patti Smith, and Neil Young's Marshall Stack era. A live show from Skye and her band is guaranteed to make you let loose and feel something. Shaped by an upbringing of constant motion, and a career that has seen her tour the country endlessly with respected acts such as Matt Mays and Crown Lands, Wallace is at home with the idea that change, especially in oneself, is a constant. This truism, equal parts empirical and emotional, has shaped these new songs, finished during lockdown but dealing with a time when staying in one place was wishful thinking. For Wallace, there's both comfort and conflict in remembering and reconciling the versions of herself formed at the many stops along the way. 00:00 Intro featuring Skye Wallace - Tear A Piece (Bite Me) clip 00:31 Interview with Skye Wallace 29:49 Skye Wallace - The Doubt from Terribly Good Subscribe to  @eastcoastdna  for music scene chats and live performances. Out September 23rd, 2022 via Sonic Records, Adam Baldwin's new album Concertos & Serenades is a study of the dark side of East Coast culture. It's a captivating collection of musical short stories and character portraits; a collection which, as Adam tells us in this episode, almost feels like it's halfway between an album and a true-crime podcast.   Adam Baldwin is an acclaimed, award-winning Nova Scotian singer/ songwriter/ multi-instrumentalist who's renowned as a brilliant folk-rock troubadour with an honest, earthy approach. He's also widely known for the many years spent he's spent travelling the world, playing alongside fellow Nova Scotia great Matt Mays. But on this much-anticipated new release, Adam's taking a whole new, conceptual approach to his songcraft. With Concertos & Serenades, he presents a strikingly stark and devastatingly dark brand of East Coast raconteurship. Along this ride, we encounter unforgettable characters who often begin with the best of intentions at heart, find themselves ground down by forces beyond their control, and make choices that often lead to disastrous consequences.   Though Adam employs the sort of classic storytelling approach that Nova Scotia's known for, these songs present an updated and unflinching look at the very modern, very troubled community he's called home for his whole life. It's a kind of Nova Scotia noir or East Coast gothic style that, for Adam, accurately reflects the smouldering heartbreak and desperation that he feels is the inescapable undercurrent of small town life in contemporary Atlantic Canada.   As powerful as it is, however, this album very nearly never was. After hitting a low point in his career which found him legitimately preparing to quit the music business that's been his lifelong pursuit, he was suddenly seized with the compulsion to begin exploring and documenting his home community through this inspired suite of homespun musical narratives.   In this conversation, Adam lets us in on how this album came along at the strangest time and was lit by a most surprising spark; he recalls some of the true-life characters and places which inspired these tales; discusses the underlying cultural forces driving these shadowy East Coast yarns; and gives us the inside track on some of the artists who've inspired him creatively - from Springsteen to The Trailer Park Boys to Adam's longtime friend and collaborator, Matt Mays.   Hidden Track is a CKUA production, and is presented by Bent Stick Brewing.

Lindsay Duncan says she is a photographer, "of people and the things they make - musicians, writers, artists...I view my position as a photographer as a liaison between the public and the artists' private moments; a position that requires artists to trust my intent and respect their work."I am most familiar with Lindsay's work shooting musicians, but she does everything from professional headshots to commercial photography. She is also fresh off the road from photographing Jagmeet Singh on the campaign trail leading up to the 2021 federal election. We first crossed paths at a studio session where she captured some wonderful photos of Matt Mays and myself while I was interviewing him.  Her warm energy felt like a match for something I was dreading: new headshots.  Does everyone dread new headshots as much as I do?  I hope I look like this for awhile because I HATE HEADSHOTS and I was so thrilled with how they turned out. Find a few here: https://www.facebook.com/BurketalksWhen I was getting ready to launch this podcast, she was the first person that came to mind to help me update my image a bit.  I thought, if I'm going to be awkward as hell anyway, I better hire someone who will make me feel comfortable. If anything, she seemed like a photographer I could at least enjoy hanging out with for an afternoon (and that we did).  In this episode, you'll hear Lindsay talk about her  techniques in photography as she refrains from influencing or directing the subjects she photographs and her respect for humans as subjects vs. objects.  Find out more about Lindsay and her work:http://www.lindsayduncanphoto.com/https://www.instagram.com/lindsayinmotion

When Jordan Paul, now known as Ellis Meek released ‘Strange,' there was no indication it would turn out to be a quarantine anthem, with a spot on BBC in the South West, and in Le Soundtrack's ‘Best New Canadian Indie Releases.' The track is a call for compassion and empathy, and feels as though it was a direct reaction to the week of April it was released on; just as a global pandemic was peeking its head out to the whole world. In actuality, it was written when Jordan Paul was 17—a young empath just coming to terms with the often dark nature of things, and the fear-based responses people can resort to in lieu of love and connection. October 30th's follow-up “Archetype X” only furthers the singer-songwriter's sentiments, as Paul's oft-layered lyricism is pointedly laid bare in a song that explores the act of journeying inwards for therapeutic release. “Archetype X” was written in a self-processed act of therapy, and comes as the ultimate evolution in Hamiltonian Jordan Paul's distinctive musical style. The song boasts notes of delicate and exploratory alt. folk/rock, taking an expansive journey well beyond its subtle indie-folk roots. After Paul belts out the final refrain in the electrified coda, “Archetype X” fades into a chattering of hazy distortion and thrumming space echo—the welcome and careful calm to ease us back to reposeful contemplation before the song fades into the ether. “Jordan Paul's voice shines like an otherworldly, sophisticated diamond, hypnotic and sure. And with his newest single, he gives us another taste of something we can't get enough of.” Brent Jensen, radio personality, author, and host of No Sleep ‘til Sudbury “Archetype X” is the third release of 2020 from Jordan Paul, recorded at Jonathan Anderson's (Andy Shauf, Aidan Knight, Said the Whale) Protection Island Studios in Maple Ridge, BC, and mastered by Noah Mintz (Marcy Playground, Broken Social Scene, Matt Mays). We'll hear Ellis Meek's song, Archetype X, during the podcast. Find more of his music on Spotify, YouTube, and other streaming platforms. Follow his musical journal on Facebook and Instagram. Another fun-filled afternoon of new music and information, plus a couple of spotlight sets of songs by folks we love, but don’t play all that often because they don’t often release new music or come to Winnipeg, Kim Barlow and Rory McLeod; tired of waiting for an excuse to play them, we’ll just do it because we feel like it.

This is a song I wrote called "What About Us". Here are the lyrics. What about us This is a song, about a girl, who doesn’t know.... That I, have written a song about her.... So hypothetically, this could be, about anyone in this room,.... If you’re a girl, and in this room..... She turned to me, an said, will you write a song about me.... So here’s your stupid song, but you’ll never know, like I never knew.... The way I felt, about your feelings.. Chorus So what about you what about me what about us What about this what about that what about trust What about love what about life What about man what about wife What about truth, what about strife What about lust What about us This is a song, about a girl Who isn’t perfect, who isn’t beautiful Who I don’t love And she campaigns for weird political parties And I think that’s really cute Which might make me a sexist But I don’t care Because I like her, just the way she is Chorus Bridge So what about you what about me what about us What about a family tree Of your dad and your mom and my dad and my mom And your little sister who looks just like you And my little brother who looks like me too And your older brother who don’t like me much But I think that’s cause I saw me touching you so softly On that summer day But what’s a summer day Without softly touching your soft skin Anyway Outro This is a song, about a girl And I think I’m going to tell her Here are my influences. Regina Spektor, Panic at the Disco, Neil Young, Radiohead, John Mayer, Pearl Jam, The Killers, U2,Metric, Tragically Hip, Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Elton John, Those guys from the movie Once, Jenny Owens Young, Lights, The Midway State, Neverending White Lights, Paramore, The Weakerthans, Wintersleep, Audioslave, Smashing Pumpkins, Sloan, Semisonic, Treble Charger, Ill Scarlett, Our Lady Peace, Raine Maida, Phish, Dave Matthews Band, Oasis, Nellie Mckay, Muse, Matt Mays, Matt Good, Kanye West, Jonathan Coulton, John Butler Trio, Jason Mraz, Jeremy Fisher, Incubus, Imogen Heep, Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Foo Fighters, Feist, Elliot Smith, Die Mannequin, CSNY, Counting Crows, Coldplay, The Beatles, Joni Mithell, Something Corporate, The Rocket Summer, Gavin Degraw, Billey Joel, Jack Johnson, Metro Station, Michael Jackson

This week, we're pre-taped, but boy have we got a great show for you in my absence. This is one of those timeless classic episodes that you won't mind listening to over and over again. It doesn't reference any particular time or date, all it does is contain some of the GREATEST MUSIC ON EARTH. We've got some old classics you haven't heard in a while. We even have a theme! Yes, in response to all of those folks who (rightly) complain that we don't play enough great female artists (although I swear, it's pretty close!), this show is a He Said/She Said workshop featuring a full hour of male artists and a full hour of female artists. We're keeping it even! And boy, are there some good ones to hear.

KK takes the wheel for a rare solo show, and does the unthinkable: plays 1.5 hours of great music with no ridiculous arguing. She's trying to ruin the show, I'm sure of it. Hopefully you don't get used to hearing just the best music out there, because the circus will be back in town soon. In the meantime, enjoy it with birthday wishes for Jim Bryson, and great tunes from the likes of The Weakerthans, Leeroy Stagger, Romi Mayes, Matt Mays, and much more!
