Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Jeff Pojanowski. Jeff is a professor at Notre Dame Law School, where he teaches and writes about philosophy of law and legal interpretation. He also writes occasional columns for The Pillar. He has been living happily in Northern Indiana after escaping Washington, D.C., 15 years ago.Jeff's Music Pick: Turnpike TroubadoursThis is a rarity for Political Beats, in which we present a show driven largely by our guest's preferences. Jeff Pojanowski joined us previously for Pavement and Crowded House and by now we trust his musical judgement. For quite a while, he's been selling us hard on taking up the career of Turnpike Troubadours for an episode. With the recent release of a new album, and additional endorsements of the band from others in our sphere, it seemed a good time to take him up on the offer. We're awfully glad we did.The Turnpike Troubadours, hailing from Oklahoma, have become one of the leading purveyors of Red Dirt country music, featuring songs that are masterclasses in storytelling, instrumentation, and authenticity. Look, if you don't like fiddle, you might be in the wrong place. Formed in 2005 by frontman Evan Felker and bassist R. C. Edwards, the band's early years were shaped by relentless touring. The first album, Bossier City, is almost more a collection of demos. The group wasn't quite fully formed yet. But on Diamonds & Gasoline (2010), everything began to click into place. As the band matured, their songwriting deepened without losing its raw immediacy. Albums like Goodbye Normal Street (2012) and The Turnpike Troubadours (2015) would be highlights of any band's career. Felker's songwriting stands out not just for its precision (though occasional lyrical duplicity can leave the listener wondering exactly what a song is about), but for its ability to evoke vivid rural landscapes. These are songs about places and towns that many Americans easily can picture in their mind. Musically, Kyle Nix's fiddle and Ryan Engleman's guitar work offered a dynamic counterpoint that always serves the song first. The band's career wasn't without turbulence, of course. After the 2017 release of A Long Way from Your Heart, the band entered a hiatus amid Felker's battle with alcoholism. Fans cheered the band's 2022 comeback, marked by the release of the Shooter Jennings-produced A Cat in the Rain. It's impossible to listen to songs on the record without putting them in the context of Felker's troubles. It's an album that likely had to be made, however, to bring the band to 2025's The Price of Admission, a release that all three of your hosts come to praise. There's probably still a lot of music left in the tank for Turnpike Troubadours, and there's no better time than now to jump on board to discover what you might have been missing.
Send us a textNoeline Hofmann burst onto the scene in 2024 with the duet release of her single “Purple Gas”, after it caught the attention of Zach Bryan. At just 21 years old, Noeline knows the vitality of building community as a young artist. JD Marsh is back and knocking on the door of the elusive Tigs Bits Five-Timers Club. We catch up on his journey from chili cookoffs to catering MLB teams, the new Pantano BBQ rub line, and what sets South Texas flavor apart. We also dive into Turnpike Troubadours, cooking waist-deep in the ocean, and why brisket ain't what it used to be. Plus: underrated concert venues, low-sodium boil secrets, and the best BBQ spot outside of Texas (yeah, he said it).
From Lorde's triumphant return to The Doobie Brothers teaming up with Mavis Staples, May's releases signal the perfect start to summer's soundtrack."What Was That" by Lorde kicks off what many are calling a "Lorde summer," with the New Zealand artist returning to the sound that made her famous. Her stripped-down, melodic approach to examining a relationship's end showcases her unique vocal abilities without unnecessary flourishes. Meanwhile, Miley Cyrus continues her winning streak with "End of the World," an anthemic pop masterpiece with nostalgic 80s vibes reminiscent of The Go-Go's and The Bangles.Star Wars fans have reason to celebrate with two May 4th releases that demonstrate the holiday's growing cultural significance. Labyrinth's "SWMF" and Apache's remix of John Williams' iconic "Duel of the Fates" showcase how orchestral elements can blend seamlessly with electronic production – bridging centuries of musical evolution in single tracks. The mix continues with The Jonas Brothers' "Love Me to Heaven" and Turnpike Troubadours' introspective "Heaven Passing Through," which reminds us to treasure life's fleeting moments. Amine brings summer vibes with "Vacay," while legendary artists The Doobie Brothers prove they've still got it alongside Mavis Staples on "Walk This Road."For alternative music fans, The Minus Five delivers "happy rock" with "Words and Birds," Turnstile bends genres on "Never Enough," and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard experiments with orchestral sounds on "Phantom." The collection closes with Wavves' energetic Travis Barker-produced surf rock on "Goner."Whether you're planning your summer playlist, seeking graduation anthems, or simply exploring what's new in music, this diverse collection captures artists at different points in their creative journeys, all delivering tracks worthy of repeated listening. Rolling Stone writer and New York Times editor Josh Crutchmer has spent years in the Red Dirt music scene, from the back of bars and concert halls to being on stage at Cain's Ballroom. He also recently gave Oklahoma State University's fall commencement speech.Matthew Viriyapah spoke to him about his journey from Oklahoma State University student to covering artists like The Great Divide, Turnpike Troubadours, and attending more than 30 shows of Wyatt Flores for his latest book, Red Dirt Unplugged.
As has happened quite often in the past 10 years or so, my curation of private showcase rooms at the Folk Alliance International Conference has yielded connections that provide continuing collaborations and opportunities for engagement. Case in point… Chrislyn Lawrence and Mike “Mac” McClure also now known as the musical duo “Crow and Gazelle.” Booking the duo at the 2002 Conference and subsequently for other listening room series in the Heartland has brought another welcome addition to my so called “Americana/Roots Music” family. Mike McClure made his name as one of the founders of the Oklahoma Red Dirt Music Scene and producer of such Tasty Brew Music favorites as the Turnpike Troubadours and Cross Canadian Ragweed. Chrislyn, worked behind the scenes of that music world in supporting roles, including as a booking agent. Circumstances kept them from pursuing a connection when they first met in 2003, but fate intervened and they've been professionally and personally a team since 2018. Their mission is to deconstruct the idea of separateness… that we humans are not separate from divinity… we are holy, everything and infinite. Enjoy this on air conversation with Crow and Gazelle in support of a Heartland appearance for the Green Guitar Folk House Listening Room Series.
Certain to encounter only tolerance and expanded horizons, Lex shares the Turnpike Troubadours and Allison Russell with friends.

I love new music, so I am taking this week to focus on my favorite acts that only started their careers in this new century. ABOUT DYLAN At just 15, Dylan Rhys is already making waves as a standout in the next generation of Texas musicians. Embracing his musical passion from an early age, Dylan picked up guitar at nine, seamlessly integrating vocals shortly thereafter. It was during the early days of COVID-19 quarantine that he created his first stage by streaming his “Corona Concert Series: Live from the Driveway” for family and friends. In the summer of 2022, Dylan entered a months-long open mic competition hosted by Dosey Doe in The Woodlands, Texas, winning first place out of over 80 contestants spanning a wide range of ages and genres. Opportunities to perform at local venues quickly followed, and he can now be found sharing his original music and a deep list of country covers throughout Central and Southeast Texas. Influenced by the likes of Shane Smith and the Saints, Flatland Cavalry and Turnpike Troubadours, and developing a sound similar to Dylan Gossett, Sam Barber and Wyatt Flores, Dylan strives to portray authenticity in his lyrics and sound. His youthful approach to songwriting and confident, charismatic stage presence have provided him the opportunity to open for national touring artists Jon Stork, Jesse Daniel, Matt Castillo, and Bailey Rae, and to share the stage in renowned venues such as Dosey Doe – The Big Barn and The Kenney Store. Currently in his freshman year, Dylan balances his music pursuits with a full course load of classes, is a lefty pitcher on the baseball team, and plays the double bass in his school's orchestra. In his free time, he enjoys being a kid, soaking up life experiences to turn into future songs. Look out for his first single debuting soon! MUSIC Linkin Park are set to make a big announcement today in front of a live audience, but beforehand those in attendance had to sign a waiver. The waiver states that there is an agreement to be transported to and from the venue. That would suggest that the location of the event is not one that the band is anxious to divulge, even to those attending. Thus, it would be harder for people to track down exactly where it is happening and perhaps discern something in advance from the location. Green Day were pulled from the stage for security reasons two verses into their fifth song, "Longview," last night at Comerica Park in Detroit. Dan Smalley may just now be making a name for himself, but he sings with the voice of experience. The Alaska born military brat who came of age in Shreveport, Louisiana, has a way of making you believe what he's singing. Smalley expresses a fresh take on Country music that knows tradition, inspired by the greats of the genre and infused with the swampy sounds of his roots, the Gospel of hardwood church pews and the impassioned delivery of Soul music. Artists like Merle Haggard, Ray Charles, Waylon Jennings, Al Green, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and other legends provided inspiration, while the against-the-grain success of Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson drew him to Nashville. There, he worked with producer Keith Stegall on his Debut EP IF I'M BEING HONEST which came out in 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic. From there Smalley navigated in and out of Major Record deals and honed his direction after producing his first Full-Length Record THE STATE OF COUNTRY MUSIC, set to release Independently(Smallside Records) through Onerpm May 10, 2024. As a songwriter, artists like Ashley McBryde(Grammy Nominated album “Never Will”) Trace Adkins, Randall King, Jerrod Nieman, Makayla Lynn, Dillon Carmichael and others have included Smalley co-writes on their recent releases. Dan's delivery on stage has landed him on bills alongside Willie Nelson, Allison Kraus, Turnpike Troubadours, Ashley McBryde, Tim McGraw, Carrie Underwood, Eli Young Band, Justin Moore, Dwight Yoakam, Randy Rogers Band, Ryan Bingham and a list of notable others both in the US and abroad. Smalley has played some of the greatest festivals in the world(Faster Horses, Country Fest, Frank Brown Songwriter, Nashville Nights International Songwriter Festival)and is making his “Buckle and Boots”(Manchester) Debut in May 2024 as well as his Heartland Fest(Denmark) Debut in June of 2024 after his most recent UK/DK Spring Tour through Glasgow, Belfast, England and Denmark. After telling the story of the musicians who shaped his Oklahoma roots in his 2020 book Red Dirt, journalist and author Josh Crutchmer saw an opportunity to dig deeper into the artists that shaped independent roots music. His second book, The Motel Cowboy Show, is about the Americana music in the American West that began with cowboy poetry and lives on today in artists like Reckless Kelly, Micky and the Motorcars, and Ned LeDoux. A New York Times editor by day, Crutchmer also spent three years chronicling the return of the Turnpike Troubadours to the stage and studio for Rolling Stone, as well as the final concert for Robert Earl Keen. In this episode, he joins Rhett to talk about the path that led him to writing, how he approaches his role as a storyteller, and the personal obstacle he uncovered while working on his latest book.
