Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

The incredible guitarist Duke Levine joins me on the show today. Back in the 90's and early 2000's when I was just getting started, Duke was putting out all these really amazing twangy instrumental guitar records. He actually started out as almost a fusion guy on his first album, but pretty quickly veered off into this highly original guitar style that has elements of blues, jazz, country, bebop and influences like Roy Buchanan, Ray Flacke, Albert Lee, I hear Wes Montgomery and Jerry Reed in there as well. The first record I heard of his was called “Country Soul Guitar” and I feel like at that time, the early 90's, no one was really playing anything like that. He's primarily a tele player and just has an incredible touch and tone that makes him a totally unique player. He put out a couple more records in that vein, but pretty quickly got scooped up as a sideperson, playing guitar for artists like Shawn Colvin, Peter Wolf, J Geils, Bill Morrissey, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Slaid Cleaves, Jonatha Brooke, and eventually his current employer, the untouchable Bonnie Raitt. The hired gun gigs really became his bread and butter and he spent the better part of the last 25 years touring with alot of those folks. Duke came up in the New England club scene, and has basically stayed in the area his whole life. During the pandemic, he put out a string of really interesting videos featuring stellar guitar playing that you can watch, and some of those videos became what makes up his most recent and amazing EP “Left To My Own Devices”.You can get info on all of Duke's activities as well as his tour dates with Bonnie Raitt over at dukelevine.com - Enjoy my conversation with Duke Levine! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodesThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Today you have the pleasure of learning more about Slade Cleaves.  He picked these five records:   SWORDFISHTROMBONES – TOM WAITS NEBRASKA - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN LIBRARY OF CONGRESS RECORDINGS - WOODY GUTHRIE MISSION OF THE CROSSROADS PALMS - STEVE FORBERT DEAR DANGER- BILLY HARVEY   Joseph Hudak of Rolling Stone Country calls Cleaves “a master storyteller, one influenced not by the shine of pop-culture but by the dirt of real life.”   While he released a handful of recordings during the early '90s, he gained significant notice with No Angel Knows, which was released on Rounder's Philo subsidiary in 1997. Joined by former Lucinda Williams guitarist and producer Gurf Morlix, and combined his interest in folk songs, early rock and roll, and traditional country music into an amalgamation of styles becoming known at that time as Americana. After reading in Rolling Stone about Bruce Springsteen's inspirations for the Nebraska album, he climbed into his parents' attic to rediscover the treasure trove of albums which he recalled hearing as a child – Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry - and which became his guide to becoming a stellar songwriter. After signing with Jimmy LaFave's Music Road Records, he issued Everything You Love Will Be Taken Away (2009, featuring liner notes from fan Stephen King), the two-disc Sorrow & Smoke: Live at the Horseshoe Lounge (2011), and Still Fighting the War (2013), produced by beloved Austin guitarist Scrappy Jud Newcomb. The album was praised as "one of the year's best albums" by American Songwriter and "carefully crafted, . . . songs about the struggles of the heart in hard times" by the Wall Street Journal. The New York Daily News called his music "a treasure hidden in plain sight," while the Austin Chronicle declared, "there are few contemporaries that compare. He's become a master craftsman on the order of Guy Clark and John Prine." I would like to mention that there are no advertisements in this podcast.  I have a truckload of fun doing this but it takes at least 20 hours to research, listen, record, edit, and produce each episode.  If you are willing to help, you can support on my Patreon which is https://www.patreon.com/MyTopFiveRecords Close your eyes.  You've got your top 5 records on your iPhone and you are doing chores around your house.  What 5 records do you have? www.slaid.com

Harmoni Kelley is a nationally touring bassist and vocalist from Austin, Texas, currently on tour with country music superstar, Kenny Chesney. A self-taught musician, Harmoni picked up the bass guitar at age 17 and hasn't looked back. With over two decades of experience both on the road and in the studio, she has mastered the art of playing by ear and understands the importance of being able to lay back, listen and play for the song.During her time as a young musician in Austin, Harmoni worked her way up through the ranks and spent time both in the studio and on the road with local legends Fastball, James McMurtry, Slaid Cleaves and Bob Schneider to name a few. Those years proved to be the most important in starting Harmoni down the path of honing in on her craft as a bass player and vocalist. She cut her teeth with bands of all musical genres from rock, pop, blues, funk, bluegrass, country and americana. In 2013, Harmoni had the opportunity to make the move to Nashville, TN and jumped at the chance. During her stint in music city, she toured with Hank Williams, Jr., Radney Foster, Bonnie Bishop, Holly Williams and Louise Mandrell. All of her time spent networking and gigging around Nashville would eventually culminate with her call to audition for Kenny Chesney in 2014.Harmoni currently splits time between her hometown of Austin, TX and Nashville, TN. When she's not on the road with Chesney, she continues to tour and do session work with various artists around the country.

New polling shows that, in the wake of the Uvalde school shooting, the Texas gubernatorial race has tightened between Gov. Greg Abbott and Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke. Kaitlin Armstrong, on the run now for over a month in connection with the shooting death of pro cyclist Anna Moria Wilson, may be going by her sister Christine Armstrong's name in New York - she also may have fled to Canada. Austin Police are searching for 11 year old Eimi Estrada, who has been missing since Monday and was last seen in the North Plaza/Rundberg area of North Austin. A 17-year-old with an extensive criminal record was shot by a man he was trying to rob in a Domain parking lot on Tuesday. Austin is rated highly among "equity-rich" metros - meaning that relatively few Austin homeowners owe more on their mortgages than their homes are worth. Texas and Oklahoma, said to be departing the Big 12 for the SEC by 2025, have reportedly moved that goal up a year to 2024. Singer Zac Collier, a Texas A&M alum, has been cut from a National Anthem performance at the College World Series after being seen flashing the anti-UT "horns down" hand sign at the Women's College World Series, in which Texas Softball was a competitor. Weekend live music: Friday shows include Pride At Swan Dive with Sabrina Ellis and more, Tameca Jones in what she bills as her "last public performance" at Antone's, Viben and the Submersibles at the Mohawk, Broncho at Empire Control Room, and Casey Donahew at the Haute Spot. Sunday, the Stay Black And Live music festival day features Ivy Rootz, Charmin Greene, Mama Duke, WC Clark and tons more at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. Austin weather: we snapped a streak of consecutive triple-digit days that lasted over a week on Wednesday, but we're back at it today with a high of 101 expected, and similar and likely longer streaks of 100+ heat are likely coming throughout the summer.

As season two continues, I am thrilled to have John Chipman on the show today.  He has been playing music professionally for over 25 years and has played with an insane amount of musicians from the Resentments (who I so love!), Slaid Cleaves, Band of Heathens, David Grissom (who I think defines what Texas Blues really is), and of course my favorite, Kelley Mickwee.  If you ask me, I think he is a top three drummer here in Austin. He has toured numerous times in Europe and the Far East.  He moved to Austin after studying music and graduating from the University of Oklahoma.  In the 2007-2008 Austin Chronicle Music Awards, he won best drummer.   In Modern Drummer, he passes along some tidbits of what he has learned from other musicians: Never ask of music. When you expect music to do things for you, it will not happen. Music itself is the reward. If any success or fame comes as a result of playing music, be forever thankful, because you have already experienced more than 95% of the people who have ever picked up a pair of drumsticks have. The fewer notes you play, the more money per note you are making. Save your big stuff for the last chorus of the last song in the encore. Never play in a trio with a husband and wife. Never cop an attitude. There is always somebody better than you. If you see someone who might not be up to your personal yardstick, watch even closer, they will teach you something you didn't know.   Late in season one, I implemented quizzes into the mix and this will continue on future podcasts and this will continue for the foreseeable future.  Don't matter what I'm going to ask.  It's all fun and smiles.   If you don't mind heading over to Apple podcasts and giving us a review, we'd sure appreciate it awful good! https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/my-top-five-records/id1494022573   https://thebiggunshow.com/ https://www.facebook.com/thebiggunshowband/ https://www.instagram.com/thebiggunshowband/ https://www.youtube.com/thebiggunshowband

But this episode is not about mutually assured destruction, per se. If I'm missing any other Star Trek episodes that tackle the subject, let me know! It's "The Man in the High Castle," not "Man in the High Tower," and it is indeed based on the novel of the same name, written by Philip K. Dick.Slaid is entirely correct about Star Trek's Nielson ratings in the 60's. When Star Trek aired on NBC, its ratings were low, and the network cancelled it in its third season. It's useful to keep in mind, however, that at the time the vast majority of TV viewers were watching only three broadcast networks: ABC, CBS, or NBC. So even a show with "low ratings" in the 60's would have commanded a much larger audience than a show with "low ratings" today. So it's kind of hard to make comparisons today. But its true that Star Trek didn't really become the hit show that it is today with its cult following and influence on popular culture until the 70's, when it was in syndication. Is Q, and the coinciding Q Continuum, immortal? The much loved character Q, from Star Trek: Next Generation is an omnipotent being with the ability to control time and space at will. Q is part of a collective, the Q Continuum, which exists in another dimension not accessible or understandable to humans. Q is not a benevolent being. He is better described as bored than benevolent. Although he has a fascination with Picard and with humanity and its historical outcomes, he is at times antagonistic and arbitrarily cruel. Trelane, the antagonist of this episode, "The Squire of Gothos," is a precursor to Q. The question of whether or not Q can decline or die has been recently raised as a possible plot line in the newest season of Star Trek: Picard, currently airing on Paramount Plus.

With time on his hands during the pandemic lockdown, roots music troubadour Ken Tizzard decided to create a new album comprising the fresh versions of cover songs he had worked up on his solo shows over the past decade. Tizzard explains that “initially I told my fans that I was going to record all these cover tunes I've been playing at Whiskey Wednesday [his popular weekly residency at a pub in Campbellford, Ontario for 10 years. It was to be just me and my acoustic guitar, a way to give them some new music.” “When I let the news out, people started responding – ‘hey, if there's anything I can do to help?,'” Ken recalls. “Then the idea just hit me. Make it an open call to everybody. That was my next Facebook post, inviting anybody who wanted to be involved. ‘If you have any way to record and if you like any of these songs, email me and we'll talk about what you can do.' The response just snowballed!” Tizzard posted a list of the 13 songs he had in mind for the record, and then, he explains, “I started putting the puzzle together. I got a big sheet of paper, listing the songs, the guests, what instruments they played, and started assembling it.” The novel creative process involved Ken recording a rough demo of each tune, vocal and acoustic guitar only, and sending that out to the volunteering musical guests, giving them complete freedom for the parts they would send in. “There were only a couple of instances where I went back and asked the player for a change,” he notes. “That is remarkable given that everybody played without hearing what the other guests played.” The resulting collection of songs that is All Together Now is both varied and fresh. Many of the chosen tunes date back to the ‘80s, the decade in which Ken came of age, with classic songs by Tears For Fears, The Boomtown Rats, The Clash, The Cure, Billy Bragg, and R.E.M. making the cut. He goes further back for gems by Neil Young, George Jones, Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon, while “Green Mountains Ann Me” by Americana fave Slaid Cleaves is the most contemporary tune. Tackling Dylan's “Don't Think Twice” was a no-brainer, as Ken explains “Dylan has been with me since I started listening to music. He has been a high influence on myself and so many people it only seemed right.” The formidable cast list of collaborators on All Together Now includes some leading lights of Canadian rock and roots music. As the propulsive bassist in Canrock favourites the Watchmen and Thornley over the past three decades, Ken Tizzard has earned major peer respect in that world, while the prolific roots-based solo career he has pursued over the past 15 years has brought similar esteem in the folk community. Danny Greaves (The Watchmen), Donald Williams (Big Wreck), Dave Gunning, Sandy Morris (The Wonderful Grand Band), Creighton Doane, and Sean Panting. Also contributing were Tizzard fans in Canada and the US that he has yet to meet in person. Adding invaluable assistance on the mixing side was Mike Turner (Our Lady Peace), with the renowned Noah Mintz mastering. “Mike and I had a massive task assembling everything,” says Ken. “It'd be like ‘we've got a flute, a fiddle, a harmonica, guitar, slide guitar and piano playing on the one song. How do we make it work?' Mike did an amazing job.” Ken acknowledges that the presence of his musical friends on All Together Now means this doesn't sound like a regular Ken Tizzard solo album. “The essence of these songs, the way they are, comes from everybody else, not from me,” he observes. He remains justifiably proud of both the musical results and the imaginative creative process. “For this record, I had to put professional expectations away and accept it as a fantastic social experiment that produced some really good music in a time when people needed a chance to do that.” (Press Release)

The Terror Of Tiny Town". Escuchar audio

I caught up with singer-songwriter/multi-instrumentalists Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore at the 2020 Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans. Due to circumstances beyond our control, we were booted out of the Media Room I had reserved so that NPR’s Anne Powers could do an impromptu interview with Ani DiFranco. No worries, The Mastersons went with the flow and we conducted our conversation in my hotel room while they were perched on my bedside with my lavalier mic attached to my water bottle handle. They could not have been more gracious and accommodating. When they're not touring the world as valued longtime members of Steve Earle's band the Dukes, the musical and marital twosome make inspired albums of their own emotionally vivid, deeply humanistic songs. Experience is something they have aplenty. Prior to coming together as a musical duo (they married in 2009), Masterson and Whitmore were both seasoned veterans of the Americana and Texas music scenes. Masterson spent his teens playing the blues in Houston clubs before landing hired-gun gigs with acts as varied as Jack Ingram and Son Volt, while the Denton-born Whitmore grew up performing in a family band with her folk- singer dad, Alex, and sister Bonnie (now a solo singer-songwriter) before playing fiddle and violin on dozens of album sessions for the likes of Bruce Robison, Slaid Cleaves, and Shooter Jennings. By their own admission, they are here to “serve the songs.” The Mastersons, who now call Los Angeles home after stints in Austin, Brooklyn and Terlingua, Texas; recorded their soon to be released “No Time for Love Songs” at L.A.'s legendary Sunset Sound Recorders with Shooter Jennings; it was engineered and mixed by five-time Grammy Award-winning engineer, Ryan Freeland. Shooter had recruited The Mastersons to play on his albums Family Man (2012) and The Other Life (2013), and they’d recently reunited to work on the now Grammy award winning Tanya Tucker's comeback album While I'm Livin', which Jennings co-produced with Brandi Carlile. As our country becomes more divided," Chris observes, "it makes it harder to connect with loved ones and friends that disagree. Fundamentally we all want the same things, but we're pitted against each other by extreme rhetoric on both sides. If we can lead with kindness and empathy, there is a way out." "Only by cataloging and acknowledging loss and grief can we move forward with gratitude for what we have." I agree 100%. Enjoy this conversation with Chris Masterson and Eleanor Whitmore, The Mastersons!

A classically trained musician, James Lee Baker fuses influences from acoustic singer-songwriters like David Mead, Ellis Paul, John Gorka, Gregory Alan Isakov, Bob Dylan, and Slaid Cleaves. He embraces open tunings to create an unconventional but welcoming sound and timbre to his playing. Trained briefly by Richard Gilewitz, a renowned fingerstyle guitar player, James Lee's fingerstyle guitar playing is rich and melodic, pulling listeners into memorable motifs and atmospheres. In 2017, Baker released a Texas-inspired full-length project called “Home Again.” Harnessing his experience in technology, Baker recruited talented studio session musicians, accessing performers from Los Angeles, Canada, The United Kingdom, and Denver. “Home Again” is a Country-flavored Americana album, rich with instrumentation like dobro, lap steel, fiddle, and harmonica. Current single, “Disappear for the Weekend” is receiving airplay and charting on the New Music Weekly and Airplay Today country charts.  The same is also true for his previous single, “Cowtown Blues.” In March 2018, he released an EP of Folk/Americana songs called The Canadian River. The single of the same title placed #23 on the FolkDJ radio charts in April of 2018, and the song “Two Cageless Birds” went on to be selected for the John O'Hara Songwriting Performance Grant. www.facebook.com/jamesleebaker www.twitter.com/jlbakermusic www.instagram.com/jamesleebaker www.soundcloud.com/jamesleebaker www.youtube.com/jamesleebaker www.jamesleebaker.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
