Episode 291: Thirty years into her late-blooming music career, Kim Richey feels like Americana music's favorite aunt. She's hip, youthful, incredibly kind and brimming with ideas and good words, many of which make it into fresh songs. She's been co-writing a good bit lately, with the likes of Don Henry, Ashley Campbell and Aaron Lee Tasjan. New work, mingled with unrecorded catalog, hand-picked with producer Doug Lancio, led to her first new LP in six years, Every New Beginning. Also in this hour, Oklahoma songwriter and band leader Jared Deck talks about his fascinating double life as a touring artist and, since 2020, a member of the OK House of Representatives.

Aaron Lee Tasjan has a pretty simple writing process: he gets up around 8am, has a glass of water, and pets his cat. Then he writes. But not every day. "I only write when my body tells me to, when I can go off yesterday's fumes," he told me. And in one of the best rituals I've ever heard, Tasjan always writes with a pencil--but never uses the eraser. "I hate erasers," he says.Tasjan lives in Nashville, where the Frist Art Museum serves as a tremendous source of inspiration for his songs. His new album Stellar Evolution is out now on Blue Elan Records.

Aaron Lee Tasjan, a terrific singer-songwriter who was a guest on the Songfacts Podcast in 2021, turned me on to Julia Cannon, another very gifted songwriter who also produces, sings and plays multiple instruments. Cannon is highly introverted, so her promotion is mostly word-of-mouth. Once you hear what she has to offer, you'll probably spread the word too. "How many issues can I blame on my absentee dad?" That's one of many questions Cannon asks on her new album, How Many. We'll start with that song, then get into some other songs from her catalog, find out her songwriting and production philosophies, and learn about her move from Alaska to Boston, where she studied at the Berklee College of Music. https://www.juliacmusic.com/ https://www.songfacts.com/ https://www.facebook.com/songfacts https://twitter.com/Songfacts http://pantheonpodcasts.com/ https://twitter.com/pantheonpods Hosted and Edited by Corey O'Flanagan https://twitter.com/ofe1818 https://www.instagram.com/coreyofe/ corey@songfacts.com Songfacts Podcast Spotify Playlist https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3IThMW5yB8XnFh5cS2gTxR?si=KAhiqWRcSIy5uxb2sZPFTA This show is part of Pantheon Podcasts. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

We kick off Season 7 this week with the very remarkable singer and songwriter Aaron Lee Tasjan. Aaron has released a string of compelling and original solo albums over the past decade. They are all unique and interesting, but the last 3 or 4 are real gems, both in the writing and the incredible production and delivery with Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan! being the latest release. Aaron has had an interesting path to where he's at now, starting out playing in bands and jazz band at high school, and toying with a career as a jazz guitarist. As he realized his real passion was for songwriting, he left his jazz studies behind and moved to New York. He joined or started various bands there like The Madison Square Gardeners (great band name), and Semi-Precious Weapons. He also had stints as a side-person to artists like Marc Cohn and even The New York Dolls! Eventually, Aaron relocated to Nashvile and started his solo career in earnest - he's managed to stay true to his own unique sound but has also evolved in really interesting ways with each new project. He's collaborated with folks like Sean Lennon, Jack White, Tim Easton and Lilly Hiatt and is currently in the middle of completing his next album, and we get into that process as well. You can keep track of all of his work plus his upcoming tour dates at: aaronleetasjan.comBe sure to listen to the accompanying Songs Playlist which contains some of the artist's work, plus many of the songs we discuss on the show:Playlist on Spotify / Playlist on Apple MusicIf you enjoyed this episode, please consider supporting the show with a donation or Patreon subscriptionThe show's website can be found at www.makersandshakerspodcast.comYour fearless host, Steve Dawson can be found at www.stevedawson.ca Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/mmasspodcast. Perhaps there exists nothing more beautiful than when beauty is mixed with sadness. Add in some world-class musical talent, the type of harmony singing only possible between siblings, and the benefit of the 10,000-foot view of life gleaned by formative years in flying machines and you have a starting point for The Whitmore Sisters. The elder, Eleanor, has been making music for years as one-half of The Mastersons and performing and recording as a member of Steve Earle's band, the Dukes. The younger of the pair, Bonnie, has been making a name for herself with a number of solo albums full of fearless songwriting and tours with the likes of James McMurtry. Although close, the Whitmore sisters hadn't recorded together in an official capacity until the Covid-19 pandemic presented a silver lining opportunity in the form of a self-imposed Covid bubble of isolation and time away from their normally-busy schedules as working musicians. With music touring, recording, and nearly everything else shut down, Elanor's husband, guitarist Chris Masterson, challenged Elanor and Bonnie to use the break wisely and finally get to work as a duo in order to feature their ample talents. With Masterson producing, The Whitmore Sisters conjured their debut album, Ghost Stories, in the midst of shutdowns and once-in-a-century uncertainty, and the results are self-evident and reflective of both their upbringing and their status as roots rock royalty. The Whitmore Sisters' father was a Navy pilot and folk singer, and the album's opener, “Learn to Fly,” reflects life as experienced in the unmatched freedom and peril of flight. As for the other half of their family tree, their mother was an opera singer, which makes for the perfect bloodline to imbue the real-life tragedy of the loss of a pair of Bonnie's former romantic partners - one of whom was singer Justin Townes Earle, who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2020 - into songs like “Friends We Leave Behind.” There is also a take on their friend Aaron Lee Tasjan's “Big Heart Sick Mind” and a cover of the Paul McCartney-penned and Everly Brothers-sung “On the Wings of a Nightingale” to complement their original compositions. Ghost Stories has the beauty, the sadness, the wings, and the joy of life in its eleven songs, standing as a strong and long-overdue debut from The Whitmore Sisters.

The Whitmore sisters are a duo made of Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore, two sisters who have both made incredible careers for themselves in the music industry. Older sister Eleanor is half of the duo “The Mastersons” with her husband Chris. She's also toured with Steve Earle for years, and worked with Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings on the recent album by Tanya Tucker “While I'm Living.” Bonnie is an accomplished musician herself living in Austin Texas, and has worked with artists like Hayes Carll, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Aaron Lee Tasjan to name a few. They recently teamed up to record an album together, and it sounds phenomenal. I had a chance to chat with them about the album, I hope ya dig it!

Ryan Anderson gallops into The Marinade. Ryan is the lead singer and principal songwriter for the band Bendigo Fletcher, whose latest record Fits of Laughter is one of our favorites of the year.  This episode is the third in our Americanafest 2021 series. I was fortunate to travel to Nashville, TN, for a weekend in September. I got to spend time with wonderful creatives and saw outstanding sets from AHI, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Van Plating, Tre Burt, Great Peacock, Matthew Fowler, and several more. If you ever have the chance to go to Americanafest, do it. The folks whose music you love are not only playing sets all over town but also just mingling in the crowd. And, to a person the folks I got to meet and hang out with was a pure delight. This conversation with Ryan got real deep real fast and we are so excited to bring it your way.

On the cover of his breakthrough album Silver Tears, Aaron Lee Tasjan is a zen looking rhinestone cowboy, blazing with light in a mirror ball suit. On the stereo, his music blazes with quirky observations, lush romanticism and psychedelia. He's one of the most fascinating country rockers in Americana music, and this hour he sits down with a Nashville DJ who knows him well. Since moving to Music City in 2013  Aaron Lee Tasjan has grown in stature and renown in two simultaneous, mutually reinforcing ways. In traditional fashion, he's been praised by critics and curators, landing media spots like Daytrotter sessions and NPR. And on the inside track, he's become a beloved enabler of the EAst Nashville music renaissance, collaborating and supporting lesser-known artists and side musicians. People just really really like the guy. He's self-effacing and mellow. So it's almost shocking when you see him on stage, his mirrored suit sparkling, making moody, sensuous, tuneful country rock and roll. The album's uptown artsy qualities become a lot more comprehensible when you learn that Tasjan came to Music City after many years establishing himself in New York, where he was in several well loved bands, including - as a sideman anyway - glam punk icons the New York Dolls. And that's all after turning down a scholarship to study jazz guitar at the Berklee College of Music. This is one multi-faceted musician. This week, I cede the microphone to my friend and Nashville radio colleague Gina Frary Bacon for an in-depth conversation with Tasjan. She's a DJ on independent radio station WXNA and a career TV producer who's had plenty of experience herself with the New York music scene.  Also, Berklee College of Music's Panos Panay on the latest in Music, Money and Metadata.
