Newfoundland-based musicians Catherine Allan and Andrew James O'Brien are the couple behind Juno-nominated band Fortunate Ones. The band's latest album, That Was You and Me, released early in June of 2022. Fortunate Ones recently embarked on a tour alongside fellow East Coast artists, The Once and Old Man Luedecke. That tour, dubbed the Anchors Up! Tour finds the band performing shows in Alberta in late November 2022.   The duo behind this incredible folk outlet took time out of their busy tour schedule to chat with Hidden Track host Grant Stovel for a look at their personal and artistic journeys thus far. Andrew and Catherine tell us about how the pandemic caused them to look deep within themselves (and each other) in a whole new way creatively, how the songs on this new record took shape during a secluded summer in a seaside clapboard house, the great Newfoundland tradition of songcraft, staying grounded by running marathons and doing yoga, and the excitement of touring in a bus for the first time ever.

Grammy Award-winning bluegrass songwriter and performer Tim O’Brien joins our Tim O’Brien to talk about his own musical journey and about America’s bluegrass musical heritage. http://traffic.libsyn.com/shapingopinion/Bluegrass_II_auphonic.mp3   According to the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation, America’s bluegrass music can trace its roots to the 1600s when people emigrated to America from Ireland, Scotland, and England brought. The Foundation says they brought with them the basic styles of music that give us the bluegrass music we know today. The music took hold in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia, which at the time included what we now know as West Virginia. Bluegrass music has always about stories that reflected the people from these regions. At first it was known simply as country or mountain music. Ironically, it would be the dawn of audio technology that would give bluegrass a new life. In the early 1900s, the invention of the phonograph and then later the dawn of radio introduced bluegrass music to the masses. In the 1920 and ‘30s the Monroe Brothers – Charlie and Bill – made a name for the music and themselves. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, it was Bill Monroe who coined the term “bluegrass” when he called his band Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys. Bill was from the bluegrass state of Kentucky. They thought of this as traditional country music, using a sound that relied on acoustic instruments and vocal harmonies. Another key figure in the development of bluegrass music was Earl Scruggs. Earl joined Monroe’s band in the mid-1940s as a banjo player. His sound gave bluegrass what we now think of as that signature bluegrass sound. Others would make their own imprint on bluegrass, like Lester Flatt from Tennessee, Chubby Wise from Florida, and other instruments would be added to add richness to the bluegrass sound. One includes the resophonic guitar, better known as the dobro. Bluegrass music has been the soundtrack for motion pictures, television shows and has been made popular on radio stations from coast to coast for generations and millions of Americans. Tim first toured nationally in the 1980’s with Colorado bluegrass band Hot Rize. Kathy Mattea scored a country hit with his song Walk The Way The Wind Blows in 1986, and soon more artists like Nickel Creek and Garth Brooks covered his songs. Over the years, Tim has released 15 solo CD’s, as well as collaborations with his sister Mollie O’Brien, songwriter Darrell Scott, and noted old time musician Dirk Powell. He’s performed or recorded with Steve Earle, Mark Knopfler, Bill Frisell, and Steve Martin, and produced records for Yonder Mountain Stringband, David Bromberg, and Canada’s Old Man Luedecke. O’Brien’s solo shows feature his solid guitar, fiddle, and banjo, along with his engaging vocals and harmony from Jan Fabricius. I Quit My Job: A Podcast About Songwriting

The first time Derek and Travis ever toured together they were opening up for Megan Hamilton. Now based in Kingston with her young family and supporting a new record with parent-friendly matinee shows across Ontario, our hosts caught up with her at Phog Lounge in Windsor. Recorded on location in the same place they met all those years ago, this episode features Megan discussing the challengers of balancing a family and an independent music career, the process of putting together a cohesive album, and the way priorities shift as you get older. The youngest of six, Andrew MacLeod is one of only two among his siblings born in his late father Alistair’s homeland of Cape Breton. Inviting Travis and Derek to the West Windsor family home still inhabited by his mother, Andrew spoke to them of the angst of being the youngest, the ties he feels to Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, and the pressures of playing in a band when you should probably have grown up by now. As the frontman for Years of Ernest, sporting a brand new full-length record, Andrew shares some wisdom about the value of working with people you trust and putting your heart into every show. All of David Newberry’s friends are folk musicians, but he can’t stand folk music. Still, fans and music critics have aligned him with the Canadian folk scene, perhaps because of his voice and lyric-driven, often political songs. David visited Travis and Derek to talk about his new record Replacement Things (which has barely an acoustic instrument in sight), the west coast folk scene, the city of Toronto, workplace injuries, and why it’s easier to write music for kids. Old Man Luedecke describes himself as a "songwriting, banjo playing, guitaring, dad." Fatherhood is the central theme of his album, 'Domestic Eccentric' - a collection of songs, recorded with the wonderful Tim O'Brien in a cabin he built on his property in Nova Scotia. When Luedecke and Joel E. Hunt stopped by the studios of Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York, he told Folk Alley that 'Domestic Eccentric' was created in response to his past songs about not having children. Now, with three little ones, he has a new point of view - including being on the road and coming home again.

James Oltean-Lepp grew up in Harrow, the same diminutive town as Derek. His band, James OL & The Villains have been at the centre of a revitalized music scene in Windsor and are the purveyors of what Derek calls “Colch-wave,” a cobbling together of various genres into a unique musical blend emblematic of the sound James has crafted over many years. We sat down with James on a humid evening in Windsor to talk about his process as a writer, his willingness to play with genre, and connecting with people through his music. It's actually magic, taking washed but clumped fiber, putting it through the drum carder and getting fluffy batts ready to spin.  It's a spinning project I only do now and then, after accumulating those piles of fleeces and other fibers ready to blend.  Then I spend several months, in an hour here and there, creating the batts.  After that, the fun begins, as I get to spin them and see what those blends will look like in yarn. In today's podcast, I talk about my recent drumcarding projects, as well as some information for those spinners that may want to buy a carder, or have one that they still haven't worked up the nerve to use. I will be putting pictures of the fiber, before and after on my blog.  Music in the podcast is from Music Alley  and includes Proof of Love by Old Man Luedecke,  also February by The Distants. The Spinners Journal, a book I wrote to help you to document your carding or any spinning project is available to buy at this site.

Not much notable this week other than the long-awaited return of the great David Francey. That's always worth celebrating in song, so we sprinkled him throughout the show. The rest of the show was made up of new, interesting, and just plain wonderful music.
