Meet Jen Boyne, the mastermind behind some of the most dazzling hand-sewn Western and stage wear you've ever seen. From rhinestone-studded suits to capes adorned with album-inspired overlays, her designs are pure showstoppers. Jen's creations have dressed stars like The Trailer Park Boys, Elliott Brood, Christina Martin, and, most recently, Morgan Toney—who shone in her suit at the Boston Tree Lighting! But there's more to Jen than her expert craftsmanship. As a single foster parent, she's weaving more than fabric—she's creating a life filled with generosity, resilience, and love. In this conversation, we explore how fostering has enriched her family and her journey as one of the hardest-working (and funniest) entrepreneurs we've had the pleasure of meeting. (P.S. Elliott BROOD is a three-piece Canadian alternative country band featuring Mark Sasso (lead vocals, guitar, banjo, ukulele, harmonica), Casey Laforet (guitar, lead vocals, backing vocals, bass pedals, keys, ukulele), and Stephen Pitkin (percussion, sampler, backing vocals). Known for embracing a “van life” tour style, the band thrives on exploring global venues and connecting with diverse audiences. Growing up in Windsor, Ontario the band has dazzled us with their talents and storytelling having shared stages with the likes of Wilco, War On Drugs, The Head and the Heart, Blue Rodeo, The Black Crowes, Corb Lund and The Sadies. Their latest albums “Town” and “Country” capture themes of nostalgia and celebration of where they are in their lives today.  In this episode, we go behind the scenes of the music industry, discussing the importance of authentic storytelling through lyrics and why perfection isn't the goal. Fresh off an East Coast tour, Mark and Casey reflect on the influence of Gord Downie, the unique journey of being a Canadian band, and how trust and friendship have fueled their longevity. The father-and-sons trio, The Discarded, are back with their sixth full-length studio album, The Green Door, set to release on November 25, 2024. Leading the album is the energetic first single, "Testify!"—a fiery rock anthem that channels the band's signature intensity and passion set for release on October 16th, 2024. The song originated from a jam session between guitarist JP Wasson and his son, Caden, and was further transformed by bassist Jared Wasson's live performances. "Testify!" stands out for its Southern preacher vibe, mixed with the driving force of punk, and topped off with the iconic line: "Brothers and sisters I need you to testify!"  The song evolved when bassist Jared introduced a fresh, vibrant bassline during live performances, diverging from the original recording. “Jared's live counter riff added a completely new dimension to the song,” JP explains. Inspired by this new energy, the band re-recorded the track to capture the heightened intensity. Guitarist Michael McKenzie contributed intricate riffs that mesh with Jared's bass, adding a groove reminiscent of the ‘60s "Day Tripper" vibe, while Carmen Toth's background vocals give the track a full, resonant quality. The Green Door highlights The Discarded's evolving sound, merging the grit of garage rock with the punch of punk and elements of classic rock. The album was produced by John Critchley, whose work with artists like Elliott BROOD and Dan Mangan adds a polished yet vibrant feel to the record. Michael McKenzie, a standout figure in the Canadian rock scene, was integral to shaping the album's sonic identity. From touring North America with Universal Honey and supporting acts like The Goo Goo Dolls, The Tragically Hip, and Alanis Morissette, to playing with The Lowest of The Low and The New Mendicants, McKenzie's versatile background shines through on The Green Door.  This album marks another bold step in The Discarded's evolution. Recorded at Green Door Studios, it embodies a powerful fusion of garage rock, old-school punk, metal, and '60s/'70s rock influences. With production and mixing by John Critchley, the ten original tracks on The Green Door deliver a high-energy experience that compels listeners to move. The album also features standout contributions from Michael McKenzie on guitar, Carmen Toth on background vocals, and Lee Rose of Ace of Wands, whose heavy metal violin adds a unique twist. The striking cover art by illustrator Rachael Muir complements the album's bold and eclectic sound      D I S C O V E R Website: https://www.thediscarded.ca/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thediscarded16Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/4Pya3sMf2HDP5Yw7ubZNkb?si=yErcmvaERSmJ5OuSr-iQagYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpuiBO0iPWRbFR6f3MvxBtg/videos This episode is brought to you byGo to BETTERHELP.com/apologue for confidential online counselling.use the code word Apologue for a 7 day free trial Pledge monthly with Patreon https://www.patreon.com/apologueShop Apologue products at http://apologue.ca/shop

Today on the podcast, I was very lucky to snag a few golden minutes from a jewel of a human who is always shining and glimmering in many different musical directions; Craig Smith. Craig is a Collingwood, Ontario songwriter in the great folk rock band called Ontarians but he is also a sound engineer, producer, multi instrumentalist, father, renaissance man and just an all around swell fella. He and I became fast pals when he was the entertainment coordinator of a magical spot in Collingwood called Crow Bar and Variety. He had me back quite a few times to take that lovely stage with my band, and a friendship sparked. He and his partner Ariana Dalie are the main lynchpins and curators for a brand new festival called Four Winds Music Festival (in Durham, Ontario on the lovely Riverstone Eco Retreat grounds) and it's all happening July 14-16. I am playing at the festival with my full five alarm band along with some amazing superstar and up and comer acts like Sarah Harmer, Danny Michel, Elliott Brood, Julian Taylor, Queen M, Mountain Head, Jolie Smith, Alysha Brilla and so many more. We had one heck of a lovely chat. It’s a busy week on the concert calendar, so there’s plenty for us to preview, including the return of Elliott BROOD, Brock Zeman, James Keelaghan. Also on the schedule, we chat with Rose Cousins who returns to the West End and we were planning to be visited in-studio by The Wilderness of Manitoba; sadly, we had to enact the Fred Eaglesmith Clause on that one, when their gear was locked up at a venue in Brandon so they didn’t make it in time for the end of the show. They did, however, record some songs after the show, which you can listen to at the UMFM Live Sessions page.

One of our favourite bands, Sunparlour Players, released a new record this week, and it’s a gem. That led us off into previewing some other great roots rockin’ bands who return to town soon. We’ve got a few classics and a birthday song to end off the show.

The 2011 Western Canadian Music Awards take place tonight, and the slate of nominees is especially strong, and especially stacked with Winnipeg artists, so what else are we to do but play a whole bunch of the nominees? We’ve also got a heaping helping of great new music, and a couple of show previews featuring Oh Susanna and Elliott BROOD.

Another unbelievably busy week for concerts in Winnipeg, kicked off by one of the biggest hits at this year's Winnipeg Folk Festival, Amelia Curran, who stopped by the studio to sing us a couple of songs from her great new album Hunter Hunter. The week continues with The Other Brothers, Alana Levandoski, Elliott BROOD, and the return of the great Jesse DeNatale, among others. Even with a busy week like that, we managed to fit in some great new music.

We started things off with one of my favourite features of the year, a look at what songs, albums, and artists were most played in the previous year. After that, it was in the other direction, as we pulled out some things we haven't heard in a while, for a feature called "Where Are They Now," where we listened to some folks who seemed bound for glory and then, for whatever reason, faded away. Whomever and wherever they are, we thank them for what they've given us and wish them well.

It's a good news/bad news kind of day. The good news is that there are some great upcoming shows featuring the likes of Elliott BROOD and C.R. Avery, as well as some great new stuff. Unfortunately the bad news is that lots of my new music comes from the closing out sale at Candor. When the bad news hit that they were going to be forced to close down for a while, it came as a shock, so I headed down to stock up on some things that I hadn't made a point of picking up yet, but knew I'd better while I still had the chance. They'll be back, bigger and better than ever, but in the meantime, thanks for the musical memories and best of luck!

It's Mom's day and we've got a lot to celebrate as always. For Jaine, Lucy, and all of the mothers out there, we just had to play a few songs in their honour. Hour two was full of songs dedicated to moms and some that mom should love. Hour 1 was devoted to nostalgia (with the announcement of an upcoming Mike Plume Band show!), and some fabulous new music from the likes of Langhorne Slim, Eliza Gilkyson, and Elliott BROOD!

A busy week for upcoming shows that's for sure, and we took the time to run down the list and convince you to go to each of them, including David Francey, Justin Rutledge, The Great Lake Swimmers, Nathan, Shuyler Jansen, Elliott BROOD and MORE!?! We're never too busy, however, to play some of the great new music that's fallen into my shopping cart as of late, so we ended off with some of the best that I've picked up lately, including the new Chuck Prophet, Josh Rouse, Bob Snider, and a gem of an older find from Bob Schneider.
