Episode #884 Today we start off with a tribute to friends old and new who have passed away over the past week in music history. I'm very late to the party in discovering Winnipeg's own Kipp Kocay, and I'm sad that I didn't seek him out before his untimely passing this week. We also fondly remember the music of John Bottomley, Jesse Winchester, and Merle Haggard. I ran out of time so didn't get to John Prine, but certainly love and miss him as well. Hour 2 is all new music culled from new releases over the past couple of weeks, and there are some gems! playlist: https://wp.me/p1lizT-enQ
Members of the Aces played in Fatback, a local band in Knoxville, Tennessee, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, consisting of vocalist and guitarist Russell Smith, bassist Jeff "Stick" Davis, drummer Butch McDade (born David Hugh McDade in Clarksdale, Missouri; February 24, 1946 – November 29, 1998),[1] and Fatback's first lead guitarist Mike Brooks and later Dan Kennedy. The band left Knoxville in the early 1970s.In 1972, the Aces came together in Memphis, Tennessee, at the recommendation of Barry "Byrd" Burton (born in Greene County, Tennessee; September 7, 1946 – March 10, 2008),[2] who was engineering and producing at the famous Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis. Davis and McDade, who had recorded and toured with singer-songwriter Jesse Winchester as "The Rhythm Aces",[3] recruited Smith, keyboardist Billy Earheart III, lead guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Burton and pianist James Hooker to develop a sound mixing of pop, country and blue-eyed soul.Stacked Deck, their debut album, released in 1975, resulted in two crossover (rock and country) hits, "Third Rate Romance" and "Amazing Grace (Used to Be Her Favorite Song)," the group's lone Top 10 country single. In 1976, "The End Is Not in Sight (The Cowboy Tune)," from the album Too Stuffed to Jump, won a Grammy for Country Vocal Performance by a Group. "Third Rate Romance" reached No. 1 on the Canadian pop/rock charts. These tracks were engineered by Burton, who produced their first three albums.Burton left the group after the release of Toucan Do It Too in 1977 and was replaced by Duncan Cameron. In 1978, the Aces released Burning the Ballroom Down, followed the next year by a self-titled album featuring songs with Joan Baez, Tracy Nelson and the Muscle Shoals Horns. Both albums received critical approval but sold poorly. They released another album, How the Hell Do You Spell Rhythum, before disbanding. The Aces re-formed in 1994. The group, composed of Smith, Davis, McDade, Earheart, Hooker and new guitarist-mandolinist Danny Parks, released Ride Again, an album of new renditions of their biggest hits.

The Sens are keen on goalie Matt Murray, according to TSN. We discuss who we might deal for Murray in our first visit to the Sens Nation Trade Lab. Is it a good idea? He's only under club control for one more year. A two time Cup winner on an offensive team. Murray didn't benefit from a 1990's New Jersey Devils shutdown style of play. Murray got it done. A 937 save percentage during the last Cup run. Jacques Martin joins the New York Rangers...Such a great pickup. Martin spent 17 years as a head coach for the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Florida and Montreal. 12 years as an assistant in Chicago, Quebec, Colorado and Pittsburgh. David Quinn the current head coach has been an NHL coach for 2 years. Does the game pass coaches by? Zdeno Chara wants to return to Boston Still no deal for Borowiecki. The Band's follow-up self-titled album "The Band" was a success and bigger than their first effort. You'd think they'd slow down and smell the roses, but they didn't. The Band never followed the same path as everyone else and continued to dive deep into recording. Often times as individuals rather than a group, each member spent serious time in 1969 and 1970 working on their friends projects including work for John Martyn, Todd Rundgren, Jesse Winchester and John Simon. However, with the success came the demands of a fanbase and a label. The Band spent time on the road in 1969 for the first time in an extended capacity. The success opened the door to a new life style, a place where everyone wanted to be your friend and every had a party. With touring also came press in a meaningful way. The Band broke ground being the first American band on TIME magazine. The Band also were re-introduced to the press with a very spicy interview given by Ronnie Hawkins and much, much more. The Band embraced this life style, but it would just be a matter of time before it all began to start breaking down. With a label expecting more albums, The Band would be back in the studio in 1970 creating their third album. Time will tell if it would all pay off for The Band.
