Blackie and the Rodeo Kings are one of the most interesting bands working anywhere today. Sometimes they're in a recording studio time warp with more songs to choose from than Gabriel. Followed by tours and festivals everywhere. Then they disappear The punch line to the tale is, the Blackie guys have their own lives, careers and fan bases. What's most remarkable is, after more than 25 years, they are still a band and friends.   For Example:   Stephen Fearing is releasing his next album on March 13 - The Empathist.  Wildly outstanding music. (We'll be talking again.) Stephen starts his Canadian tour at The Carleton Room in Halifax with two sold-out nights Feb 4-5. Kicks off album release March 13 at Mary Winspear in Sidney, Vancouver Island. Alberta dates March 21 Festival Place Sherwood Park, March 22 River Park Church Calgary.   Colin Linden Colin continues to produce artists at his Pinhead Recorders in Nashville. He's also been touring with T Bone Burnett. He co-wrote and co-produced T Bone's latest album The Other Side.  Next week Colin starts a new album, just in time to hit the road again. Colin begins his own tour - The Ride on Tour - on April 23, hitting Calgary on June 1 and Canmore on June 3. Tom and Terry   Tom Wilson I'll just give you the short version. Re-recording songs,  with son Thompson, from his play Beautiful Scars.  Writing and recording soundtrack music for a number of projects including a film by Tanya Tagaq. Between his flourishing artwork, writing a new book, and starting a new album, Tom also enjoys the glow of an Order of Canada induction.  That's the short version.   Blackie - The Band.   Plans are underway for dates in Canada. Winnipeg Folk Festival, Mariposa Folk Festival, Belmont Festival Edmonton (June 20) They are planning shows in Hamilton, Toronto where cameras will be filming. More events to come.

And she's not done yet!!! Heading to the Edmonton Folk Festival as well. Mariel brings tales of relationships, sadness, depression, and small-town loneliness that can squeeze the life out of you. Not exactly feel-good songs but there is hope throughout. And a fight-back spirit. The complete interview – a romp – can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the video version on terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel E talked about when she realized that words, music and voice could be the way out of her dark life and relationships. I wrote this album for losers and underdogs. I want every outsider and lost soul to feel seen and safe with these songs. I wrote it for anyone who's ready to make a change and especially for those who aren't.  Onward !!!!!!

There's really no such thing as an overnight success! Dreams can be experienced but it takes the work of time to find the crossroads between dreams and reality. The Bros. Landreth dreamt of making music, just like their Dad Wally in Winnipeg. Wally wanted that too because he kept spinning vinyl at home,  like a music teacher. But no schlock..only the good stuff. Little Feat, The Eagles, Neil Young, CS&Nash, and Bonnie Raitt. Years later the Brothers are playing at the Winnipeg Folk Festival when they were approached by the headliner – none other than Bonnie Raitt. She asked if they would send her songs to record because they reminded her of her friend Lowell George from Little Feat. David and Joey Landreth wrote and rejected many songs. They felt they weren't up to Bonnie's standards but eventually – again years later – they sent a song they had recorded Made up mind. Just so happens it's the same song Bonnie heard them play and she said – that's the song. Two years later the boys hear from friends in Nashville that Bonnie is recording that song and then she makes it the first single off of Just Like That. Both album and song go on to win Grammys this year and The Bros. Landreth has become “a thing”. Here's a discussion with David Landreth about those Grammy moments and the rest of the story.  Well done boys. Congrats Wally!! What a win for Bonnie and great music.

Fresh off a spring West Coast tour opening for Molly Burch, a couple cool UK festivals, and several very fun music video releases, genre-bending singer-songwriter JayWood is starting an exciting summer. It began with his first-ever appearance at the Winnipeg Folk Festival last weekend -- where he brought his mix of jazz, pop, folk, and funk music to huge hometown crowds -- and then kicks into high gear with the release of a new full-length album, Slingshot, on July 15. Paul Little caught up with JayWood on the final day of the Winnipeg Folk Fest to chat about his festival experience, his successful tour windows when many acts have had to cancel gigs worldwide, writing and recording the new record, and why he made sure it's a complete front-to-back package rather than just a collection of songs. If you're in Winnipeg, you can head to the Tallest Poppy on Thursday, July 14 at 8:00 PM for a Slingshot album listening party. Otherwise, be sure to keep your eyes peeled to JayWood's Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter for upcoming summer tour dates across North America and beyond -- including Manitoba festivals Real Love Summer Fest and Rainbow Trout Music Festival -- as well as a proper album release show sometime in the fall.

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Bernard Fitzgerald over Zoom video! Michael Bernard Fitzgerald is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has collected an audience of fans across North America drawn to simple honest words and a genuine smile. Having released 4 full-length albums to date, Fitzgerald has spent his career since 2006 creating music, touring, developing as a songwriter, and connecting with audiences. Fitzgerald’s unique and innovative ideas coupled with his inherent warmth allow him to engage with people in a way that always leaves them meaningfully connected. After over a decade of working with labels, creating songs with top-tier L.A. songwriters and producers including Jon Levine (Drake, Dua Lipa), Brian West (Maroon 5, K’naan), and Dennis Herring (Ra Ra Riot, Modest Mouse) on About You, and spending some time in the charts with “I Wanna Make it With You” (2016) and “One Love” (2016), Fitzgerald has finally found himself and a calm, rooted, unfeigned sound at home. A career of touring across Canada and around the world sharing the stage with artists like Bryan Adams, Ben Harper, Dan Mangan, Sam Roberts, Joel Plaskett, and Kings of Leon has brought Michael back to his hometown, Calgary Alberta, to create his newest record Love Valley. If it was in a small club or larger theatre like the Vogue in Vancouver, the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto, Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, or on the big stages at a festivals like Calgary Folk Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, Firefly Festival or Mountain Jam (to name a few) the spirit of honest connection with people has always existed in Fitzgerald’s performances.Today, he knows the value of time spent living in the moment and continues to go forward fostering the experience of connecting one song, one room, one fan at a time. We want to hear from you! Born in Chattanooga and now based in Johnson City, Amythyst Kiah’s commanding stage presence is matched by her raw and powerful vocals—a deeply moving, hypnotic sound that stirs echoes of a distant and restless past. Accompanied interchangeably with banjo, acoustic guitar, or a full band, her eclectic influences span decades, finding inspiration in old-time music, alternative rock, folk, country, and blues. Our Native Daughters, her recent collaboration with Rhiannon Giddens, Leyla McCalla, and Allison Russell (Birds of Chicago), has delivered a full-length album produced by Rhiannon Giddens and Dirk Powell, Songs of Our Native Daughters (out now on Smithsonian Folkways). NPR described the opening track, Black Myself, written by Amythyst, as “the simmering defiance of self-respect in the face of racism.” The supergroup will hit the road in July with a series of special dates that include performances at Washington D.C.’s Smithsonian Museum of African American History & Culture as well as the Newport Folk Festival. Most recently, the group has been nominated for Duo/Group of the Year at the 2019 Americana Honors & Awards. Amythyst regularly tours the United Kingdom and has performed at Celtic Connections, Southern Fried Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival, the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival, and SummerTyne Americana Festival. She is a crowd favorite at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion in the U.S. and has shined at the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts, Smithsonian Folk Life Festival, Winnipeg Folk Festival, and opening for artists such as the Indigo Girls, Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, Old Crow Medicine Show, First Aid Kit, Darrell Scott, and Tim O’Brien. Provocative and fierce, Amythyst’s ability to cross boundaries is groundbreaking and simply unforgettable.

Debashish Bhattacharya is an Indian classical musician, singer, composer and instrument pioneer. Debashish has redefined Indian classical music over the last 25 years by performing on slide guitar, and through introducing new techniques, sounds and instruments to the music. He has taught more than a thousand students, created a new genre (Hindustani Slide Guitar), and performed in more than two thousand concerts and workshops, with Grammy nominations and several world music awards. He invented his own slide-guitars, unique to his compositions, which he calls the "Trinity of Guitars". These hollow neck instruments are the 24-string chaturangui, the 14 string gandharvi and the anandi, a 4-string lap steel ukulele. I first met Debashish at the Winnipeg Folk Festival through our mutual friend Bob Brozman, and then had the chance to work with him in a collaboration at the Vancouver Folk Festival the next year. He is an incredibly accomplished musician, and also an excellent fellow and a sheer joy to hang out with! Enjoy my conversation with Debashish Bhattacharya.

Kaia Kater was born into the folk music scene. Her mother is a festival director and she learned to play clawhammer banjo at age 11 from Mitch Podolak (founder of the Winnipeg Folk Festival). Now, the Canadian native is studying the Appalachian folk traditions in West Virginia and connecting with the work of a range of artists - from old-time musician Dom Flemons to hitmaker Kendrick Lemar. A star in the making, Kaia stopped by the studios of Beehive Productions in Saranac Lake, New York to play a few songs from her debut release, 'Sorrow Bound.'

Folk Alley Sessions

(Session originally published in September, 2015) Born in Quebec of mixed Afro-Caribbean ancestry, Kaia Kater, resides in Toronto and spends extensive time in West Virginia, where she ardently studies balladry and traditional dance. As an original songwriter, she works to incorporate her perspective as one of the few people of color in roots music into the complex racial history of the traditions themselves.
