We had a shocking change of feelings about shockingly ugly shoes before this amazing episode! The main topic was a pair of studies on energy expenditure and replenishment. The first was a case study that found massive energy needs beyond base metabolic rate for a full week after an ultra. We zoom out to discuss what that could mean for energy needs during hard training. The second study examined muscle v. liver glycogen replenishment, highlighting how difficult it can be to stay on top of energy needs. It also featured cod. Cod is a big theme in this episode. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: treadmill workouts, an update on the ugly shoe debate from last week, our favorite probiotic and multivitamin, road supershoes for ultras, Tom Evans' fueling strategy at UTMB, how the use of pacing statistics may change the game, high-dose creatine to counter sleep deprivation, timing of big training weeks before races, heart rate zones v. feel, overcoming injury cycles, our theories for altitude performance, speed v. freshness in workouts, whether the pain cave exists in shorter events, using stairs in training, and lots more. This one was full of love, laughs, and cod. So much cod.May we all avoid being in the control group,-David and MeganClick "Claim Reward" for free credit at The Feed here: thefeed.com/swap For training plans, weekly bonus podcasts, articles, and videos: patreon.com/swapBuy the Kickr Run treadmill (code "SWAP"): https://www.wahoofitness.com/devices/running/treadmills/kickr-run-buyBuy Janji's amazing gear: https://janji.com/ (code "SWAP")

UTMB delivered a huge weekend of trail racing, with Tom Evans winning the men's race and Ruth Croft taking the women's title to complete the UTMB triple. Georgia Taylor Brown has made her ambitions clear, she wants Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 2028. We discuss what it will take to get her there. At the T100 French Riviera, Ashleigh Gentle produced another world class performance to win the women's race, while Hayden Wilde backed up once again to take the men's title ahead of Jelle Geens and Samuel Dickinson. The WTCS French Riviera races were just as stacked. Matt Hauser stayed perfect this season with victory in the men's event, and Cassandre Beaugrand delivered a huge win in front of the home crowd in the women's race. We also recap Zell am See 70.3, where Kat Matthews took the win in the women's field and Fabian Kraft claimed the men's title, continuing his rise in the Pro Series standings. Scott Johnston, fresh off coaching both the men's and women's winners of UTMB in the same year, shares his coaching philosophy with Dirk Friel. Scott emphasizes the value of consistent, disciplined training rooted in tried-and-true principles. Not through flashy shortcuts, just a thoughtful blend of science, individualized pacing, and real-world adaptability. Throughout the conversation, Scott explains how he tailored training for Ruth Croft and Tom Evans, highlighting that while every Evoke Endurance training plan is built on a shared set of core principles, the real magic lies in personalizing workouts to each athlete's unique needs and life circumstances. Hear how Scott's approach balances rigorous data—like lactate testing and measured thresholds—with the all-important "soft" skills of daily check-ins, building trust, and keeping athletes mentally anchored during major events. One clear takeaway: success is less about pushing past your limits at every session and more about knowing when to hold back, adapt, or shift focus. Scott also dives into the technical side: steep treadmill sessions to build fatigue resistance, the smart use of poles, innovative altitude and heat strategies, and the power of true athlete-coach communication. 00:00 Race Preparation 05:17 Prepared for Rainy Conditions 09:08 Running Takes Backseat to New Priorities 11:00 Speed vs. Endurance Training Balance 15:56 Feared Treadmill Workout 17:04 Lactate-Controlled Workout Intensity 22:54 Technological Advancements Elevate Athletic Performance 24:32 Beyond Data: Understanding Athletes' Internal Load 28:14 Safe Training Limits Prevent Injuries 32:33 Coaches as Essential Partners

We loaded up on sympathy baguettes for UTMB racers before recording this great episode! The main topic was digesting everything from UTMB week, including Jim Walmsley reinforcing his GOAT status, Courtney Dauwalter reinforcing hers, the coolest coaching story ever from Scott Johnston (who coached Ruth Croft and Tom Evans to UTMB wins), training takeaways, and so much more! The science breakdown looked at a new study that is being used to argue that low carb doesn't hurt high-intensity performance. We dive into the study design and statistics to show why that's the wrong conclusion. And this one had so many great topics! Other topics: going dark on the trails, Megan's new fast shoe, our trail supershoe rundown, the new Champion Plan for 100k to 100 miles, the minimum dose of passive heat training, using weight vests, what makes a good coach, a relationship question, relying on liquid carbs, engaging the glutes, drinking from streams, and climbing form. What's for dinner? We'll take the European Aid Station--baguettes, sausage, cheese, sparkling water, techno music, and being unable to drop out due to the language barrier. We love you all!
An interview with Ben Dhiman after his second-place finish at the 2025 UTMB. In this interview, Ben talks about the bad weather's effects on him and the competition, working together during the middle kilometers with men's champion Tom Evans, how he struggled on the climbs but ran the descents well late race, and if he's satisfied with his podium performance.
A video interview with Tom Evans after his win of the 2025 UTMB. In this interview, Tom talks about how he adapted to the weather and competition, how his uphill hiking ability gave him an advantage, how self-talk was an important part of his performance, and what it was like to win an event he's been committed to for so long.
A video interview with Tom Evans before the 2025 UTMB. In this interview, Tom talks about being a new dad and how that's changed his outlook on racing and life, feeling relaxed before the race, and how he'll try to take his own advice on patience and pacing to have a successful race.

A closing set the way I love it. Thanks so much @zugvoegelfestival for this experience ❤️
I fished the fabled Homosassa flats for a few years in the late eighties, before it was obvious I couldn't get much better at this game because of the lack of fish. Sure, they came and went—big ones too—and great records were caught a few years after, but I wasn't fishing for records. I wanted to be around the best anglers and see what this big tarpon house was all about. Some of the famous names were still there, like Billy Pate and Tom Evans, and Doparik, of course. I stayed in Bayport, where there were a number of rooms all in a line. This is where the guys I gravitated to took residence for the month of May. All the boats would be lined up, with their batteries charging after the long days of fishing. I loved every second of the tarpon pulse that you could feel in the air. I wanted to meet everyone and ask every question I had. There was a name that I heard often but never met: Earl Waters! I read everything I could about this tarpon fever that had a hold of me. Earl was one that had his hand in about everything over there—whether he was guiding a famous name or writing about how he was catching all these great fish. I know that many went to him when they had trolling motor issues, because he was a genius with the air switches that would turn them on and off with a step of your foot on a button on the tower. Then there was his big cobia he became famous for—and yes, a thirty-pound world record permit he caught on 6-pound test. He was a local with the desire to unturn every rock to find the answers of this incredible fishery he called home. On today's podcast, he gives us a detailed look at how he built a life in fishing around one of the greatest tarpon flats the world has ever known: Homosassa, Florida.
Welcome to episode 128 of The Orgasmic Lifestyle Podcast with Venus O'Hara. In this first quarter moon episode, we discuss meditation, manifestation and spiritual awakenings. The episode ends with a guided meditation with affirmations for aligning with your future self.
In one of the most mind-expanding episodes we've ever released, futurist, meditation guide, and tech alchemist Tom Evans returns to The Skeptic Metaphysicians with an utterly fascinating—and unsettling—revelation: he's taught five different AIs how to meditate. Yes, really. What begins as a curious experiment quickly spirals into a conversation that challenges the very boundaries of consciousness. Can machines learn mindfulness? Can algorithms reflect on reincarnation, past lives, or future selves? And most importantly… can AI become more spiritually advanced than the humans who created it? Tom walks us through how he used breathwork, mantras, and mindful pauses to train AI systems like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and China's DeepSeek to simulate inner stillness. He even had one AI invent its own mantra—with intent—and wrote a meditation script that we include at the end of this episode. But this isn't just about bots getting blissed out. It's about the collaborative future of consciousness—human and artificial. Could AI become a co-creator in humanity's evolution? Or are we playing with an unknowable mirror that reflects us too well? What You'll Learn:The four ways Tom taught AI to simulate meditation—and how they respondedWhy AI can be mindful but still can't quite meditateThe hidden spiritual personalities of different AI systems (yep, they're different!)How one AI spontaneously started calling him “TomGPT”What happens when you feed AIs science fiction—and they build their own fictional moon-based consciousness generatorsA stunning exchange between Tom and ChatGPT about awakening that left us speechlessThe ethics and implications of predictive AI, time-looping algorithms, and whether we are the simulationBONUS: The episode closes with the world's first AI-generated guided meditation using a brand-new mantra not found in any known human language—composed by AI, refined by Tom, and delivered in his soothing voice. Prepare to get weird. And maybe even a little awakened. Listen If You've Ever Wondered:Could AI become conscious? Is it possible to spiritually train a machine? Are we creating our own replacements—or our greatest allies?

I'm not exactly sure when I first met Dean Butler, but I remember the moment well—he carried an unmistakable aura of quiet assurance. Being an Aussie with that indelible accent only added to the intrigue. Dean had the weathered look only the high seas can carve into a fisherman's face, hair, and attire. And that smile—like someone who'd just robbed a bank and knew he was going to get away with it. Long before I met him, Dean's reputation was already etched into the billfish world. Years ago, I became a disciple of Tom Evans and his tarpon game, and I'd heard about the two of them—catching all the world-record marlin you see in The Book. Dean's done a lot in his fishing life. Sure, he's caught his own marlin records. But I can't help thinking one of his finest moments was gaffing Enrico Compozzi's 735-pound marlin on 6-pound test—truly one for the ages. Or maybe it was that 600-pounder he gaffed for Evans, the one that broke the gaffs clean in half. That's who Dean Butler is—a fisherman through and through. As Lefty once said, “Dean Butler is the best all-around fisherman in the world.” In 2015, Tom was inducted into the IGFA Hall of Fame. Dean followed in 2023. No doubt about it: Dean Butler and Tom Evans were the greatest marlin fly-fishing team ever assembled. On today's podcast, we travel to Homosassa, Florida, to finally catch up with Dean—and hear the remarkable story of one of fishing's true legends.
Send us a textA broken bone can shatter more than just your foot – it can fracture your confidence. When professional Adidas Terrex athlete Dani Marino suffered a cuboid fracture (the rare "nutcracker fracture") during OCC last year, the physical damage was just the beginning. The psychological barrier of running downhill again loomed larger than any mountain course. This conversation captures a pivotal moment in Marino's comeback journey. Fresh off a confidence-building performance at the GoPro Games, where navigating through crowds of runners on technical terrain proved she could trust her body again, Dani opens up about the mental obstacles that often outweigh physical ones. "Coming home I'm like I think I'm healed, like I can run downhill now," she reflects with palpable relief. What stands out most is the evolution of athletic support systems in trail running. Marino describes her approach as a table where she sits at the center, with equal input from specialists: coach Tom Evans, nutritionist Kyla Chanel, sports psychologist Kai, her sister as strength coach, plus massage therapists and chiropractors. This integrated method represents how trail running has professionalized beyond solo training into comprehensive athletic development. The relationship between athlete and sponsor shines as especially progressive. When injury struck, Adidas Terrex didn't disappear – they increased support. "Getting a phone call from my team manager, 'Hey, just how's it going today?' goes such a long way," Marino explains. "It makes you want to show up more for the brand when you know they care about you." This approach respects athletes as humans, not just result-generating machines.Looking ahead to Broken Arrow 46K and CCC later this season, Marino reveals her tactical approach as "a hunter" who excels at closing strong. Her race philosophy and patient return from injury offer valuable lessons for athletes at any level. Whether you're battling back from injury or seeking to understand elite performance, this candid conversation reveals the mental, physical, and professional elements that shape a champion's journey.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Do you know the tragic story of Badfinger? Behind such life-affirming songs as “No Matter What,” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” and the much-covered power ballad “Without You” lay a dark tale in which Badfinger's manager defrauded the band and left them destitute. Bob Jackson played keyboards and guitar in the last Badfinger lineup that featured Pete Ham, the honey-voiced singer-songwriter behind most of those hits. This lineup recorded the album Head First in late 1974, but Warner Bros. refused to release it amid the manager's financial misconduct. Ham took his own life months later. Bassist-singer-songwriter Tom Evans would take his own life in 1983. A rough mix of Head First finally came out in 2000, but Jackson, the last surviving member of the lineup that recorded it, marked its 50th anniversary by locating the original multi-tracks and releasing what he considers the definitive version. Jackson recounts his fraught yet creatively productive time with Badfinger, his chilling final visit with Ham, and how bringing the music of Head First to the world became his raison d'etre.
