A singer-songwriter and former frontman of The Ugly Americans and The Scabs, Bob Schneider is one of the most-celebrated musicians in Austin. Combining diverse styles, Schneider's music spans genres, blending elements of folk, rock, rap, funk, bluegrass, reggae and country with the more traditional singer/songwriter aesthetic. Schneider has won more than 59 Austin Music Awards including: Best Album, Best Songwriter, Best Musician, and Best Male Vocals making him the most decorated artist in Austin's music history. He started gaining national recognition with his major-label debut Lonelyland. A fiercely-independent artist, Schneider opted to start his own label, Shockorama Records, which has afforded him the freedom to make the music his fans love, on his own terms. Schneider's live performances, both solo and with the band, are legendary. He has two appearances on the Austin City Limits television show and is also in the 20th year of his residency at The Saxon Pub. Bob is also an accomplished visual artist who transforms found visual media into thought-provoking works of art that challenge the viewer's perceptions of contemporary and popular culture. He juxtaposes iconic figures from comic books and other mass media and places them in everyday situations, leaving the viewer to interpret the meaning of the artwork. By appropriating old and valuable books, often intended for mass consumer consumption, Schneider creates something unique and personal for each viewer.

John Lindstrom and Bob Schneider discuss a topic that has been popping up increasingly among Michigan lawmakers lately: transparency and reforming the use of budget earmarks … especially “11th hour” earmarks. Lindstrom, a former reporter, editor, and publisher of Gongwer News Service, and Schneider, senior research associate for state affairs at the Citizens Research Council recall the history of end-of-session budget earmarks. “This is nothing new,” said Lindstrom. “I mean, you go back to when I first started covering the legislature when dinosaurs still roamed the earth. The last session day before Christmas, it was well understood that there was a bill called grants and transfers, which was known in the legislature as the “Christmas tree bill.”' While ham is often associated with traditional Christmas dinners, Christmas tree bills/11th-hour earmarks are always associated with pork. Eighteen months ago, Schneider reviewed and wrote that over 65 percent of over $1.3 billion in earmarks in the FY2024 “omnibus” budget bill were “eleventh-hour earmarks” that appeared only in the final bill – not in the Executive Budget or in the House- or Senate-passed budget bills. $1.3 billion in unseen, non-public, non-transparent spending of state taxpayer dollars. He wrote at the time that the legislature should move to improve “front-end” transparency and vetting by providing upfront details on sponsored earmarks and respecting legislative rules that should prohibit these eleventh-hour earmarks. Since then, it has become noticeably clear that the best way to prevent these earmarks is through restrictions in statute. “The downside to earmarks is that they, you know, they're sort of politically motivated rather than most often policy or policy motivated,” Schneider says. “The best place for these earmarked protocols would be to put them in state statute so that they are part of permanent law. “We know the legislature -- both parties and both chambers with Republicans in charge, with Democrats in charge -- have ignored their own rulemaking at times and the courts don't really have any way to deal with that.”

* Except for last week, when visiting missionary Bob Schneider delivered the teaching, we've spent the majority of June considering Luke's perspective regarding Jesus's call of His primary messengers and the communication of His primary message. A primary message that was designed to help people to change the way they approached life, by teaching them what having a Messianic mindset was all about. For to be a true follower of Jesus requires us to increasingly adjust and adapt our thinking to match His, so that we can more effectively serve as His ambassadors in this world. * Pastor Bob summarized this Messianic mindset as one that is kingdom-focused and others-focused, rather than worldly-focused and self-focused. * So, 2 weeks ago, in verses 21-35, Jesus gave four contrasts in the form of blessings and woes to illustrate the outcomes of those two mindsets, and then seven commands that challenge us to respond to those that mistreat us in ways that cannot help but get their attention. * And my personal key take-away was this… "People destined for hell do not know what they are doing, or where they are heading. But we do". And one of the best ways we can help them, is for us to embrace and exhibit a Messianic mindset, especially when we are treated poorly or unfairly. * So this morning, after a quick recap of the seven commands, we'll wrap up Jesus's Messianic mindset teaching by considering five reflections of it, and then three illustrations that teach us how to effectively make it more of a reality in each of our lives.

State budget officials met on May 17, 2024, to finalize state revenue estimates that will be used as guideposts for ongoing FY2025 budget deliberations. The Research Council's Bob Schneider and Craig Thiel provide insights into what the new estimates mean as lawmakers wrap up the budget as well as the budget outlook for Fiscal Year 2026. Scheider said the conference experts delivered a positive outlook, stating that the forecast for the national and state economy was generally good: real GDP, the key metric to monitor the health of the national economy, is expected to continue to grow through the next few years at a normal, healthy rate. Inflation is falling back, though not quite as fast in Michigan as it is nationally; incomes are growing, and Michigan's unemployment rate remains low. The revenue conference, held in January and May each year, brings together the State Treasurer, the Michigan Legislature's top budget advisors and economists who present information on the state and national economy, workforce, wages, the auto industry, and spending patterns by businesses and the public in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The May Revenue Estimating Conference is a key step for state lawmakers in finalizing the state budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins October 1. Economists and state officials determined that revenue estimates in May showed a slight increase for the state's General Fund and a slight decrease for the School Aid Fund from January estimates. Schneider says the most important takeaway is that revenues continue to grow. Revenues for the state General Fund is expected to grow about 1.5 percent, or just over $200 million. School Aid Fund revenues were adjusted down to about $160 million, or about 1 percent, from January, and that largely reflects slightly slower sales tax growth. "During COVID, people shifted their spending patterns towards goods and 'stuff.' People were buying stuff rather than services. So now, maybe we're seeing a sort of return to normal on that front, which is slowing sales tax growth."

Patrick is joined by award winning singer-songwriter Bob Schneider to discuss UFOs, Aliens, Music and Ai. "Before turning to a solo career, Bob Schneider spent years performing in various bands, often as the loud and energetic front-man. He dropped out of the University of Texas at El Paso, where he studied art while also performing in his first major band, a local funk-rock outfit called Joe Rockhead. The band independently released three albums before disbanding. Schneider subsequently performed with the Ugly Americans, sometimes as an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band, and signed with the revived Capricorn Records. In 1997, Schneider co-founded The Scabs, a funk ensemble that regularly played local Austin venues, and was described as "inspired by The Rugburns (right down to the suits and ties) [with] bawdy show tunes and puerile blues". Schneider briefly dated actress Sandra Bullock between the years 1999 and 2001. While the relationship did not last, his songs have continued to appear in films from throughout the actress's career." - WIKIPEDIA

Hey everyone! The One Drink Book Club is usually a benefit for paid members, but I decided to open this one episode up to everyone because it was so fun and covered so much cool ground. The One-Drink Book Club is an informal, (almost) weekly series in which fellow author Emma Lee Jayne joins me and our other creative friends to talk about the life, business, and art of writing and making books … for the duration of one Friday-afternoon drink. Today, Emma drank a gin and tonic with a splash of cranberry, Mike (new to the ODBC, standing in for Bill) poured himself a vodka tonic without a twist, and I had a glass of Freakshow Zinfandel. Here's what we talked about in this episode: * Mike prompted Emma and I with a question: Do writers get creative when they want to decompress like non-writers?* I got a bunch of newly-printed hardback books in the mail and showed off the details that make them special and the excitement that makes me want to do more and more.* My further plans for “making beautiful books” going forward.* Emma's new “Writing and Taylor Swift” podcast is coming soon, following a hostel-chaos and illness incident. * My plans to form stronger bonds with my cherished readers … * … which rolled into me gushing about my True Fandom of Bob Schneider and his new audio waveform art …* … which led to a really cool discussion of our philosophies on what fans want most, and how we can best give them. * We ended by acknowledging the excellent noises of Mike's dog Freddy, who sounds like Chewbacca. If you liked this episode of the ODBC, you should absolutely become a member of this substack. You'll get new ODBC episodes [almost] every week in addition to the other subscriber benefits and will also be endorsing the arts like a champ and supporting the folks who make the things you enjoy, like me. Today (okay, “recently”), I saw musician Bob Schneider perform with his father and young daughter onstage. It was pretty cool to see how he brought his family into his concert. The creative lesson I took from this Noticing is that the personal and the professional don't always have to be compartmentalized. Introducing elements of familial relations or personal history into our work can add layers of authenticity and richness.WANT MORE?Members get extra episodes of the podcast, extra companion blog posts (see below), and more every week … all for the price of a fancy coffee. In Platemark s3e45, host Ann Shafer talks with Bob Schneider, who is best known for his music but is a serious artist as well. You may know some of his best-loved songs like 40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet), Honeypot, Deep Blue Sea, and Peaches, but you will be delighted to learn about his print output. These are gorgeous etchings primarily made with Katherine Brimberry at Flatbed Press in Bob's hometown, Austin, TX. In the episode, Bob and Ann talk about all sorts of things including anxiety, AI, and creativity. Their discussion about creativity is fascinating: he's a surrealist at heart and subscribes to the idea that images emerge unbidden from his subconscious. In fact, he believes he is just cultivating things that are already there. Numerous etchings by the artist are online at flatbedpress.com. As you look through them online, you can guess which one is in Ann's collection. His digital compositions, collages, and paintings are available at Yard Dog Gallery. Bob plays a lot of live shows in Texas, including weekly Monday nights sets at Saxon Pub in Austin. He plays select shows in other places; check his website for tour dates near you. He's a consummate performer and is worth seeking out. Rhett and Bob discuss the realization that success doesn't necessarily change your life, why names are important, and agree that calculation can kill creativity. Bob Schneider is one of the most celebrated musicians in Austin, Texas. Combining elements of funk, country, rock, and folk with a more traditional singer-songwriter aesthetic, Schneider's talent defies genres, and his powerful lyrics tackle tough subjects like alienation, drug addiction, and lost romance. Schneider has won more than 58 Austin Music Awards, including awards for Album of the Year, Musician of the Year, Best Songwriter, and Best Male Vocals, making him the most decorated artist in Austin music history. bobschneider.comBob on IG @bob_schneider_musicRhettmiller.comRhett on IG @rhettmillerWheels Off is brought to you by Osiris Media. He studied art in college, while performing in his first band, a funk-rock outfit called Joe Rockhead. The band independently released three albums before disbanding. Schneider subsequently performed with Ugly Americans who were an opening act for the Dave Matthews Band and signed with the revived Capricorn Records.[8] In 1997, Schneider co-founded The Scabs, a funk ensemble that regularly played in around Austin and described as " inspired by The Rugburns (right down to the suits and ties) [with] bawdy show tunes and puerile blues in the beginning, but eventually the powerhouse funk took over when the Grooveline Horns were added".Career In 1999, Schneider formed a solo act, initially under the name Lonelyland, which became the title of his record released through Universal Records. His style has been described as "acoustic based songs with electronic beats and noises in the background and other types of cross genre music. His live shows are known for improvisation [and] audience involvement".[He went on to record the major-label solo albums Lonelyland (2001) and I'm Good Now (2004), which garnered him significantly more national attention and some critical acclaim. "Big Blue Sea" from the Lonelyland album received significant radio play, as did "Come With Me Tonight" from I'm Good Now. "Metal & Steel" from Lonelyland is, to date, Schneider's most played song. The contracts that he signed with Universal in 2001 and Vanguard in 2004 allowed him to release albums as "side projects" on his own Shockorama Records.Among the albums that have been self-released are Galaxy Kings and I've Seen The End of the World and It Looks Like This. All of these side projects were re-released by Vanguard in conjunction with the release of his 2006 album The Californian. Previously, these albums had limited availability as approximately 10,000 copies were produced. After releasing The Californian, Schneider also put out Greatest Hits Live, recorded in Austin on July 17, 2006, on Shockorama Records. He has a long-standing Monday night residency at the Saxon Pub and regularly plays at Antone's, both venues in Austin. His live-band includes Harmoni Kelley (bass), Jeff Plankenhorn (guitars), Conrad Choucroun (drums), Danny Levin (cello) and Oliver Steck (accordion) In 2009, Schneider signed with Kirtland Records and released Lovely Creatures in September 2009. It featured the single "40 Dogs (Like Romeo and Juliet)", which peaked at #14 on the AAA Radio Chart. The album also featured Patty Griffin on the track "Changing Your Mind".He released a second album on the label entitled "A Perfect Day" on April 19, 2011, featuring the single "Let The Light In." "Burden of Proof" was released on June 11, 2013.His next musical project, King Kong, was released in 2015 under the Shockorama label and was the result of a crowdsourcing campaign through PledgeMusic. King Kong saw its release over the course of 2015 in the form of three EPs (volumes collectively known as The King Kong Suite) as well as a full-length album made available to his online backers. In 2017, Schneider began making his massive backlog of recorded demos available to his fans through Patreon. His next album Blood and Bones was released on June 8, 2018.On an episode of The Lone Star Plate podcast, Schneider said he turned down a part in the 2020 Netflix hit The Lost Husband because he didn't want to become an on-screen celebrity.
