On this episode, I talked with my good friends, Lindi Ortega and Mike Meadows, about a project that we actually worked on together. I've known Mike for a while and have worked with him a lot over the years. Late last year Mike introduced me to his friend Lindi and shortly afterwards we three cooked up a plan to record some Tom Waits songs and release them as a joint single. Lindi and Mike are both amazing artists and musicians and it was an honor to get to work with them both. So please join us as we dive into some of the funny stories and interesting details about this project and how it was made. I hope you enjoy it and as always email me at jack@jackbarksdale.com for any questions or show ideas.

I think that Edmonton-based singer/songwriter Joe Nolan is one of those true “old soul” songwriters. He's been writing songs that are deeper and wiser than his years for over a decade. He first came to my attention when Six Shooter Records put out the album Tornado in 2014 and set him off on the road to promote it. His name was unknown to me, but the label was well known, and the list of people who helped make that record was impressive. It was produced by the great Colin Linden, who was the guest on episode 3 of this show. He brought in his usual stellar backing musicians, and special guests Lindi Ortega and Tom Wilson, so the album got a quick listen. I loved it from the start. As good as that album is, Joe has demonstrated some of the most remarkable growth that I've ever seen in a young songwriter and performer. He's truly dedicated to improving and learning as much as possible and will settle for nothing but the best that he can write and put out. I think that one of the reasons that I'm also so drawn to Joe as a person is that we have similar personalities in a lot of ways. He struggles with darkness and doubt and despair but finds a lot of joy and strength in music and especially live performance. Joe is truly one of the hardest working musicians that I know. Normally, he'd have toured all over the place and done hundreds of shows over the past year, but Covid had other plans. He's made the best of his time though, and just announced a new album called Scrapper, and I really hope that you'll pre-order that and purchase some of his other albums by visiting him on Bandcamp at joenolan1.bandcamp.com You can learn more about him at joenolanmusic.com Joe had a lot more to say about the album, but I thought this episode was probably long enough already, so I've got more of my chat with Joe coming up on the May 23 edition of my other show, Tell the Band to Go Home, which you can find most places where you find this show, or at tellthebandtogohome.com

Lindi Ortega is a Toronto girl who fled to Nashville to pursue her dream. She doesn't want to be a mainstream country star, because she'd lose creative control, so she flirts with the boundaries of classic country and indie music. This had led her down an interesting path, opening for Southern California punk legends Social Distortion and even doing a Ramones cover with Tim Armstrong from Rancid. I caught up with the singer songwriter who is known for her signature red boots. Although Austin may have laid claim to the title of the "live music capitol of the world," there really is only one town where musicians with a hardcore jones for country music make their pilgrimage. Native Canadian Lindi Ortega had already made a name for herself up north, releasing a pair of EPs and a record that racked up a pair of Juno award nominations when she arrived in Nashville. But once in Guitar Town she hit the red ground running, enlisting fellow Canadian journeyman musician Colin Linden to produce her newest record, "Cigarettes and Truckstops." The result is a set of ten songs that play like Dolly Parton on steroids. There are nods to the female forebears of torch and twang - Emmylou, Loretta, Tammy and Patsy (all the demigoddesses that should be on Music City's Mount Rushmore) but Ortega is also a writer of substance who is not afraid to singlehandedly attempt to pull country music into the 21st century by questioning the authority of Nashville's politically incorrect establishment. Her songs pull no punches, but they are dressed up in enough sequins that the good ol' boys may be too entranced by her voice and charming stage presence to know they're being rendered archaic. And you simply must hear her smoldering take on The Man in Black's "Ring of Fire." If Ortega is the future of country music, we can't wait to see where we're going.

We like to mix things up on this show, and today we did both, with a bunch of very happy news and music, and some sad & bitter songs. Perfect. The first part of the show was a celebration of new music, new discoveries, concert news, and even a birthday tribute to a fine Canadian songwriter (now politician), Andrew Cash. Later in the show, we delved into the joys of sad, bitter, and miserable breakup songs! Why not?
