Words and interview by: Kyra JadeComing up very soon in May, Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be joining long time buddies Bowling For Soup on their Bowl Your Bones Australian Tour. Frank Turner graciously jumped on to chat with HEAVY MAG before making the long journey to our shores!Luckily this isn't Frank's first time visiting us, he's played some great shows and festivals in Australia over the years. We spoke about playing the iconic Byron Bay Bluesfest in particular taking a moment to reminisce on what it was like and being a part of the artist community. According to Frank the news about Bluesfest collapsing, AKA another tombstone added to Australia's 'festival graveyard', has been shared and felt all around the world. It's nice to hear that our little Byron Bay festival had such a positive impact on international visitors and I hope one day we can fill those shoes again with a new music haven. This particular interview was so much fun to research. When looking up what Frank Turner has been up to, I was hit with some crazy stats. Things like casually travelling to 50 states in 50 days in the US, 15 cities played in 24-hours and 24 shows in 24-hours in London. Along with having his own annual festival Lost Evenings that's a force in itself and massive accomplishment, he's also checked off playing Wembley and Alexandra Palace to an enormous amount of adoring fans. What I was most impressed about was finding out that Frank actively donates his time and fundraise for charities close to his heart like protecting grass root venues, mental and community health support and taking on a massive project to restore housing in Sierra Leone after being destroyed by floods. Yeah I know, I'm wondering what the fuck I've been doing with my life too. Remind me never to play two truths and a lie with this guy! All jokes aside, Frank is an amazing person. It's very rare to see people put their money where their mouth is and I have huge respect for the work he's done. There's plenty of Easter Eggs in the full interview, you'll just have to watch it yourself to find them. Yes, I left my stuttering ass in there because although I'm an embarrassment to myself; I'm only human. I get nervous and sometimes can't get my words out but it's important to be real in a world where people only want you to see them through their ‘curated lens of perfection.' Luckily this time I had Frank Turner sitting there with a kind smile on his face while casually rocking his bath robe. Dress for the job you want, right?! Genius. I took a leaf out of his book, if he's giving off the ‘zero fucks' chill vibe, then I am too.Humans aren't perfect and we should all be a little kinder to ourselves.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.
Interview by Kris PetersAustralia, get set to be bowled over in 2026, with beloved UK folk punk act FRANK TURNER & THE SLEEPING SOULS joining forces with Texan pop punk mainstays BOWLING FOR SOUP for a monumental co-headline Australian tour next month. When a band can make it feel like a summer party anywhere they go, you know you're in for a good time. And with over three decades in their wake as a band, BOWLING FOR SOUP, aka the self-proclaimed "9th greatest pop punk band in history", have left an indelible mark on their genre and pop culture in general, roaring out of Texas in 1994 and never looking back. Eleven studio albums, including two Silver and Gold certified LPs? Yes. Appearances on multiple high-profile soundtracks, including a Disney Channel theme song staple? You bet. Endless amounts of humour, high-octane performances and earworm hits that you'll still know the lyrics to decades after their release? Suffice to say, BOWLING FOR SOUP are here for a good time and a long time, and are definitely not slowing down anytime soon.Recently celebrating the 20th anniversary of their iconic 2004 album A Hangover You Don't Deserve, which also included their biggest UK tour to date, BOWLING FOR SOUP are set to continue their path to world domination. And in 2026, BOWLING FOR SOUP will continue to jubilantly fly the flag for pop punk, including a return to Australian stages this May after their acclaimed appearances at 2024's Good Things Festival and headline sideshows.HEAVY caught up with frontman Jaret Reddick to talk more."After we got back from Good Things I was thinking, why aren't we coming here more?" Jaret began. "So we were talking to Destroy All Lines and trying to think of a good band that we can tour with and we had just watched Frank Carter And The Sleeping Souls and I said why don't we just come over here with Frank Turner? A lot of things have to align for that to happen. Bands are always talking to each other saying hey we should tour together, or we should do this but you've gotta have agents and managers and schedules and so many things come together for it to actually happen so we were really, really lucky that it went down this way. It's gonna be a really fun, early Summer for us."The tour is being billed as a co-headlining event, prompting us to ask if that means both bands will be alternating the late slot each night or more just both playing headline length sets."I'm not really sure how it's worked out yet," Jaret replied. "I know this. I've seen his band and he's seen mine so we both know that the others band is pretty good (laughs), so there is a bit of pressure for both of us to get out there and put on the best show we can. I'm a huge Frank fan, so whether he plays before or after us, I will be side of stage watching every night. And I'm sure he will be doing the same thing."In the full interview Jaret talks more about what we can expect from the shows, what has changed with Bowling For Soup since their last visit and how this run of shows will be different. We also go back to the early days of Bowling For Soup, talking about the musical climate that gave birth to the band and where they fit in. We speak about the first time he heard one of his songs on radio and where he was at the time, how the band has changed over the 30 plus years they have been together, new music and plenty more.Tickets from www.destroyalllines.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Your weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works – and this week they speak to Ricky Bates, head of booking and promotion at the Joiners in Southampton - one of the UK's great grassroots venues. But first they chat about:Half a million pounds is being distributed in the UK to grassroots venues artists and events - and it's money gathered from the levy on ticket sales in the UK. Steve and Stu discuss how this money is being spent – and how it will make a difference.Last week, Steve spoke to highly successful UK manager Niamh Byrne (Blur, Gorillaz and more) and you'll be able to hear that interview in a couple of weeks. But one notable thing she spoke about was how managers are working harder than ever, and need to provide more services than before. So what is a manager's job now? Also at the Music Ally Connect conference, a key Universal music exec spoke about how AI can create new songs when one song is “covered” by AI versions of other artists: “I really want to hear what it sounds like for Jimi Hendrix to play Bitches Brew”. But do people really want to hear AI-generated cover versions? Then the duo speak to Ricky Bates and he discusses the reality of running a local grassroots venue in 2026 – and it's a solid-gold local venue that has hosted most of today's biggest bands on their way up. It's where both Coldplay and Manic Street Preachers signed their first deals, and how Green Day "accidentally" played their Kerplunk! album launch show at the Joiners. The public podcast contains highlights of the interview – however Patreon Superfan listeners can hear the whole interview as this week's lock-in content! (Become a Patreon Superfan here! https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusic)Ricky speaks about:How he started at the venue by being thrown in at the deep end – and how he cleared a huge rent debt (with help from some Frank Turner gigs)How a “reset button” has been hit in the last few years – and how people's gig-going habits have changed recentlyWhat the hidden costs are of running a venue – and why the profit margins are so tightThe stressful process of buying the venue with the help of the Music Venue TrustHow artists are starting to book shorter “big city” tours that avoid the regional towns and cities, leaving local fans with fewer options. How under-18s fans are often drawn to the huge arena shows at the expense of cheap local shows. The future of the venue and what decades of moshing has done to the floor of the dancefloor!===================================As ever, we welcome your feedback, emails and – in particular – any questions you might have about how the music biz works!Email us: thepriceofmusicpodcast@gmail.comSee you next week!Steve and Stuart======TPOM online: http://tpom.uk/Support The Price of Music on Patreon:https://www.patreon.com/ThePriceofMusicFollow Steve on X - @steve_lamacqFollow Stuart on X - @stuartdredgeFollow The Price of Music on X - @PriceofMusicpodFor sponsorship opportunities, please email - joe@musically.com
Episode 355 features my longtime friend, bandmate, and fellow artist LJR (Luke Justin Roberts). He's been on the show a number of times now, and it was fun to catch up in his home studio to talk about our new collaboration song “Show People” by Frank Turner, which comes out Thursday this week. We also have a show this weekend on Friday, January 23, in Baltimore at Dicks Halfway Inn with Will Sims, Old Eastern, Peace by Peace, and A Band of Misfits. We talked about the recording process for both the audio and video of the song, as well as a lot of other mutual projects we have going on. We also dove into what it means to be an artist in 2026 and everything related to that. Luke, of course, also runs his Amplify video series for artists all over the DMV, and you can check him out at @ljrcreative for more info on that. Feel free to follow any of us on the socials and come out to the show this weekend if you're in Baltimore. Thanks for listening and supporting local musicians. Please follow, rate, or review the podcast wherever you are streaming if you'd like to help us out. -- Part-Time Rockstar Productions is available in the DMV for music videos and live filming.

It was a great time talking with Jake about his transition from Political Science to music, how he puts a song together, and he had a really good take on when a song is truly finished. He also told us about how doing improv comedy lends itselfto songwriting, and of course, his new album “Idling High” available everywhere! Jake Cassman's music echoes the raw energy of indie rock, the artful melodicism of power pop, and the thoughtful and vulnerable songwriting of the best Americana. And since he began releasing music in 2013, Cassman has embarked on a musical odyssey that has taken him to intimate venues and major stages around the country, drawing in audiences with electric, eclectic performances, and songs that make the intimate seem epic and the political feel personal. This year will see the release of his debut LP, Idling High -- a staggeringly ambitious and disarmingly honest record that showcases Cassman's wry humor, acute observations, and deep compassion. Jake began playing piano at age five, and started writing music soon after. He loved Elton John from an early age -- but when his teacher couldn't show him how to play Green Day songs, he began teaching himself; and when he realized he wanted music to be his career, he left an Ivy League school to pursue it. Since then he has worked as a dueling piano player, musicaltheater composer, improv and sketch comedian, and podcast producer (just to name a few gigs). He is also a published academic and a school music educator, while still finding time to play pickup basketball most weekends and try new beers based on the silliness of their names. Cassman has contributed performances and songs to various political and social justice causes, and his inventive, award-winning music videos bring the stories and ideas from his songs to life in unforgettable ways. His previous project, Drunken Logic, contributed the song and video"What A Beautiful Morning!" to the 2016 anti-Trump compilation 30 Days, 30 Songs alongside R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, and more. Now using his own name, Cassman is poised to join acts like Counting Crows, Frank Turner, Sam Fender, and Lucy Dacus whose music is at once introspective and anthemic, and whose singing and writing voice is both timely and timeless. Featuring Avery Johnson (soloist), Safiya Simpson (soprano), Aviana Gedler (soprano and viola), Hannah Goodwin (alto), Kasey J. Domer (tenor), and Tommy Boynton (guitar). Be More Kind Music and lyrics by Frank Turner History's been leaning on me lately. I can feel the future breathing down my neck. And all the things I thought were true When I was young, and you were too Turned out to be broken, And I don't know what comes next. In a world that has decided That it's going to lose its mind – Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind They've started raising walls around the world now Like hackles raised upon a cornered cat. On the borders, in our heads, Between things that can and can't be said, We've stopped talking to each other And there's something wrong with that. So before you go out searching Don't decide what you will find – Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind. You should know you're not alone. And trouble comes, and trouble goes. How this ends, no one knows. So hold on tight when the wind blows. The wind blew both of us to sand and sea, And where the dry land stands is hard to say. As the current drags us by the shore, We can no longer say for sure Who's drowning, or if they can be saved. And when you're out there floundering Like a lighthouse we will shine – Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind. Like a beacon reaching out To you and yours from me and mine – Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind In a world that has decided That it's going to lose its mind – Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind Follow Holy Shed on Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/theholyshed/ Support Holy Shed on Ko-fi; https://ko-fi.com/holyshed follow Dave on https://facebook.com/dave.tomlinson.925/ follow Dave on https://instagram.com/bad_christian/Go

On this week's show, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run, spend quality time with new records from Superchunk and Charley Crockett and spin fresh tracks from Ivy, The Last Dinner Party and Margo Price. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is a podcast that thinks it's a radio show...because it used to be one. The show started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004. It phoenixed into a podcast in 2020, thanks to the fine and fabulously furious folks at NRM Streamcast.

What do a punk rock lyric and the teachings of Jesus have in common? More than you might think. In this episode, inspired by Frank Turner's raw line from “1933”: “Be suspicious of simple answers, that shit's for fascists (and maybe teenagers)”. We dive headfirst into the beauty and challenge of the messy middle. From the “greatest commandment” conversation in the Gospels to the wisdom of mystics like Teresa of Ávila, Thomas Merton, and Richard Rohr, this is an invitation to live in the tension, embrace complexity, and resist the lure of easy answers. If you've ever felt like life, faith, and God are anything but simple, you're in good company. If this episode meant something to you, I'd love it if you'd take a second to like, subscribe, and leave a review, it really helps more people find the show. Episode 324 features Luke Justin Roberts, aka LJR—a longtime friend of mine and a talented pop artist based in the DMV. While he was a frequent guest in the early days of the show, it's been at least 100 episodes since his last appearance, so it felt like the perfect time to bring him back. We were working on a collaboration for a Frank Turner cover, which gave us the chance to fit in an interview. Luke is releasing a full-length album tomorrow, June 11th, which has been years in the making. In this episode, I featured his track “Insecure,” which you can stream on all major platforms. We had an in-depth conversation about balancing the need to make money with the drive to stay creative as a musician. In addition to his music, Luke runs LJR Creative, offering video services, and hosts songwriter sessions called “Amplify” at studios throughout the DMV. Thanks, as always, for listening and supporting local artists—may you kick ass in all your endeavors. Please follow, rate, or review the podcast wherever you are streaming if you'd like to help us out. -- Part-Time Rockstar Productions is available in the DMV for music videos and live filming. In a world so focused on productivity, Coach's Journey founder and host Robbie Swale is interrogating what this word really means. His work on the concept of meaningful productivity explores up questions like: “What do I need to do in order to be at peace with myself?” And: “Do I want to be more productive or simply not feel like I'm failing all the time?”In this episode of The Coach's Journey Podcast, Robbie joins Joey Owen for a conversation that gets to the very heart of Robbie's work as a leadership and careers coach with over 2000 hours' experience, and as an author whose decade-long writing practice has led to valuable contributions to the field, such as The 12-Minute Method and The Coaching Business Flywheel. Robbie and Joey tackle fundamentally important questions about how coaches can make a difference in a world ravaged by conflict and division, how to stay humble in our work, and how to ensure we feel at peace with ourselves. You will hear Robbie and Joey speak about the importance of living and working with a code of honour, about learning to trust the strange and unexpected things that arise in coaching sessions, and how to integrate spiritual practices into your life through the rituals, hobbies, passions and habits you already do.If you would like to be doing more of what really matters to you, feeling better about the work you are doing, and living a rich life regardless of your financial situation, this episode is for you.Robbie and Joey also talk about:- How to cultivate a practice of trust that conversations happen at the right time- Not lying to ourselves about what we “have” to doThe places in our lives where we can practise presence and connection- How to manage your focus, attention and attitude in order to actively work towards the goals that matter most to you- The power of telling a story twice to embed an idea in your memoryThey also explore practical ways to keep yourself in the energy possibility, and Robbie shares the story of how “crashing and burning” while running a coaching event taught him powerful lessons about group dynamics, scapegoating and the importance of contracting.THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT THAT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN:- Episode 45 of The Coach's Journey Podcast, with Raquel Ark https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/podcast/episode-45-doing-the-right-thing-even-when-its-hard-raquel-ark-interviews-robbie- Rich Litvin https://richlitvin.com/- The 12-Minute Method https://www.robbieswale.com/the12minutemethod- Workshop with Robbie and Claire Pedrick https://www.3dcoaching.com/artful-coach-soulful-business/- Robbie's article about leading with honour (A Man Got to Have a Code) https://www.robbieswale.com/writing/2024/10/11/a-man-got-to-have-a-code-leading-with-honour-iii- The Meaningful Productivity Blueprint https://www.robbieswale.com/meaningful-productivity-blueprint-download-page- Gay Hendricks, Zone of Genius https://www.robbieswale.com/the-12-minute-blog/2022/2/3/the-zone-of-genius-the-most-powerful-thought-experiment-for-personal-transformation- Robert Holden, questions about purpose https://www.robertholden.com/blog/9-questions-help-find-purpose/- A Warren Buffet story about how he helped the pilot of his private jet prioritise more https://passionateaboutoss.com/the-story-of-mike-flint- Seth Godin on setting fees https://seths.blog/2024/11/understanding-pricing/- Parkinson's law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinson%27s_law- Douglas Hoffstatter's law https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstadter%27s_law- Ramit Sethi's podcast https://www.iwillteachyoutoberich.com/podcast/- Ffelyn Uchaf https://www.felinwales.org/- Jim Dethmer and Joel Monk on Coaching from Sourcehttps://www.coachesrising.com/podcast/jim-dethmer-coaching-from-source/- Frank Turner, The Way I Tend to Be https://frank-turner.com/tracks/the-way-i-tend-to-be/- Frank Turner, The Gathering https://frank-turner.com/tracks/the-gathering/- Frank Turner, Journey of the Magi https://frank-turner.com/tracks/journey-of-the-magi/- Internal Family Systems (IFS) drama triangle https://www.stroudtherapy.com/news/2024/02/25/dramatriangleifs- David Gemmell https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gemmell- The Wheel of Time novel series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wheel_of_Time- The ‘Yes, And' teambuilding exercise https://openpracticelibrary.com/practice/yes-and/https://www.radicalagreement.com/post/yes-and-and-improv-teamwork- David Deida https://deida.info/- Freedom to Learn https://freedomtolearn.org.uk/- An Introduction to The Coach's Journey Flywheel https://www.thecoachsjourney.com/the-coaching-business-flywheel

New Year, New Mini. Well, a day late. Doing our second wave of minis, and working more fan requests (still such a weird thing to hear), we regale you on the story of when we met. It's really not that fascinating. Just know that Frank Turner is amazing and that Angela Bassett herself made this happen.
On this week's show, we wrap up the merry month of Debts-cember (and the year in general) with the most honorable of mentions, the runners-up that fill our cup, the best of the rest of 2024 All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories.
Wayne Sleep, Ben Miller, Rosalind Eleazar and Lou Conran join Stuart Maconie for this week's Loose Ends, with music from The Lottery Winners.Dance icon Wayne Sleep waltzes in to tell us stories of his life - all detailed in his new autobiography, Just Different. Tales of his friendships with Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury, David Hockney and fellow ballet legend Rudolph Nureyev intermingle with insights into his working-class upbringing and the difficulties of trying to make it as the shortest principal dancer ever to get into the Royal Ballet. Told he would always have to spin twice as fast and jump twice as high to succeed, Stuart hears all about the trials, tribulations and backstage gossip that make up Wayne's world. With notable appearances in Slow Horses, Howards End, Rellik and the Personal History Of David Copperfield, as well as striding such prestigious stages as the Royal Court and the National Theatre, Rosalind Eleazar is set to return to the small screen this New Year. Starring in the Netflix production of Harlan Coben's Missing You, filmed across the north west of England, she's here to tell us all about her new role as Detective Kat Donovan. Award-winning comedian and writer Lou Conran has been storming stages up and down the country since 2005 with her innate brand of sharp wit and honest and open humour. 2025 will see her twenty year anniversary as a performer and off the back of a sold out UK tour, she's about to embark on a tour of New Zealand, and joins Stuart to tell us about the year ahead. The actor and comedian Ben Miller is of course known for The Armstrong & Miller Show, the Johnny English and Paddington films, Death in Paradise, Bridgerton - but over recent years has turned his hand to writing children's books. From his Elf series to the recent The Night I Met Father Christmas, he joins Stuart to talk about his new character – Robin Hood…aged 10¾. And we'll hear all about his new TV series Austin which will be on our screens in 2025. Robbie Williams, Noel Gallagher, Boy George, Shaun Ryder and Frank Turner are just some of the huge names The Lottery Winners have in their phonebook. Formed in the mining town of Leigh 15 years ago, The Lottery Winners set out to work the UK gig circuit and perfect their now acclaimed stagecraft. And it all paid off when their last album went to No.1 in the UK. Their fourth original album KOKO is due out in February with a tour closely following…and another one with Robbie Williams following that! They join Loose Ends to play two songs - Superpower and Worry. Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Elizabeth Foster Production Co-ordinator: Lydia Depledge-Miller

Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and nothing but love for Taylor Swift, Haitian migrants, and geese. Is your calendar the secret to fostering deeper friendships? The NYTimes (and Andrew) think so! It seems simple enough - a standing coffee date, joining a sports league or a book club. But why do so many of us struggle to make these commitments? We discuss some ways to make planning an event with a large group easier, like using a scheduling app for availability, instagram polls in DMs, or just making plans and inviting anyone who wants to come rather than trying to cater to a bunch of scheduling needs. If so many of us are lonely, why do we struggle so much to make friend dates happen? Laura has a Bumble BFF update for us, and a reminder that we should all be conscious of not wasting others' time! Apparently for certain Gen Z'ers, 9/11 has become a popular internet meme. WHY? People have been processing traumatic events with dark humor since the beginning of time, but why are these memes crossing a line? We chat about how weird it is that people just a few years younger than us don't remember 9/11 - and it's probably why it's easier for some to be desensitized to it. Do the annual memorials and replaying of the same footage over and over play a part in desensitizing us to the horrors of that day? Read. the. room. We've got some solid recommendations for y'all this week: Frank Turner's latest album 'Undefeated' (Laura), SpotHero (Pam), and Zero app (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Time to judge each other on our morning routines (or lack thereof). Andrew is not prioritizing enough time for HIMSELF in the mornings! Pam has the most durable, instagram-worthy morning routine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
