Debts No Honest Man Can Pay is over 2 rock-solid hours of musical eclectica & other noodle stories. Wayne Sleep, Ben Miller, Rosalind Eleazar and Lou Conran join Stuart Maconie for this week's Loose Ends, with music from The Lottery Winners.Dance icon Wayne Sleep waltzes in to tell us stories of his life - all detailed in his new autobiography, Just Different. Tales of his friendships with Princess Diana, Freddie Mercury, David Hockney and fellow ballet legend Rudolph Nureyev intermingle with insights into his working-class upbringing and the difficulties of trying to make it as the shortest principal dancer ever to get into the Royal Ballet. Told he would always have to spin twice as fast and jump twice as high to succeed, Stuart hears all about the trials, tribulations and backstage gossip that make up Wayne's world. With notable appearances in Slow Horses, Howards End, Rellik and the Personal History Of David Copperfield, as well as striding such prestigious stages as the Royal Court and the National Theatre, Rosalind Eleazar is set to return to the small screen this New Year. Starring in the Netflix production of Harlan Coben's Missing You, filmed across the north west of England, she's here to tell us all about her new role as Detective Kat Donovan. Award-winning comedian and writer Lou Conran has been storming stages up and down the country since 2005 with her innate brand of sharp wit and honest and open humour. 2025 will see her twenty year anniversary as a performer and off the back of a sold out UK tour, she's about to embark on a tour of New Zealand, and joins Stuart to tell us about the year ahead. The actor and comedian Ben Miller is of course known for The Armstrong & Miller Show, the Johnny English and Paddington films, Death in Paradise, Bridgerton - but over recent years has turned his hand to writing children's books. From his Elf series to the recent The Night I Met Father Christmas, he joins Stuart to talk about his new character – Robin Hood…aged 10¾. And we'll hear all about his new TV series Austin which will be on our screens in 2025. Robbie Williams, Noel Gallagher, Boy George, Shaun Ryder and Frank Turner are just some of the huge names The Lottery Winners have in their phonebook. Formed in the mining town of Leigh 15 years ago, The Lottery Winners set out to work the UK gig circuit and perfect their now acclaimed stagecraft. And it all paid off when their last album went to No.1 in the UK. Their fourth original album KOKO is due out in February with a tour closely following…and another one with Robbie Williams following that! They join Loose Ends to play two songs - Superpower and Worry. Presenter: Stuart Maconie Producer: Elizabeth Foster Production Co-ordinator: Lydia Depledge-Miller

In many ways, Frank is the perfect name for this well-loved singer-songwriter, producer, and eternal punk rock firebrand. Kind of like the many tattoos that adorn his arms, Frank Turner wears his heart right on his sleeve. Always unstintingly honest in all his artistic endeavours, Frank's music carries a candour and conviction that's incredibly powerful – devastating, even. Frank always manages always to have the ability to connect directly with the human heart – whether sharing tenderly of his own life's journey through his songs, or pushing back with snarling ferocity against fascism and injustice, his music resounds with urgency, authenticity, and humanity. No matter if you're talking about the all-out sonic assault of his fearsome band, Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls, or – equally powerfully – when Frank is in the intimate solo acoustic mode that we experience on this episode. As we'll hear during this Hidden Track Session, Frank Turner is an astoundingly intelligent and acute observer of the human condition, a seemingly tireless road dog, a devoted music nerd of the very highest order, and a truly humble soul. He carved out some time between shows to join us in CKUA Live Performance Space in Edmonton, as he passed through on a relentless world tour celebrating his triumphant 2024 release, Undefeated. The record arrives on the heels of his 2022 album FTHC (for Frank Turner Hardcore) which – 15 years into his solo discography – saw this folk-punk troubadour shoot all the way up to Number One on the British Album Chart! For context, other artists to score UK Number One albums that year were people like Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift. But rather than try to repeat that formula for success, Frank decided to take the opportunity to instead to make this new album without a major label; and for the first time in his ten albums to date, to produce it entirely himself, in his own home studio. And as Frank tells us, the songs on Undefeated are mostly derived from stories drawn from his own life journey. In conversation, Frank is a fount of wonderful stories, insights, jokes, and esoteric music trivia – while as a songwriter and performer, he distills all of his brilliance down to a razor-sharp point. Along with a characteristically brilliant conversation with Frank, we're treated to an absolutely exquisite, heartfelt performance of three songs from Frank's new album, solo acoustic in CKUA studios: "Letters", "Girl from the Record Shop", and one of his most beautiful compositions to date, "Somewhere in Between". Host: Grant Stovel | Producer: Scott Zielsdorf | Recording/Mastering: Brendan Cross | Music: Doug Hoyer
Welcome to #Millennial, the home of pretend adulting and nothing but love for Taylor Swift, Haitian migrants, and geese. Is your calendar the secret to fostering deeper friendships? The NYTimes (and Andrew) think so! It seems simple enough - a standing coffee date, joining a sports league or a book club. But why do so many of us struggle to make these commitments? We discuss some ways to make planning an event with a large group easier, like using a scheduling app for availability, instagram polls in DMs, or just making plans and inviting anyone who wants to come rather than trying to cater to a bunch of scheduling needs. If so many of us are lonely, why do we struggle so much to make friend dates happen? Laura has a Bumble BFF update for us, and a reminder that we should all be conscious of not wasting others' time! Apparently for certain Gen Z'ers, 9/11 has become a popular internet meme. WHY? People have been processing traumatic events with dark humor since the beginning of time, but why are these memes crossing a line? We chat about how weird it is that people just a few years younger than us don't remember 9/11 - and it's probably why it's easier for some to be desensitized to it. Do the annual memorials and replaying of the same footage over and over play a part in desensitizing us to the horrors of that day? Read. the. room. We've got some solid recommendations for y'all this week: Frank Turner's latest album 'Undefeated' (Laura), SpotHero (Pam), and Zero app (Andrew). And in this week's installment of After Dark: Time to judge each other on our morning routines (or lack thereof). Andrew is not prioritizing enough time for HIMSELF in the mornings! Pam has the most durable, instagram-worthy morning routine. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two singer-songwriters who both come from the tradition of socially conscious folk-punk. One of them you could credit with inventing the genre, the other may be its most popular current proponent: Billy Bragg and Frank Turner. Billy Bragg is a legendary British performer who came up just after the punk boom of the late 1970s and channeled that energy into the style of a solo troubadour. His early records were massively influential to all sorts of musicians, which is no surprise given their wit, their lyrical pointedness, and how beautifully they capture the spirit of youthful engagement. But that was 40 years ago, and Bragg has created an incredible body of work that's always expanding but never losing that kernel of truth. It got really easy to catch up with the whole thing recently, as he released a massive 14-CD box set called The Roaring Forty, which you'll hear a little bit about in this chat. Bragg also has some US dates lined up for this July. Check out a classic Bragg track right here, one that today's other guest references in this chat. This is “Tank Park Salute.” Frank Turner mentions that song as well as some other Bragg classics in this chat, because he's clearly a big fan. Turner has been doing it for two decades now, and he's an absolute road warrior: Next week will mark his 3000th gig, a big number recently aided by a world record he set in which he played 15 shows in different cities in the span of 24 hours. True to his ethic, this wasn't a publicity stunt, but also a way to support one of the many causes he believes in—in this case the Music Venue Trust. Those shows came hot on the heels of Turner's tenth album, Undefeated, in which he reckons a bit with getting older but remaining true to himself and the things he believes in. That feeling is perfectly encapsulated in the relatively chill “Ceasefire,” check it out. In this great chat, Bragg and Turner talk about everything from Bragg's first US tour to their moments of musical awakening. Turner hilariously talks about his inner 15 year old giving him shit for being successful, as well as an old punk mentor who came to see him at Wembley. They talk about how activism and understanding change over the years, and how one of Bragg's biggest songs, “Sexuality,” has morphed in this age of trans visibility. And they talk about how music—especially live music—as a chance for communion, which is something I imagine most Talkhouse listeners can relate to. Enjoy. 0:00 - Intro 3:00 - Start of the chat 4:58 - Where to look while you're on stage performing 8:04 - Who's the most famous person in Frank Turner's phone? 16:11 - How to sustain yourself in the music industry 18:50 - Turner's upcoming 3000th gig 24:24 - Frank's 15-year-old inner punk judges his current chart success 29:45 - Staying true to your 25 year old self 44:58 - People choose the wrong Frank and Billy songs for their weddings Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Frank Turner and Billy Bragg for chatting. As we have done all throughout 2024, this month’s new release show is once again a two-part extravaganza. This thrills me, as that obviously means it’s a super great year so far, and I hope this is the case each and every month. This episode’s personal highlight is the first half hour or so of the broadcast, as it features “friends of the show” – artists that routinely send me their latest tunes. I cannot be happier than to share their music with all of you, and if you enjoy them as much as I do please head to their bandcamp pages and purchase them! There’s also some wonderful new power pop from The Reflectors, Kate Clover, and The Lemon Twigs (among others). There are veteran acts such as The Members, Woodentops, and surviving members of The Fall. There’s new “power folk” from Frank Turner. And, of course, a ton of great high energy rock and roll. For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

BORROWED SPARKS is the solo endeavor of Nashville's Mike Bay. A seasoned guitarist with a broad range of session and performance experience, the singer/songwriter's Americana rock sound first coalesced in his 2020 release, The Prettiest One Left.Acclaimed by Underground Music Collective as a “prime cut of rock and roll,” The Prettiest One Left is a testament to Bay's foundations. The deep-rooted influence of artists like the Eagles and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is palpable, and heightened by resonating elements of folk and punk rock. Later that year, Borrowed Sparks reached emotive new heights with a deluxe version of the record, which featured acoustic reimaginings of three previous tracks. This exploration of the album culminated in 2021 with the release of Borrowed Sparks' first live performance series, The Smoakstack Sessions. The revisitation included recordings of three songs from the original tracklist as well as a cover of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' “Refugee.”Now, Borrowed Sparks' next iteration is here. Vehemently faithful to Bay's established stylistic inclinations, his next album, Let a Little Light In, is less a progression than a transcendence into his post-pandemic state of mind—and a must-listen for fans of The Gaslight Anthem, Bruce Springsteen, and Frank Turner alike. Hello and welcome to How Did I Get Here? From The Vault! Today we go back to episode 430 with legendary British singer-songwriter, Frank Turner! This episode was originally released on October 30, 2014. Below are my original notes from the show. Enjoy! My guest for episode 430 is the amazing singer/songwriter, Frank Turner! Frank was in Austin on tour this week in support of his new album, Positive Songs for Negative People. He's been on tour of the U.S. for over a month with plans to return a lot in the new year. Anyway, I met up with Frank backstage at Emo's in Austin, TX before his instore at Waterloo and his show later that night at emo's. Frank and I had a fantastic conversation about record stores, the punk ethos, touring the u.s. and much, much more. I had the pleasure of getting to see his solo instore at Waterloo and full-band emo's show with his band, the sleeping souls. Both shows were amazing and intense. If he comes to a town near you, go see him! I hope you enjoy getting to know Frank as much as I did. Let's get down! Find millions of songs and thousands of podcasts, AND audiobooks on Spotify.
