Now, “Lion Lion,” originally released on his 2018 EP Lion, is roaring back into focus thanks to an unexpected new chapter. Elkas recently stepped into the acting world, appearing as Ed—the local record store owner—in the 2026 Netflix original series Finding Her Edge. If you ever needed proof that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is less a museum and more a cultural argument with a gift shop, Episode 13 of On The Record opens by doing what the institution does best: stretching the phrase “rock and roll” until it politely accommodates everyone from Wu‑Tang Clan to Shakira, with a quick stop at INXS (or, as Michael once heard on the BBC, the new Australian sensation “Inks”). Brian runs through the 2026 nominee list like a gig guide for the afterlife—The Black Crowes, Jeff Buckley, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Phil Collins (solo, because apparently we're double-dipping now), Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, Pink, Luther Vandross—and lands on the question that always makes the Hall quietly hilarious: who is this for, exactly? Michael's baffled by the ceremony mechanics (do nominees really “turn up hoping”?), while Brian reassures him it's not quite the Oscars, before casually dropping the detail that there's a public vote. Nothing says rock's rebellious spirit like “exercise our democratic right” via a link. The more interesting subtext, though, is what induction inevitably drags in: absence. Several nominees have key members who've died—Buckley, Michael Hutchence, Ian Curtis—prompting the kind of morbid logistics only a Hall of Fame can inspire. Michael wonders aloud whether New Order could be coaxed into a once-only appearance, and if so, would Peter Hook be anywhere near the bass, given the long-running fallout. Rock history, as ever, is part music, part family law. From there, the episode pivots into “telly as coping mechanism” territory.  Michael has started season two of Hijack, acknowledging (with Idris Elba's own executive-producer embarrassment) the inherent silliness of re-hijacking a man who has already been hijacked.  Brian, meanwhile, goes looking for light relief in bleak news cycles and discovers Resident Alien—a show he'd dismissed as fluff until it turns out to be fluff with enough teeth to feel like therapy. The alien-in-a-small-town premise becomes an excuse for a few sharp jokes about humanity's trajectory. But the main event is the week's shared homework: Paul McCartney: Man on the Run, the new documentary spanning the years between the Beatles' breakup and Lennon's murder.  Brian begins with dread—opening on “Silly Love Songs” is hardly a confidence-builder—but both hosts admit the film wins them over. They praise the craft: strong editing, collage-like imagery, and an effective “no talking heads (but their voices)” approach. Then they do the responsible thing and ask the awkward question: how honest can a documentary be when McCartney's own company financed it? Their answer is satisfyingly unresolved. Michael argues it's “warts-and-all enough” to avoid feeling like a total snow job—especially when the film lets other musicians (Nick Lowe, Chrissie Hynde) politely wonder what on earth Paul was thinking during the early, patchy years.  Brian agrees McCartney produced plenty of throwaway material, though he'll still go in to bat for Band on the Run and even dares to defend “Coming Up” (which Michael treats as a personal affront).  They both wish the doco lingered longer on the Lagos chapter, one of the few moments in the Wings story that feels like true risk rather than post-Beatles reputation management. The emotional spine, however, is Scotland. The documentary's portrayal of McCartney retreating to a remote farm with Linda is read here not as quaint pastoral cosplay, but as a survival strategy—grief, disorientation, and the sudden absence of the band-as-family.  The hosts talk candidly about parental loss, the Beatles as McCartney's “emotional prop,” and Lennon as the creative foil who kept Paul's “twee” instincts on a leash.  Linda comes out of it as both partner and lightning rod: necessary to him, mercilessly judged by everyone else.  Along the way, Brian remembers seeing Wings at the Myer Music Bowl in 1975 (yes, he was there), and the hosts revive Norman Gunston as the patron saint of awkward interviews—plus Michael's conspiracy theory that McCartney's infamous Japan marijuana bust may have been a deliberate exit strategy from a tour that Wings' hearts weren't in.  It's ridiculous. It's also, perversely, the kind of narrative logic rock biographies thrive on. By the end, the Hall of Fame is still a “broad church,” McCartney is still a genius with a questionable edit button, and Scotland remains the unlikely setting for both reinvention and retreat.  The biggest twist is that for two men who can't even land a sponsor, they spend 30 minutes proving the oldest rock cliché true: the past is never really over—someone's just nominated it. Send a textMartin Belmont was about 11 or 12 years old, a kid growing up in England, when he asked his parents to buy him a guitar. The first record he got was “Jailhouse Rock” by Elvis Presley. Around that time, The Shadows, out of London, were a popular instrumental group. America had The Ventures, England had The Shadows. Young Martin was fascinated by the look and sound of Hank Marvin's Fender Stratocaster. In art school, Martin made friends with other guitarists and musicians and after leaving school, he moved to London. Through a mutual friend, he met the members of two bands, Help Yourself and Brinsley Schwarz. The Brinsleys were in need of a roadie. Martin played that role for about a year before forming his own band, Ducks Deluxe. They signed with RCA, the label Martin's childhood hero Elvis had been on. The next band he co-formed along with guitarist Brinsley Schwarz and keyboardist Bob Andrews was The Rumour, best known for backing Graham Parker with Andrew Bodnar on bass and Steve Goulding on drums. The 46th annual meeting of the Wisconsin FFA Alumni brought historic high marks for membership. Pam Jahnke discusses the accomplishments and what's ahead with Tari Costello, executive director of the group. The guitar player who helped define pub rock in the 1970s is still making records. Brinsley Schwarz’s latest album, Shouting at the Moon, asks the same question that runs through much of his recent work: why can’t we get it together before it’s too late? The podcast then moves back to when his eponymous band became accidental pioneers of a movement they never quite intended to lead. There’s the infamous 1970 trip to New York’s Fillmore East that went spectacularly wrong, the moment Van Morrison left him “completely dumbstruck”, and the five years that followed when the band decided to simply get good. Between stories about Dave Edmunds’ backhanded compliments and 45-minute versions of ‘Niki Hoeky’, Schwarz reveals a musician who found his sound early and never saw much reason to abandon it. He remembers Bob Andrews with genuine affection and admits he didn’t write much during the Brinsleys because Nick Lowe was better at it. Eddie Angel joins me on the show today. Eddie is a guitarist, producer, and one of the founding members of the legendary instrumental surf-rock band Los Straitjackets.Eddie grew up in Southern California, steeped in classic rock 'n' roll, surf music, and vintage guitar tones, and he's spent decades helping keep that spirit alive while pushing it into new territory. Eddie was a well respected guitarist in the California rockabilly scene, and moved to Nashville to work with the Planet Rockers in the 80's. Sometime in there, her formed a new band that became Los Straitjackets, and put out their first record in 1995. They also donned some luchador masks and have basically never taken them off since. They've gone on to record 14 studio albums, and 8 live albums. Their newest album is called “Somos” and is up there with their best work as a band. What started as an instrumental surf outfit quickly became something much bigger, blending rockabilly, garage, country, and cinematic guitar music into a sound that's unmistakably their own.Another interesting facet to Eddie's career is as a collaborator, most notably working with Nick Lowe. The partnership between Lowe and Los Straitjackets has also gone on for years and is something they both continue to explore when the opportunities arise. Send us a textJohn McFee formed San Francisco-based band Clover in the '60s. Their first, self-titled album on Fantasy came out in 1970. Several years later, they came to realize some key people in the UK pub rock scene were big fans of their music. Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz and also drummer Pete Thomas, who called Clover to see if they would audition for the up and coming Declan MacManus, who would soon change his name to Elvis Costello. Clover got the gig, backing Elvis on My Aim is True and John McFee's great guitar work is what you hear on all the classic tracks like “Alison” and “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes”. John also played steel guitar on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic's Preview. The long list of artists he's contributed guitar, pedal steel and vocals for includes Carlene Carter, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, The Grateful Dead, and Boz Scaggs. In '79, John McFee was asked to join The Doobie Brothers, replacing Jeff Baxter. He also formed Southern Pacific with Keith Knudsen of the Doobies and Stu Cook of Creedence. In the '90s that trio became Jackdawg. The release of their fantastic self-titled album was delayed due to the death of their manager. A CD release was temporarily available in 2009, but the album was out-of-print for years. That is, until now. Baxie talks to Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John McFee of the Doobie Bros! Despite being the Doobie's lead guitar player for the last 46 years, John McFee's amazing career has taken him from playing with Van Morrison, Steve Miller, Nick Lowe, Rick James, and many others. He was also in the band Clover which not only backed up Elvis Costello on his first album—the band would eventually become Huey Lewis & The News. In 1990 John started a project with Keith Knudsen from the Doobie Bros and Stu Cook from CCR. Together they recorded an album under the name Jackdawg. Unfortunately, that was shelved before it got released following the death of their manager. The record would go unreleased for 18 years. "Hangover Terrace" The Ontario-born Ron Sexsmith is one of the great musical treasures on this weird and troubled planet. And we need him now more than ever. Over the course of his decorated career, the three-time Juno award-winning singer/songwriter has put out close to twenty winning albums and here's a quick note about that--his discography is perfect with not even a trace of a dip of quality. In fact, every album seems to top the last one, which is saying a lot because every album is absolutely brilliant. If this sounds like hyperbole, it's not. From his self-titled album to Cobblestone Runway to Retriever to Blue Boy to Carousel One to his brand new record Hangover Terrace, which is one of the greatest album titles ever, by the way, Ron Sexsmith always delivers the goods. It's hard to think of a musician who sings with such elegant precision and poetic finesse. Like Sinatra or Costello, his phrasing is unique and distinct--all it takes is a syllable of a song and you know instantly know it's him. He's toured with John Hiatt, Squeeze, Coldplay and Nick Lowe and his songs have been covered by folks like Rod Stewart, Nick Lowe, Emmy Lou Harris, Feist, Michael Buble, and Stevie Nicks. His 2017 novel Deer Life, A Fairy Tale is just wonderful and this year he made his theatrical composer debut with the internationally renowned Stratford Festival production of ‘As You Like It' in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. But back to Hangover Terrace. A moving and deeply stirring 14-track song cycle, Hangover Terrace is filled with dark whimsy, wistful ballads and mid-tempo magic. Sexsmith's fluid and free flowing voice is untouched by time, his delivery as free flowing and and as a result this is an album of emotional exactitude and pure indie soul.
