Alright, I get it....Me returning from a vacation in Italy is hardly the source for a 'theme' on the Coast Highway Shuffle Show. THAT SAID {;>}, this episode is exactly that, so I've added one song that followed me into every gelateria I went into: "Merry Christmas Everyone", by Raffaella Carra. Other than that, this episode is simply another 2 hours of AWESOME music featuring artists like Squeeze, Bonnie Raitt, Translator, Woodlock, Common Sense, Sam Cooke, Kacey Musgraves, Goldford, Nick Lowe and MANY others. Ciao, bella!!!

Rockpile?  The band?  How were they well-known in roots rock music circles and not so much with radio listeners and album buyers?  Or were they, and we just didn't realize it? Rockpile began as the name of the first solo album by Dave Edmunds, released in 1972. Edmunds plays almost all the instruments except for bass and backing vocals, The album included a 1970 single, "I Hear You Knocking" - a #1 song in Britain He billed his band as Dave Edmunds and Rockpile.  It eventually included  Edmunds (vocals, guitar), Nick Lowe (vocals, bass guitar), Billy Bremner (vocals, guitar), and Terry Williams (drums) In their heyday, Rockpile recorded enough material for five studio albums, though only one (Seconds of Pleasure) was released under the Rockpile name.  Tracks on Wax 4, Repeat When Necessary, and Twangin' - all Dave Edmunds solo albums- were released under his name. One more (Labour of Lust) was released as a Nick Lowe solo album.  And then there was the great lost classic Seconds of Pleasure.   We explore the music Edmunds made as his own, but actually with that Rockpile band. We discover some Nick Lowe (with Rockpile and without -sort of).  We tear into some post-Rockpile music from both artists, weave in how they may have influenced early Elvis Costello, and find a Huey Lewis and the News story, too. Rockpile. It's a bumpy road worth the journey.  Let go. email: rockpoprollpodcast@gmail.com website: www.rockpopandroll.com

The Journey and Legacy of Sweetwater's Uncelebrated Icon - An Interview with the late Austin de LoneIn this interview, which took place in October 2022 before Mount Tam Media launched its Tales From The Green Room podcast, Austin de Lone sits down with host Dennis Strazulo to discuss his rich musical journey and his pivotal involvement with Sweetwater Music Hall, as the venue approached its 50th Anniversary. This is the raw recording of Dennis's visit with Austin for the purpose of writing a feature story on Austin for Mt. Tam Media's Mill Valley Living Magazine to celebrate that event. With Austin's recent passing, the recorded conversation was re-purposed to release as this special podcast episode, honoring Austin's lasting legacy.Moving to Sweetwater in the early 1970s, Austin recounts the creation and rise of his band Eggs Over Easy, their unexpected London ventures working with Chas Chandler (The Animals, Producer and Manager for Jimi Hendrix), recording at the famed Olympics Studio, and the birth of the pub rock scene. He also discusses the transformation of Sweetwater into a cornerstone of the local music scene, brining the venue to national fame as he worked with John Goddard of Village Music and Sweetwater's beloved owner, Jeannie Patterson, highlighting key interactions with notable musicians like Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe and so many more.  The conversation transitions into Austin's personal efforts in starting the Prader-Willi California Foundation in response to his son's condition. This story captures the essence of a musician's enduring influence on his community and provides insight into the historical and emotional layers of Sweetwater's musical heritage.LinksMill Valley Living October 2022 Feature Story on Austin de Lone Sweetwater Music Hall Website - History

When Chuck Mead was a young boy, he and his sister moved with their parents to Lawrence, Kansas. He got a drum kit as a gift when he was 12, and soon after started playing in the family's band. It was made up of his mom, his dad, his grandparents and uncles who played country and western, and Chuck would also sing songs by Carl Perkins and Elvis. An uncle taught Chuck how to play guitar and by high school, he was playing in bands with friends. He continued to play while attending The University of Kansas, still having a fondness for rockabilly and country, but was also listening to Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Springsteen and even the Ramones. His band, The Homestead Grays, recorded a couple of records and after college, Chuck moved to Nashville. He played in the window of Tootsie's Orchid Lounge and before long, he and Gary Bennett formed BR549. Crowds packed in to see them play Robert's on Lower Broadway. They were an enormous hit, and soon became famous worldwide. English singer, songwriter, and producer Nick Lowe came out of the so-called pub rock scene in the UK in the 70s, and made his mark as a producer (Elvis Costello, Graham Parker, The Pretenders, The Damned), had a "short-lived career as a pop star, and a lengthy term as a musicians' musician", (Bandcamp.) But in his current ‘second act' as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he's released a new set of songs full of more "cool tunes" and rockabilly-inspired guitar playing on a record called, Indoor Safari. Nick Lowe plays a solo set, in-studio. Set list: 1. Love Starvation 2. Different Kind of Blue 3. Cruel to Be Kind

Send us a textOn this episode, we have a listener pick: Nick Lowe and his 1994 album The Impossible Bird. Nick Lowe has been a topic of conversation several times on This Is Vinyl Tap due to the indelible mark the man has left on pop music. Lowe was a bass player, singer and songwriter of the influential pub rock band Brinsley Schwarz.  He was a member of the the fabulous Rockpile. He is a producer of some note, having worked with countless artists including Elvis Costello, the Pretenders, Graham Parker, and the Damned. And he is one hell of a song writer, penning such timeless tunes as "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding," "Cruel to be Kind," "I Love the Sound of Breaking Glass," and "The Beast In Me."Having found himself is a but of a rough creative patch in the late 1980's, his luck changed withe the success "The Bodyguard" soundtrack, which included a cover of "Peace, Love, and Understanding." That gave Lowe the financial freedom to pursue new musical directions and the music buying public were much the richer for it. The Impossible Bird  was a bit of a reboot for Lowe and a different kind of Nick Lowe album; more mature and stripped down, with his vocals front and center. It was not quite country, not quite rockabilly, not quite folk, but a flawless combinations of all of the above. Its a collection of choice covers and fantastic Lowe originals expertly executed by a crack band and easily one of Lowe's finest musical statements that includes some of his most endearing and enduring songs. Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Last May, my son Jasper and my daughter-in-law Hannah asked me what I would like for my birthday. I said what I always say:“Surprise me.”But then Hannah suggested that they get me an 8 track because she knows I collect them. She wanted to know which genre or artist I like. Also, she didn't know how, or where to buy one.“Ebay,” I said, and jumped on there to peruse the recent auctions. I like them sealed, or at the very least in a less worn condition. The first delicacy to appear was this unopened gem, produced by the fine punks at Stiff Records in the year of 1978 (prime time for me). It was a good choice: a vivid time capsule, recorded con brio at the crest of the New Wave, with latter-day Punk attitude.  Ian Dury, disabled, misanthropic satirist, closes the show, spitting his signature “Sex and Drugs and Rock n Roll” - (did he coin that phrase?) Nick Lowe opens the tape with his patented Power Pop, and Elvis Costello is… just amazing. He croons a Bert Bacharach tribute decades before they even worked together, and detonates a searing explosion of his own “Miracle Man,” displaying the Promethean chops that would soon catapult him to stardom. I feel like a grateful fisherman, after Poseidon unexpectedly washes something tasty up on the boat deck.

Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Nick Lowe. Nick Lowe is . . . wait, you don't really need a bio for Nick Lowe, do you? If there's any questions about who he is, please take the time to listen to our lengthy Political Beats episode with guest Matt Murray. In an interview that has been months in the making, your Political Beats hosts get the opportunity to spend a little more than an hour with the legendary Nick Lowe. Cards on the table, both of us were a little nervous to be speaking with one of our musical heroes. Nick made it comfortable and entertaining, as if anything else would be expected. The conversation begins with a discussion about his fantastic new album, Indoor Safari. The record is a collection of songs from EPs released over the past half-decade or so, many of the tunes re-recorded or slightly changed from the initial versions. These performances are so crisp, so lively. “Crying Inside,” is a perfect example of a top-notch, sublimely written and executed, late-career Nick Lowe song. “A Quiet Place” could be the single best band performance on the album. “Blue on Blue,” would fit in alongside anything on The Impossible Bird and the Bacharach-influenced “Different Kind of Blue,” truly benefits from the full band arrangement not heard on the version found on the 20th Anniversary edition of The Convincer. As the liner notes claim, “Indoor Safari isn't a journey back in time -- it's a journey out of time, to a music that stands the test of any time.”We begin our chat in the present but quickly move far afield, with discussions about his early career, the thought process that started his “second half” of music (starting with The Impossible Bird), his songwriting techniques, and a few nerd/fan questions near the end. We hope to have asked a few questions that perhaps haven't been asked before.Be sure to check out Nick and Los Straitjackets live this fall. Tour dates are here (Click on "Show All Dates" to see them all.) If you're out and about, you might see Scot at the Detroit show and Jeff at one of the Chicago shows. After all, we're big fans.
