Send us a textJohn McFee formed San Francisco-based band Clover in the '60s. Their first, self-titled album on Fantasy came out in 1970. Several years later, they came to realize some key people in the UK pub rock scene were big fans of their music. Nick Lowe, Brinsley Schwarz and also drummer Pete Thomas, who called Clover to see if they would audition for the up and coming Declan MacManus, who would soon change his name to Elvis Costello. Clover got the gig, backing Elvis on My Aim is True and John McFee's great guitar work is what you hear on all the classic tracks like “Alison” and “The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes”. John also played steel guitar on Van Morrison's Tupelo Honey and St. Dominic's Preview. The long list of artists he's contributed guitar, pedal steel and vocals for includes Carlene Carter, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, The Grateful Dead, and Boz Scaggs. In '79, John McFee was asked to join The Doobie Brothers, replacing Jeff Baxter. He also formed Southern Pacific with Keith Knudsen of the Doobies and Stu Cook of Creedence. In the '90s that trio became Jackdawg. The release of their fantastic self-titled album was delayed due to the death of their manager. A CD release was temporarily available in 2009, but the album was out-of-print for years. That is, until now. Baxie talks to Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John McFee of the Doobie Bros! Despite being the Doobie's lead guitar player for the last 46 years, John McFee's amazing career has taken him from playing with Van Morrison, Steve Miller, Nick Lowe, Rick James, and many others. He was also in the band Clover which not only backed up Elvis Costello on his first album—the band would eventually become Huey Lewis & The News. In 1990 John started a project with Keith Knudsen from the Doobie Bros and Stu Cook from CCR. Together they recorded an album under the name Jackdawg. Unfortunately, that was shelved before it got released following the death of their manager. The record would go unreleased for 18 years. Art school Futurists and singalongs in Cooper's Bar, Denmark Street and suburbia's (two) ups and downs – and earbudded Londoners on the Tube, sailing away on their own private playlists. “In my head,” confides STEVE ‘AVO' LINDSEY, making his solo long-playing debut just five decades into his music career, “this sounds like a Nick Lowe album.”   But given that PING is the work of the Wirral-born bassist of DEAF SCHOOL and frontman of new wave chart act THE PLANETS who would later become a music exec known for his ears and acumen, it's hardly surprising that these twelve tracks offer more than just fond footnotes to Lowe.   Factor in Lindsey's love of Donald Fagen and Jimmy Webb, Arctic Monkeys and Tom Waits, Todd Rundgren and Nashville-style storytelling, and his lo-fi, groove-driven takes on Motown, and you'll have an idea of what to expect from this joyful, playful, gorgeously varied sheaf of love letters to music and Merseyside, sweaters and Swordfishtrombones.   Listen to tracks like the finger-clicking soul of ‘Beautiful 45' and the bottoms-up vaudeville of ‘Cheers My Dears', the rockaway baroque pop of ‘Royal Iris' and the sultry Latinisms of ‘To Know You Better', and you'll also hear warm and winning musical contributions from family and friends: Lindsey's daughter Uainín Lindsey on backing vocals; the late Tony ‘Wims' Wimshurst, ex-Planets and Nasty Pop, on lead guitar; and drummer Josh McCartney, the nephew of a local lad named Paul.   But first, some back story. When Deaf School invented itself in 1974 at Liverpool College of Art, Lindsey, one of two Steves in the band, modestly opted for the moniker Mr Average. Deaf School would become (nearly) famous for its extravagant Sparks-via-Kurt Weill pop and its distinctly un-average cast of sirens, showmen, keyboard philosophers and future superstar producers.

"Hangover Terrace" The Ontario-born Ron Sexsmith is one of the great musical treasures on this weird and troubled planet. And we need him now more than ever. Over the course of his decorated career, the three-time Juno award-winning singer/songwriter has put out close to twenty winning albums and here's a quick note about that--his discography is perfect with not even a trace of a dip of quality. In fact, every album seems to top the last one, which is saying a lot because every album is absolutely brilliant. If this sounds like hyperbole, it's not. From his self-titled album to Cobblestone Runway to Retriever to Blue Boy to Carousel One to his brand new record Hangover Terrace, which is one of the greatest album titles ever, by the way, Ron Sexsmith always delivers the goods. It's hard to think of a musician who sings with such elegant precision and poetic finesse. Like Sinatra or Costello, his phrasing is unique and distinct--all it takes is a syllable of a song and you know instantly know it's him. He's toured with John Hiatt, Squeeze, Coldplay and Nick Lowe and his songs have been covered by folks like Rod Stewart, Nick Lowe, Emmy Lou Harris, Feist, Michael Buble, and Stevie Nicks. Nick Lowe had a big hit on the top 40 back in the day called “Cruel to be Kind.” Interesting idea, but how about this one? “Kind to be Kind.” Now there's a novel idea. And it's the guiding principle of copywriter and agency owner Cath Reohorn, who has taken this philosophy to £1 million/month in revenues for her clients. So you don't have to do the math, that's about $1.3 million per month. Now, how does she do it? Today, on Copywriters Podcast, you'll find out exactly how. Now, back to the idea of “Kind to be Kind.” Cath's agency is called Kind Copy, and she defines the guiding principle this way: “Kind copy stands for not twisting the knife. This anti-cruelty stance isn't just an ethical standpoint. It's a tactical advantage for services where the client needs to be actively involved in their process (like coaching and consulting).” We'll dive deep into that in a moment. Britain's greatest living songwriter, Nick Lowe, joins us to talk about his newest album, “Indoor Safari.” Also, Emily St. James and Noel Murray take us back to the island to revisit the significance of the TV series, “Lost.” And Dan Kois revisits selling newspaper subscriptions on a cold winter's night in Milwaukee.

Rockpile?  The band?  How were they well-known in roots rock music circles and not so much with radio listeners and album buyers?  Or were they, and we just didn't realize it? Rockpile began as the name of the first solo album by Dave Edmunds, released in 1972. Edmunds plays almost all the instruments except for bass and backing vocals, The album included a 1970 single, "I Hear You Knocking" - a #1 song in Britain He billed his band as Dave Edmunds and Rockpile.  It eventually included  Edmunds (vocals, guitar), Nick Lowe (vocals, bass guitar), Billy Bremner (vocals, guitar), and Terry Williams (drums) In their heyday, Rockpile recorded enough material for five studio albums, though only one (Seconds of Pleasure) was released under the Rockpile name.  Tracks on Wax 4, Repeat When Necessary, and Twangin' - all Dave Edmunds solo albums- were released under his name. One more (Labour of Lust) was released as a Nick Lowe solo album.  And then there was the great lost classic Seconds of Pleasure.   We explore the music Edmunds made as his own, but actually with that Rockpile band. We discover some Nick Lowe (with Rockpile and without -sort of).  We tear into some post-Rockpile music from both artists, weave in how they may have influenced early Elvis Costello, and find a Huey Lewis and the News story, too.
