The guys are back with a Monday episode of The Real Life Podcast as Tyler, Jay, Wanye and special guest Liam sat down for an hour to talk about their lives and of course, a little bit of Oilers hockey. To kick things off, the guys talked about the wild weekend that went down in YEG. The Edmonton Riverhawks won their first ever playoff game and while Wanye was excited for the team, he took issue with their 20-minute post-game firework show. The Edmonton Elks won a second consecutive football game, which is wildly impressive considering their recent track record. Liam was in attendance and told us what they're doing differently to up the general atmosphere of Elks games. And of course, it was Folk Fest weekend. Tyler and Liam really didn't understand the lore behind the festival, but Jay and Wanye got them up to speed and Jay talked about why it's his favourite event that happens in the city.To end the show, they talked about the news that Evander Kane could be going on LTIR to start the season. Tyler tried to explain the different ways that the Oilers could utilize his cap space and what else the Oilers need to do in order to be cap compliant. Jay was just happy that the team is finally abusing the system.

The last two festival directors join us on The Summer Stew - Terry Wickham - Edmonton Aug 8-11 Many years later the musical leader at Edmonton Folk Festival. As you know, he's a natural storyteller and this year he's telling stories of the growing indigenous component of the festival. Also how it all started to grow within the fest, it involves the Chieftains. Terry talks about how he discovers artists, why certain artists strike a chord in him and how he had to keep a headliner booking secret for 7 months. The complete interview can be heard on the Mulligan Stew Podcast and the video on the terrydavidmulligan YouTube Channel. Jenna Klein Waller - Canmore Aug 3-5 It's year one for Jenna. She has stayed in touch with the other artistic directors. Learning even more as she went. The one thing the festival wanted to focus on was finding a younger audience. Jenna talks about the artists that her younger audience wants to see and hear.

Is there anything better than listening to your favourite band while sitting outside in the sun with friends, family, and fellow music-lovers? Very few experiences can top the feeling you get from soaking up fresh air and soundwaves simultaneously. So, as summer approaches, we bring you "Festival Season" - a special 3-part series on music festivals. Music festivals appear to pop up out of nowhere - in a city park, in the green space beside a lake, or on a farm next to a river. All of a sudden, a field becomes a dance floor for a main stage; or a leafy forest grove transforms into an intimate music workshop. It seems instantaneous, but a festival takes months—and sometimes years—to plan and produce. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly to bring music fans the most entertaining, uplifting, safe, and memorable experience possible. In this series, we talk to a few of the wonderful people that work around the clock to bring us these magical events. Part 1 - SPENCER SHEWEN: Mariposa Folk Music Festival & Riverfest EloraSpencer is the Artistic Director of both the Mariposa Folk Festival and Riverfest Elora. Throughout his many years working with music festivals, he's learned that producing a successful music festival is a juggling act, a game of strategy, and an endurance test. But the payoff is big and joyous and filled with amazing music and good times! In this conversation, Spencer talks about his experience with both festivals, some of the artists that he's excited about presenting this year, and how a cardboard Tony Danza ended up touring with The Beaches rock band. It's time for the final installment of this year's in-person interviews I conducted at the legendary Newport Folk Festival which took place in Newport, Rhode Island, July 28-30. First up, my friends Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran of Illiterate Light stopped by to chat with me about the Bike Stage that they hosted, curated and operated. Jeff and Jake -- a hard-core rocking two-piece by day -- have created a sustainable and entirely off-the-grid solution to set a shining example of how we can mitigate the environmental impact of the live music ecosystem. This is the embodiment of Think Globally, Act Locally!!Next up, I spoke to Jake Ewald of Slaughter Beach, Dog, a Newport Folk first-timer whose alt-folk brand of artistry was a perfect fit for the Harbor Stage audience. I talk to Jake about his powerful songwriting and how very unexpected it was for him to even be at Newport Folk. We share tons of laughs as Jake's comedic timing is spot-on. Slaughter Beach, Dog's new album Crying, Laughing, Waving, Smiling will be out September 22.I also had the pleasure of sitting down with Erich Huffaker and Mariam Diakite of Orchestra Gold, a band with roots both in Oakland, CA as well as Mali, West Africa. I talk with Erich and Mariam about the African Psychedelic Rock movement and how African Dance is integrated into the ethos of this band, whose mission is to "spread healing and community through the universal gift of music." Amen. And to close down the 2023 Folk Fest series, I had a gem of a convo with Newport natives Evan St. Martin and Dave Sarazen of Laden Valley. The first act to hit the stage this year, it was a surreal experience for sure, and they both related to me just how incredibly special it was for them, after years of attending the festival as fans, to actually be up there performing one of their rare live shows. This was an example of the pure joy of live performance for both fans and the artists themselves. It has truly been an honor to bring all these amazing artists to the Roadcase audience. Newport is a truly special experience for artists and fans alike, and I'm glad I can bring some of that excitement and musical joy to all of you. See you all at Newport 2024, and in the meantime, Rock On!!

Thanks so much for dropping by the Three Things podcast. Each week from my basement hideout in west Edmonton, I put together an unremarkable list of the three things I noticed I noticed that left behind some happiness or gratitude. It's a way to keep noticing those things. Kinda circular. This week's list: 1. Sounding familiar - Hear ye, hear ye! The Edmonton Folk Music Festival is back. The sounds of the professionals were, as always, wonderful. But there were other welcome notes, too. 2. Segments – I am still trying to piece together where my thoughts went at a construction site. . 3. Whales – After a few days in the sun at the Folk Fest, you start seeing things! The music in the podcast is original. It comes from the composing heart and mind and the piano-playing hands of Brendan McGrath. The end bells are courtesy Edmonton metal sculptor and humanitarian Slavo Cech. I'm at glenn.kubish@gmail.com Boom.
