We recently were able to attend this interesting panel from Victor Dandridge Jr. and Dr. Vanessa Hintz, Psy.D recently at Fan Expo in New Orleans. It was an engaging panel on the subject of black horror. Check out the description and enjoy the panel: Representations of Black characters in popular media are often rooted in trauma, stereotypes, or some combination of both. The horror genre is no exception, often casting Black folks as comedic sidekicks, characters that lack complexity, or those that are disposable - and often killed off first! Still, there are a number of horror films - made by Black creators, for Black people - that serve to affirm and uplift the lived experiences of Black people in America. This panel of interdisciplinary experts will discuss representations of Blackness in horror, and the impacts on racial identity and mental wellness. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/blerd-ish/support

Victor Dandridge, Jr. is the CEO & President of Vantage:Inhouse Productions, an independent entity that has published some of the most thought provoking and engaging properties to come out of the small press, including critically acclaimed comic book series The Samaritan, Origins Unknown and The Trouble w/Love, as well as the novella series, 8 Mins. In today's episode, he sits down with Sawyer to discuss moderating, the concept of "All Lives Matter" being used as a rebuttal to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and the importance of having sincere interactions with people. Victor stuns Sawyer when he reveals the details of his own "origin story," and the two discuss his transition from being "The 8-Bit Guy" to his current moniker as "The Hardest Working Man in Comics." After analyzing his own personality, Victor reveals his feelings on the tonal similarities between his publication, The Samaritan, and the Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage. As their hour together comes to an end, Victor shares his vision of where he will be in five years, what he wishes he had known when his journey first began, and what he thinks it will take to make artistic spaces more accessible for artists of color. On Fresh is the Word, we like to deliver wisdom through great stories from the minds of bright creatives of pop culture. Through those stories, we like to dissect the journey of our guests and present actionable lessons and advice for our listeners no matter what career or avenue of artistry they pursue. This episode is also a two-parter, both recorded at this years C2E2 convention in Chicago. First, we have the return of the "hardest working man in comics", self-publishing creator from Columbus, Ohio, Victor Dandridge Jr., and then I talk with comic book artist known recently for his work on the Elvira comics on Dynamite Entertainment and Twelve Devil's Dancing, Dave Acosta. During my chat with Dandridge, we talked about his recent Kickstarter campaign for his U Cre-8 Comics brand that was able to raise funds to bring innovative programming and pop cultural engagement to the classroom for 3000 students in Central Ohio, how comics uplift the community and create a purpose for young creators, the next phase of his Vantage:Inhouse Productions publishing imprint, and about being a mentor, and much more. And after that, during my talk with Acosta, we talk about working on the Elvira comics and what makes the Elvira character so timeless, along with the Twelve Devil's Dancing comic he did with writer Erica Schultz (who was on Episode #124), and how he accesses his artistic style on each project. During our interview, we talk about what it takes to coordinate the Artist Alley at Wizard World, the important of Artist Alley for creators and future creators, making the transition into being a full-time comic book creator, the idea of becoming someone important, the importance of failure, and knowing when you’re finished with your project.
