Detroit has long been a city of resilience, innovation, and reinvention. Once the heart of American industry, its rebirth has been marked by waves of economic and social transformation. But as new developments reshape the city, the question remains: who gets to be part of this transformation, and how can Black leadership play a central role? Black entrepreneurs and leaders often face systemic challenges in accessing capital, despite their deep roots and contributions to the city. In fact, research shows that nonprofits led by people of color receive less funding than their white-led counterparts. So how do we ensure that Detroit's renaissance is truly inclusive? How can Black entrepreneurs and organizations access the resources they need to thrive? In the first episode of this two-part series on DisruptED, host Ron J Stefanski sits down with Dwan Dandridge, the CEO and co-founder of Black Leaders Detroit, to explore how his organization is working to create equitable opportunities for Black businesses and nonprofits in the city. The episode highlights the role of Black leadership in shaping Detroit's future. The two discuss…The legacy of Black Bottom and Detroit's history of Black entrepreneurship – and how systemic barriers continue to shape economic opportunities today. How Black Leaders Detroit is addressing funding disparities by creating a financial resource pool controlled by and for Black Detroiters. The importance of self-determination in economic development and how communities can take control of their own financial futures.Dwan Dandridge is a Detroit native and the CEO of Black Leaders Detroit, an organization dedicated to empowering Black entrepreneurs and leaders through equitable funding solutions. With a background spanning skilled trades, business ownership, and community activism, Dandridge's journey is a testament to the power of persistence and self-determination. This week, Donna was joined by guest host Dwan Dandridge and Marc Alexander, the founder of Lite Tuition. In 2009, Marc Alexander was a senior at Kettering University struggling to finance his next semester of school. When word of his struggles to secure a student loan reached his local paper, he was blessed to receive an anonymous check in the mail to cover the rest of his education. The check came with one message, "Pay it forward," and Marc set out to do exactly that.In his mission to support other students struggling to finance their education, Marc created the company Lite Tuition, a social tech company that empowers students to increase their fundraising potential through a custom built crowdfunding platform. Light Tuition is a beacon of hope for those burdened by financial struggles due to student loans debt. For more information on Marc Alexander and Lite Tuition, click here. Originally uploaded June 11, re-edited September 5. Chris Holman welcomes Dwan Dandridge, Chief Executive Officer · Black Leaders Detroit, Detroit, MI. Dwan was among the interesting guests that MBN didn't catch up with while conducting 50 interviews at this year's Mackinac Policy Conference on Mackinac Island at the Grand Hotel. Chris had several topics he wanted to find out from Dwan in this conversation: What is Black Leaders Detroit? Are black entrepreneurs still facing disparities in accessing capital? How much support have we provided for black entrepreneurs? Who is our ideal member? Where does our funding come from? How can someone become a member? Leading up to #MPC24 Dwan was among a group of people that were riding their bikes 377 miles throughout Michigan to raise money and awareness about Black entrepreneurs. Dwan Dandridge led the effort. “To figure out what does it look like to really be a good neighbor to other people in this great state of Michigan,” Dandridge said. “We're finding that once we get in front of each other, sit down and have a conversation, we find out that we have way more in common and we're looking for ways to make sure that we're intentionally working together.” Dandridge said the bikers met with groups along the way in various cities to talk about equity, race, and how to move past barriers which often lead to division. Dandridge then attended the Mackinac Policy Conference. For more on his interaction with the Detroit Regional Chamber over the past few years go to: https://www.detroitchamber.com/?s=Dandridge About Black Leaders Detroit: AN EQUITABLE SOLUTION FOR DETROIT In Detroit, 80% of the population are of African descent, but only a chosen few have been funded to lead the city's “comeback.” Black Leaders Detroit will change that by challenging 1 million people to give at least $1/week to elevate changemakers of African descent in the city. Fully aware that Detroiters of African descent have never lacked creativity, viable economic strategies, entrepreneurial zeal, or innovative business models, Black Leaders Detroit aims to diminish the disparities by providing the one thing that has been lacking: financial support. At Maggie Walker HS in Richmond, VA, Bob Dandridge followed in the footsteps of Arthur Ashe and Willie Lanier. Amazingly, all 3 would end up in their respective sports' Halls of Fame. In the NBA he paired w/ Kareem Abdul Jabbar (then Lew Alcindor) and Oscar Robertson to win an improbable title for the third year Bucks, and then he returned to the East Coast to win a title with Washington, completing a daunting front line of himself, Elvin Hayes, and Wes Unseld. Terrific stories from the man they called the Greyhound. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Campbell Rutherford is a rising junior studying Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. Blind since birth, she is passionate about ensuring that blind individuals can access the resources necessary for them to succeed in school, the workplace, and life in general, particularly in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Before college, Campbell worked as both a website accessibility tester and an assistive technology instructor, specializing in teaching students to access and present mathematics materials, and she continues to take any opportunity she can to tell her story and educate others about the importance of assistive technology in the daily lives of people like her. In her free time, Campbell enjoys playing piano, reading, writing, and spending time with her family, friends, and six rescue cats. Liza Rutherford is a choreographer from Dandridge, TN, and is the homeschool mom of two girls, Campbell and Harris, and wife to Mike. After a lengthy journey to get an accurate diagnosis for Campbell, suddenly the Rutherfords were immersed in the deep waters of acquiring services and an education for a braille reader in a rural Appalachian community with limited resources. After 3 years of Montessori School and 3 years of public school, they settled on homeschooling Campbell for grades 5 through 12. It was a fantastic 9 years of exploring, networking, and learning as a family, and ultimately led to Campbell now thriving in Cambridge, MA as an applied mathematics major at Harvard. In her free time, Liza enjoys reading, knitting, cooking, going to the theatre, and back-porch-sitting with her family in the hills of East Tennessee. Liza and Campbell sat down with us recently to share their journey from diagnosis and early intervention to combatting low expectations in schools to their journey all the way to Harvard!

What's up, dudes? I've got songwriter Chad Wonsik here to talk all about the 1985 horror comedy "Fright Night!" It's the ultimate '80s cheese, full of nonsensical shark-inspired vampire teeth and next-level bat special effects!Charley Brewster is a typical teenage horror-film junkie trying to be more intimate with his girlfriend Amy. When a mysterious new neighbor named Jerry Dandridge moves next-door, strange events occur and disappearances abound. Charlie becomes increasingly convinced Jerry is a vampire. Nobody believes him, of course. Jerry, however, realizes Charlie is on to him, and brutally confronts him. He even transforms his best friend Evil Ed into a vampire. After Amy is kidnapped, Charlie turns to the only person who he believes could help: washed-up television vampire killer Peter Vincent. The pair return to Dandridge's house, kill his ghoul(?)/golem(?) guardian Billy as well as Evil Ed, and blast Jerry to dust with sunlight. Oh yeah, Amy is restored to her human state.Has-been horror host? Check. Menacing antagonist? Yep. Companion melting into goo and sand? Uh...I gues... So grab your cross and holy water, pack your wooden stakes, and hunt vampires to this episode all about "Fright Night!" Merle was born in Okinawa, Japan to a mother of Korean and Japanese descent and an African-American father serving in the U.S Force. Growing up in Nebraska, but not into football, Merle didn't know where she fit. A friend encouraged Merle to choose drama as a study because she was told it was "easy". Little did Merle know that the drama department would be the community she had been longing for and that expression would give her the platform to explore social conditions and and the emotions that must be exposed to understand and accept each other. Merle graduated college and had a wild inclination that New York was where she needed to be to fulfill her purpose. With $107 in her pock, a packed Uhaul and an ailing kitten, she drove to New York and landed in the sea of many hopeful artist. Merle was still figuring out what was cool and learning everything on the fly. At the time a non-equity actor, she heard that everyone in town was going to audition for "Jesus Christ Superstar", so she decided to learn a song and stand in line at 4am to hopefully be given the opportunity to audition. At 1pm the casting director not only called her in to the room, but gave her the space and the light to shine. Even though most things came to Merle very easily, she was still doing what she considers "on the job" training and chasing after an idea or feeling of what it is to be an actress. After a job replaced her, a blessing in disguise, Merle accredits her acting coach Warner Loughlin for giving her the strength and confidence to approach every role with ease and unwavering sense of responsibility to the intention and message of the role. After working three jobs to support her theater career, Merle Dandridge landed herself in the company of Oprah and now holds the honor of portraying Grace on OWN's hit show, GREENLEAF. This woman's 25 year journey is nothing short of resilient, spiritual, and guided.
