Welcome to Pause for Effect: A Podcast for Emerging Artists, by an Emerging Artist. Check in every Thursday for new episodes, wherever podcasts are available.
In an episode that we definitely thought was scheduled to publish on time than didn't, the boys start off discussing their shortcomings as to the challenge they issued each other in Episode 4. This expands into some talk about critical race theory, Watchmen, and Heavy by Kiese Laymon before we get into the actually comic book talk. As the conversation gets going, Caleb talks about how comic books came into his life in middle school, how he grew up liking a different Flash than is on TV, and Aqua Lad. When Sawyer brings up getting a detention because he once said "Superman: Red Son" in Spanish class, the boys have a version of the stereotypical "Heath Ledger WAS Joker" conversation. For the quiz, Caleb attempts to trick Sawyer with some obscure comic book titles in hopes that he can't guess what they're about. This week on the podcast, we are here to remind you that police violence and brutality still exists, even though the protests have started to die down. As we recorded on the weekend of all of the marches back in June, some of the information is outdated, but left in for the sake of clarity. TODAY, Sawyer talks about growing up white and failing to notice microaggressions of racism, having openly racist people in his life, and being a victim of American ignorance. Caleb throws Black superheros into the mix, while also discussing how watching diverse television as children gave him a unique perspective, and how Gattaca could actually be the future of the human race. To wrap it up, the boys wrap it up with an analysis of how the film and television industry have a fine line to walk in terms of historic portrayals, and their disappointment with the lack of leadership at this moment in history. If you would like to donate to any funds, causes, or charities that support Black Artists, Black Lives Matter, or any part of the movement, please feel free to visit https://nymag.com/strategist/article/where-to-donate-for-black-lives-matter.html for a comprehensive list of 153 routes for donations. Another episode that's three days late... BUT HEY, at least we're consistent, right? In this week's episode, Caleb attempts to figure out how to make the calzone that he bought while the guys discuss being athletically challenged as children. Then, as one might expect from two nerdy twenty somethings, the conversation turns into Caleb regaling the audience with an abbreviated version of the drama that is Doublelift's career. Other talking points include The Undertaker's WrestleMania Streak, the pack mentality behind supporting a team, and the problem behind "The Big Three" super team mentality. Recorded May 14, 2020 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pauseforeffect/support
In this week's episode, Caleb wears a gray headband that Sawyer attempts to describe, and the guys decide that nobody from their high school listens to this podcast. PLUS, Caleb does an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE Ricky Gervais impression, Sawyer talks about actors who don't concern themselves with backroom dealings, and Caleb's quiz teaches everyone what year Shawshank Redemption was released! PLUS - oh... wait... that's it. Or there's more! You'll have to listen to find out. Recorded: May 7, 2020 --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pauseforeffect/support
Three days later than promised, the debut episode of OUTSIDER INSIGHTS is here! Today's episode is filled with brilliant insight on not being in the mood to sing (yesterday), "since you the are", StarKid Musicals, how old the actors in Grease were when they filmed the movie, Caleb's squeaky desk chair, Broadway's reluctance to embrace streaming, ... AND MORE! Plus, Caleb attempts to tell Sawyer what musicals are about based only on their titles, leading to unexpected hilarity, with little to no accuracy. OUTSIDER INSIGHTS PREMIERING JULY 6, 2020! After many years of unknown anticipation, this 3/4 Caucasian duo has finally worked up the courage to do what no other straight men have done before: give their unsolicited (and almost certainly unqualified) opinions on things you never asked about. From the creator of Pause For Effect comes a new bi-weekly series that is a sometimes comedic - mostly extremely time-consuming - buddy talk show about anything and everything under the sun! Hosted by Sawyer A.S, and featuring Eternal Guest Star Caleb Gelatt, this podcast is sure to make you wonder, "What exactly made me want to listen to this?" Tune in every other Monday beginning July 6th to hear these two outsiders give insight on things you definitely don't care about! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pauseforeffect/support
Victor Dandridge, Jr. is the CEO & President of Vantage:Inhouse Productions, an independent entity that has published some of the most thought provoking and engaging properties to come out of the small press, including critically acclaimed comic book series The Samaritan, Origins Unknown and The Trouble w/Love, as well as the novella series, 8 Mins. In today's episode, he sits down with Sawyer to discuss moderating, the concept of "All Lives Matter" being used as a rebuttal to the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and the importance of having sincere interactions with people. Victor stuns Sawyer when he reveals the details of his own "origin story," and the two discuss his transition from being "The 8-Bit Guy" to his current moniker as "The Hardest Working Man in Comics." After analyzing his own personality, Victor reveals his feelings on the tonal similarities between his publication, The Samaritan, and the Netflix series Marvel's Luke Cage. As their hour together comes to an end, Victor shares his vision of where he will be in five years, what he wishes he had known when his journey first began, and what he thinks it will take to make artistic spaces more accessible for artists of color. Joey Logan is an actor, barista, and - according to his website - hopefully a future zumba instructor. After graduating from Wright State University with a BFA in Acting, he relocated to Cincinnati, and has spent ample time with The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s main stage seasons. On this episode of Pause for Effect, Joey sits down with Sawyer to discuss how the pandemic has affected live events, making videos for TikTok, and his complex exploration of King Lear through the lens of Restoration! in college. Sawyer asks Joey about his feelings toward theatres that are now streaming their productions for free, and Joey walks listeners through the struggle of mowing his neighbor's yard. After talking about his childhood best friend, feeling burnt-out, and reminiscing about his time in college, Joey offers a glimpse into what he hopes his life might look like five years from now. Caleb Gelatt is an aspiring author, pizza eater, potential government operative, and altogether unqualified to be a guest on this podcast…yet here we are. A graduate of Calvin University, Caleb sits down to talk with Sawyer about his time at college, how growing up in a multiracial religious household has influenced his outlook on life, and how everything in his life helped him become passionate about storytelling. The two discuss their shared interest for film, going in-depth on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the letdown that was Star Wars: Episode IX, and the importance of leading female characters in all forms of entertainment. To round out the episode, Sawyer poses the hardest question of them all: What are Caleb's opinions on the first female Doctor in Doctor Who? After briefly touching on his time at Fairleigh Dickinson University, his work with Disney Theatricals, and the fact that he was a part of the social media team for Hamilton, Brant shares a story about the Production Assistant who worked on Turning 15 On the Road to Freedom before Sawyer joined the show in January 2019. The two then do a deep-dive into the wild experience they had working on a "touring production" of Stand By Your Man, and Brant shares his advice for someone just entering the field. Anna Naderer is an Event Manager and a graduate of University of Cincinnati's College Conservatory of Music Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Stage Management program. A lifelong friend of Sawyer's, the two discuss the similarities between the food industry and the world of theatre, the role of the stage manager during a production, and how she shifted from a childhood focused on STEM to work in the arts. Anna takes a moment to advocate for the importance of theatre and the arts in schools, after which she maps out exactly how she became a member of the Monster Jamily.
