Based on the viral web series from Kane Parsons, which itself was inspired by creepypastas, Backrooms is the latest horror movie to blow up the box office. It is currently A24's highest grossing film to date, with $213 million after its second weekend. Does Backrooms reinvent the wheel though? Join us as delve into the ins and outs of this liminal space horror, including how the visual effects were achieved, and whether there is a deeper meaning to the narrative. REC (2007) found footage horror gets the Cutting Deep into Horror treatment as Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfilock themselves inside one of the most terrifying Spanish horror movies ever made. Directed by Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, REC is a lean, relentless Spanish found footage zombie horror classic that follows a TV reporter and her cameraman into a Barcelona apartment building where a routine emergency call becomes a sealed-off nightmare. In this episode, Henrique and Rachael dig into why REC still feels so scary, eerie, immediate, and brutally effectivenearly two decades later. From the firehouse ride-along setup to the escalating quarantine, from the infected attacks to the unforgettable night-vision finale, this is a movie that understands exactly how to use shaky camera chaos without losing the audience.Inside this episode:Why REC works so well as found footage horror — and why the news crew setup makes the camera feel natural instead of forced. The apartment building as a horror trap — claustrophobic hallways, locked exits, frightened residents, and a quarantine that keeps tightening.Spanish zombie horror vs. American remake energy — including comparisons to Quarantine and why the original feels rawer and more dangerous. The Tristiana Medeiros reveal — how the movie shifts from outbreak horror into something more demonic, strange, and unforgettable. The final darkness — why the night-vision climax remains one of the most iconic endings in modern found footage horror.Henrique and Rachael's final thoughts on why REC is one of the strongest found footage films they've covered so far.REC was reportedly produced on a roughly $2.1 million budget and earned about $23 million worldwide, making it a major international success for Spanish horror and one of the defining found-footage genre entries of the 2000s.
“The Killing Cell” is an awesome found footage film that's been tearing up the festival circuit with awards and nominations! Writer/director/producer and actor Karsen Schovajsa and his crew pulled together a nostalgic horror flick that captures the same eerie energy as “Hell House LLC” and “Grave Encounters.” I was lucky enough to check out a screener, absolutely loved it, and had to bring Karsen onto the podcast to talk all about the making of this soon-to-be cult hit! Make sure to follow TheKillingCellMovie, DeadRenegadeFilms, ScreenSanctity (James Bessey, co-director)and Karsen_Thomas3 for updates on the film. Paranormal Activity, found footage horror, demonic hauntings, and the nightmare of being watched while you sleep take center stage in this episode of Cutting Deep into Horror, as Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi dig into the low-budget movie that turned a bedroom doorway, a static camera, and a few impossible noises into modern horror history. This week, Henrique and Rachael discuss Paranormal Activity, the 2007 found footage supernatural horror film written and directed by Oren Peli, starring Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat. The movie follows a couple who begin filming their home after a disturbing presence seems to become more active at night, and that simple setup helped turn the film into one of horror's biggest micro-budget success stories. AFI lists Oren Peli as director, writer, cinematographer, and editor, with Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat in the cast; Box Office Mojo lists the estimated budget at $15,000 and the worldwide gross at $193,355,933.Henrique and Rachael get into why Paranormal Activity still feels eerie, why its bedroom-camera setup works so well, and how the movie weaponizes waiting. This is not glossy haunted house horror. It is a movie about small sounds, weird behavior, relationship tension, and the terrifying idea that something may be standing in the room while you are asleep.Inside this episode:• Why Paranormal Activity became a found footage phenomenon — Henrique and Rachael talk about the film's perfect timing, its word-of-mouth power, and how its low-budget realism helped make it feel scarier than more polished studio horror.• Katie and Micah's relationship as horror fuel — The episode digs into the uneasy dynamic between Katie and Micah, including how Micah's ego, skepticism, and need to keep filming make the haunting feel more personal and more frustrating.• Less-is-more supernatural terror — From bedroom shadows to long silences, tiny movements, footsteps, doors, and nighttime dread, the conversation looks at how the film turns minimal effects into maximum tension.• The power of found footage believability — Henrique and Rachael compare Paranormal Activity to other found footage movies, including Cloverfield, while discussing why roughness, improvisation, and simplicity can make horror feel more immediate.• The ending and alternate endings — The episode covers the final escalation, Katie's possession, Micah's fate, the psychic's warning, and why the last image is so important to the film's impact.• Why the movie still matters — Whether you think it is terrifying, overhyped, or somewhere in between, Paranormal Activity helped reshape mainstream horror and proved that a scary idea, executed with discipline, could hit harder than a monster in full view.Where to watch Paranormal Activity in the U.S.:Currently, Paranormal Activity is listed as streaming on Paramount+, Paramount+ via Amazon Channel, and fuboTV. It is also listed for digital rental or purchase through Fandango at Home, Apple TV, and Amazon Video. Paramount+ also has an official movie page for the film. From a creepy 2019 message board image to Kane Pixels' viral YouTube series, Reddit deep dives, TikTok rabbit holes, and analog horror aesthetics—this episode explores why empty hallways, buzzing fluorescent lights, and yellow walls tap into something primal about being lost nowhere.Inside this episode:• Why The Backrooms are trending again with the A24 film arriving tomorrow • How a simple empty yellow room became a modern creepypasta legend • Why liminal spaces feel so familiar, lonely, and unsettling• How Kane Pixels helped turn internet horror into cinematic found-footage nightmare• Why the scariest thing about The Backrooms may not be the monster - but the architecture itselfThis is a quick, creepy, casual dive into the internet horror phenomenon that made empty hallways feel like a doorway out of reality.

Eerie found footage chaos meets scary viral marketing mystery in Cloverfield (2008). Director Matt Reeves, writer Drew Goddard, and producer J.J. Abrams crafted a mature-themes monster movie that redefined how handheld perspective creates terror. Henrique Couto & Rachael Redolfi revisit the kaiju-style attack, NYC devastation, and cult-classic status of this explosive creature-feature on Cutting Deep into Horror—one of the 2000s' most unsettling disaster horrors.Cloverfield remains a cult-favorite found footage monster movie built on shaky-cam panic, post-9/11 imagery, mysterious viral marketing, and the unforgettable sight of New York City collapsing under something enormous, unknowable, and very, very hungry.Inside this episode:Henrique and Rachael dig into why Cloverfield still works as a found footage horror movie, even with a studio-sized monster spectacle roaring behind the handheld camera. They revisit the original mystery-box marketing campaign, the untitled teaser, the online speculation, the Lost and Godzilla rumors, and the way the film turned pre-release confusion into a major part of the experience. The conversation walks through the movie's biggest nightmare images: the Statue of Liberty's head in the street, the collapsing city, the subway parasite attack, the rescue mission for Beth, the helicopter crash, Operation Hammer Down, and that final Coney Island clue hiding in plain sight. They also get into the film's lingering connection to 9/11-era disaster imagery, why handheld horror depends so heavily on realism, how Cloverfield compares to The Blair Witch Project and other found footage films, and why the movie's sense of panic still feels unusually immediate.Plus, they discuss the cast, Matt Reeves' later career, Steven Spielberg's reported influence on the ending, the monster's mysterious origin, and whether Cloverfield still holds up nearly two decades later.Where to watch Cloverfield (U.S.):Free with ads on Pluto TV: https://pluto.tv/us/on-demand/movies/5bd3338967f34cef7af44a37

The boys pack their bags and go for a hike with Rowan's pick, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT (1999)! It may not have invented found footage, but is it still the blueprint every shaky-cam nightmare is chasing? Does the "witch" still get under our skin, or are we too desensitized to twig bundles and rock throwing? Creep (2014) is one of the most unsettling found footage horror movies of the 2010s, and in this episode of Cutting Deep into Horror, Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi dig into why Patrick Brice's microbudget nightmare still works so well. This episode centers on Creep, the 2014 psychological horror film directed by Patrick Brice and built around the deeply unnerving chemistry between Mark Duplass and Brice himself. The uploaded episode notes describe the discussion as a deep dive into trust, manipulation, ethical boundaries, filmmaking, and emotional vulnerability, with the hosts also teasing One Cut of the Dead for next week. Inside this episodeWhy Creep feels so real and why its awkward, intimate style makes the horror hit harderJosef as a manipulator, using warmth, humor, and vulnerability as weaponsFound footage tension and how the film turns normal social discomfort into dreadFilmmaking ethics and performance, including how the movie comments on directors, subjects, and emotional exploitationHenrique and Rachael's own filmmaking stories, including videography and client-boundary experiences that echo the film's anxietiesThe final act and ending, and why the movie lingers long after it is overThese themes line up closely with the episode chapters and summary embedded in the uploaded transcript file, including sections on wedding videography struggles, first impressions, the shift in atmosphere, the Peachfuzz reveal, manipulation, and filmmaking truths. About the filmCreep premiered at SXSW on March 8, 2014. It was directed by Patrick Brice, with story credit shared by Patrick Brice and Mark Duplass, and it has gone on to become a modern cult favorite in found-footage and psychological horror circles. It stars Mark Duplass as Josef and Patrick Brice as Aaron. Where to watch (U.S., this week)Current U.S. availability appears to include Netflix, Netflix Standard with Ads, Amazon Prime Video, and Amazon Prime Video with Ads for streaming, with Amazon Video and Fandango At Home showing rental and/or purchase options. I'm only listing options that were corroborated across multiple sources. Henrique Couto and Rachael Redolfi go beyond a surface-level review and really get into why Creep feels so disturbing, how Josef weaponizes performance, and why the movie doubles as a nasty little commentary on storytelling itself.

Thomas Eliot is a horror movie enthusiast and filmmaker from a small town in Colorado. Palmer, and recognizes excellence in the field today. .THE PHILIP EXPERIMENT is a found footage horror film, that takes its name and inspiration from a 1972 parapsychology experiment that invented a fictional character - named Philip - and then allegedly communicated with that entity via séances. In Thomas' film, a team of paranormal researchers led by an unscrupulous documentary filmmaker also try to summon the ghost of a fictional character. The madness returns! Found footage style. This year's panel of judges includes Derek Rosenberg from Third Channel Podcast, filmmaker Jack Hunter of Paranoia Tapes: The Movie, Super Patron Nureldin, our main man Pedro, and our very own Brian. Thanks for listening!
Growing up, we were fans of The X-Files. Reboots have been a mixed bag, however. That does not stop us from being excited about Ryan Coogler's upcoming take on the series. As we speculated last week, The Last Drive-In aired its final episode. According to those in the know, there will be more to come. The first movie this show throws a lot at the wall. It is a supernatural horror movie with a haunted house, ghosts, and cursed objects. Plus, there are twins, a blind medium, and a monster. Oddity makes it work thanks to patient writing and some of the best placed scares we have ever seen. We have covered lots of found footage on our show. Bodycam is the first one to make one of us feel physically ill. And it had nothing to do with what is in the movie. Its chaotic pacing and extra shaky shaky cam will make this a difficult watch for anyone with a weak stomach. It does try to do something different by having a semblance of a plot. This works until it doesn't. After a great set-up, Bodycam runs out of ideas. The first and biggest issue happens almost immediately. There is no reason for anything in the movie to be happening. As things progress, it becomes more convoluted and less enjoyable. Maybe it is better for found footage movies to have no plot. This Week in Horror History (Mar 9–15) is your weekly horror release-date rundown—with where to watch (U.S.), a deep-cut spotlight, and a weekly recommendation built for nights when you want your horror a little meaner, stranger, and more paranoid. This week we've got killer kids, franchise reinvention, slow-walk supernatural dread, survival-horror blockbuster energy, and a deep-cut faux-documentary that feels eerily ahead of its time. Inside this episode✅ Horror releases from Mar 9–15Mar 9, 1984 — Children of the CornA Stephen King cornfield nightmare that turned a tiny budget into a franchise: rural isolation, fanatical children, and one of the great creepy-premise hooks of 1980s horror.Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video with subscription; TubiTV, The Roku Channel, and Plex free with ads; rent or buy wherever you rent or buy movies. Mar 10, 2023 — Scream VIGhostface goes big-city in the franchise's nastier New York chapter: subway panic, bodega chaos, and a sharper, meaner pulse.Where to watch: Paramount Plus with subscription; free on Pluto TV. Mar 13, 2015 — It FollowsA modern horror classic that makes sex, distance, and everyday space feel cursed: dream-logic suburbs, synth dread, and a threat that never stops coming.Where to watch: free with ads at Fandango at Home or Plex; Philo with subscription; Kanopy with library card; or rent at the usual suspects. Mar 15, 2002 — Resident EvilA zombie video-game blockbuster that helped prove game-based horror could work as durable theatrical horror.Where to watch: Prime Video with subscription; Hulu with subscription.

If you're one of Chris Stuckmann's 2 million + YouTube subscribers, you've known about his debut feature, the horror film Shelby Oaks, for years -- long before the movie was bought and distrubuted by NEON, maybe even before he started the record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that funded the film. But you might not know all that much about the world Chris grew up in -- and left behind, in part because of his deep love of cinema. It's a world rarely depicted in film: the world of the Jehovah's Witnesss. And that's the setting of the movie he chose for this episode: 2022's You Can Live Forever, a queer, teen romance out of Canada. Then Jordan has one quick thing about another horror film, this time one that just screened at Sundance: Undertone. Feeling Seen is hosted by Jordan Crucchiola and is a production Maximum Fun.Need more Feeling Seen? Keep up with the show on Instagram and Bluesky.

This isn't a mistake, meatsacks! I've been wanting to show you some of the new fictional content I've been working on for awhile now. And the week of Halloween seemed like a great time to do it. This week, I'll be sharing five of my favorite Nightmare Fuels with you here on the Timesuck feed, staring with this story I wrote back in March. It's 1989 and a pawn shop owner has found some chilling home video footage of two film students investigating an urban legend set inside a local abandoned insane asylum. Hope you like it! This episode was scored by Logan Keith. We recommend listening with headphones to experience the full effect of all the creepy background noises. If you like this episode, please let us know wherever you rate and review podcasts. For more episodes of Nightmare Fuel - check out Scared to Death's podcast feed where I've been releasing two a month since February of 2024. Thanks!! Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company.
