My name is Burgundie. I teach yoga at my little studio, Yoga Happiness, in Columbus, Ohio. Yoga is a lifestyle and is in everything. I hope to educate this concept through my classes and this podcast.
Burg and Lauren continue the conversation about identity. No surprise, much of the conversation is related to mental health. It's important to discuss! Here are the links discussed in our Rebel of the Week segment: https://www.harlemglobetrotters.com/News/world-mental-health-day-2019 https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/giving/on-our-sleeves Keep the rebellion alive!
Great job in space, Christina and Jessica, and Stephanie! You make us proud. You are keeping the rebellion alive!
Seriously, we have no topic. And Burg's shirt is once again the same color as the green screen. Also, at minute 23:35 the battery dies and then the lights come back on. Soo...this is an interesting episode for a lot of reasons. Enjoy!
Fair warning, folks, this is just the beginning of a deeper conversation. We will likely pick this topic of Identity back up in episode 26. Burg and Lauren both had rough weeks and realized after recording both episodes 24 & 25 that we didn't get to all the levels of identity that we had wanted to. So, keep hanging on and we'll do more with this! This really is a goodie, as Burg's grandmother would say. Keep the rebellion alive, folks!
In this week's episode, we discuss when science backs up some woo woo stuff! And boy, does yoga have a lot of woo woo. We also discuss if it even matters when science can't back up the woo woo. What do you think? Do you think everything needs to be explained or explainable? Enjoy! And Keep the rebellion alive!
~43 mins The focus of this practice is strength and balance by using standing balance poses! Enjoy!
Lauren and Burg are winging it without Nick and his fanciness in this week's episode where they talk about what their personal yoga practices have become. Life changes. Energy changes. So too should your yoga practice! But can you get over your own ego?! Can Burg and Lauren? Find out in Episode 22 of Yoga Rebels!! Also, find out the Rebel of the week and the book of the week! Keep the Rebellion Alive!
Well, Lauren and Burg had every intention of this being a spectacular episode on Intention. And, in reality, it turned out to be better than we thought it might right after recording. We were exhausted from the week, hadn't really planned it ou (you get to see us planning), and ended up getting derailed in some spots and quite silly in others. Since our intention is to educate and entertain, I do think we accomplished that...just not in the way we had intended. Enjoy the circus. And Keep the Rebellion Alive!
September is suicide prevention awareness month so Lauren and Burg put together a PSA with a sweet anagram to help you recognize the signs of suicidal ideation. If you are thinking of suicide, please talk to someone. Here are numbers you can call: National Suicide Prevention Hotline : 1-800-273-8255 https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org The Trevor Project (geared toward LBGTQ+): 1-866-488-738 www.thetrevorproject.org Keep talking about this to help destigmatize mental health awareness. Reach out to someone if you know they show signs of depression and/or risk for depression or suicide. You may just save their life. Keep a friend alive. Keep the rebellion alive. And may the force be with us all
We are SO excited to get to chat with Sarah Bowen! One of our listeners, Jeff D., suggested we read Spiritual Rebel. We did. Then Lauren got the bright idea to reach out to the author because we felt we found one of our people! Sarah said so many things that we had said but thought we were the only ones! In our interview, we begin by asking her what it means to be an Interfaith Minister. We talk about the pushback to religious words, specifically God. And of course we talk about the Jedi and the Force. We hope you enjoy the video and even just the audio! Thank you, Sarah, for taking time out of your wild book tour to chat with us on Yoga Rebels. Safe travels. May the force be with you always. And Keep the Rebellion Alive! http://www.thisissarahbowen.com https://www.spiritual-rebel.com
~43 minutes Stretching out from my runs in Montana! You'll likely need a couple of pillows or blankets. I talk a lot about form and give just a bit of an update on my Montana trip. Enjoy!
In THIS episode, Lauren and Burg may actually offend you if you think there's no way you're at all culturally appropriating or even MISappropriating anything related to yoga. Was your palo santo given to you by a shaman? Do you consider is holy and sacred and having healing properties because it was blessed and given to you...by a shaman? What about the Sanskrit you use? Are you pronouncing it correctly? Do you know or understand the cultural context or background? At least please acknowledge that you might be appropriating just a little bit. It's ok. We all are, more than likely. We praise our Rebel of the Week, Tessa Thompson, and Burg shares her Book of the Week, The Dharma of Star Wars! You don't want to miss this episode! Keep the rebellion alive!
Oh, Lauren and Burg, being authentic, how endearing. lol. You might think that an episode on being authentic is redundant to the whole point of Yoga REBELS but, ... well, you're probably right. HOWEVER, we even rebel against being rebels in the same way that we practice "moderation in everything, including moderation". In this episode, we really run the gamut from yoga teaching style to what it means to love everyone or anyone, for that matter. We talk about friendship and how, as introverts, we are pretty hardcore in the depth and breadth of the emotions we feel for our proper friends. God, this actually seems like a pretty sappy episode now that I describe it for you. Trust me, though, it's not as sappy as it sounds. We're not like that. lol. In this episode we also premiere two new segments: Rebel of the Week and Book of the Week. Maybe we should call it the Rebel Bookshelf... Keep the rebellion alive, Rebels!!!
This isn't just for women, but mostly it is. TAKE UP SPACE! Stop trying to be little. Stop apologizing for existing! Stop using words that soften what you mean to say. Just f-ing say it! If you mean it, say it. Lauren and Burg talk about how women need to take up space and not apologize for it in all senses. Physically, verbally, intellectually, etc. Be your authentic self. Be big. Be who you want to me. And don't apologize for it. Men, you too. Ok? Good. Glad we talked. Keep the rebellion alive.
Sleeping with your yoga teacher does not lead to enlightenment. It also doesn't make you a better yogi. However, let's not victim blame, here. The teachers hold responsibility. And in this week's episode, Lauren and Burg talk about not only all the creeps in yoga but also other areas. Not only do they talk about MeToo related situations but also just in general when our heroes or celebrities say things that are really rather disappointing. Keep the rebellion alive!
Lauren and Burg continue the thread of conversation that began episodes ago and now streams into the topic of Communication. There are so many forms of communication and levels of anxiety related to many of them. But, just like anything, it takes practice. We talk about what it takes to be a good listener and how it's not easy. and we talk about social anxiety, of course! So, listen to our podcast because it'll make you a better communicator! Oh, and Keep the rebellion alive!
Burg and Lauren talk about Blue Zones - where there are a higher number of people living above the age of 100 - and the importance of community. No one is an island. Humans are social animals. But our work-from-home, deliver-everything-to-me culture is causing a greater number of people to feel isolated. This creates a downward spiral into depression, inflammation, stress, anxiety, and more. Humans are challenging to be around at times. We know. But all the evidence shows that it's good for you. So, suck it up and go out. And keep the rebellion alive.
A Yoga Rebel listener, Jeff, suggested a book called Spiritual Rebel by Sarah Bowen. We read it, determined the author was most definitely a Yoga Rebel and decided to take a deep dive into discussing spirituality, Religion, God, and our experiences with all those things. If you disagree with anything we said or are offended or have any comments, we would love to hear from you! Also, if you're not terribly offended and might like a Yoga Rebels t-shirt of your own, visit https://www.yogahappiness.us/shopyhs Thank you to all our viewers and listeners! We enjoy doing these and hope you enjoy consuming them! Keep the rebellion alive, Rebels!
Take 3 of Lauren and Burg trying to record this week's episode devoted to the history and discussion about America's Pride Month. They discuss some of Hollywood's better known LGBTQ actors and of course the representation in movies. How does the discussion of diversity and inclusion relate to yoga, you ask? Well, it does because it should.
AM Yoga: Pranayama June 10, 2019 by Burgundie miceli
NOTE TO LISTENERS - I put a thumbnail up from the show so you could see that I'm sitting next to my skeleton. A visual helps, I think. Lauren got a job and is taking a week or so off from filming with me while she gets her feet wet. To avoid letting down our gobs of adoring fans, I decided to talk to myself again, just like the good old days. Jack and I talk about the way the Vulcans meditate versus the Jedi and how they are and aren't similar to yoga and Buddhism. I hope you enjoy this! I had fun making it. Next week's episode might feature Jack as well. We'll see. Keep the rebellion alive. Live long and prosper.
47:52 mins Pretty standard hatha practice. All levels. Do what you can! Enjoy.
Lauren and Burg get real in this episode- Lauren's PTSD, Burg's mom with dementia. Watch and learn how they sat with the discomfort and worked through the pain. Spoilers, yoga helped...
In this episode of Yoga Rebels, Burg and Lauren go all over the place talking about telepathy, telekinesis and other powers of the brain and mind. Our main focus is Jean Grey from the X-Men, but of course, there are Star Wars examples and other. Somehow we get onto the topic of Quidditch, but that's par for the course. You'll have to listen to find out how this is at all related to yoga! It is, though! Check out our sponsor, CS Coffee Visit www.CSinstant.coffee Use the code TREE to get 20% off your first order! Yin yoga holds deep simple stretching poses for around 5-minutes each. This time is needed to work on letting the muscles relax so you can get to the tendons and ligaments. It's simple but maybe not so easy. In a Yin practice, remember to breath and relax your muscles. Notice what is the most challenging for you. Is it really the physical part that is most challenging? Or is it mental?
If Burg and Lauren have missed talking about your favorite Artificial Intelligence (droid, android, replicant, robot, Terminators, etc.) put it in the comments. What are your thoughts about the discussion about sentient AI? And, likewise, how do you feel about 3D printed meat? If you're a vegetarian, would you eat it? Let us know your thoughts on these topics. This is SciFi but also really relevant! The future is now! Thank you to our first Patreon supporter, Jimmy! We'd love to have your patronage, too, so we can afford light saber training and even more exciting interviews. We have some folks in mind and may need to offer dollars. But, also, we want to take our show on the road to some nerdy conventions. Check out www.csinstant.coffee especially if you're a hiker or busy person who doesn't want to wait to brew your coffee. Lauren FINALLY saw Captain Marvel and so we talk about how she fits all the criteria for being a wonderful female role model (no pressure Brie Larson!). In the midst of our discussion about something else entirely, we realize that POKEMON ARE SLAVES! What?! Oh, the sadness. We have an off-screen journey in search of a camera battery. What are your passions? We talk about ours! AND INTROVERSION! Surprise, surprise. We think you'll really like this episode. I think both of us have watched it several times, now. Keep the Rebellion Alive!
Burg starts out by sharing her experience watching the streaming version of the Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. And then that circles around to her challenge of balancing fantasy and reality. Yoga for all levels with Burgundie Miceli 42-minutes
In this episode, Yoga Rebels Lauren and Burg talk about Satya -Truthfulness. In particular, they discuss the importance of being true to yourself. They talk about being nerds, what it was like to start teaching yoga, and then they tie in Scully, Mulder, Finn from Star Wars, Snape and Luna Lovegood. Can you think of any other characters that are true to themselves in the face of challenge? Or who aren't true to themselves and suffer for it? Let us know in the comments and we'll discuss in an upcoming episode! We hope you enjoy this! In our next episode, you'll hear our new ending phrase that will replace the well known "May the Force Be With You". We're hoping to start something that will be Yoga Rebels specific. For decades there has been an argument made that the Jedi are actually quite violent and not as pure as they'd like to believe themselves to be. This is the basis for our discussion about the yoga practice of ahimsa or non-violence. Special thanks to our first sponsor, CS Coffee!! We, Lauren and Burg, are BACK with a new format for Yoga Rebels! In New Episode 1 we discuss Aparigraha or non-attachment, non-possessiveness AND THEN connect it to Dr. Who! We'll do this kind of thing going forward. We'll talk about a yoga thing and then try to match it to a nerd thing. If you love Star Wars, Dr. Who, Harry Potter, Alien(s), Star Trek, and any other kind of nerd thing, then you'll love this! Also, we have a new sponsor! (Actually, our first sponsor) CS Coffee Go to CSinstant.coffee Use the code TREE to get 20% off your first order! We hope you enjoy the new format!
This 45-min yoga practice is geared toward all levels. Beginners welcome. Do as much as you can. Let your movements follow the breath. If you're out of breath, slow your movements. If you need to go into Child's Pose to rest, do it. Enjoy!
One of our supports made a comment about meditating to numb. That was quite thought provoking so we talked about it! Do you meditate or practice yoga? Can you relate with doing this to numb out? If so, let us know about it. Yoga Rebels Lauren and Burg are taking a week or so off, so we'll see you again in about 2 weeks!
Yoga Rebels: Let's Talk About Mental Health by Burgundie miceli
Yoga Rebels Patreon patron Christina asked for advice on how to respond to a well-intentioned teacher trying to get you to go deeper into a pose when deeper isn't the goal. Lauren and Burg have a response for that, of course!
Yoga has its history in Hinduism, but as a practice it really has nothing at all to do with religion. Sure there are some bad players out there that have become a little culty, but I think you could say that about a lot of things. Someone looking for fame, money, attention, or whatever will take it to the extreme to woo people into their "church". In this episode, Lauren and Burg talk about the foundation of yoga and how yoga can even enhance your existing belief system.
The hashtag yogaeverydamnday has been around since instagram started, I'm pretty sure. However, the mindful yoga practitioner will recognize that a 90 minute hard asana practice may not be the best thing for them. If that's the case, how can you possibly practice yoga every single day like instagram asks us to? And like the ancient yogis prescribe? Well, listen to the conversation Lauren and Burg have about just this topic.
The instagram posts of yoga poses may not be what they seem. Some teachers and people with a large social media following are sponsored by manufacturing companies to show off their yoga clothing in a way that, we think, goes against the principles of yoga and also add to the existing self-image issues plaguing women, and even men. Lauren and Burg talk about this and other rather frustrating topics on this episode of Yoga Rebels.
Yoga is not a catch-all form of exercise. It is not cardio, it is not the only thing you should be doing to have a healthy body. Much like broccoli isn't the only food you should eat, yoga isn't the only form of exercise you should practice. In this episode of Yoga Rebels, Lauren and Burg talk about this. Believe it or not, this has been a sore spot for some in the yoga world.
Lauren and Burg demonstrate Restorative Yoga and explain how it's different from Yin Yoga. Admittedly, this is a tough one for a podcast since we're showing, but maybe you'll enjoy the listening aspect.
Burg and Lauren, self-proclaim Yoga Rebels, demo yin yoga so you know what it is.
In this last of the Metta series and last YOGA Talks class for a while, we discuss and practice metta toward someone challenging. Don't let someone hold that kind of power over you if just the sound of their voice makes your heart shred. Automatically feeling negative thoughts just because of one person is not healthy for you and not really productive all around. So, let's practice metta toward this person. See if we can at least break that negative hold they have.
Thank you for Dawn for letting me know I forgot to post this! Metta means lovingkindness and can be a very powerful meditation technique. In this first of 4 we practice on ourselves and then a stranger.
New year's resolutions don't work, people, and you frequently end up hurting yourself. You're committing to a lifestyle change, not a 10 day slam. We talk about all of this in our New Year's episode of Yoga Rebels.
In this holiday edition of Yoga Rebels, Burg and Lauren talk about detoxes and diets and all the things associated with holidays that you really need to not do. Or, at the very least, use common sense.
We're practicing Metta again. This time we'll go from wishing happiness upon ourselves, to a neutral person, to a friend and then to a loved one. Listen to the experiences of the students who attended the class! Surprising!
You are your own guru! Yoga teachers are not gods! Don't just follow yoga teachers blindly! Listen to Lauren and Burg talk about the guru problem.
