Introducing a new four-part series, Waves of Change, in collaboration with Oceana. Over the next four weeks, we'll explore the climate, economic, and environmental justice impacts of offshore drilling and plastics. 12 years after the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, fossil fuel companies are drilling deeper than ever before off of America's coasts. Lawmakers seem to have learned little from the oil rig explosion that killed 11 people and spilled more than 200 million gallons of oil into the Gulf over 87 days. However, today's guests are pushing regulators and businesses to do more to prevent the next offshore oil disaster. Cynthia Sarthou is the Executive Director of Healthy Gulf, which is focused on protecting the Gulf and everyone and everything that calls the Gulf home. Diane Hoskins is Oceana's Campaign Director focused on stopping offshore drilling. Vipe Desai is serial entrepreneur dedicated to protecting the ocean and coastal communities by sitting on the boards of organizations like Lonely Whale and AltaSea. Welcome to this week's The New P&L TO THE POINT- a weekly podcast series where, in around 10 minutes each Friday, we break down the key elements of our weekly The New P&L conversations with industry leaders and entrepreneurs. We offer an opinion on the key points from the conversations and tips on how our listeners may practically apply them in their businesses. This episode of The New P&L TO THE POINT analyses this week's The New P&L conversation with Business strategist, Board Executive, Philanthropist, and environmental advocate, Vipe Desai. We consider how individuals can mentally and emotionally reconcile the size of the environmental challenges we currently face with the limited impact each one of us as an individual can have, and how the lessons learned from this can also be applied to the multiple challenges we face in business; the importance of creating a clear vision for a buisness - one that is built on the firm foundations of collaboration and collective belief; the need to deeply focus on the tone and the nature of the words and messaging you use as a leader; the fundamental role trust plays in business, including how to earn it and how to keep it; and how being a business for good can also be very good for the bottom line when done well and with authenticity. If you enjoyed this The New P&L TO THE POINT episode, take a moment to listen to this week's full The New P&L interview with Vipe Desai – episode 72. What connects one of the US's most successful surf and snow festivals, Red Bull's launch in the US; an international non-profit organisation that uses skateboarding and education to empower children and a number of environmental and ocean protection agencies? The answer is the inexhaustible force that is Mr Vipe Desai. Right from his early days as a surfshop retailer to his launching of the H2O Winter Classic event and Red Bull in the US; to his role as board director and master business strategist to multiple companies and his social and environmental advocacy with Skateistan, the Business Alliance for Protecting the Pacific Coast, Vote The Ocean, and the Ocean Institute - Vipe has always been at the cutting edge of business strategy, innovation and creativity, and environmental advocacy. This week, in a wide ranging conversation, we discuss with Vipe how we reconcile the size of the environmental challenges we have with the impact a single company can make on them; the importance of trust in the collaborative process as government, citizens and companies come together to address environmental issues; overuse of the term 'disruptive' in the buisness discourse and what actually defines it, and what the future looks like for retail in a post-Covid world.
