Marilyn is an attorney, CPA, and president of the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation, the private foundation whose generosity helped build The Rose's podcast studio. She has been a Rose patient since the late 1970s, when she came in for her very first mammogram after moving to Houston. Decades later, she found herself in a very different role, as a Stage III HER2 positive breast cancer patient. Her advice is simple and direct: check yourself between mammograms, get second opinions, take care of yourself first, and know that The Rose and organizations like it exist so that every woman, insured or not, has a path to care. Support The Rose HERE. Subscribe to Let’s Talk About Your Breasts on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeart, and wherever you get your podcasts. Key Questions Answered 1. How can a woman with a clean mammogram and ultrasound develop stage three breast cancer within eight months? 2. What does HER2 positive breast cancer mean and how does it affect treatment options? 3. What does a full 18-month breast cancer treatment plan look like, from the Red Devil through post-op chemo? 4. What are the visible side effects of aggressive chemo, including hair, nail, and eyebrow loss, and how do women manage them while working? 5. How did Marilyn continue working through 18 months of treatment and what did that decision do for her mentally? 6. What is the cold cap and why do some patients choose not to use it? 7. What are the stakes of declining post-op treatment, and how should a woman weigh a 45 percent recurrence risk? 8. How does a very private, high-achieving career woman learn to accept help, say no, and make herself the priority? 9. What role does the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation play in supporting The Rose's mission, including the podcast studio? 10. How does self-exam between annual mammograms save lives, and why does Marilyn emphasize it so strongly? 11. What practical advice does Marilyn offer to women facing a breast cancer diagnosis for the first time? Timestamped Overview 00:00 Dorothy introduces Marilyn Sims: attorney, CPA, president of the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation, and the donor behind the podcast studio. She previews Marilyn's stage three HER2 positive diagnosis, 18 months of treatment, and her evolution from private person to open advocate. 00:52 Dorothy describes Marilyn's treatment arc and the shift in her willingness to talk publicly. Episode CTA delivered. 01:49 Dorothy welcomes Marilyn on air and thanks the Crowder Foundation for the studio gift. 02:22 Marilyn gives the history of the Bill and Helen Crowder Foundation: established in 1998 under Bill's will, started with $3.5 million, has given away $6 million over 28 years, and still has millions remaining. 03:36 Marilyn explains Bill's passion for children's charities throughout his life, how the foundation was structured to give in perpetuity, and why Helen carried on that mission after his passing. 04:46 Marilyn explains why The Rose, while not a children's charity, fit the foundation's values. Children are affected by breast cancer, and the studio would carry Bill and Helen's legacy forward. 05:36 Dorothy reflects on the studio's impact, including young mothers sharing stories that reach other young women who don't know they could be at risk. 06:25 Marilyn shares that she first came to The Rose for her very first mammogram after moving to Houston in the late 1970s. 06:55 Dorothy asks about Marilyn's background. Marilyn traces her path from a small town to Pasadena, through night school, a business associate's degree at San Jacinto College, an accounting degree at UH Clear Lake, and ultimately to the University of Houston Law Center. 08:30 Marilyn explains how she chose estate planning over bankruptcy and litigation, combining her CPA credentials with her law degree at Ernst and Young before joining her current firm in 1993. 10:43 Dorothy moves to Marilyn's breast cancer story. Marilyn says she was shocked. She ate right, exercised, had no family history, and never anticipated a diagnosis. 11:24 Marilyn describes her screening history: annual mammograms, ultrasounds in recent years, and a clean scan in October 2023. 11:47 In August 2024, she felt a lump just before Labor Day. She made an appointment immediately. On September 13, 2024, she received her confirmed diagnosis. 12:47 Dorothy notes the cancer was particularly aggressive. Marilyn explains: HER2 positive, stage three, with lymph node involvement under the arm and in the neck, within eight months of her last clean scan. 13:30 Marilyn describes her treatment sequence: eight aggressive Red Devil chemo infusions every two weeks starting October 2nd, then mastectomy with same-day reconstruction on the right side, then 30 rounds of daily radiation. 14:58 Marilyn describes the post-op decision point. Scans came back clear, but declining the 14 lower-grade post-op chemo treatments carried a 45 percent recurrence risk. She chose to continue. She finished February 15th of this year. 15:50 Dorothy congratulates her. Marilyn reflects on the predictable rhythm of the later treatments: okay on day one, fine on day two, flu-like on day three, and cumulative fatigue over time. 16:56 Marilyn describes how she emailed her fellow shareholders the day she was diagnosed, asked to keep her routine, and worked through the full 18 months. Her colleagues' support gave her stamina and purpose. 18:00 Dorothy asks how many organizations Marilyn stays active in. Marilyn says staying busy and giving back, particularly to young women and girls, kept her mind off how serious things were. 18:55 Marilyn shares that she has no biological children but has long mentored young women. Her motivation for philanthropy is giving others the opportunity and role models she had access to. 19:35 Dorothy asks about Marilyn's support system. Marilyn credits her husband, who attended every single treatment, sometimes napping in the chair beside her, and her fully supportive office colleagues. 20:37 Marilyn describes the physical side effects of the Red Devil: hair loss, eyebrow and eyelash loss, fingernail and toenail loss, and varying neuropathy. She notes no two patients react the same way. 21:43 Marilyn explains the cold cap option, its time commitment of five to seven hours per treatment session, and the lack of guarantees. She chose wigs instead. 22:29 Dorothy notes that Marilyn's wig was convincing throughout treatment. Marilyn explains she had a custom wig made to match her hair before it fell out, then transitioned out of the wig after 18 months. Her hair grew back curly for the first time in her life. 23:41 Marilyn acknowledges the ongoing anxiety about recurrence and scans. She manages it with a deliberately positive mindset and a carry bag someone gave her early in treatment that reads "You Got This." 24:23 Marilyn describes how talking with other patients, even those with different symptoms and reactions, helped relieve anxiety and provided perspective. 24:59 Dorothy notes that Marilyn was once extremely private. Marilyn reflects on how treatment gradually opened her up, partly because of the sheer volume of medical appointments and people involved in her care. 26:41 Dorothy recalls watching the shift happen in real time. Marilyn explains the difference between being at the beginning of the tunnel versus the end, and how the inability to plan ahead was one of the hardest parts of treatment. 28:08 Dorothy observes that treatment forced Marilyn to stop being Superwoman. Marilyn agrees and names the lesson directly: career women push themselves to be everything to everyone, but you have to make yourself the priority first. 29:34 Dorothy asks if Marilyn sees herself as stronger now. Marilyn says not stronger exactly, but with a clearer sense of priorities, especially the importance of time and quality over constant activity. 30:09 Marilyn delivers her most direct advice: check yourself between mammograms. A year is a long time, and her cancer went from undetectable to stage three in eight months. 30:55 Marilyn advises listeners to explore all treatment options, get second opinions, and be clear with their care team about whether the goal is cure or minimal intervention. 32:20 Marilyn reflects on her insurance advantage and acknowledges how many women raising families and working jobs do not have the same options. She names The Rose's mobile units and reach across Texas as a critical resource. 33:04 Dorothy thanks Marilyn for the foundation's support and for coming on the show. Marilyn expresses genuine relief at being finished with treatment.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"When you look at where families invest across the spectrum of sustainable and impact investing, climate is really at the forefront. They think about that because, look at our environment, look at the food supply… because of environmental issues. Not withstanding the tariffs too….These are issues that have to be segmented and families are doing the work and they're putting their capital in…(F)amilies really are more and more values aligning their investments, and there's a blurring (of the) line between philanthropy and catalytic investing so that they can invest in climate and do things in all their active portfolios. So I feel like this is just going to increase over time in a pretty significant way." Jolyne Caruso on Electric Ladies Podcast The great wealth transfer of $124 trillion will flow into the hands of women, Millennials and Gen Zrs over the next 30 years, and these are hands that value climate, clean energy, sustainability and social causes more than their forebears. What impact might that have? Listen to Jolyne Caruso, Financial Executive, Investor and Wealth Advisor in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: ● How women tend to donate and invest differently than men do and why. ● Impact and climate-related investing the way women, Gen Z & Millennials do it. ● New spins on "risk" and "reward" & why financial literacy is crucial. ● What the great wealth transfer is and how it could dramatically affect the economy. ● Plus, career advice, such as: "One of the things that I recommend women do, Joan, is to join boards as soon as they can. And I'll tell you why. When I was at Barnard, I was very involved as a student in my class. I was reunion chair and raising money for my class. But it wasn't until I got on the alumni board at Barnard, which led to getting on the big board at Barnard when I was 40 years old, that my life fundamentally changed….This isn't about giving a hundred thousand dollars to your alma mater that you don't have. It's finding boards that will all take women of all ages…My daughter's on the board of a dog rescue company, organization. Get on a board and sit around the table and become a change agent in that regard….Because you network, you get hands-on experience without being at work." Anytime I am mentoring, with a group of young people or students, I give them my number and ask them to use it. I encourage that. And its up to them. -- Gene Camarena, Founder/CEO La Raza Inc. Gene and his wife Yolanda have changed so many lives because they believe in education and they chose to be entrepreneurs They have validated their success by giving of their time, their talents and their treasures to young people. They give and they keep giving with one caveat, you must participate in their generosity. Gene knows how difficult it is to be an entrepreneur and it get started and that's one of the main reasons why he continues to be accessible and open and honest about that path. As an incredibly successful franchisees in restaurants and hotels, Gene will tell you directly that the most fun is sharing that success with the next generation to grow more opportunities for those in the Latino community and with any young person willing to take a risk and continue to take action. Gene's leadership is meaningful effective and never boastful. I thank him for what he has done and continues to do every day for the benefit of others.
"Atlas Daughters is a social venture that I launched…We create an incredibly experiential, immersive experiences that are related to travel. So travel experiences from mothers, female funders and their children or grandmothers and mothers and their children and grandchildren to go and participate in incredibly impactful work that NGOs are doing, specific tangible projects that are worthy of investment and ripe for scale. We bring families to those projects….We identify NGOs that have these incredible projects that are worthy of investment….They may have a very efficient and effective project that they've developed that has the potential to really change millions of lives or to make a huge impact on sustainability or biodiversity or any climate related or health related issues. " Amy Dorbusch on Electric Ladies Podcast Women invest, spend and donate differently than men do, and with the great wealth transfer putting trillions more money into women's hands over the next 30 years, it's important to understand new models women are using. So, today we're going to hear from a woman at the center of new ways of donating that merge lessons from investing and entrepreneurship. Listen to Amy Dornbusch, Founder/CEO of Atlas Daughters, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist and Investor in this enlightening conversation with Electric Ladies Podcast host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: ● The new business models for philanthropy that women, Gen Zrs and Millennials are developing. ● How women tend to donate and invest differently than men do and why ● What the great wealth transfer is and how it could dramatically affect the economy. ● Plus, career advice, such as: "Don't be discouraged by the people that are not your people…Don't seek validation from people's whose values are different than yours. Seek validation in the people whose values are aligned with yours and who you look up to. Those are your people. And find your people because your people will encourage you in every way possible. And I also believe that second acts are often more impactful than the first acts. So when you get to this stage in life and you combine your life experience with your networks, your resources, and your perspective, the amount of impact that you can have later in life will be exponential….I think most middle aged women should feel that they're just getting started." In this Mother's Day edition, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Chen Shu-chu (陳樹菊), a humble vegetable seller from Taitung who quietly donated millions of NT dollars to schools, charities, and orphaned children – while continuing to live a modest life behind a market stall. Born in 1950 into poverty, Chen Shu-chu was forced to leave school at just thirteen after her mother died in childbirth. For half a century she worked at the stall and saved her earnings, giving them to the needy. Chen's lifetime of extraordinary generosity eventually brought her international fame. In 2010 she appeared in Time magazine's list of the world's most influential people. This is an uplifting story of how a seemingly ordinary market vendor became one of Taiwan's most admired figures.

Breaking The Silence with Dr Gregory Williams Guest, Lena Fein, Retired Engineer, Philanthropist and Author of "Shattering the Mirror: A Memoir" This Week's Guest will be Lena Fein. Lena is the author of "Shattering the Mirror," This book is her memoir about her quest to confront her life and see through the distortions of her traumatic past. Her story is a testament that healing is possible at any age and that wholeness is priceless. To Find out more about tonight's guest and their work, visit at their website: https://shatteringthemirror.com/ Don't Forget to check out our guest 's book: "Shattering the Mirror: A Memoir" at Amazon.com: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FDX5R89C?ref=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_C0PQCTNZ5B3YSCHX19FY&social_share=cm_sw_r_ffobk_cso_cp_apin_dp_C0PQCTNZ5B3YSCHX19FY&bestFormat=true This episode of Breaking the Silence follows a profound conversation between Dr. Gregory Williams and author Lena Fein regarding the long-term impact of childhood abuse. They explore the psychological mechanisms of shame and guilt, the journey of "breaking the silence" after decades of suppression, and the transformative power of living an authentic life regardless of age. The "Terrible Twins": Navigating Guilt and Shame Dr. Gregory Williams introduces the concept of "The Terrible Twins"—guilt and shame—which often take up permanent residence in the minds of trauma survivors. These emotions can lead a person to feel unworthy or "dirty," even when the events were not their fault. The host emphasizes that while these feelings are natural responses to trauma, they do not define a person's value. To combat this, survivors must acknowledge their feelings without self-judgment and challenge irrational beliefs that stem from decades-old events. Shattering the Mirror: A Memoir Guest Lena Fein, author of Shattering the Mirror, discusses how her mother's death at age 51 served as a catalyst for her own healing journey from childhood trauma. She recounts a pivotal childhood moment where her mother publicly shamed her for keeping a diary, which led Lena to "shut down" her emotional voice for years to focus on a successful but compartmentalized career in engineering. Fein also reveals a traumatic physical accident at age two-and-a-half where her nose was severed by a glass window. This event created a lifelong subconscious pattern of "rushing" to outrun danger and a struggle with shallow breathing. It wasn't until a corrective surgery in her late 60s that she experienced a "freeway of air," allowing her to finally feel grounded and present. Breaking the Generational Cycle of Silence The dialogue highlights the specific challenges of the post-World War II generation, where domestic abuse was often shrouded in secrecy ("what happens in this house stays in this house"). Fein notes that her mother, likely a victim of her own era's trauma and mental illness, projected her insecurities onto her daughters through relentless shaming. Healing required Fein and her sisters to "compare notes" after their mother's death, realizing the abuse was a reflection of their mother's illness rather than their own "badness." The core message of the discussion is that it is "never too late" to heal. Whether at 62 or 68, the transition from a "shattered mirror" of distorted self-perception to a life of 100% authenticity is possible. By facing trauma head-on and releasing the "junk" of the past, individuals can transform their scars into a source of power and purpose.
Demond Martin is an investor, philanthropist, and CEO of WellWithAll, a health and wellness company committed to closing gaps in care by reinvesting profits into underserved communities. As a leader shaped by experiences ranging from the White House to Wall Street, Demond uses his platform to champion a powerful idea: that the relationships we build ultimately shape the lives we live. Today, Demond shares how a childhood marked by instability and hardship became the foundation for a life of purpose, how mentors and "second fathers" helped him see a future beyond his circumstances, and how the concept of "friends of the good" has guided his journey from surviving to serving. He reflects on the power of vulnerability, the responsibility we have to give back, and why true friendship is one of the most overlooked forces behind success. My friends, if you've ever wondered how the people in your life are shaping your future, this conversation is for you. You'll leave reminded that no one succeeds alone, that your story is still being written, and that the right relationships can lift you higher than you ever imagined.

The impulse to be creative is ingrained in the human spirit. We often turn to art not only to capture the beauty of the world, but also to manage its complexities. In an age where art is often devalued in favour of creating capital, will a new generation of artists be able to maintain their creative output? To answer this question, we will be joined by John Studzinski, philanthropist and Genesis Foundation founder, for a special conversation about his lifetime support of artists and cultural organisations and on what he has learned about the role creativity plays in mental health, recovery and collective life. The event forms part of the Genesis Foundation's Genesis Conversationsseries and also marks the 25th anniversary of the Genesis Foundation. The evening will begin with a preview screening of a new opera Angels on the Underground, composed by Will Todd, and a libretto by Sally Gardner. After the screening there will be a panel conversation and a Q&A session. Philanthropy is changing — and donors are changing with it. In this episode of What Donors Want, we speak with Isabelle Hayhoe, Senior Philanthropy Adviser at Barclays Private Bank, about new research exploring how high-net-worth individuals in the UK are approaching giving today. Drawing on insights from their report The Modern Philanthropist, the conversation reveals a clear shift: today's donors are becoming more intentional, more informed, and more engaged in the causes they support. Philanthropy is moving beyond transactions toward deeper partnerships between donors and the organisations they fund. We explore: - What today's major donors are really looking for from charities - Why strategic advice and relationships matter more than ever - How donors are contributing more than money, and what this means for fundraisers and nonprofit leaders If philanthropy used to be about writing cheques, today it's increasingly about participation, collaboration, and long-term change.

One mindset shift can turn your biggest loss into your greatest comeback. In this episode of Sharkpreneur, Seth Greene interviews Rod Khleif, Multifamily Real Estate, Expert Podcast Host, Best-Selling Author, and Philanthropist, built a real estate empire and then rebuilt it after losing $50 million in the 2008 crash. Rod breaks down why mindset drives 80–90% of success, shares lessons from owning 800 single-family homes, and explains what's happening in multifamily right now as debt comes due and opportunity rises. He also shares how his decades of work with Tony Robbins shaped his philosophy and why giving back through the Tiny Hands Foundation became a core part of his definition of fulfillment. Key Takeaways: → Mindset beats mechanics: Rod argues that psychology drives the majority of success; tactics only work when you act on them consistently. → Single-family risk is underestimated: One vacancy can mean 100% vacancy, plus turnover costs can wipe out a year of profit. → Multifamily scales faster than people think: Buying one 20-unit property can be simpler than buying 20 separate houses, with fewer moving parts. → Avoid cross-collateralization traps: Rod's crash was worsened by tying stronger assets to weaker ones, creating a domino effect. → Education first, then action: Don't “dabble.” Commit to learning the business and getting around serious operators and frameworks. Rod Khleif is a Sarasota-based multifamily investor, best-selling author, and top-ranked podcast host who rebuilt a real estate empire after losing $50M in the 2008 crash. Today, he leads one of the most successful real estate investing coaching communities with 260,000 student-owned units. He supports his mission of abundance through the Tiny Hands Foundation, which has fed more than 160,000 children. Rod combines his market knowledge with a strong personal comeback story. In the season of giving, Datshiane Navanayagam talks to philanthropists from France and Nigeria about using their wealth to help others thrive. Historically philanthropic giving has been dominated by men, but as women's global wealth grows so does their capacity for donating money to charitable causes and enterprise. The Conversation talks to a French heiress who felt compelled to give away her money following the death of her son in a helicopter crash and a former corporate banker from Nigeria who's galvanising businesswomen from the African diaspora to invest in the futures of women on the continent.Albina du Boisrouvay was born into extreme wealth as granddaughter of a Bolivian tin magnate and daughter of a French aristocrat. She went on to pursue an alternative career as a film director and when her 24 year old son François-Xavier Bagnoud died, Albina sold three-quarters of her assets and founded FXB Foundation in his name. Its mission is to fight poverty, AIDs and support orphans and vulnerable children. Since 1989, FXB Foundation has impacted the lives of 20 million people.
