John Ross chats with repeat guest Tim McGirk about Sima Qian (c. 145–86 BC), the Father of Chinese History. He earned this accolade for his monumental work, the Shiji (usually translated as Records of the Grand Historian). It covers more than two thousand years, from the legendary early emperors up to Emperor Wu, under whom Sima Qian lived and fell afoul. Sima Qian would use his history writing to criticize cruel leaders, most notably Qin Shi Huang, the despotic first emperor of China, who burned books and attacked the humanistic legacy of Confucius. The backstory of the Records is one of the great bibliographic tales of all time. And as McGirk explains, the man and his work were inspiration for his historical novel, The Wondrous Elixir of the Two Chinese Lovers. Books discussed: Records of the Grand Historian by Sima Qian (English translation by Burton Watson, Columbia University Press, 1961, 1993, 1996). The Wondrous Elixir of the Two Chinese Lovers by Tim McGirk (Plum Rain Press, 2025) Related episodes: In BOA episode 53, John chatted with Tim about his Plum Rain Press novel The Wondrous Elixir of the Two Chinese Lovers. It weaves the story of archeological discoveries in modern-day Mexico with that of Xu Fu, a Taoist alchemist/priest sent to bring back the secret of immortality. And in episode 65, John and Tim talked about Simon Winchester's biography of Sinologist Joseph Needham, The Man Who Loved China. The Books on Asia Podcast is co-produced with Plum Rain Press. Christopher Thacker is the founder and CEO of CrewVision, a map-native dispatch platform built for landscape and snow removal companies. He got his start in the industry at 12 years old, shovelling walkways and mowing lawns, and today owns and operates Mr. Mow It All, a roughly $10M property care and snow removal company in Toronto. The business serves as CrewVision's live proving ground, where every feature is tested by real crews, on real routes, under real operational pressure before it ships. CrewVision is built around a simple belief: any crew should be able to service any property, at any time, and know exactly what needs to be done. The knowledge that keeps a company running can't stay trapped in one person's head, one veteran operator's memory, or a pile of job notes. It needs to live on the map, where the people doing the work can actually see it, trust it, and use it. Christopher also serves as Vice Chair of SIMA and is an advocate for field-first software: tools designed around crews in the field, not just managers in the office.

Amanda took a risk as an Entrepreneur early in her career. Through sheer grit and determination --and a hell of a product idea-- she was successful. Nothing fails like success. That iswhy Entrepreneurs jump right back in with both feet. This time, Amanda invented a product. Applying all the knowledge from her previous entrepreneurial ventures, including strong relationships professionally, and in manufacturing, she took this invention and scaled it only to have a potential customer steal her intellectual property. Patent Protection only goes so far. The bigger company, with more resources can be unethical and just take your idea if they believe they can drown you and legal costs. It's a calculated risk. Amanda Seema wasn't willing to lay down with her trade secret. And she is fighting.

Iran and Israel exchange fire, and 'Trump is fed up': A war update from Amos Harel and Sima Shine

U.S. President Donald Trump has tired of the Israel-Iran conflict, but a solution remains elusive as missile fire renewed Sunday following an Israeli attack on Beirut that provoked the Iranian regime. “I think he's had enough of us,” said Haaretz senior defense analyst Amos Harel, speaking on the Haaretz Podcast. “He's fed up with this region. This is taking a lot longer than he thought, and it was less successful than he assumed. He’s paying a huge price at home domestically because of the economic effects, and he doesn't seem that tough anymore.” Joining Harel on the podcast is former Mossad official Sima Shine, an Iran expert at Tel Aviv’s Institute for National Security Studies, who said that Iran clearly has the advantage in negotiations with the United States towards a long-term cease-fire. While she said she doesn’t believe that Tehran wants to prolong the war, she said, they will only end the fighting “on their terms.” “They are much more determined, they are willing to pay the price and therefore, they have the upper hand in negotiations” on the key issues – their nuclear capabilities and access to the Strait of Hormuz, despite the fact that their economic situation is “very bad.” As a result, she said, she believes that ultimately “Iran will dictate the terms” of any agreement.
