Dozens of Democrats wrote a letter to Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought on Wednesday demanding information on the Department of Government Efficiency's unauthorized use of artificial intelligence systems. The letter, which was led by Reps. Don Beyer, D-Va., Mike Levin, D-Calif., and Melanie Stansbury, D-N.M. and signed by 45 other lawmakers, expressed concerns about privacy and security risks associated with the group's use of federal data in unapproved AI systems, as well as potential conflicts of interest involving Elon Musk, who leads an AI firm called xAI. Specifically, the lawmakers flagged reports of DOGE affiliates inputting data into unapproved AI systems and the risk that sensitive federal data could be used to train future commercial models. Douglas Matty assumed the role of the Pentagon's Chief Digital and AI Officer on Monday, according to an internal unclassified email viewed by DefenseScoop. The principal deputy who has been temporarily leading the AI hub ahead of the Trump administration's selection for the new chief, Margie Palmieri, sent the announcement to several senior officials Friday morning. In the email, she indicated that more communications on the team's path ahead would soon follow, once Matty takes the reins. Matty previously founded the Army AI Integration Center under Army Futures Command, which he led between 2020 and 2022. Palmieri wrote: “We are excited to get appointed leadership at the helm of CDAO so early in the administration. The prioritization on filling the top Al and data related leadership position in DoD will enable the Department to better accelerate and scale the adoption of data, analytics, and Al in line with the Secretary's priorities.” The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Denis Noble and Michael Levin - two great minds in biology come together on Live Longer World. Denis Noble is a renowned biologist and pioneer in systems biology, known for his groundbreaking work on the electrical activity of the heart and his influential contributions to the understanding of biological systems. Denis is an advocate for taking a systems integrative approach to biology, as opposed to the reductionist gene-centric view that has dominated the field due to Neo-Darwinism. The gene-centric view has failed us in advancing progress on many diseases, and we need to now take a systems based approach focused on functional networks within biological systems. Michael Levin is an American developmental and synthetic biologist at Tufts University, where he is the Vannevar Bush Distinguished Professor. His research is focused on bioelectricity and he is my co-host for this podcast. The move comes after the company repeatedly missed earnings targets, setting off unrest among shareholders that spilled into public view in recent weeks.Last month, major CVS shareholder Glenview Capital began a significant push for changes at the company, CNBC previously reported.CNBC reported last month that CVS' board had engaged strategic advisors to weigh its options, including the potential of a breakup of its insurance and retail businesses.Joyner most recently oversaw the company's pharmacy services business as president of CVS Caremark, a similar position to the one Lynch held before she assumed the top job in February 2021. He began his career at Aetna in pharmacy benefit services and previously held the role of executive vice president of sales and marketing at CVS Health.“We believe David and his deep understanding of our integrated business can help us more directly address the challenges our industry faces, more rapidly advance the operational improvements our company requires, and fully realize the value we can uniquely create,” Chairman Roger Farah said in a statement.Lynch also stepped down from the company's board of directors this week, the company said Friday. Joyner will take a seat on the board, and Farah will assume the role of executive chairman.FFA: Karen Lynch (16%) vs. Roger Farah (16%)Meta fires staff for abusing $25 meal creditsMeta recently fired some employees for misusing a Grubhub meal perk.Roughly two dozen employees were terminated for abusing the company's meal credit system. The Grubhub perk is intended to support employees who work at locations where free meals aren't provided by a cafeteria or when employees work late and need food delivered to the office.Instead of purchasing meals, some Meta employees used the $25 credit to order other items, including laundry detergent, wine glasses, and acne pads, the person familiar with the situation said. The roughly two dozen staff were fired for a repeated pattern of misuseAmazon invests in nuclear energy, hot on the heels of Google and MicrosoftBig Tech continues to go nuclear as the artificial-intelligence boom drives energy demand to new heights.Amazon announced on Wednesday that it's anchoring a $500 million investment for X-energy to develop small, advanced modular nuclear reactors, which would provide carbon-free power for some of its data centers.Microsoft last month helped advance a plan to reopen the Three Mile Island plant, the site of one of the worst nuclear disasters in US history, and Google on Monday announced a partnership in small-modular-reactor tech with Kairos Power.A Sam Altman-backed nuclear power stock soared 150% in a monthParamount Will Allow Its 3 Co-CEOs to Resign and Receive Severance If They Are DemotedWith Paramount Global poised to be taken over by Skydance Media in 2025, the three execs running Paramount as co-CEOs — George Cheeks, Chris McCarthy and Brian Robbins — now have an additional provision in their employment agreements that will let them quit and receive severance benefits if they are demoted from their co-CEO roles. In addition, Cheeks, McCarthy and Robbins were each awarded grants of $3 million worth of restricted share units Prior to securing the deal with Skydance, Paramount dismissed former CEO Bob Bakish and formed the three-member Office of the CEO effective as of May 1 comprising: George Cheeks, president and CEO of CBS; Chris McCarthy, president and CEO, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks; and Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon.guaranteed severance payments equivalent to two times their annual base salary plus twice their annual target bonus amount, among other benefitsFor Bob Bakish last year that severance would have amounted to nearly $50MThe change in compensation comes at a time when Paramount is aiming to reduce annual costs by $500 million ahead of its merger with Skydance Media. The deal would include oversight for three years by an independent monitor.Reed Charles is a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas. Control of both the Senate and the House are up for grabs this election cycle. And right now, Democrats' quickest path to victory in the House runs through two unlikely states: California and New York. California Democratic Rep. Mike Levin talks about his experience flipping a longtime Republican district. And in headlines: Former Republican Rep. Good Samaritan saves trucker from fire, Trump thanks God for sparing his life twice, Pakistani Christian mother sentenced to death

It's Friday, September 20th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Pakistani Christian mother sentenced to death On Wednesday, a Pakistani Christian mother of four children received the death sentence after a judge convicted her under Pakistan's blasphemy laws, reports Morning Star News. Shagufta Kiran, age 40, was convicted under Section 295-C of Pakistan's widely condemned blasphemy laws for insulting Muhammad, the false prophet of Islam, which carries a mandatory death sentence. She was arrested in Islamabad by the Federal Investigation Agency on July 29, 2021, for allegedly sharing blasphemous content in a WhatsApp group in September 2020. Her husband and two sons were also taken into custody during the raid but were later released. Attorney Rana Hameed said, “The complaint against Kiran was registered by a Muslim named Shiraz Farooqi, who alleged that she had shared content disrespectful of Islam's prophet. However, Kiran has maintained that she has not authored the content and had forwarded it in the WhatsApp group without reading it.” Formerly a nurse, Kiran had joined several interfaith WhatsApp groups, where she proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ and defended her Christian faith. One such group, Pure Discussions, was administered by the complainant, Shiraz Farooqi. While the mother is hopeful of a positive outcome from the superior courts, she misses her family terribly. The verdict did not come as a surprise, as 99 percent of those charged under Section 295-C are convicted by trial courts under pressure from Islamists. According to the Center for Social Justice, nearly 3,000 people have been accused of blasphemy in Pakistan since 1987. Specifically, in the Punjab Province alone, 552 Christians are currently detained in prisons. Pakistan ranks seventh on the Open Doors 2024 World Watch List of the most difficult places to be a Christian. Trump objects to Kamala's lies and thanks God for sparing his life twice On the presidential campaign trail, Donald Trump spoke on Wednesday at a rally on Long Island in Uniondale, New York. He took issue with the dishonest claims by Kamala Harris and the liberal media, reports RealClearPolitics.com. TRUMP: “It's time to stop the lies, stop the hoaxes, stop the smears, stop the lawfare of the fake lawsuits against me, and stop claiming your opponents will turn America into a dictatorship. Give me a break, because the fact is that I'm not a threat to democracy, they are. “They're doing things in politics that have never been done before in the history of our country. And worst of all, with their open borders and bad elections, they have made us into a Third World nation, something which nobody thought was even possible. Americans deserve a campaign based on the issues. We try and keep it on the issues.” And, Trump also expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life twice from recent assassination attempts. TRUMP: “God has now spared my life — It must have been. God, thank you. Not once, but twice. There are those that say He did it because Trump is going to turn this state around. He's going to turn this country around. He's going to make America great again.” Pro-abortion Republican Congressional candidate: A gutless wonder Republican Matt Gunderson is hoping to unseat incumbent Democrat Rep. Mike Levin of California's 49th congressional district. But his strategy is raising eyebrows by campaigning on a promise to keep abortion “safe, legal, and rare,” apparently hoping that his pro-abortion view will help him prevail in America's most liberal state, reports LifeSiteNews.com. Listen. GUNDERSON: “On a woman's right to choose, I'm pro-choice. I believe abortion should be safe, legal and rare. I don't want politicians dictating health care for my daughters. You might disagree, and that's okay. “But I bet there's more that unites us, like lowering housing, grocery, and gas prices, securing the border, and protecting Social Security. We can end the overheated political rhetoric and focus on fixing a broken Washington. I'm Matt Gunderson, and I approved this message.” Since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, shifting public opinion and a wave of 10 pro-abortion ballot initiatives have led some in the Republican Party to conclude they must moderate the party's longstanding pro-life stance. Pro-life activists such as Lila Rose, founder of LiveAction, have forcefully challenged that conclusion, but because Trump has vocally sided with the moderation camp throughout his current campaign, other GOP candidates have been given cover to compromise as well. Psalm 119:1-3 says, “Joyful are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the LORD. Joyful are those who obey His laws and search for Him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in His paths." Good Samaritan saves trucker from fire And finally, a Virginia man is being hailed a hero after he saw a fire blazing under a tractor-trailer — and immediately took action, reports FaithWire.com. Akeem Dixon was on his way to a job interview this week in Norfolk, Virginia, when he noticed the blaze. DIXON: “I was in a tunnel. Beside me, I see a tractor trailer. And I see under the tractor trailer, I see a fire under the truck.” Recognizing the need to move quickly, he started honking to get the driver's attention, but to no avail. That's when Dixon decided to pull his car in front of the tractor-trailer, according to WVEC-TV. DIXON: “[As] soon as we get inside the tunnel, I just drive right in front of him, put my forward flashers on, and I slowed right down to a complete stop. Then he stopped behind me. So, when I got out of my car, I rushed straight to the truck. And I was, like, ‘Yo, there's a fire underneath your truck!” The driver got out of the truck and Dixon told him to get a fire extinguisher. But it quickly became evident time was running out. Due to the flames, the engine was going to explode at any moment. DIXON: “I tell him to leave the truck, because it's going to blow any minute. Just leave it and come to my car. Let's move to my car, far away from the truck. As soon as we move from the truck and close to my car, at the same time, we hear a boom.” Thankfully, Dixon and the driver remained safe — all thanks to his selfless actions. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, to lay down his life for his friends.” Or, in the case of Akeem Dixon, for a stranger! The following is a fascinating interview with Dr. Charley Lineweaver, who worked with Paul Davies on his work on cancer which we discuss. Episode Show Notes: https://livelongerworld.com/p/clineweaver Topics include: - the evolutionary and atavistic theory of cancer - the incorrectness of the somatic mutation theory of cancer - a novel take on attacking the weakness of cancer - how embryogenesis could be viewed as cells reverting to old memory - the origins of multicellularity - “Cancer cannot do anything new” The atavistic theory of cancer states that cancer cells revert to an old memory they have from billions of years, but forget the new memory. The old memory pertains to constant cell proliferation, which happened as single-celled creatures, and in fact in embryogenesis as well. The new memory pertains to regulating cell proliferation and cells knowing when to stop cellular division. In cancer, it seems like cells forget this new memory and revert to the old memory. This theory has many interesting explanations and predictions which we dive into in the conversation. Enjoy! Why do we have two eyes? Two ears? Two arms and two legs? Why is one side of the human body – externally at least – pretty much a mirror image of the other side? CrowdScience listener Kevin from Trinidad and Tobago is intrigued. He wants to know why human beings – and indeed most animals - have a line of symmetry in their bodies. Yet, beyond their flowers and fruits, plants don't seem to have any obvious symmetry. It seems that they can branch in any direction. Anand Jagatia sets out to find out why the animal kingdom settled on bilateral symmetry as the ideal body plan. And it takes him into the deep oceans of 570 million years ago. Paleobiologist Dr. Frankie Dunn is his guide to a time when animal life was experimenting with all sorts of different body plans and symmetries.Frankie shows Anand a fossil of the animals which changed everything. When creatures with bilateral symmetry emerged they began to re-engineer their environment, outcompeting everything else and dooming them to extinction. Well... nearly everything else. One very successful group of animals which have an utterly different symmetry are the echinoderms. That includes animals with pentaradial - or five-fold - symmetry like starfish and sea urchins. And that body shape poses some intriguing questions... like “where's a starfish's head?” Dr. Imran Rahman introduces us to the extraordinary, weird world of echinoderms. To answer the second part of Kevin's question - why plants don't seem to have symmetry – Anand turns to botanist Prof. Sophie Nadot. She tells him that there is symmetry in plants... you just have to know where to look! Beyond flowers and fruits, there's also symmetry in a plants leaves and stem. The overall shape of a plant might start out symmetrical but environmental factors like wind, the direction of the sun and grazing by animals throws it off-kilter. And, while the human body may be symmetrical on the outside, when you look inside, it's a very different story. As listener Kevin says, “our internal organs are a bit all over the place!” Prof. Mike Levin studies the mechanisms which control biological asymmetry. He tells Anand why asymmetry is so important... and also why it's so difficult to achieve consistently. One of the lesser-known consequences of the horrific Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, has been the shutdown of normal life for Israelis living in northern Israel: hundreds of families who live near the border with Lebanon had to be evacuated from their homes to escape the barrage of rockets fired by Hezbollah forces, which continues to this day. And that has meant the suspension of hockey games and practise for the small coterie of Israeli players in the country's hockey program housed at the Canadian-founded arena in Metulla. But thanks to Canadian supporters of the Israeli hockey program, the Vancouver and Winnipeg Jewish communities, and Maccabi Canada, twenty hockey players between the ages of 12-18 got a break from the tension and anxiety of living through the war, with an all-expenses-paid two week trip to Canada. One group visited Vancouver, while another visited Winnipeg-where they got to practise at the Winnipeg Jets' training arena, meet with Indigenous elders and the local Jewish day school, and even throw some strikes at a local bowling alley. Last month, the teens travelled to Toronto to end their trip, with the requisite stop at the CN Tower and a visit to what some might consider the shrine to the game of hockey: The Hockey Hall of Fame. How many times have you heard this? “I know federal elections are important, but I live in California - there's nothing I can do.” Yes, California is as blue a state as they come. But the reality is pro-Trump extremists are active throughout the state and some of them are members and/or candidates for Congress. In California there are many critical Congressional races where grassroots support is urgently necessary. In other words, there is a lot you can do to ensure Trumpists do not win control of the House of Representatives. Today I talk with Bryan Blum, the political director for the California Labor Federation. Bryan shares his insight on several of the battleground races in California and how advocates on the ground can get involved by reaching out to the local Central Labor Councils. Important: Since we recorded this conversation on Thursday, June 9, we have final primary election results pointing to the newly drawn CD 13, where Democratic Assemblymember Adam Gray will face off against Republican John Duarte, as another close race come November. Not long ago a machine designed by a computer and constructed of living cells was something crazy to imagine. Not anymore. In this episode I talk with Josh Bongard and Mike Levin about how this is becoming a reality. There are lots of physical possibilities for how animals and robots can coexist but we have only explored a small part of the morphology design space. Life began on Earth at least 3.5 to 4 billion years ago, and it has been evolving ever since. The diversity of life on Earth today is the result of evolution that occurs by natural selection. But, in the next 100 plus years there won't just be plants, animals and humans from natural selection, there will also be computational designed organisms from AI. Computational designed organisms are living machines inspired by the designs and capabilities of biology and computing. These “biobots” are a new form of artificial intelligence. We also talk about The Institute for Computationally Designed Organisms doing things to create other things, all what is possible and how it can change the world. Furthermore we dive into Xenobots, the first living robots they have built which are able to reproduce. They have repurposed living cells from frog embryos and assembled them into entirely new life-forms that can move toward a target. This discovery may be meaningful for the future of medicine, the environment and even life itself. Who are Joshua Bongard & Michael Levin? Dr. Joshua Bongard is the Veinott Professor of Computer Science at the University of Vermont and the director of the Morphology, Evolution & Cognition Laboratory. His work involves computational approaches to the automated design and manufacture of soft-, evolved-, and crowdsourced robots, as well as computer-designed organisms. Dr. Michael Levin is a developmental and synthetic biologist; the Vannevar Bush Professor of Biology at Tufts University, where he directs the Allen Discovery Research Center, and associate faculty at Harvard University's Wyss Institute. Levin and his colleagues use developmental biophysics, cognitive science, and computational modeling approaches to understand tissue plasticity, especially focused on bioelectrical information processing in non-neural cell networks. It's very hard for me to sell myself. And I understand that for these people, it's hard for them to sell themselves and especially underpricing, not wanting to charge your true value. And then also being able to structure your offer or your program or whatever it is that you sell in a way that's compelling, that people will want to buy it without having to resort to like persuasive little hacks, you know. Tom Poland 02:30 Right. This is a legend hack! So, folks, just please listen up to this because this is the number one problem that I encounter with hundreds, if not thousands of clients over the last 40 something years, is how do you articulate your value proposition in such a way that's clear, that is also magnetically compelling, and that the value is obvious! Because, very often, price is an issue when value is in the street. So, listen up! This is the real oil coming from Mike here. My question number three, five and a half minutes left, what would you say would be the typical symptoms of someone who needs your services? What's going on in their life or their business right now? Mike Giannulis 03:06 I think some of the biggest symptoms for people that need what I do is they're kind of at a place where they sort of feel stuck. They've kind of done what they know how to do. And they've reached a point where they're sort of like, they're either going to decide- I break it down into three things. The three S's- you can stay where you're at, you can decide to sell, or you can decide to scale. So, which of those three is it? You know, are you going to stay and just kind of say, “Hey, this is it!”? And again, there's nothing wrong with that! If that's where you're at, well, great, you know. But if you want to sell it, that's fine, too. Or if you want to scale it. And many times, people have sort of- they're just unsure of how do they reach to either a new audience, or roll out new products, or create ads that better convert, especially on the front end, so they can afford to run more ads. That's probably the biggest thing- is like, they don't have a scalable marketing system. And that's the biggest struggle! Tom Poland 04:02 And if I can add a little PSA, folks, if you're looking to avoid stress, the other S, you can't! Like, you can manage it. And I tell you what, I prefer the stress of scaling over the stress of surviving any day. Mike Giannulis 04:14 Yeah, that's a great idea. Tom Poland 04:15 But, Mike, tell us about the common- this is question number four, we've got four minutes left, so we're right on track. What are some of the common mistakes that people make prior to finding your solution? So, what are they trying to get out of the sort of feeling of getting stuck right now that just isn't going to work? Mike Giannulis 04:29 Well going- this is going to sound kind of bad because this is part of what I do, but I do think a lot of people make the mistake of just like getting themselves in the course mindset, where they're going to buy the next course, buy the next crop, buy the next thing, trying to new hack, go to the Facebook ads event that they saw advertised. And so, they end up spreading very, very thin, trying to find whatever the next thing is, and that's truly a bigger problem of going outside of your area of expertise. I see this all the time we're I'll people and they're like a world-class, say, psychologist, right? And they're spending their nights and weekends learning Facebook ads– not worth it! Just get someone to do that, you know. And so, I find people that think they need to learn to write ads themselves and run their own Facebook ads, “Do this and do this!”. You know, it's very, very, very hard to do those things without help or experience. So, if you're already an expert, focus on that and find the help. Find the support. Don't try to do it all on your own. I get it, maybe you have to at first, but, as fast as you can, get some help! Tom Poland 05:32 One of the big secrets of success is you don't have to be that smart, you just have to be smart enough to know how dumb you are, and get help. So, folks, question number five, two and a half minutes left, Mike. What I'm after here is a top tip, a valuable free action someone could take. A step in the right direction, if you will. Not going to solve the whole problem but it might help them start moving. Mike Giannulis 05:51 I think two big things are focused, really homed in on, “What's the biggest problem that you solve?” and “What's the biggest promise that you can make?” And if you can really iron out those two things, those are the two ways you'll attract people in. Tom Poland 06:06 Yeah, I love those two questions– what's the biggest problem you solve, and the biggest promise you can make to a prospective client about solving their problem. Two minutes left, Mike. Question number six, a valuable free resource we could direct people to that's going to help them even more? Got a URL or landing page somewhere? Mike Giannulis 06:20 Yes. So, if people want some access to some like pre-written copy that I've already done for them– templates, structures with the ability of an AI to actually write those, I'm about to launch Prontowrite.com. And I'm allowing people to join it as beta testers. So, they just go to prontowrite.com. They can opt-in, and as soon as it comes live, they'll be the first to know, and they'll get early, kind of like, free tester access. Tom Poland 06:45 Folks, it's very clever. I've got it open on the screen now, the landing page. And essentially what it is, it's a template that guides us through the articulation of what it is you want to say so that it's clear and it's compelling. It's Mike-holds-your-hand-digitally through that process. So, it's Pronto, P as in very fast, P-R-O-N-T-O, write as in your scribbling something, W-R-I-T-E .com. Go get it! We've got 65 seconds left, Mike, so plenty of time for the last question. Question number seven is what's the one question I should have asked you, but didn't? Mike Giannulis 07:15 Yeah, always the toughest one! I've seen your show, so this is the one that I've been thinking about. I think probably it would be, you know, what should someone do if they're sort of feeling stuck or if they're unsure of what the next step is for them? How do they know when they're ready for that next step? And I kind of tell people when it comes to scaling things, you've got to its kind of cool, but the word “scale” itself is the answer. So, if you're going to scale- when you think about scale, you think about balancing, right? So, if you want to ramp up any particular area, you've got to make sure you're doing it at the same time. So, you can't just scale marketing if you don't have operations and fulfillment in the sales team. So, you have to look at everything across the whole spectrum and bring them up at the same time. Tom Poland 08:01 Perfect! Mike Giannulis 08:02 All right. We did it! Tom Poland 08:03 Michael, perfect timing. Thanks so much for your time and your insights. Mike Giannulis 08:07 Thank you.
