Do people drive less because they live in buildings that don't provide parking, or do they live in buildings that don't provide parking because they drive less? That question has huge implications for how we build and rebuild our cities, yet researchers have struggled for decades to answer it conclusively. UCLA professor Adam Millard-Ball joins us to discuss new research that finally — we hope — puts the question to bed. Taking advantage of San Francisco's affordable housing lottery, Millard-Ball and colleagues find that (as-good-as-)randomly assigning tenants to different buildings and neighborhoods has substantial impacts on their transportation choices, with lower parking ratios resulting in less driving and more transit use. We talk about what this means for housing and parking policy, and what it says about the behavioral shifts needed to make cities more affordable, accessible, and sustainable.Show notes:Millard-Ball, A., West, J., Rezaei, N., & Desai, G. Radhika Desai returns to PTO to talk about the latest round of violence between India and Pakistan, following the terrorist attack that killed 26 tourists in Indian administered Kashmir on April 22nd. We discussed the situation in Jammu and Kashmir since 2019, when the Hindu nationalist government of Narendra Modi revoked the territory's special status under the Indian constitution and brought it under direct rule amid a wave of violent repression. We also talked about fears in Kashmir about the Indian government seeking to change the demographic balance in the territory, and about the scale of the fighting Pakistan and India - which far exceeded the previous round of the conflict in 2019. If you think that your only hope for treating overactive bladder is to focus on your pelvic floor muscles, you may be overlooking a different type of approach that's been proven successful for hundreds of thousands of patients: Nerve stimulation. It turns out that certain nerves play a critical role in bladder function, and there are devices that can stimulate those nerves to substantially reduce leaks. Many patients find that their symptoms improve by 50% or more with a simple, in-office procedure called sacral neuromodulation. Today's guest is Dr. Vikas Desai, a urologist, a board-certified member of the American Urologic Association and a member of the Society of Prosthetic Urologic Surgeons, to tell us more about it. To learn more from Dr. Desai about bladder health, visit his YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@DesaiUro.For more information about the National Association for Continence, click here, and be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest.Music:Rainbows Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/For over 35 years, Tranquility Products has provided real-life protection for people with incontinence. Fungi are ubiquitous in nature—in fact, you're likely breathing in fungal spores as you read this. Most fungi are harmless to healthy people. But changes in the global climate, in human settlement patterns, and even in our own body temperatures have made fungal pathogens an increasing health threat. On this episode, host Jason Lloyd interviews Angel Desai, an infectious disease specialist and associate professor at the University of California Davis Medical Center. Desai and George R. Thompson III cowrote “Foiling the Growing Threat of Fungal Pathogens” in the Winter 2025 Issues. Desai discusses what fungal pathogens are, why they are becoming more dangerous, and how the public health community can respond. Fusion energy, potentially a fuel source that could last a thousand years, is transitioning from science fiction to business reality. Helion Energy recently signed the first fusion power purchase agreement with Microsoft, promising 50 megawatts by 2028. But the story isn't just about the physics breakthroughs that make fusion possible. The U.S. and China are tussling for global leadership in fusion, as is the case in so many fields. And as China is outspending the US on fusion research by about $1.5 billion annually, concerns mount that they could make a serious challenge to America's lead in fusion. After all, while the US pioneered advances in clean energy technologies like solar panels and EVs, America ultimately lost manufacturing leadership to China. With fusion, the stakes could be much higher, given that fusion has the potential to be the world's "last energy source," with significant economic and national security implications. Evan is joined by Sachin Desai, General Counsel at Helion Energy and former Nuclear Regulatory Commission official, and Thomas Hochman, Director of Infrastructure Policy at FAI. They discuss the technical, regulatory, and geopolitical dimensions of what could be this decade's most consequential technology race.

This quarter of the Future of Agriculture podcast is made possible by Case IH: https://www.caseih.com/en-us/unitedstatesDownload the Agtech Alchemy Quarterly: https://agtechalchemy.substack.com/p/agtech-alchemy-quarterly-winter2025GenAI Whitepaper: https://www.rhishipethe.com/genai-in-agToday's episode features the founding members of Agtech Alchemy. This format is a little different from our normal show. It's a lot less formal, you'll hear some jokes and laughter, but really it's just four guys who all really care about agtech and its ability to improve agriculture in the future. If you've been around agtech circles for very long, especially if you're on LinkedIn, you know all three of our guests today: Walt Duflock is the vice president of Innovation at Western Growers, which represents family farmers growing fresh produce in Arizona, California, Colorado and New Mexico. Sachi Desai is with Bayer Crop Science. He has over 20 years of experience in AI and machine learning research, development and application across multiple industries including agriculture. Rishi Pethe has guest hosted this show a number of times. He is the author and publisher of the twice weekly newsletter, Software is Feeding the World. He also just released a whitepaper today which is a practical guide to generative AI and explains how organizations can go past proof of concept phase of these new capabilities. Make sure you go download that. I'll leave a link for that in the show notes. I will also leave a link in the show notes where you can read the Agtech Alchemy Quarterly, which is what we're going to talk about in today's episode. I knew it would be filled with insights, but it surpassed my expectations, and it's 116 pages long, so obviously we will just barely scratch the surface in today's episode. Make sure you go read the full digest to understand what's happening today in agtech. It was really cool to read thought pieces from creators back-to-back in the same document. I started making connections that I don't think I would have made if I read them independently. If I had to summarize an overall theme for this one, it would be an exploration of if and when technology can be a true competitive advantage. There is a lot of talk of AI, especially generative AI, but the pieces run the gamut. Some of the authors you've heard from on this show in the past, like Janette Barnard, Matthew Pryor, Rishi Pethe, and Dan Schultz. Others are household names in agtech thought leadership like Shane Thomas and Walt Duflock. It's a great mix and I think you're going to enjoy today's conversation which serves as a bit of an overview. A quick disclaimer: I will admit that this episode does get a little bit wonky because all four of us like to nerd out about agtech, but but it's also a lot of fun, so stick with it. I think there are some really important concepts discussed. Then after you listen go read the full digest.
