Never miss a Sunday show! Especially on Friday the 13th :) This week I'm stepping a bit out of my comfort zone to bring you a pretty wonderful show from September 26th, 1993 at the old Boston Garden in Boston MA. This show starts with a fine 'Jack Straw' then Jerry goes right into an excellent version of 'Althea'. In fact I even find the 'Walkin' Blues' here to be above average.. 'High Time' is quite well done, with some nice contributions from Vince and Phil. 'Maggie's Farm' is quite fun with each member taking their turn with the verses. 'Lazy River Road' is one of those latter day anthems that kind of mark where Garcia was at the time. This week the Deadpod will take you back to December 4th 1990 at the Oakland County Coliseum for a fine show that showcased the energy that Bruce Hornsby brought to the band when he joined them after the death of Brent Mydland. Highlights here for me include the Mississippi Half-Step and a wonderful Bird Song. While 'Walkin' Blues' is on no ones list of favorites, it is balanced out by a great set closing 'Valley Road'. Here we are in the beautiful month of May - Kentucky Derby weekend no less - so I wanted to bring you a set that of course included the band's wonderful rendition of George Jones'  'The Race Is On'.. In addition, this pick comes from the fabulous Frost Amphitheater back in the fine year of 1989..  This week's show from May 6th, 1989, happened to be a Rex benefit as well, and I think it is a fine example of the band's work during this period which was always easy to listen to and enjoy. While the setlist is perhaps not extraordinary, aside from the Race Is On's inclusion, the songs are all quite up tempo (with the exception of Walkin' Blues and a perhaps not the best-played version of West LA.. ) and I'm sure the crowd was enjoying itself in the California sunshine. Summer keeps rollin' by... and I thought it just wouldn't be right if I didn't find a proper Shakedown Street to mark the season.. I think this one should fit the bill. Here is a high-energy show from 1988, originally a Rex Benefit show, that gives us plenty to like during these long days of Summer. This one comes from the Greek in Berkeley, where the boys always enjoyed playing. After the strong Shakedown opener, they move into a pretty good Walkin' Blues and a decent Friend of the Devil. The Queen Jane that follows however may have you scratching your head at the start - it doesn't sound like that itself at first :) . The Dire Wolf makes an appearance afterwards, a song I always enjoyed and never heard live often enough. Cassidy may provide the strongest jam of the 2nd part of the first set, as the song serves as the spot for some excellent interplay. A rare set-closing Bertha leaves everyone on their feet as the first set closes... This week's Deadpod has been a often requested show for some time.. I think I hesitated in putting it on the Deadpod because it was such a well-known show, and it had been broadcast back in the day on TV. Still its probably one of the finest shows of 1991, and since its anniversary was coming up, I decided it would be a great time to break it out here on the Deadpod.  This show occurred back on June 17th, 1991 at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford NJ. They blow out of the gate with a spot on Eyes of the World.. I really loved seeing this on TV as you could tell how much Jerry and Bruce were enjoying the interplay on this song, and you can clearly hear it in their playing. This is only the first first-set Eyes of the World since 1975... they follow with a very good Walkin' Blues, then a very good Brown-Eyed Women, with a fine Hornsby lead in it.. what follows is quite unusual, as Jerry breaks out the Dark Star motif, which the band picks up on, and while they don't actually play Dark Star (until set 2) the thematic is present throughout the night, and adds another element of excitement to the already interesting playing.. Weir follows with a Masterpiece, then we get a fun Loose Lucy.. Cassidy and a rockin' Might As Well close out set 1.. Of course I don't know how it has been where you are... but the winter up here in Michigan has been pretty mild so far (now I've jinked myself :) Still.. I didn't think a little pick-me-up would be a bad idea.. this show is a request from one of my listeners and I thought a little Springtime Dead would be just the thing for the after-holidays blues.. This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. I've included the magnificent Scarlet->Fire that opens the 2nd set..
