It's Halloween time again! Put on your sexy Star Trek costume and make sure you're fully in control of your faculties because you might not be entirely you in there! This time, our Casual Explorers decided to explore some of the many psychic and or energy beings who can just pop inside your flesh and blood as easy as a pair of boots. In Enterprise's ‘Observer Effect,' Trip and Hoshi get sick off Klingon rubbish while Travis and Reed get possessed by one very eager energy being and one who is basically #quietquitting, in Deep Space Nine's ‘The Assignment,' O'Brien's life is once more a living hell when his wife gets taken over by the Pah'Wraiths and Rom struggles to make friends at work and finally, we round it off with our main event, Dr. Beverly Crusher's adventures with sex-ghosts who live in candles ‘Sub Rosa' and Charlie and Miles find themselves watching one of Star Trek's worst-ranked episodes and ask the most important question, 'Do the Scottish know there's a Scotland in Space?' Honestly, it's much more fun to watch Troi get heavily involved in talking about Crusher's sex dreams than it ever is to have to engage in discussions on the ethics of terrorism as we did last episode. If you or anyone else is showing signs of possession, please don't come to us for help, Google it. Or ask us on Ko-Fi.Episodes Discussed: Observer Effect (12:25), The Assignment (42:12) and Sub Rosa (01:13:40)SHOW NOTES: The FULL English Breakfast, Miles forgot to do his Crypt-Keeper Schtick this Halloween, he also has opinions on the Halloween series of films, the Leprechaun films, Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom, Jailhouse Rock's surprising appearance on the charts and a quick diversion into British music magazine the NME, Let Me Love You is possibly the WORST song we've had to listen to for the show (you win this round, Sheeran!) Miles admits to his dark past as a ‘Nice Guy' The Andromeda Strain, You gotta feel sorry for Klingon Plumbers, quiet-quitting Energy Beings, the Organians have gone all The Good Place with their criteria for success, how this would have ended if this were either an episode of The Twilight Zone or The Outer Limits, the Spice Girls, Charlie DOES know songs that weren't featured on Rock Band thank you very much, Miles takes a break from bitching about Starbucks to bitch about the Hilton, Deep Space Nine and Babylon 5 are ripping each-other, Bashir and O'Brien being sitcom scamps, Rom trying to make friends, ‘Things can Only Get Better' is a song that'll forever be thought as an anthem for Neo-Liberal malaise, Sunshine, Charlie recommends a horror film,Scream, Bryan Adams, Sting & Rod Stewart as alternate Three Musketeers, Have YOU ever told a boss about a sexual fantasy? Marina Sirtis' accent slips a lot, ‘The Innocents', Charlie's RPG of the week ‘The Between,' would Ronin have had to seduce Wesley Crusher? Despite it's female audience Star Trek always has a Male Gaze on the Cosmos, SF complaining about romance and sexuality, the SCOTTISH PLANET, the fact there's a church leads us to wonder if the Abrahamic Religions are still practised and worshipped in the often-secular Star Trek, consent in ‘Sub Rosa' comparing to consent in ‘Plato's Stepchildren,'PEDANTS CORNER: It's Busta Rhymes who kung-fu'd Michael Myers in Halloween Resurrection, The Defiant actually came first with Deep Space Nine's Season 3 in 1994 Babylon 5 introduced the White Star in Season 3 in 1995. Although, when talking about Doctor Who, I didn't think to consider that some of the more legitimate arguments against the Doctor being more sexual as a being has felt like the show's Ace-Erasure to fans who see the Doctor as an all-too-rare example of positive Asexual Representation)Casual Trek is by Charlie Etheridge-Nunn and Miles Reid-LobattoMusic by Alfred Etheridge-NunnCasual Trek is a part of the Nerd & Tie Networkhttps://ko-fi.com/casualtrekMiles' blog: http://www.mareidlobatto.wordpress.com Charlie's blog: http://www.fakedtales.com

Welcome back Katrina Kemp! Katrina is an actor, producer, activist, DJ, and intuitive from LA. Katrina not only shares her own coming-of-age story as a person with pseudoachondroplasia but also speaks to the relatively new project of people with Dwarfism collecting their own history, free from the gaze of average-height people. She explains how people with dwarfism were enslaved for centuries and how being forced to labor as circus performers still inform how they're treated in the modern movie industry (and the world at large) today. Katrina traces the relationship between erasure and exploitation in media and reflects on how vital it was for her to find representation and community online growing up. “We find each other deep, deep in the internet. But other people are finding us too,” Katrina says. This sets the stage for our discussion of “Dear Average Height People,” a film Katrina is producing by director Aubrey Smalls. As far as Aubrey and Katrina know, this is the very first documentary comedy special to be directed and produced by people with Dwarfism. In fact, they haven't been able to find ANY films, shows, or specials created by people with Dwarfism and urgently want that to change. The film is about dwarfism, disability hate groups, agency, and freedom. It portrays a global network of people with dwarfism who may live far away from each other, but who live in deep solidarity. It illustrates the way obsessive hate groups target and harass people with Dwarfism online, as well as how platforms like Youtube encourage violence and monetize torment. It also depicts how talented, beautiful, funny, and diverse the Dwarfism community is around the world. Listen to hear Katrina's many insights about beauty, bodies, surveillance, her bone to pick with Stephen Spielberg, Britney Spears, L'Express, Diane Arbus, inhalants, and more… “People experience epiphanies with me every day… every hour if I allowed it,” Katrina says. Follow Katrina on IG, Twitter, Twitch, and Youtube. Please consider contributing what you can to “Dear Average Height People.” Pledge your support on Indiegogo here. Production crew volunteers, exhibition and performance spaces, and community partners are also welcome to donate resources. + For more Katrina on the pod, listen to our Britney Spears episode from 2021. Haewon Asfaw and Ale Lemus are friends, abolitionists, and pop culture enthusiasts. In this episode, they explain how practicing abolition together informs the way they watch their favorite Bravo shows together, especially The Real Housewives. Whether you've watched every episode of every franchise or have never seen the show, our conversation is for you. Listen to hear Haewon and Ale use real relationships from The Real Housewives to articulate ideas about conflict, punishment, and revenge. Using memorable moments from the Bravo canon, they also dissect capitalism, individualism and white dominant culture. Ale discusses intergenerational healing in the Bravoverse and makes me cackle with comments like, “Big Kathy is a figure that looms large in Beverly Hills.”Plus, they tell me about valuing your relationships as your currency and finding your resources within them. Rachael Finley is the author of the new book “Nobody Ever Told Me Anything,” a memoir and survival guide detailing her highly isolated childhood in South Florida and unique coming-of-age experience online. She tells me about exploring the duality of women through writing about her mother, surviving her 11-year-old year squatting alone in a vacation rental while her mom sought out mental health treatment, and broadening her horizons by hanging out at the mall. At the mall, she met strangers for the first time and began experimenting with the parts of herself she thought the world should know and the parts they shouldn't… tailor-fitting parts of herself for an audience… a lifelong experiment that led her to write this unfiltered book.Follow Rachael on IG @instasteak and buy her book on Shop Hot Lava here. Castella hit the music scene in April 2020 with the release of her original tune No Ordinary Love. Hailing from Long Beach, California, Castella has sang her entire life. Castella's family and friends know her as Cathy Rebecca Crowell-Thompson - wife, mother of 3 and Human Resources (HR) Executive. In the latter part of her career in HR, she was inspired to tap into the creative side of her brain by mentor and writing partner, Darryl Swann. Castella released her first EP -Thinking About You, produced by Corey Stampley, in late 2019. She released her first single from that EP "No Ordinary Love"in April 2020. This tune reached #24 on the Smooth Jazz Charts and garnered her a"Breakout Artist of 2020"Nomination by Smooth Jazz Network, an original iHeartRadio station. She then decided to make another record and release it on her birthday as a gift to herself. During the pandemic, she met producer Jeff Canady. Along with Jeff, they pushed out two amazing records,"Let Me Love You" and "Sleigh Ride"! "Let Me Love You" reached #33 on the smooth jazz charts and rose to #5 on the Urban charts and rose to #1 on the Black Planet Radio chart in Italy. Sleigh Riderose to #6 on the smooth jazz Holiday Chart. Ever true to her work and trusting her heart, Castella decided to reach back into her pocket and release her tune Mojito from her debut EP. A very special record to Castella and her team where her mentor, multi-platinum, Grammy Award winning producer Darryl Swann contributed with writing on the tune as well as mixing and mastering the tune, in fact all of her tunes. Mojito did well on the charts, rising to #2 on the Urban Influencer R&B/Soul Chart and #49 on the Smooth Jazz Network Top 100 Chart!! Castella continues to work on more music to share with her fans. Castella released her chart topping tune “So Glad I Met You” featuring trumpeter and friend, Willie Bradley. This song did well on both Smooth Jazz Charts as well as hitting #2 on the UK Soul Charts and #1 in Canada with TeeRex Radio! Castella had the wonderful opportunity to work with French producer Tom Glide to produce a remix of “So Glad I Met You” which topped the UK Soul Breakers Chart at #1 as well as making several charts in the UK and Canada Top 10!Castella Released her second EP "Let Me Love You" the EP on January 7, 2022. On the same day she released her single “So Into You” a remake of the 70's classic by the Atlanta Rhythm Section with an exciting radio campaign spear headed by Gorov Music Marketing in the US and Gary Van den Bussche in the UK. “So Into You” has already made a big splash by hitting #1 on the UK Soul Breakers Chart on January 3, 2022. Welcome back Beth Pickens! My favorite art consultant, art counselor & lesbian-feminist money coach (she's a Capricorn too!) We celebrate her new book “Make Your Art No Matter What: Moving Beyond Creative Hurdles” and discuss some of its core topics — money, time, fear, grief, isolation, education, and asking for what you want. Listen for a chance to win your own copy! Beth shares tons of tips to enhance your experience of both your art and your life. Investing time and money into yourself, distinguishing isolation from solitude, and warming up for your own creative practice are all talked about. We also explore staying connected to stillness while an abundance of ways to spend time become available to us. Beth gives advice to artists with common fears like experiencing disappointment while pitching and avoiding promoting your completed projects. Beth says, “For artists, the hard thing is not attaining goals, getting the grant or getting the opportunity or the show or whatever, the hard thing is being present for it and actually enjoying it.”She reminds us all, "We can't solve interior situations with exterior things!" Follow Beth, buy her book & listen to her podcast. (Some LA libraries also have the book!) Tierney Talks is engineered & edited by Margot Padilla + hosted & produced by Tierney Finster. Dena welcomes back David Parsons III to chat about his NEWEST song, No Regrets. David is a singer-songwriter, author, and motivational speaker who left the world of celebrity advertising (Los Angeles, CA) with a one-way ticket to Kaua'i, Hawai'i in 2013. After rediscovering life lived "island-style" David learned he had a gift for singing and began writing music. Heavily influenced by the music/lyrics of Van Morrison, Jack Johnson, and John Mayer, David found his unique voice and began performing at restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions across the Hawaiian Islands - playing original music alongside popular cover songs. In 2014 his original song, “Let Me Love You (feat. Bronte Stiles)” became the montage/theme song for Major League Baseball’s TV show, "Legends: the San Francisco Giants - World Series Champions” on MSNBC Universal - still airing on Comcast SportsNET. Shortly following, the Commanding Officer of the US Navy Base - PMRF Barking Sands - invited David to perform at the West Most Freedom Fest's 4th of July Fireworks Concert attended by 8k+. One opportunity led to the next and now David's music is featured on radio across the US with songs streaming/sold in over 30 countries. For info on appearances, tours, festivals, corporate shows, and concerts visit www.DavidParsonsIII.com or connect with him on social media @davidparsonsiii.
