Activist and organizer Roan Boucher details the unprecedented surge in anti-trans legislation across America and its connection to Christian Nationalism. Despite addressing these troubling developments, Boucher discusses sources of hope and resilience, pointing to mutual aid networks and Jewish spiritual practices. This compelling dialogue weaves personal experience with sharp political analysis. It's essential listening experience for anyone trying to understand our current moment. Boucher also addresses deep divisions within Jewish communities and stresses Jews need to work across divides to oppose antisemitism and assaults on human rights. Jewish tradition emphasizes welcoming the stranger. Many organizations like Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts live that value by helping to resettle refugees. But what happens when government policies make that nearly impossible? Rabbi James Greene, CEO of Jewish Family Service of Western Massachusetts, shares how his organization supports refugees —despite legal and financial obstacles. Greene discusses the impact of recent policy shifts, the power of community-driven advocacy and why helping newcomers to the country is central to Jewish tradition. Tune in for a powerful conversation on justice, resilience and the fight for a more welcoming world. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. In this interview, I'm joined by Derek Sivers. Derek is the Founder of CD Baby — a company he sold for $22 million, and then gave pretty much everything to charity. He has written multiple bestselling books, given TED talks which have reached millions, and been a circus performer for 10 years. There have been few people who have had a bigger positive impact on my thinking than Derek, so it was a real treat to sit down with him for an hour and have this conversation. Expect to learn: — The connection between your beliefs, your emotions, and your actions — How Derek sold his company for $22 million and then instantly gave it all away to charity — His unconventional approach to getting advice from mentors — Why Derek has journalled every day for the past 13 years and why this is the “single most useful thing” he does. And more. You can learn more about Derek's work, books, and philosophy at https://sive.rs. --- Derek Sivers graduated in 1990 from Berklee, where he majored in professional music. He entered as a guitarist and came out a self-proclaimed “everything guy” after studying voice, composition, piano, songwriting, music synthesis, and production. Sivers is best known as the founder of CD Baby(Opens in a new window), the largest online distribution company for independent music. After years of touring, recording, and writing for TV projects, he started CD Baby from his bedroom—almost by accident. When he obtained a merchant account to sell his CDs online (not an easy task in the '90s), musician friends began asking if he could sell their CDs. Soon he was getting calls from strangers, and the foundation for a business was laid. Sivers launched CD Baby in 1998 with a musician-centric ideology that sought to maximize musicians' profits rather than minimize them for company gain. In 2003, Sivers won the World Technology Award and was described by Esquire Magazine as “one of the last music-business folk heroes.” In keeping with his philanthropic ethos, Sivers sold CD Baby in 2008 and gave the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. In 2011, Sivers published Anything You Want(Opens in a new window), a book chronicling his challenges and triumphs founding, building, and selling CD Baby. In 2013, Sivers launched Wood Egg(Opens in a new window), which publishes guides about how to build companies in Asia. He is a frequent speaker at the TED Conference, with over 5 million views of his talks. --- Interview Links: — Derek's website - https://sive.rs Interview Links: — Derek's website - https://sive.rs — Derek's new book - https://sive.rs/u — Derek's new book (Amazon Link) - https://amzn.to/41HkBPz
What does it mean to apply the concepts of Mussar (Jewish ethical teachings) to everyday life? What about to confronting racism in the world, at a particular institution or even in oneself? Rabbi David Jaffe, author of Changing the World From the Inside Out and Yehuda Webster, a noted activist and teacher, point to examples of how this can work. Each shares how Mussar taught them how they could have behaved differently in certain situations and where drawing on its lessons led to more positive outcomes. They also discuss anti-racism work in the broader Jewish community, addressing the post Oct 7 pushback while making the case for a renewed focus. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. Send us a textIn today's episode, I'm thrilled to welcome Derek Sivers, a remarkable individual whose openness to new experiences has profoundly shaped both his personal and professional journey. What I appreciate the most about Derek is how he's taken important life's lessons and transformed them into wisdom about the things that truly matter.Derek's passion for learning is infectious, but what's truly fascinating is his refusal to be boxed into any single worldview. This philosophy has served him well throughout his diverse career as an entrepreneur, writer, and musician. Many know him as the founder of CD Baby, which he started in 1998. The company grew to become the largest seller of independent music online, generating over $100 million in sales before Derek sold it in 2008 for $22 million. In a remarkable act of generosity, he donated the entire proceeds to a charitable trust for music education. But Derek's impact extends far beyond CD Baby. Through his blog and five books, he's become known for his concise, thought-provoking writing on business, life, and decision-making. In our conversation, we dive deep into his two latest works. The first, "HOW TO LIVE," presents 27 conflicting approaches to life, each making a compelling case for a different way of living. Rather than providing easy answers, Derek challenges readers to find their own path based on their unique circumstances and perspectives. We also explore his newest book, "Useful NOT True," which examines the powerful concept of reframing. Derek makes a fascinating case that success begins with perspective, which then shapes our strategy and actions. He argues that while our initial thoughts might feel true, they're often obstacles we need to overcome. By recognizing that no single perspective holds absolute truth, we can make more informed choices in our lives. Many of you might know Derek from his three compelling TED Talks, including my personal favorite about the dancing guy on a hill – a brilliant metaphor for how movements begin. Our conversation weaves through various aspects of his life, from his early days to his writing, but what really resonated with me was our discussion about the importance of changing our minds. Derek believes that what we consider absolute truths can actually restrict our growth and shut us off from new learning experiences. His insights about the power of changing one's mind have particularly influenced my own thinking about life and work, making it one of the highlights of our conversation. I genuinely enjoyed my time with Derek, and I believe this discussion will offer you fresh perspectives on your own life, work, and what matters most to you.Connect with Derek:WebsiteHis books can be found below:Useful Not True How to LiveHell Yeah or NoYour Music and PeopleAnything You WantAs well you can see any of Derek's Ted Talks below: Derek's Ted Talks
In a conversation both deeply personal and grounded in history and sociology, Ilana Kaufman, CEO of the Jews of Color Initiative, shares her mission and why the work has been so challenging in a post-October 7 world. Kaufman explains why it's been so counterproductive to consider Blacks and Jews as separate groups — erasing a sizable population identifying as both. She talks about why statistics and demographic matter for Jews of Color and the entire Jewish community. She shares how she came to write the afterward to Marc Dollinger's book, “Black Power, Jewish Politics.” The conversation also touches on the Civil Rights and Soviet Jewry movements and why educators should draw more explicit connections between the two. “Dismantling Racism from the Inside Out.” The idea is deceptively simple and strongly rooted in Jewish tradition. To change society, individuals must first address their own attitudes, biases and inner lives. Easy to say, much harder to carry out. With funding from the Wabash Center, Rabbi Sandra Lawson and Rabbi Alex Weissman decided to try this approach at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, which is committed to anti-racism. Working with faculty, Lawson and Weissman led a year-long process grounded in mussar (Jewish ethical practice.) The work was set to begin in earnest on Oct. 17, 2023. In this episode, Weissman and Lawson talk about how the attacks of Oct. 7 and subsequent war cast a shadow over the project but ultimately led to some important insights about how racism has impact Jewish institutions. They also address why, in an age of skyrocketing antisemitism, it's as important as ever for Jewish communities to address racism. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. It's not easy to talk about and process the first anniversary of Oct. 7, 2023, when war continues to widen, hostages remain in Gaza and a ceasefire seems less and likely. This episode aims to model such a conversation. In a wide-ranging interview featuring Rabbi Mira Wasserman, Ph.D., interim vice president of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College and Elliott Glassenberg, senior educator at BINA: the Jewish Movement for Social Change, they and Bryan discuss Oct. 7 and how Israeli and American Jews have been impacted. They also explain the relationship between RRC and BINA and how it may be more important than ever for rabbis serving in the Diaspora to devote time to better understanding the dynamics of Israeli society. When asked who the most interesting man alive is, I'd say Derek Sivers. He's an entrepreneur, writer, and former musician who founded CD Baby, sold it for $22 million, and donated the proceeds to musician education. He has authored five impactful books, given several TED Talks, and lived in various countries, embracing diverse cultures. In this wide-ranging interview, we'll discuss embracing your weirdness, challenging beliefs, confronting death, and more. Plus, there's a fun bonus at the end—Derek even asked me to take my shirt off. Sad week week as it was announced that Héctor Marin Rios of Nordika passed away. Its especially sad as he'll never get to see how well the Lost Generation single is doing. My condolences to his friends and family. With that said, we've got a great show this week featuring a few discs we're going to put to bed and naturally the brand new stuff I've gotten my hands on over the past week. Plus no CD Baby interference, so the show will actually turn up on YouTube tomorrow. Its the labour day weekend here, so I'm going to end my labour for the weekend and get RSA posted for you! If we embrace Judaism, what do we do with passages from Torah and elsewhere that seem to directly undermine our worldviews and values? Human rights attorney turned rabbinical student Maria Pulzetti makes a compelling case that we should deal with these problematic biblical passages head-on. Maria and Bryan also examine reproductive justice, as well as the legacy of slavery and systemic racism, through a Jewish lens. Later, they discuss what motivated Maria to become a rabbi, her opposition to the death penalty and her time, in the early 2000s, as a human rights worker in Russia. Your personal brand doesn't stop at what you post on Spotify, TikTok, and Instagram. It's also expressed in the way you interact with other artists in your community, how you pitch your music to tastemakers, and how you present yourself in interviews. These forms of outreach expose you to new audiences who could make a genuine connection with you and get invested in your music — and it all starts with a great first impression. What will you do to stand out in a way that's authentic to you and your music? In this episode of the DIY Musician Podcast, Via Perkins, Senior Communications & Content Manager at CD Baby, takes a deep dive with Annabelle Kline-Zilles, founder and host of That Good Sh*t, Daylon Hicks, founder of arabbitshole, and Meleah Hartnett, host of The Luna Collective podcast, to answer this question, including a Q&A featuring questions from CD Baby, That Good Sh*t, The Luna Collective, and arabbitshole audience members.
Marc Dollinger has seen a thing or two. In his academic career, the historian of American Jewry has been labeled a “self-hated leftist Jew” and “right-wing Zionist colonialist.” He's been criticized for failing to capture the full nuance of black-Jewish relations and been abandoned by his publisher for suggesting that Jews bear some responsibility for the continuance of American racism. And, while he studied leftist anti-Israel sentiments for decades — focusing on its origins after the Six Day War — he's been utterly shocked by the virulence of anti-Israel sentiment on campuses since Oct. 7, 2023. In this packed interview, Dollinger addresses the nature of academic freedom, the importance of DEI work in Jewish communities and what the lines between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. He also talks about his previous book Black Power, Jewish Politics and his forthcoming memoir of his campus intellectual battles. Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles. For a certain generation of Jewish Americans, Israel and the memory of the Holocaust represented twin pillars of civil religion, argues Louis Newman, a scholar of Jewish ethics and religion. While these pillars may have shown cracks for decades, Newman says they came crashing down on Oct. 7,2023. Israel had failed its most basic function: keeping Jews and all its inhabitants safe. What does a people do when its faith is shattered? What can we learn from our history? Where do we go from here? Newman discusses all this and more in a thought-provoking interview. The author of a new book on how to succeed in college also gives his take on campus antisemitism, anti-Israel protests and what colleges might do to restore both safety and the free exchange of ideas and expression. In 1997, Derek Sivers (accidentally) started CD Baby, the largest distributor of independent music in the world. Ten years later, he sold the company for $22 million. What did he do with the money? Did he buy a Ferrari? A mansion? A private jet? He gave it all to charity. He then became a TED speaker and a writer. He's published 5 books: - Anything You Want (2011) -- Best business book I've ever read. - Your Music and People (2020) -- Best marketing book I've ever read. - Hell Yeah or No (2020) -- Best book on productivity and decision-making I've ever read. - How to Live (2021) -- Best book on life philosophies I've ever read. - Useful Not True (2024) -- Best book on beliefs I've ever read. Derek Sivers is the person I've watched, read, and listened to the most since I got an internet connection in 2000. No joke! I could've asked him questions about music, business, productivity, marketing, or public speaking, but many YouTubers and podcasters have done that before. For 1.5 hours, we talked about one thing only: WRITING. - What brought him into writing? - Which writers inspire him? - How did he write his books? - Why succinct writing?- Why does he not use semicolons? - What does he do to actively improve his writing? - Does he have a sentence he's particularly attached to? We discussed this and other nerdy stuff about writing. Enjoy! Rabbi Haviva Ner-David, an activist and author, shares what it is like to live in Israel – and be a parent - right now, with all the heartbreak, confusion and glimmers of hope. In this conversation, the author and spiritual director discusses the personal losses she suffered on October 7 and after (9:18) She also shares anxiety about living in Israel's north and how and why she's recommitted herself to interfaith peace activism (22:10) and her work with the Standing Together, the grassroots movement mobilizing Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel in pursuit of peace . With views on the conflict becoming ever more entrenched, Ner-David's perspective is refreshingly iconoclastic. Whatever your perspective, left, right or center, she says something to challenge you. The Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association was founded in 1974 to serve as the professional association of the small but growing number of rabbis affiliated with the Reconstructionist movements. These rabbis were trained with a very different approach than their peers in other movements. Rabbi Elyse Wechterman, the RRA's CEO for roughly the past decade, discusses the transformation of the rabbinate and why it matters to everyone who cares about Jews and Judaism (5:00). She shares how disparate factors ranging from COVID to the emergence of the gig economy have shaped the rabbinate in unexpected ways (31:50). The discussion turns to how the events of October 7 and subsequent Israel-Hamas War have placed unprecedented strain on rabbis (44:45). There are some lighter moments as well. Wechterman quotes Billy Joel: “The good old days weren't always good. Tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems.” Theme song, “Ilu Finu” by Rabbi Miriam Margles.
