Some producers make beats. Pete Rock built a blueprint. On this episode of Unglossy, Bun B, Jeffrey Sledge, and Tom Frank sit down with the legendary producer, DJ, and MC for a wide-ranging conversation that runs from his Mount Vernon roots all the way to the present moment. Pete takes us back to coming up under Heavy D, spinning on WBLS next to Marley Marl at 13 years old, and the basement studio where Biggie, Run DMC, Nas, and half of hip hop passed through. He breaks down the stories behind the classics: how "T.R.O.Y." came out of real grief and taught him to treat music like medicine, how Jam Master Jay tapped out the drums on "Down with the King," and how he ended up singing the hook on "The World Is Yours." Plus the new De La Soul album, his love of comics, and why, after 53 years without a chip, these Knicks have him out of his head in the best way. It is a masterclass, a memory lap, and a love letter to New York, all in one. Follow us on Instagram @UnglossyPod to join the conversation, and get early access plus live recordings and more at Merrick Studios+. Unglossy is produced and distributed by Merrick Studios, where culture takes the mic.

In this special live episode — the first Once A DJ has taken out of the studio and in front of an audience — recorded earlier this year at Canopy Menswear in Derby, he tells the story of how B-boying and hip hop found him at exactly the right moment — and never really let go.He opens up about a difficult childhood, moving between families and a stint in boarding school, and how the battle culture of B-boying gave him a platform to express things he couldn't yet put into words. From erecting coat hangers around his bedroom window to pull in the Capital Rap Show on pirate radio, to catching second-hand American records in tiny Suffolk shops thanks to nearby US Air Force bases — Dan's path into the culture was shaped by scarcity, which made it all the more precious. He eventually made it to New York, where he spent around seven years immersed in the grassroots scene: practicing in the Bronx, attending block parties in Queens, linking with Spike from Zulu Nation, hanging with original writers like Stay High 149, and entering battles despite — by his own admission — being stiff as a plank when the nerves hit.Back in England, his illustration career took off through a series of portraits of hip hop icons drawn during his train commute — work that went around the world, got bootlegged onto mixtapes, and caught the attention of Rakim, Pete Rock, Paradise Gray from X Clan, the RZA and De La Soul among others. He rounds out the episode talking about his upcoming illustrated book Wonder Love, a love letter to Stevie Wonder's classic 70s albums, published by W.W. Norton.Show notes:Dan Lish's work: danlish.com (verify current link)Velocity Press: velocitypress.ukCanopy Menswear Derby: canopyonline.co.ukBook mentioned: Brakesploitation seriesUpcoming: Wonder Love — illustrated Stevie Wonder book, W.W. Episode 374: BUCKWILD "On Producing for Biggie, D.I.T.C., and Shaping the NY Sound" This week on @RoadPodcast, we sit down with legendary producer @buckwild_ditc as he traces his full arc as a producer, starting with how he met Goldfinger at (01:14) and how tracks like Rakim's “You Got Soul” at (05:10) pushed him toward beat making. The crew dives into the Roosevelt Room record convention at (13:10), where Pete Rock, Large Pro, Q Tip, Capri and others found the records that shaped classic hip hop, with Goldfinger adding his perspective at (23:45). They break down the core of the New York sound at (15:10), covering O.C.'s “Times Up” and the four to eight bar sample loop that defined 1994 and NYC. Buckwild speaks on digging for fresh textures at (25:01), the origins of Digging In The Crates, and how he used the “Seed of Love” sample before Just Blaze flipped it for Jay Z on “Public Service Announcement,” then explains how he met O.C. at (19:50). He runs through his top five productions at (39:00), breaks down why he insists on being in the studio during recording sessions at (22:01), and gets into the realities of clearing samples. The Biggie stories land at the center of the episode at (26:14). The conversation shifts into whether 2025 is a strong year for hip hop but a tough one for clubs at (32:51), why one-liners and real bars feel missing, and when the culture changed at (41:11) as labels downsized and the SoundCloud era took over. Buckwild reflects on chasing hits at (57:10), the story behind “Whoa!,” the beats Jay Z passed on, and what it meant to miss those records erupting in the club. The episode closes with thoughts on Saigon's album at (1:00:51) and why a DITC compilation would be difficult to assemble at (1:11:01). Tell Us How You Really FeelThe needle drops and the room changes—horns breathe, drums loosen, and a sampler starts talking back. We dive into the living thread between jazz and beat culture, from Congo Square and brass bands to dusty chops, off-grid drums, and the global scenes building tomorrow's standards today. The journey moves through the roots—rebellion, soul, spiritual release—into the eras of big band glory, commercial decline, and the underground that kept the flame alive until hip-hop cracked open the vault and let the swing back out.We explore how producers like DJ Premier, Pete Rock, J Dilla, Madlib, and Nujabes reintroduced jazz aesthetics to a new generation, turning horn riffs, Rhodes chords, and brushed cymbals into modern language. Along the way, we spotlight the cities and crews shaping the current wave: London's Yussef Dayes, Kamaal Williams, and Shabaka Hutchings; LA's Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin; global innovators from Italy, Austria, Japan, and beyond. Labels and collectives like Jazz Is Dead bridge elders and explorers, proving the tradition evolves best when it's shared.Between records, we trade stories and facts that link technique to technology—Miles facing the band for deeper communication, Coltrane's relentless practice, Raymond Scott's early electronic machines, and how big band sessions birthed mic placement and room capture approaches that shaped modern studios and DAWs. Herbie Hancock reminds us that jazz is conversation: musicians, audience, and energy in constant exchange. Beat culture carries that forward—looping, bending, and improvising with machines as instruments. Ride with us, discover new artists and essential beat tapes, and feel the continuity: jazz never died; it reincarnated in the pads.If you felt the groove, subscribe, rate, and share with a friend. Having spent his early years in London, Mark Ronson grew up in Manhattan, began working as a DJ as a teenager and quickly made a name for himself on the New York club scene of the 1990s. He moved into music production and, in 2006, co-wrote and co-produced the Amy Winehouse album Back To Black. The record won five Grammys and Mark Ronson himself scooped the Producer of the Year Award.  Since then, he has released five solo albums and worked with some of the most successful names in pop including Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa, Queens Of The Stone Age and Paul McCartney. The winner of ten Grammys and two Brits, he added an Academy Award to his list of accolades in 2018 as co-writer of the song Shallow from the film A Star Is Born. He was also Oscar nominated for his work as executive producer, composer and songwriter for the soundtrack to the Barbie movie. More recently he has written a book called Night People, a memoir about his time as a DJ in 90s New York.  Mark Ronson tells John Wilson about the influence of his music-loving parents, who often threw parties at their north London home when he was a child. He talks about the influence of his stepfather Mick Jones, songwriter, guitarist and producer of the 80s rock band Foreigner, who allowed Mark to experiment with equipment in his home studio in New York and encouraged his early interest in production. He remembers how hearing the 1992 track They Reminisce Over You by Pete Rock and CL Smooth led him to pursue a career as a club DJ and become renowned for the diverse range of music he played in clubs - from soul and hip-hop to classic rock - an eclectic approach which later informed his work as a producer. Mark Ronson also recalls first meeting Amy Winehouse and how they wrote and recorded the songs for her Back To Black album.  Producer: Edwina Pitman

During his visit to the KEXP studios in Seattle to record his Live on KEXP session, the Mexican-American musician, composer, and producer—born in the border city of Laredo, Texas—sat down with Albina Cabrera to share the songs that shaped his life. From the vinyl records he discovered during his college years in Austin, to his deep passion for hip hop, and the golden era of salsa and cumbia that inspired him to co-found Grupo Fantasma. Sampling isn't a new concept—it's been around for decades. But its roots in hip-hop and R&B can be traced back to the 1970s and 1980s, when DJs and producers in New York City began experimenting with turntables and drum machines. One of the earliest examples of sampling comes from the legendary DJ Kool Herc, who's often credited as one of the founding fathers of hip-hop. Herc would isolate the *breakbeat*—the part of a song where the drums take center stage—and loop it to keep the party going. This technique laid the groundwork for what we now know as sampling. But it wasn't just about looping beats. Producers like Marley Marl, J Dilla, and later, Pete Rock and Dr. Dre, began taking snippets of vocals, horns, and basslines from soul, funk, and R&B records, and weaving them into entirely new compositions. Sampling became a way to pay homage to the past while creating something fresh and innovative. Of course, with innovation came controversy. As sampling grew in popularity, so did legal battles over copyright and ownership. Artists and record labels began suing producers for using their music without permission, leading to stricter laws and higher costs for clearing samples. But despite these challenges, sampling has remained a vital part of music production. Join me for this episode where we will explore the impact of DJ Kool Herc and some popular samples.

Hosts Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot have talked about Lou Reed many times before on Sound Opinions, but often the discussion gets focused on the man's life instead of his music. This week they talk with author Jim Higgins about his new book that reviews every album Reed released in his lifetime.
